Image-processing the topological charge density in the CP(N-1) model

We study the topological charge density distribution using the two-dimensional $CP^{N-1}$ model. We numerically compute not only the topological susceptibility, which is a spatially global quantity to probe topological properties of the whole system, but also the topological charge correlator with finite momentum. We perform Fourier power spectrum analysis for the topological charge density for various values of the inverse temperature $β$. We propose to utilize the Fourier entropy as a convenient measure to characterize spatial distribution patterns and demonstrate that the Fourier entropy exhibits nontrivial temperature dependence. We also consider the snapshot entropy defined with the singular value decomposition, which also turns out to behave nonmonotonically with the temperature. We give a possible interpretation suggested from the strong-coupling analysis.

Anomalous Casimir effect in axion electrodynamics

We study the Casimir effect in axion electrodynamics. A finite $θ$-term affects the energy dispersion relation of photon if $θ$ is time and/or space dependent. We focus on a special case with linearly inhomogeneous $θ$ along the $z$-axis. Then we demonstrate that the Casimir force between two parallel plates perpendicular to the $z$-axis can be either attractive or repulsive, dependent on the gradient of $θ$. We call this repulsive component in the Casimir force induced by inhomogeneous $θ$ the anomalous Casimir effect.

Featuring the topology with the unsupervised machine learning

Images of line drawings are generally composed of primitive elements. One of the most fundamental elements to characterize images is the topology; line segments belong to a category different from closed circles, and closed circles with different winding degrees are nonequivalent. We investigate images with nontrivial winding using the unsupervised machine learning. We build an autoencoder model with a combination of convolutional and fully connected neural networks. We confirm that compressed data filtered from the trained model retain more than 90% of correct information on the topology, evidencing that image clustering from the unsupervised learning features the topology.

Eddy magnetization from the chiral Barnett effect

We discuss the spin, the angular momentum, and the magnetic moment of rotating chiral fermions using a kinetic theory. We find that, in addition to the chiral vortical contribution along the rotation axis, finite circular spin polarization is induced by the spin-momentum correlation of chiral fermions, which is canceled by a change in the orbital angular momentum. We point out that the eddy magnetic moment is nonvanishing due to the $g$-factors, exhibiting the chiral Barnett effect.

Extreme matter in electromagnetic fields and rotation

We look over recent developments on our understanding about relativistic matter under external electromagnetic fields and mechanical rotation. I review various calculational approaches for concrete physics problems, putting my special emphasis on generality of the method and the consequence, rather than going into phenomenological applications in a specific field of physics. The topics covered in this article include static problems with magnetic fields, dynamical problems with electromagnetic fields, and phenomena induced by rotation.

Constraining unintegrated gluon distributions from inclusive photon production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC

We compute the leading order (LO) $qg\to q γ$ and next-to-leading order (NLO) $gg\to q{\bar q} γ$ contributions to inclusive photon production in proton-proton (p+p) collisions at the LHC. These channels provide the dominant contribution at LO and NLO for photon transverse momenta $k_{γ\perp}$ corresponding to momentum fractions of $x\leq 0.01$ in the colliding protons. Our computations, performed in the dilute-dense framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory (CGC EFT), show that the NLO contribution dominates at small-$x$ because it is sensitive to $k_\perp$-dependent unintegrated gluon distributions in both of the protons. We predict a maximal $10\%$ modification of the cross section at low $k_{γ\perp}$ as a direct consequence of the violation of $k_\perp$-factorization. The coherence effects responsible for this modification are enhanced in nuclei and can be identified from inclusive photon measurements in proton-nucleus collisions. We provide numerical results for the isolated inclusive photon cross section for $k_{γ\perp}\leq 20$ GeV in p+p collisions that can be tested in the future at the LHC.

Continuity of vortices from the hadronic to the color-flavor locked phase in dense matter

We study how vortices in dense superfluid hadronic matter can connect to vortices in superfluid quark matter, as in rotating neutron stars, focusing on the extent to which quark-hadron continuity can be maintained. As we show, a singly quantized vortex in three-flavor symmetric hadronic matter can connect smoothly to a singly quantized non-Abelian vortex in three-flavor symmetric quark matter in the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase, without the necessity for boojums appearing at the transition.

Chiral vortical effect with finite rotation, temperature, and curvature

We perform an explicit calculation of the axial current at finite rotation and temperature in curved space. We find that finite curvature and mass corrections to the chiral vortical effect satisfy a relation of the chiral gap effect, that is, a fermion mass-shift by a scalar curvature. We also point out that a product term of the angular velocity and the scalar curvature shares the same coefficient as the mixed gravitational chiral anomaly. We discuss possible applications of the curvature induced chiral vortical effect to rotating astrophysical compact objects described by the Kerr metric. Instead of direct calculation we assume that the Chern-Simons current can approximate the physical axial current. We make a proposal that the chiral vortical current from rotating compact objects could provide a novel microscopic mechanism behind the generation of collimated jets.

Axial Ward identity and the Schwinger mechanism -- Applications to the real-time chiral magnetic effect and condensates

We elucidate chirality production under parity breaking constant electromagnetic fields, with which we clarify qualitative differences in and out of equilibrium. For a strong magnetic field the pair production from the Schwinger mechanism increments the chirality. The pair production rate is exponentially suppressed with mass according to the Schwinger formula, while the mass dependence of chirality production in the axial Ward identity appears in the pesudo-scalar term. We demonstrate that in equilibrium field theory calculus the axial anomaly is canceled by the pseudo-scalar condensate for any mass. In a real-time formulation with in- and out-states, we show that the axial Ward identity leads to the chirality production rate consistent with the Schwinger formula. We illuminate that such an in- and out-states formulation makes clear the chiral magnetic effect in and out of equilibrium, and we discuss further applications to real-time condensates.

Anomaly inflow on QCD axial domain-walls and vortices

We study the chiral effective theory in the presence of QCD vortices. Gauge invariance requires novel terms from vortex singularities in the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten action, which incorporate anomaly induced currents along the vortices. We examine these terms for systems with QCD axial domain-walls bounded by vortices (vortons) under magnetic fields. We discuss how the baryon and the electric charge conservations are satisfied in these systems through interplay between domain-walls and vortices, which manifests Callan-Harvey's mechanism of the anomaly inflow.

Methodology study of machine learning for the neutron star equation of state

We discuss a methodology of machine learning to deduce the neutron star equation of state from a set of mass-radius observational data. We propose an efficient procedure to deal with a mapping from finite data points with observational errors onto an equation of state. We generate training data and optimize the neural network. Using independent validation data (mock observational data) we confirm that the equation of state is correctly reconstructed with precision surpassing observational errors. We finally discuss the relation between our method and Bayesian analysis with an emphasis put on generality of our method for underdetermined problems.

Electric conductivity of hot and dense quark matter in a magnetic field with Landau level resummation via kinetic equations

We compute the electric conductivity of quark matter at finite temperature $T$ and quark chemical potential $μ$ under a magnetic field $B$ beyond the Lowest Landau level approximation. The electric conductivity transverse to $B$ is dominated by the Hall conductivity $σ_H$. For the longitudinal conductivity $σ_\parallel$, we need to solve kinetic equations. Then, we numerically find that $σ_\parallel$ has only mild dependence on $μ$ and the quark mass $m_q$. Moreover, $σ_\parallel$ first decreases and then linearly increases as a function of $B$, leading to an intermediate $B$ region which looks consistent with the experimental signature for the chiral magnetic effect. We also point out that $σ_\parallel$ at nonzero $B$ remains within the range of the lattice-QCD estimate at $B=0$.

Surface Magnetic Catalysis

We study fermions in a magnetic field in a finite size cylinder. With the boundary condition for the fermion flux, we show that the energy spectra and the wave-functions are modified by the finite size effect; the boundary makes the degenerate Landau levels appear only partially for states with small angular momenta, while the boundary effect becomes stronger for states with large angular momenta. We find that mode accumulation at the boundary occurs for large angular momenta and the magnetic effect is enhanced on the boundary surface. Using a simple fermionic model, we quantify the magnetic catalysis, i.e. the magnetic enhancement of the fermion pair condensation, in a finite size cylinder. We confirm that the magnetic catalysis is strongly amplified at the boundary due to the mode accumulation.

General formulae for dipole Wilson line correlators with the Color Glass Condensate

We present general formulae to compute Wilson line correlators with the Color Glass Condensate described by the McLerran-Venugopalan model. We explicitly construct a complete and non-orthogonal set of color-singlet bases and write matrix elements down, so that the exponential of the matrix leads to the Wilson line correlators. We further develop a systematic perturbative expansion of dipole Wilson line correlators in terms of $1/N_c$ where $N_c$ is the color number. As a phenomenological application we calculate the flow harmonics $v_n\{m\}$ in the dipole model and discuss the $N_c$ scaling.

Polyakov loop modeling for hot QCD

We review theoretical aspects of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at finite temperature. The most important physical variable to characterize hot QCD is the Polyakov loop, which is an approximate order parameter for quark deconfinement in a hot gluonic medium. Additionally to its role as an order parameter, the Polyakov loop has rich physical contents in both perturbative and non-perturbative sectors. This review covers a wide range of subjects associated with the Polyakov loop from topological defects in hot QCD to model building with coupling to the Polyakov loop.

Boost invariant formulation of the chiral kinetic theory

We formulate the chiral kinetic equation with the longitudinal boost invariance. We particularly focus on the physical interpretation of the particle number conservation. There appear two terms associated with the expansion, which did not exist in the non-chiral kinetic equation. One is a contribution to the transverse current arising from the side-jump effect, and the other is a change in the density whose flow makes the longitudinal current. We point out a characteristic pattern in the transverse current driven by the expansion, which we call the chiral circular displacement.

Fixed points and flow analysis on off-equilibrium dynamics in the boson Boltzmann equation

We consider fixed points of steady solutions and flow directions using the boson Boltzmann equation that is a one-dimensionally reduced kinetic equation after the angular integration. With an elastic collision integral of the two-to-two scattering process, in the dense (dilute) regime where the distribution function is large (small), the boson Boltzmann equation has approximate fixed points with a power-law spectrum in addition to the thermal distribution function. We argue that the power-law fixed point can be exact in special cases. We elaborate a graphical presentation to display evolving flow directions similarly to the renormalization group flow, which explicitly exhibits how fixed points are connected and parameter space is separated by critical lines. We discuss that such a flow diagram contains useful information on thermalization processes out of equilibrium.

Spatially Assisted Schwinger Mechanism and Magnetic Catalysis

Using the worldline formalism we compute an effective action for fermions under a temporally modulated electric field and a spatially modulated magnetic field. It is known that the former leads to an enhanced Schwinger Mechanism, while we find that the latter can also result in enhanced particle production and even cause a reorganization of the vacuum to acquire a larger dynamical mass in equilibrium which spatially assists the Magnetic Catalysis.
