A Galois connection between subalgebras and tensor subcategories

Let $\mathcal{B}$ be a braided finite tensor category and let $A$ be a simple commutative algebra in $\mathcal{B}$. We construct an order-reversing Galois connection between subalgebras of $A$ and tensor subcategories of $\mathcal{B}_A$. Let $\mathcal{B}'$ denote the Müger center and set $A':=A\cap\mathcal{B}'$. The closure operators are $B\mapsto\langle B,A'\rangle_{\mathrm{alg}}$ and $\mathcal{E}\mapsto\langle\mathcal{E},\mathcal{B}_A^{\mathrm{loc}}\rangle_{\otimes}$. Thus the closed subalgebras are those containing $A'$, while the closed tensor subcategories are those containing $\mathcal{B}_A^{\mathrm{loc}}$; equivalently, the fixed-point intervals $[A',A]_{\mathrm{alg}}$ and $[\mathcal{B}_A^{\mathrm{loc}},\mathcal{B}_A]_{\otimes}$ are anti-isomorphic as lattices. For a finite tensor category $\mathcal{C}$, the canonical algebra in $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$ yields an anti-isomorphism between its subalgebras and tensor subcategories of $\mathcal{C}$. When $\mathcal{B}$ is nondegenerate, Frobenius extensions correspond to unimodular tensor subcategories. For a Hopf algebra in $\mathcal{B}$, the correspondence specializes to an order-preserving bijection between Hopf ideals and normal left coideal subalgebras.

Transparent Subalgebras and Local Module Categories

Let $A$ be a commutative simple algebra in a braided finite tensor category $\mathcal{B}$. We identify the largest transparent subalgebra of $A$ as the algebra induced by a central lift of the free-module functor. This identification gives formulas for the Frobenius-Perron dimension and the Müger center of the category of local $A$-modules. These formulas give criteria for nondegeneracy, symmetry, and modularity, together with sharp bounds on $\mathrm{FPdim}_{\mathcal{B}}(A)$. We also realize the Müger center of $\mathcal{B}$ as a category of local modules over an adjoint algebra. Finally, we prove a relative-center factorization and deduce that taking the category of local modules preserves the relative Witt class.

Commutative exact algebras and modular tensor categories

Inspired by the study of vertex operator algebra extensions, we answer the question of when the category of local modules over a commutative exact algebra in a braided finite tensor category is a (non-semisimple) modular tensor category. Along the way we provide sufficient conditions for the category of local modules to be rigid, pivotal and ribbon. We also discuss two ways to construct such commutative exact algebras. The first is the class of simple current algebras and the second is using right adjoints of central tensor functors. Furthermore, we discuss Witt equivalence and its relation with extensions of VOAs.

Estimating Discrete Choice Demand Models with Sparse Market-Product Shocks

When credible instruments are scarce or estimates hinge on instrument choice, an alternative to the leading Berry--Levinsohn--Pakes (BLP) approach to demand estimation with aggregate data can be useful. We propose a Bayesian random-coefficients discrete-choice demand estimator that jointly recovers preference parameters and market--product demand shocks under a sparsity restriction, without requiring instrumental variables. Shrinkage priors select a sparse set of active shocks, and the posterior supports inference on elasticities, forecasts, and other counterfactuals. Applications to supermarket scanner and automobile data find substantial sparsity and interpretable latent demand variation. We establish identification under sparsity and corroborate the approach with Monte Carlo experiments.

Bayesian Estimation of Cohort-Time-Stratum Specific Effects in Staggered Difference-in-Differences

Difference-in-Differences designs with staggered treatment adoption are widely used to study heterogeneous treatment effects across cohorts and time periods. We develop a probabilistic framework for estimating potentially high-dimensional ATT arrays that vary across cohorts, periods, and strata defined by baseline covariates. The framework jointly estimates subgroup-specific treatment effects through a unified likelihood-based model, stabilizing inference in sparse cohort-by-time-by-stratum settings. We establish a Bernstein-von Mises theorem for the ATT array, implying asymptotically valid frequentist coverage of posterior credible intervals. Simulations and an application to minimum wage increases and teen employment demonstrate meaningful finite-sample improvements and important subgroup heterogeneity.

Ribbon categories from ind-exact algebras: simple current case

We give criteria for when finitely generated local modules over a commutative algebra $A$ in the ind-completion $\widehat{\mathcal{C}}$ of a braided tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ inherit the structure of a (rigid, braided, ribbon) tensor category. We then apply this to simple current algebras $A = \bigoplus_{g \in Γ} E_g$, where $Γ$ is a subgroup of invertible objects in $\mathcal{C}$. Using a description of simple $A$-modules, we verify the required hypotheses for this class of algebras and deduce rigidity, braided, ribbon, and non-degeneracy properties for their finitely generated local modules. As applications, we construct examples of ribbon tensor categories from quantum supergroup categories for unrolled $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$.

Commutative algebras in Grothendieck-Verdier categories, rigidity, and vertex operator algebras

Let $A$ be a commutative algebra in a braided monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$; e.g., $A$ could be an extension of a vertex operator algebra (VOA) $V$ in a category $\mathcal{C}$ of $V$-modules. We study when the category $\mathcal{C}_A$ of $A$-modules in $\mathcal{C}$ and its subcategory $\mathcal{C}_A^{\text{loc}}$ of local modules inherit rigidity from $\mathcal{C}$, and then we find conditions for $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{C}_A$ to inherit rigidity from $\mathcal{C}_A^{\text{loc}}$. First, we assume $\mathcal{C}$ is a braided finite tensor category and prove rigidity of $\mathcal{C}_A$ and $\mathcal{C}_A^{\text{loc}}$ under conditions based on criteria of Etingof-Ostrik for $A$ to be an exact algebra in $\mathcal{C}$. As a corollary, we show that if $A$ is a simple $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$-graded VOA with a strongly rational vertex operator subalgebra $V$, then $A$ is strongly rational, without requiring the categorical dimension of $A$ as a $V$-module to be non-zero. Next, we assume $\mathcal{C}$ is a Grothendieck-Verdier category, i.e., $\mathcal{C}$ admits a weaker duality structure than rigidity. We first prove $\mathcal{C}_A$ is also a Grothendieck-Verdier category. Using this, we prove that if $\mathcal{C}_A^{\text{loc}}$ is rigid, then so is $\mathcal{C}$ under conditions such as a mild non-degeneracy assumption on $\mathcal{C}$, an assumption that every simple object of $\mathcal{C}_A$ is local, and that induction from $\mathcal{C}$ to $\mathcal{C}_A$ commutes with duality. These conditions are motivated by free field-like VOA extensions $V\subseteq A$ where $A$ is often an indecomposable $V$-module, so our result will make it more feasible to prove rigidity for many vertex algebraic monoidal categories. In a follow-up work, our result will be used to prove rigidity of the category of weight modules for the simple affine VOA of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at any admissible level.

Equivariant Eilenberg-Watts theorem for module coalgebras

For coalgebras $C$ and $D$, Takeuchi proved that the category of linear functors from $\mathfrak{M}^C$ to $\mathfrak{M}^D$ preserving small coproducts is equivalent to the category of $C$-$D$-bicomodules, where $\mathfrak{M}^C$ for a coalgebra $C$ means the category of right $C$-comodules. We formulate and prove an equivariant version of this result for module coalgebras over a bialgebra. As an application, for a bialgebra $H$, we establish an equivalence of the 2-category of a particular class of module categories over the monoidal category $\mathfrak{M}^H$ and the 2-category of a particular class of module categories over the monoidal category ${}_H\mathfrak{M}$ of left $H$-modules.

Scalable Estimation of Multinomial Response Models with Random Consideration Sets

A common assumption in the fitting of unordered multinomial response models for $J$ mutually exclusive categories is that the responses arise from the same set of $J$ categories across subjects. However, when responses measure a choice made by the subject, it is more appropriate to condition the distribution of multinomial responses on a subject-specific consideration set, drawn from the power set of $\{1,2,\ldots,J\}$. This leads to a mixture of multinomial response models governed by a probability distribution over the $J^{\ast} = 2^J -1$ consideration sets. We introduce a novel method for estimating such generalized multinomial response models based on the fundamental result that any mass distribution over $J^{\ast}$ consideration sets can be represented as a mixture of products of $J$ component-specific inclusion-exclusion probabilities. Moreover, under time-invariant consideration sets, the conditional posterior distribution of consideration sets is sparse. These features enable a scalable MCMC algorithm for sampling the posterior distribution of parameters, random effects, and consideration sets. Under regularity conditions, the posterior distributions of the marginal response probabilities and the model parameters satisfy consistency. The methodology is demonstrated in a longitudinal data set on weekly cereal purchases that cover $J = 101$ brands, a dimension substantially beyond the reach of existing methods.

Exact module categories over $\mathrm{Rep}(u_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2))$

We give a complete list of indecomposable exact module categories over the finite tensor category $\mathrm{Rep}(u_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2))$ of representations of the small quantum group $u_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$, where $q$ is a root of unity of odd order. Each of them is given as the category of representations of a left comodule algebra over $u_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ explicitly presented by generators and relations.

Coideal subalgebras of quantum $SL_2$ at roots of unity

We classify right coideal subalgebras of the finite-dimensional quotient of the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ and that of the quantized coordinate algebra $\mathcal{O}_q(SL_2)$ at a root of unity $q$ of odd order. All those coideal subalgebras are described by generators and relations.

Pointed Hopf superalgebras of dimension up to 10

By utilizing the technique introduced in our previous work to construct Hopf superalgebras by an inverse procedure of the Radford-Majid bosonization, we classify non-semisimple pointed Hopf superalgebras of dimension up to 10 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.

Quasi-Frobenius algebras in finite tensor categories

We introduce the notion of a quasi-Frobenius algebra in a finite tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ and give equivalent conditions for an algebra in $\mathcal{C}$ to be quasi-Frobenius. A quasi-Frobenius algebra in $\mathcal{C}$ is not necessarily Frobenius, however, we show that an algebra $A$ in $\mathcal{C}$ is quasi-Frobenius if and only if $A$ is Morita equivalent to a Frobenius algebra in $\mathcal{C}$. We also show that the class of symmetric Frobenius algebras in $\mathcal{C}$ is closed under the Morita equivalence provided that $\mathcal{C}$ is pivotal so that the symmetricity makes sense.

Semiparametric Bayesian Estimation of Dynamic Discrete Choice Models

We propose a tractable semiparametric estimation method for structural dynamic discrete choice models. The distribution of additive utility shocks in the proposed framework is modeled by location-scale mixtures of extreme value distributions with varying numbers of mixture components. Our approach exploits the analytical tractability of extreme value distributions in the multinomial choice settings and the flexibility of the location-scale mixtures. We implement the Bayesian approach to inference using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo and an approximately optimal reversible jump algorithm. In our simulation experiments, we show that the standard dynamic logit model can deliver misleading results, especially about counterfactuals, when the shocks are not extreme value distributed. Our semiparametric approach delivers reliable inference in these settings. We develop theoretical results on approximations by location-scale mixtures in an appropriate distance and posterior concentration of the set identified utility parameters and the distribution of shocks in the model.

Relative Serre functor for comodule algebras

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a finite tensor category, and let $\mathcal{M}$ be an exact left $\mathcal{C}$-module category. The relative Serre functor of $\mathcal{M}$ is an endofunctor $\mathbb{S}$ on $\mathcal{M}$ together with a natural isomorphism $\underline{\mathrm{Hom}}(M, N)^* \cong \underline{\mathrm{Hom}}(N, \mathbb{S}(M))$ for $M, N \in \mathcal{M}$, where $\underline{\mathrm{Hom}}$ is the internal Hom functor of $\mathcal{M}$. In this paper, we discuss the case where $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{M}$ are the category of modules over a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $H$ and the category of modules over an $H$-comodule algebra $L$, respectively. We give an explicit description of the relative Serre functor of $\mathcal{M}$ and its twisted module structure in terms of the Frobenius structure of $L$. We also study pivotal structures on $\mathcal{M}$ and give some concrete examples.

Exact sequences of Frobenius tensor categories

Given a tensor functor between tensor categories $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{D}$, we give criteria that, under certain assumptions, the Frobeniusness of $\mathcal{C}$ or $\mathcal{D}$ implies the Frobeniusness of the other one. We also give an affirmative answer to Natale's question asking if the class of Frobenius tensor categories is closed under exact sequences.

Nakayama functors for coalgebras and their applications to Frobenius tensor categories

We introduce Nakayama functors for coalgebras and investigate their basic properties. These functors are expressed by certain (co)ends as in the finite case discussed by Fuchs, Schaumann, and Schweigert. This observation allows us to define Nakayama functors for Frobenius tensor categories in an intrinsic way. As applications, we establish the categorical Radford $S^4$-formula for Frobenius tensor categories and obtain some related results. These are generalizations of works of Etingof, Nikshych, and Ostrik on finite tensor categories and some known facts on co-Frobenius Hopf algebras.
