Observation of Acoustically Induced Dressed States of Rare-Earth Ions

Acoustically induced dressed states of long-lived erbium ions in a crystal are demonstrated. These states are formed by rapid modulation of two-level systems via strain induced by surface acoustic waves whose frequencies exceed the optical linewidth of the ion ensemble. Multiple sidebands and the reduction of their intensities appearing near the surface are evidence of a strong interaction between the acoustic waves and the ions. This development allows for on-chip control of long-lived ions and paves the way to highly coherent hybrid quantum systems with telecom photons, acoustic phonons, and electrons.

Introducing Corrections to the Reflectance of Graphene by Light Emission

Monolayer graphene absorbs 2.3 percent of the incident visible light. This 'small' absorption has been used to emphasize the visual transparency of graphene, but it in fact means that multilayer graphene absorbs a sizable fraction of incident light, which causes non-negligible fluorescence. In this paper, we formulate the light emission properties of multilayer graphene composed of tens to hundreds of layers using a transfer matrix method and confirm the method's validity experimentally. We could quantitatively explain the measured contrasts of multilayer graphene on SiO$_2$/Si substrates and found sizable corrections, which cannot be classified as incoherent light emissions, to the reflectance of visible light. The new component originates from coherent emission caused by absorption at each graphene layer. Multilayer graphene thus functions as a partial coherent light source of various wavelengths, and it may have surface-emitting laser applications.

Intrinsic and extrinsic origins of low-frequency noise in GaAs/AlGaAs Schottky-gated nanostructures

We study low-frequency noise in current passing through quantum point contacts fabricated from several GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures with different layer structures and fabrication processes. In contrast to previous reports, there is no gate-dependent random telegraph noise (RTN) originating from tunneling through a Schottky barrier in devices fabricated using the standard low-damage process. Gate-dependent RTN appears only in devices fabricated with a high-damage process that induces charge trap sites. We show that the insertion of AlAs/GaAs superlattices in the AlGaAs barrier helps to suppress trap formation. Our results enable the fabrication of damage-resistant and thus low-noise devices.

Observation of Hysteretic Transport Due to Dynamic Nuclear Spin Polarization in a GaAs Lateral Double Quantum Dot

We report a new transport feature in a GaAs lateral double quantum dot that emerges only for magnetic field sweeps and shows hysteresis due to dynamic nuclear spin polarization (DNP). This DNP signal appears in the Coulomb blockade regime by virtue of the finite inter-dot tunnel coupling and originates from the crossing between ground levels of the spin triplet and singlet extensively used for nuclear spin manipulations in pulsed gate experiments. The unexpectedly large signal intensity is suggestive of unbalanced DNP between the two dots, which opens up the possibility of controlling electron and nuclear spin states via DC transport.
