Effective data screening technique for crowdsourced speech intelligibility experiments: Evaluation with IRM-based speech enhancement

It is essential to perform speech intelligibility (SI) experiments with human listeners in order to evaluate objective intelligibility measures for developing effective speech enhancement and noise reduction algorithms. Recently, crowdsourced remote testing has become a popular means for collecting a massive amount and variety of data at a relatively small cost and in a short time. However, careful data screening is essential for attaining reliable SI data. We performed SI experiments on speech enhanced by an "oracle" ideal ratio mask (IRM) in a well-controlled laboratory and in crowdsourced remote environments that could not be controlled directly. We introduced simple tone pip tests, in which participants were asked to report the number of audible tone pips, to estimate their listening levels above audible thresholds. The tone pip tests were very effective for data screening to reduce the variability of crowdsourced remote results so that the laboratory results would become similar. The results also demonstrated the SI of an oracle IRM, giving us the upper limit of the mask-based single-channel speech enhancement.

Comparison of remote experiments using crowdsourcing and laboratory experiments on speech intelligibility

Many subjective experiments have been performed to develop objective speech intelligibility measures, but the novel coronavirus outbreak has made it very difficult to conduct experiments in a laboratory. One solution is to perform remote testing using crowdsourcing; however, because we cannot control the listening conditions, it is unclear whether the results are entirely reliable. In this study, we compared speech intelligibility scores obtained in remote and laboratory experiments. The results showed that the mean and standard deviation (SD) of the remote experiments' speech reception threshold (SRT) were higher than those of the laboratory experiments. However, the variance in the SRTs across the speech-enhancement conditions revealed similarities, implying that remote testing results may be as useful as laboratory experiments to develop an objective measure. We also show that the practice session scores correlate with the SRT values. This is a priori information before performing the main tests and would be useful for data screening to reduce the variability of the SRT distribution.

Long-path formation in a deformed microdisk laser

An asymmetric resonant cavity can be used to form a path that is much longer than the cavity size. We demonstrate this capability for a deformed microdisk equipped with two linear waveguides, by constructing a multiply reflected periodic orbit that is confined by total internal reflection within the deformed microdisk and outcoupled by the two linear waveguides. Resonant mode analysis reveals that the modes corresponding to the periodic orbit are characterized by high quality factors. From measured spectral and far-field data, we confirm that the fabricated devices can form a path about 9.3 times longer than the average diameter of the deformed microdisk.

Chaotic laser based physical random bit streaming system with a computer application interface

We demonstrate a random bit streaming system that uses a chaotic laser as its physical entropy source. By performing real-time bit manipulation for bias reduction, we were able to provide the memory of a personal computer with a constant supply of ready-to-use physical random bits at a throughput of up to 4 Gbps. We pay special attention to the end-to-end entropy source model describing how the entropy from physical sources is converted into bit entropy. We confirmed the statistical quality of the generated random bits by revealing the pass rate of the NIST SP800-22 test suite to be 65 % to 75 %, which is commonly considered acceptable for a reliable random bit generator. We also confirmed the stable operation of our random bit steaming system with long-term bias monitoring.

Efficient optical path folding by using multiple total internal reflections in a microcavity

We propose using an asymmetric resonant microcavity for the efficient generation of an optical path that is much longer than the diameter of the cavity. The path is formed along a star polygonal periodic orbit within the cavity, which is stable and confined by total internal reflection. We fabricated a semiconductor device based on this idea with an average diameter of 0.3 mm, and achieved a path length of 2.79 mm experimentally.

Phase reduction of stochastic limit cycle oscillators

We point out that the phase reduction of stochastic limit cycle oscillators has been done incorrectly in the literature. We present a correct phase reduction method for oscillators driven by weak external white Gaussian noises. Numerical evidence demonstrates that the present phase equation properly approximates the dynamics of the original full oscillator system.
