Evolving Glasma and Kolmogorov Spectrum

We present a pedagogical introduction to the theoretical framework of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) and the McLerran-Venugopalan (MV) model. We discuss the application of the MV model to describe the early-time dynamics of the relativistic heavy-ion collision. Without longitudinal fluctuations the classical time evolution maintains the boost invariance, while an instability develops once fluctuations that break boost invariance are included. We show that this "Glasma instability" enhances rapidity-dependent variations as long as self-interactions among unstable modes stay weak and the system resides in the linear regime. Eventually the amplitude of unstable modes becomes so large that the growth of instability gets saturated. In this non-linear regime the numerical simulations of the Glasma lead to turbulent energy flow from low-frequency modes to higher-frequency modes, which results in a characteristic power-law spectrum. The power found in numerical simulation of the expanding Glasma system turns out to be consistent with Kolmogorov's -5/3 scaling.

QCD matter in extreme environments

We review various theoretical approaches to the states of QCD matter out of quarks and gluons in extreme environments such as the high-temperature states at zero and finite baryon density and the dimensionally reduced state under an intense magnetic field. The topics at high temperature include the Polyakov loop and the 't Hooft loop in the perturbative regime, the Polyakov loop behaviour and the phase transition in some of non-perturbative methods; the strong-coupling expansion, the large-Nc limit and the holographic QCD models. These analyses are extended to hot and dense matter with a finite baryon chemical potential. We point out that the difficulty in the finite-density problem has similarity to that under a strong magnetic field. We make a brief summary of results related to the topological contents probed by the magnetic field and the Chiral Magnetic Effect. We also address the close connection to the (1+1) dimensional system.

Magnetic-field Induced Screening Effect and Collective Excitations

We explicitly construct the fermion propagator in a magnetic field background B to take the lowest Landau-level approximation. We analyze the energy and momentum dependence in the polarization tensor and discuss the collective excitations. We find there appear two branches of collective modes in one of two transverse gauge particles; one represents a massive and attenuated gauge particle and the other behaves similar to the zero sound at finite density.

Effective Model Approach to the Dense State of QCD Matter

The first-principle approach to the dense state of QCD matter, i.e. the lattice-QCD simulation at finite baryon density, is not under theoretical control for the moment. The effective model study based on QCD symmetries is a practical alternative. However the model parameters that are fixed by hadronic properties in the vacuum may have unknown dependence on the baryon chemical potential. We propose a new prescription to constrain the effective model parameters by the matching condition with the thermal Statistical Model. In the transitional region where thermal quantities blow up in the Statistical Model, deconfined quarks and gluons should smoothly take over the relevant degrees of freedom from hadrons and resonances. We use the Polyakov-loop coupled Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model as an effective description in the quark side and show how the matching condition is satisfied by a simple ansatz on the Polyakov loop potential. Our results favor a phase diagram with the chiral phase transition located at slightly higher temperature than deconfinement which stays close to the chemical freeze-out points.

The phase diagram of dense QCD

Current status of theoretical researches on the QCD phase diagram at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential is reviewed with special emphasis on the origin of various phases and their symmetry breaking patterns. Topics include; quark deconfinement, chiral symmetry restoration, order of the phase transitions, QCD critical point(s), colour superconductivity, various inhomogeneous states and implications from QCD-like theories.

Phase diagram of hot and dense QCD constrained by the Statistical Model

We propose a prescription to constrain the chiral effective model approach to the QCD phase diagram using the thermal Statistical Model, which is a description consistent with the experimental data at the freeze-out. In the transition region where thermal quantities of hadrons blow up, deconfined quarks and gluons should smoothly take over the degrees of freedom from hadrons in the Statistical Model. We use the Polyakov-loop coupled Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model as an effective description in the quark side. We require that the validity regions of these descriptions should have an overlap on the phase diagram, which constrains model uncertainty. Our results favor a phase diagram with the chiral phase transition located at slightly higher temperature than deconfinement.

Chiral magnetic effect in the PNJL model

We study the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop (PNJL model) in the presence of a strong magnetic field and a chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ which mimics the effect of imbalanced chirality due to QCD instanton and/or sphaleron transitions. Firstly we focus on the properties of chiral symmetry breaking and deconfinement crossover under the strong magnetic field. Then we discuss the role of $μ_5$ on the phase structure. Finally the chirality charge, electric current, and their susceptibility, which are relevant to the Chiral Magnetic Effect, are computed in the model.

Two-color quark matter: U(1)_A restoration, superfluidity, and quarkyonic phase

We discuss the phase structure of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with two colors and two flavors of light quarks. This is motivated by the increasing interest in the QCD phase diagram as follows: (1) The QCD critical point search has been under intensive dispute and its location and existence suffer from uncertainty of effective U(1)_A symmetry restoration. (2) A new phase called quarkyonic matter is drawing theoretical and experimental attention but it is not clear whether it can coexist with diquark condensation. We point out that two-color QCD is nontrivial enough to contain essential ingredients for (1) and (2) both, and most importantly, is a system without the sign problem in numerical simulations on the lattice. We adopt the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model extended with the two-color Polyakov loop and make quantitative predictions which can be tested by lattice simulations.

Dielectric correction to the Chiral Magnetic Effect

We derive an electric current density $j_{em}$ in the presence of a magnetic field $B$ and a chiral chemical potential $μ_5$. We show that $j_{em}$ has not only the anomaly-induced term $\propto μ_5 B$ (i.e. Chiral Magnetic Effect) but also a non-anomalous correction which comes from interaction effects and expressed in terms of the susceptibility. We find the correction characteristically dependent on the number of quark flavors. The numerically estimated correction turns out to be a minor effect on heavy-ion collisions but can be tested by the lattice QCD simulation.

Real-time dynamics of the Chiral Magnetic Effect

In quantum chromodynamics, a gauge field configuration with nonzero topological charge generates a difference between the number of left- and right-handed quarks. When a (electromagnetic) magnetic field is added to this configuration, an electromagnetic current is induced along the magnetic field; this is called the chiral magnetic effect. We compute this current in the presence of a color flux tube possessing topological charge, with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to it. We argue that this situation is realized at the early stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Electric-current Susceptibility and the Chiral Magnetic Effect

We compute the electric-current susceptibility χof hot quark-gluon matter in an external magnetic field B. The difference between the susceptibilities measured in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field is ultraviolet finite and given by χ^\parallel-χ^\perp = VTN_c\sum_f q_f^2 |q_f B|/(2π^2), where V denotes the volume, T the temperature, N_c the number of colors, and q_f the charge of a quark of flavor f. This non-zero susceptibility difference acts as a background to the Chiral Magnetic Effect, i.e. the generation of electric current along the direction of magnetic field in the presence of topological charge. We propose a description of the Chiral Magnetic Effect that takes into account the fluctuations of electric current quantified by the susceptibility. We find that our results are in agreement with recent lattice QCD calculations. Our approach can be used to model the azimuthal dependence of charge correlations observed in heavy ion collisions.

Model analysis on thermal UV-cutoff effects on the critical boundary in hot QCD

We study the critical boundary on the quark-mass plane associated with the chiral phase transition in QCD at finite temperature. We point out that the critical boundaries obtained from the Lattice QCD simulation and the chiral effective model are significantly different; in the (Polyakov-loop coupled) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model we find that the critical mass is about one order of magnitude smaller than the value reported in the Lattice QCD case. It is known in the Lattice QCD study that the critical mass goes smaller in the continuum limit along the temporal direction. To investigate the temporal UV-cutoff effects quantitatively we consider the (P)NJL model with only finite $N_τ$ Matsubara frequencies taken in the summation. We confirm that the critical mass in such a UV-tamed NJL model becomes larger with decreasing $N_τ$, which demonstrates a correct tendency to explain the difference between the Lattice QCD and chiral model results.

Melting Spectral Functions of the Scalar and Vector Mesons in a Holographic QCD Model

We investigate the finite-temperature spectral functions of heavy quarkonia by using the soft-wall AdS/QCD model. We discuss the scalar, the pseudo-scalar, the vector, and the axial-vector mesons and compare their qualitative features of the melting temperature and growing width. We find that the axial-vector meson melts earlier than the vector meson, while there appears only a slight difference between the scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons which also melt earlier than the vector meson.

U_A(1) Anomaly in Hot and Dense QCD and the Critical Surface

We discuss the chiral phase transition in hot and dense QCD with three light flavors. Inspired by the well known fact that the U_A(1) anomaly could induce first order phase transitions, we study the effect of the possible restoration of the U_A(1) symmetry at finite density. In particular, we explore the link between the U_A(1) restoration and the recent lattice QCD results of de Forcrand and Philipsen, in which the first order phase transition region near zero chemical potential (mu) shrinks in the quark mass and mu space when mu is increased. Starting from the Ginzburg-Landau theory for general discussions, we then use the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model for quantitative studies. With the partial U_A(1) restoration modeled by the density dependent 't Hooft interaction, we fit the shrinking of the critical surface found in de Forcrand and Philipsen's lattice calculation at low mu. At higher mu, the critical surface might shrink or expand, depending on the scenarios. This raises the possibility that despite the shrinking of the critical surface at lower mu, the QCD critical end point might still exist due to the expansion at higher mu. In this case, very high precision lattice data will be needed to detect the back-bending of the critical surface with the currently available analytic continuation or Taylor expansion approaches. Lattice computations could, however, test whether the U_A(1) restoration is responsible for the shrinking of the critical surface by computing eta' mass or the topological susceptibility at small mu.

Gauge dynamics in the PNJL model: Color neutrality and Casimir scaling

We discuss a gauge-invariant prescription to take the mean-field approximation self-consistently in the PNJL model (Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop). We first address the problem of non-vanishing color density in normal quark matter, which is an artifact arising from gauge-fixed treatment of the Polyakov loop mean-fields. We then confirm that the gauge average incorporated in our prescription resolves this problem and ensures color neutrality. We point out that the proposed method has an advantage in computing the expectation value of any function of the Polyakov loop matrix. We discuss the Casimir scaling as an immediate application of the method.

Finite-temperature spectral function of the vector mesons in an AdS/QCD model

We use the soft-wall AdS/QCD model to investigate the finite-temperature effects on the spectral function in the vector channel. The dissociation of the vector meson tower onto the AdS black hole leads to the in-medium mass shift and the width broadening in a way similar to the lattice QCD results for the heavy quarkonium at finite temperature. We also show the momentum dependence of the spectral function and find it consistent with screening in a hot wind.

Isentropic thermodynamics in the PNJL model

We discuss the isentropic trajectories on the QCD phase diagram in the temperature and the quark chemical potential plane using the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop coupling (PNJL model). We impose a constraint on the strange quark chemical potential so that the strange quark density is zero, which is the case in the ultra relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We compare our numerical results with the truncated estimates by the Taylor expansion in terms of the chemical potential to quantify the reliability of the expansion used in the lattice QCD simulation. We finally discuss the strange quark chemical potential induced by the strangeness neutrality condition and relate it to the ratio of the Polyakov loop and the anti-Polyakov loop.

Critical surface in hot and dense QCD with the vector interaction

We discuss the chiral phase transition of hot and dense quark matter. We illustrate that the first-order phase transition is generally favored at high baryon density and the repulsive vector-vector interaction weakens the first-order phase transition. We use the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop coupling for concreteness. We locate the QCD critical surface on the quark mass plane for various values of the vector coupling constant. We find that, with increasing quark chemical potential, the first-order region in the quark mass plane could shrink for sufficiently large vector coupling. This may be a possible explanation for the recent lattice QCD results by de Forcrand and Philipsen.
