Gauging 1-form center symmetries in simple $SU(N)$ gauge theories

Consequences of gauging exact $Z_k^C$ center symmetries in several simple $SU(N)$ gauge theories, where $k$ is a divisor of $N$, are investigated. Models discussed include: the $SU(N)$ gauge theory with $N_f$ copies of Weyl fermions in self-adjoint single-column antisymmetric representation, the well-discussed adjoint QCD, QCD-like theories in which the quarks are in a two-index representation of $SU(N)$, and a chiral $SU(N)$ theory with fermions in the symmetric as well as in anti-antisymmetric representations but without fundamentals. Mixed 't Hooft anomalies between the 1-form $Z_k^C$ symmetry and some 0-form (standard) discrete symmetry provide us with useful information about the infrared dynamics of the system. In some cases they give decisive indication to select only few possiblities for the infrared phase of the theory.

Large-$N$ $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model on a Euclidean torus: uniqueness and stability of the vacuum

In this paper we examine analytically the large-$N$ gap equation and its solution for the $2D$ $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model defined on a Euclidean spacetime torus of arbitrary shape and size ($L, β)$, $β$ being the inverse temperature. We find that the system has a unique homogeneous phase, with the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ fields $n_i$ acquiring a dynamically generated mass $\langleλ\rangle\geΛ^2$ (analogous to the mass gap of $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in $4D$), for any $β$ and $L$. Several related topics in the recent literature are discussed. One concerns the possibility, which turns out to be excluded according to our analysis, of a "Higgs-like" - or deconfinement - phase at small $L$ and at zero temperature. Another topics involves "soliton-like (inhomogeneous) solutions of the generalized gap equation, which we do not find. A related question concerns a possible instability of the standard $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ vacuum on ${\mathbb{R}}^{2}$, which is shown not to occur. In all cases, the difference in the conclusions can be traced to the existence of certain zeromodes and their proper treatment. The $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ model with twisted boundary conditions is also analyzed. The $θ$ dependence and different limits involving $N$, $β$ and $L$ are briefly discussed.

Dynamics and symmetries in chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories

Dynamics and symmetry realization in various chiral gauge theories in four dimensions are investigated, generalizing a recent work by M. Shifman and the present authors, by relying on the standard 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions and on some other general ideas. These requirements are so strong that the dynamics of the systems are severely constrained. Color-flavor or color-flavor-flavor locking, dynamical Abelianization, and combinations of these, are powerful ideas which often leads to solutions of the anomaly matching conditions. Moreover, a conjecture is made on generation of a mass hierarchy associated with symmetry breaking in chiral gauge theories, which has no analogues in vector-like gauge theories such as QCD.

Confinement and XSB in QCD: Mysteries and beauty of soliton dynamics in nonAbelian gauge theories

Deep insights into the possible infrared dynamics of strongly-coupled nonAbelian gauge theories such as QCD come from the analyses of ${\cal N}=1$ or ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. Central in the whole discussion will be the topological soliton monopoles and vortices and their quantum dynamics. We review the arguments that nonAbelian monopoles, free from the classic "difficulties", can be defined semi-classically via the topology and stability connection to the better understood nonAbelian vortices. Recent results on $CP^{N-1}$ models on $2D$ worldsheet of finite width, establish the quantum mechanical nature of such nonAbelian monopoles. An interesting class of RG flows and emergence of confining vacua "nearby" strongly-coupled infrared-fixed point (IRFP) conformal theories are discussed in the context of most singular vacua in ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD. Certain analogy with the real-world QCD is drawn. In many systems, color-flavor locking emerges as a crucial mechanism for the gauge system to avoid dynamical Abelianization.

Patterns of Symmetry Breaking in Chiral "QCD"

We consider $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory with massless chiral fermions in a complex representation of the gauge group. The main emphasis is on the so-called hybrid psi-chi-eta model. The possible patterns of realization of the continuous chiral flavor symmetry are discussed. We argue that the chiral symmetry is broken in conjunction with a dynamical Higgsing of the gauge group (complete or partial) by bi-fermion condensates. As a result a color-flavor locked symmetry is preserved. The 't Hooft anomaly matching proceeds via saturation of triangles by massless composite fermions or, in a mixed mode, i.e., also by the "weakly" coupled fermions associated with dynamical Abelianization, supplemented by a number of Nambu-Goldstone mesons. Gauge-singlet condensates are of the multifermion type and, though it cannot be excluded, the chiral symmetry realization via such gauge invariant condensates is more contrived (requires a number of four-fermion condensates simultaneously and, even so, problems remain), and less plausible. We conclude that in the model at hand, chiral flavor symmetry implies dynamical Higgsing by bifermion condensates.

Large-$N$ $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model on a finite interval: general Dirichlet boundary conditions

This is the third of the series of articles on the large-$N$ two-dimensional $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model, defined on a finite space interval $L$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here the cases of the general Dirichlet boundary conditions are studied, where the relative $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ orientations at the two boundaries are generic, and numerical solutions are presented. Distinctive features of the $\mathbb{CP}^{N-1}$ sigma model, as compared e.g., to an $O(N)$ model, which were not entirely evident in the basic properties studied in the first two articles in the large $N$ limit, manifest themselves here. It is found that the total energy is minimized when the fields are aligned in the same direction at the two boundaries.

Large-N CP(N-1) sigma model on a finite interval and the renormalized string energy

We continue the analysis started in a recent paper of the large-N two-dimensional CP(N-1) sigma model, defined on a finite space interval L with Dirichlet (or Neumann) boundary conditions. Here we focus our attention on the problem of the renormalized energy density $\mathcal{E}(x,Λ,L)$ which is found to be a sum of two terms, a constant term coming from the sum over modes, and a term proportional to the mass gap. The approach to $\mathcal{E}(x,Λ,L)\to\tfrac{N}{4π}Λ^2$ at large $LΛ$ is shown, both analytically and numerically, to be exponential: no power corrections are present and in particular no Lüscher term appears. This is consistent with the earlier result which states that the system has a unique massive phase, which interpolates smoothly between the classical weakly-coupled limit for $LΛ\to 0$ and the "confined" phase of the standard CP(N-1) model in two dimensions for $LΛ\to\infty$.

Confinement, NonAbelian monopoles, and 2D CP(N-1) model on the worldsheet of finite-length strings

Quark confinement is proposed to be a dual Meissner effect of nonAbelian kind. Important hints come from physics of strongly-coupled infrared-fixed-point theories in N=2 supersymmetric QCD, which turn into confining vacua under a small relevant perturbation. The quest for the semiclassical origin of the nonAbelian monopoles, ubiquitous as the infrared degrees of freedom in supersymmetric gauge theories, motivates us to study the quantum dynamics of 2D CP(N-1)model defined on a finite-width worldstrip, with various boundary conditions. The model is found to possess a unique phase ("confinement phase"), independent of the length of the string, showing the quantum persistence of the nonAbelian monopole.

Large-N CP(N-1) sigma model on a finite interval: physical boundary effects

We analyze the two-dimensional CP(N-1) sigma model defined on a finite space interval L, with various boundary conditions, in the large N limit. With the Dirichlet boundary condition at the both ends, we show that the system has a unique phase, which smoothly approaches in the large L limit the standard 2D CP(N-1) sigma model in confinement phase, with a constant mass generated for the n(i) fields. We study the full functional saddle-point equations for finite L, and solve them numerically. The latter reduces to the well-known gap equation in the large L limit. It is found that the solution satisfies actually both the Dirichlet and Neumann conditions.

$\mathcal{N}=2$ Argyres-Douglas theories, $\mathcal{N}=1$ SQCD and Seiberg duality

We revisit the study of singular points in the Coulomb branch of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD in four dimensions with gauge group $SU(N)$ and odd number of flavors. For certain choices of the mass parameters these vacua are not lifted by a mass term for the chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation. By using recent results about the M5 brane description of $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories we study the resulting vacua and argue that the low-energy effective theory has a simple Lagrangian description involving a free chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation of the flavor symmetry group, a system somewhat reminiscent of the standard low-energy pion description of the real-world QCD. This fact is quite remarkable in view of the fact that the underlying $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT (the Argyres-Douglas systems) are strongly-coupled non-local theories of quarks and monopoles.

Geometry and Dynamics of a Coupled 4D-2D Quantum Field Theory

Geometric and dynamical aspects of a coupled 4D-2D interacting quantum field theory - the gauged nonAbelian vortex - are investigated. The fluctuations of the internal 2D nonAbelian vortex zeromodes excite the massless 4D Yang-Mills modes and in general give rise to divergent energies. This means that the well-known 2D CP(N-1) zeromodes associated with a nonAbelian vortex become nonnormalizable. Moreover, all sorts of global, topological 4D effects such as the nonAbelian Aharonov-Bohm effect come into play. These topological global features and the dynamical properties associated with the fluctuation of the 2D vortex moduli modes are intimately correlated, as shown concretely here in a U(1) x SU(N) x SU(N) model with scalar fields in a bifundamental representation of the two SU(N) factor gauge groups.

NonAbelian Vortices, Large Winding Limits and Aharonov-Bohm Effects

Remarkable simplification arises from considering vortex equations in the large winding limit. This was recently used in [1] to display all sorts of vortex zeromodes, the orientational, translational, fermionic as well as semi-local, and to relate them to the apparently distinct phenomena of the Nielsen-Olesen-Ambjorn magnetic instabilities. Here we extend these analyses to more general types of BPS nonAbelian vortices, taking as a prototype a system with gauged U(1) x SU(N) x SU(N) symmetry where the VEV of charged scalar fields in the bifundamental representation breaks the symmetry to SU(N)_{l+r} . The presence of the massless SU(N)_{l+r} gauge fields in 4D bulk introduces all sorts of non-local, topological phenomena such as the nonAbelian Aharonov-Bohm effects, which in the theory with global SU(N)_r group (g_r=0) are washed away by the strongly fluctuating orientational zeromodes in the worldsheet. Physics changes qualitatively at the moment the right gauge coupling constant g_r is turned on.

Vortex Zero Modes, Large Flux Limit and Ambjørn-Nielsen-Olesen Magnetic Instabilities

In the large flux limit vortices become flux tubes with almost constant magnetic field in the interior region. This occurs in the case of non-Abelian vortices as well, and the study of such configurations allows us to reveal a close relationship between vortex zero modes and the gyromagnetic instabilities of vector bosons in a strong background magnetic field discovered by Nielsen, Olesen and Ambjørn. The BPS vortices are exactly at the onset of this instability, and the dimension of their moduli space is precisely reproduced in this way. We present a unifying picture in which, through the study of the linear spectrum of scalars, fermions and W bosons in the magnetic field background, the expected number of translational, orientational, fermionic as well as semilocal zero modes is correctly reproduced in all cases.

Monopole-vortex complex at large distances and nonAbelian duality

We discuss the large-distance approximation of the monopole-vortex complex soliton in a hierarchically broken gauge system, SU(N+1) - > SU(N) x U(1) - > 1, in a color-flavor locked SU(N) symmetric vacuum. The ('t Hooft-Polyakov) monopole of the higher-mass-scale breaking appears as a point and acts as a source of the thin vortex generated by the lower-energy gauge symmetry breaking. The exact color-flavor diagonal symmetry of the bulk system is broken by each individual soliton, leading to nonAbelian orientational CP^{N-1} zeromodes propagating in the vortex worldsheet, well studied in the literature. But since the vortex ends at the monopoles these fluctuating modes endow the monopoles with a local SU(N) charge. This phenomenon is studied by performing the duality transformation in the presence of the CP^{N-1} moduli space. The effective action is a CP^{N-1} model defined on a finite-width worldstrip.

Non-Abelian Vortices with an Aharonov-Bohm Effect

The interplay of gauge dynamics and flavor symmetries often leads to remarkably subtle phenomena in the presence of soliton configurations. Non-Abelian vortices -- vortex solutions with continuous internal orientational moduli -- provide an example. Here we study the effect of weakly gauging a U(1)_R subgroup of the flavor symmetry on such BPS vortex solutions. Our prototypical setting consists of an SU(2) x U(1) gauge theory with N_f=2 sets of fundamental scalars that break the gauge symmetry to an "electromagnetic" U(1). The weak U(1)_R gauging converts the well-known CP1 orientation modulus |B| of the non-Abelian vortex into a parameter characterizing the strength of the magnetic field that is responsible for the Aharonov-Bohm effect. As the phase of B remains a genuine zero mode while the electromagnetic gauge symmetry is Higgsed in the interior of the vortex, these solutions are superconducting strings.

Confinement via strongly-coupled non-Abelian monopoles

New types of confinement phase emerge as singular SCFT's appearing as infrared-fixed-points of N=2 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) are perturbed by an N=1 adjoint mass term. Based on a recent remarkable work on infrared-fixed-point SCFT of highest criticalities by Gaiotto, Seiberg and Tachikawa, we discuss physics of certain confining systems in SU(N), USp(2N) or SO(N) gauge theories. These show features different from a straightforward dual superconductivity picture of confinement a' la 't Hooft and Mandelstam, which might suggest a new venue in exploring the quark confinement mechanism in the real-world QCD.

Brane Realization of Nambu Monopoles and Electroweak Strings

In the standard model, the electroweak Z-string can end on a Nambu monopole, whose mass is calculated to be 689 GeV from the current precise experimental data assuming the new particle with mass 125 GeV to be the Higgs boson. We study an extension of the standard model with additional singlet and triplet Higgs fields in the framework of N=1 supersymmetric field theory by using a D-brane configuration in type IIA string theory. We construct a D-brane configuration describing the electroweak symmetry breaking, and find a single D2-brane configuration describing a Z-string and a Nambu monopole attached by a Z-string in the standard model without an adjoint Higgs field. We further find a single D2-brane configuration describing a composite of a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole and a Nambu monopole attached by a Z-string in an extended standard model with an adjoint Higgs field. We compute the binding energy of the 't Hooft-Polyakov and Nambu monopoles by solving a minimal surface area of a D2-brane.

New Confinement Phases from Singular SCFT

New types of confining phase emerge when some singular SCFT's appearing as infrared fixed points of N=2 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) are deformed by an N=1 adjoint mass term. We make further checks on the Gaiotto-Seiberg-Tachikawa (GST) description of these vacua against the symmetry and vacuum counting argument, and show that the GST variables correctly describe these systems, brought into confinement phase by the N=1 perturbation. Several examples of such vacua, USp(2N) and SU(N) theories with four flavors and SO(N) theories with one or two flavors, are discussed.
