Low-lying excitations at the rare-earth site due to rattling motion in the filled skutterudite LaOs_4Sb_{12} revealed by ^{139}La NMR and ^{121/123}Sb NQR

We report experimental results of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at the La site and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) at the Sb site in the filled skutterudite LaOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. We found that the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_1T$ at the La site exhibits a different temperature dependence from that at the Sb site. Although $1/T_1T$ at the Sb site is explained by the Korringa mechanism, $1/T_1T$ at the La site exhibits a broad maximum around 50 K, showing the presence of an additional contribution at the La site. The additional low-lying excitations observed at the La site can be understood with the relaxation from anharmonic phonons due to the rattling motion of the La atoms.

Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Fluctuations and Anomalous Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in UCoGe Revealed by Co-NMR and NQR Studies

Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies were performed in the recently discovered UCoGe, in which the ferromagnetic and superconducting (SC) transitions were reported to occur at $T_{\rm Curie} \sim 3$ K and $T_S \sim 0.8$ K (N. T. Huy {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99} (2007) 067006), in order to investigate the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity as well as the normal-state and SC properties from a microscopic point of view. From the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and Knight-shift measurements, we confirmed that ferromagnetic fluctuations which possess a quantum critical character are present above $T_{\rm Curie}$ and the occurrence of ferromagnetic transition at 2.5 K in our polycrystalline sample. The magnetic fluctuations in the normal state show that UCoGe is an itinerant ferromagnet similar to ZrZn$_2$ and YCo$_2$. The onset SC transition was identified at $T_S \sim 0.7$ K, below which $1/T_1$ of 30 % of the volume fraction starts to decrease due to the opening of the SC gap. This component of $1/T_1$, which follows a $T^3$ dependence in the temperature range of $0.3 - 0.1$ K, coexists with the magnetic components of $1/T_1$ showing a $\sqrt{T}$ dependence below $T_S$. From the NQR measurements in the SC state, we suggest that the self-induced vortex state is realized in UCoGe.

Metamagnetic Quantum Criticality Revealed by 17O-NMR in the Itinerant Metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7

We have investigated the spin dynamics in the bilayered perovskite Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of magnetic field and temperature using 17O-NMR. This system sits close to a metamagnetic quantum critical point (MMQCP) for the field perpendicular to the ruthenium oxide planes. We confirm Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures except for a narrow field region close to the MMQCP. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature 1/T1T is enhanced on approaching the metamagnetic critical field of 7.9 T and at the critical field 1/T1T continues to increase and does not show Fermi- liquid behavior down to 0.3 K. The temperature dependence of T1T in this region suggests the critical temperature Theta to be 0 K, which is a strong evidence that the spin dynamics possesses a quantum critical character. Comparison between uniform susceptibility and 1/T1T reveals that antiferromagnetic fluctuations instead of two-dimensional ferromagnetic fluctuations dominate the spin fluctuation spectrum at the critical field, which is unexpected for itinerant metamagnetism.

$^{17}$O NMR Measurements on Superconducting Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2} \cdot y$H$_{2}$O

An $^{17}$O NMR measurement was performed on nonoriented polycrystalline Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2 \cdot y$H$_2$O with superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_\text{c} = 4.6$ K. A weak temperature dependence was observed in the Knight shift at the O site ($^{17}K$). The spin part of $^{17}K$ ($^{17}K_{\rm spin}$) is estimated from the plot of $^{17}K$ against bulk susceptibility $χ$. The $^{17}K_{\rm spin}$ decreases in the SC state, indicative of the decrease in the in-plane component of the spin susceptibility. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ at the O site $^{17}(1/T_1)$ shows a good scaling with $1/T_1$ at the Co site $^{59}(1/T_1)$. This indicates that the spin fluctuations at the O site originate from the Co spin dynamics. The relationships between $^{17}(1/T_1T)$ and $^{17}K_{\rm spin}$ and between $^{17}(1/T_1T)$ and $^{59}(1/T_1T)$ show the development of incommensurate fluctuations at {\bf q $\sim$ 0} other than {\bf q $=$ 0} below 30 K. A clear indication of ferromagnetic correlations at {\bf q $=$ 0} was not observed from the present $^{17}$O-NMR studies.

Quasiparticle spin susceptibility in heavy-fermion superconductors : An NMR study compared with specific heat results

Quasi-particle spin susceptibility ($χ^{qp}$) for various heavy-fermion (HF) superconductors are discussed on the basis of the experimental results of electronic specific heat ($γ_{el}$), NMR Knight shift ($K$) and NMR relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) within the framework of the Fermi liquid model for a Kramers doublet crystal electric field (CEF) ground state. $χ^{qp}_γ$ is calculated from the enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient $γ_{el}$ and $χ^{qp}_{T_1}$ from the quasi-particle Korringa relation $T_1T(K^{qp}_{T_1})^2=const.$ via the relation of $χ^{qp}_{T_1}=(N_Aμ_B/A_{hf})K^{qp}_{T_1}$ where $A_{hf}$ is the hyperfine coupling constant, $N_A$ the Abogadoro's number and $μ_B$ the Bohr magneton. For the even-parity (spin-singlet) superconductors CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, CeCoIn$_5$ and UPd$_2$Al$_3$, the fractional decrease in the Knight shift, $δK^{obs}$, below the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) is due to the decrease of the spin susceptibility of heavy quasi-particle estimated consistently from $χ^{qp}_γ$ and $χ^{qp}_{T_1}$. This result allows us to conclude that the heavy quasi-particles form the spin-singlet Cooper pairs in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, CeCoIn$_5$ and UPd$_2$Al$_3$. On the other hand, no reduction in the Knight shift is observed in UPt$_3$ and UNi$_2$Al$_3$, nevertheless the estimated values of $χ^{qp}_γ$ and $χ^{qp}_{T_1}$ are large enough to be probed experimentally. The odd-parity superconductivity is therefore concluded in these compounds. The NMR result provides a convincing way to classify the HF superconductors into either even- or odd- parity paring together with the identification for the gap structure, as long as the system has Kramers degeneracy.

Investigation into the Itinerant metamagnetism of Sr3Ru2O7 for the Field Parallel to the Ruthenium Oxygen Planes

We report a detailed investigation into the metamagnetism of Sr3Ru2O7 at low temperatures for the magnetic field parallel to the ruthenium oxygen planes. The metamagnetism is studied as a function of temperature, magnetic field and sample quality using magnetisation, magnetotransport and specific heat as probes. From hysteretic behaviour in the magnetisation, we confirm earlier work and observe a finite temperature critical point at (5 T, >0.25 K). In our highest quality samples two-step metamagnetic transitions are additionally observed at 5.8 T and at 6.3 T, which coincide with a range of broad maximum in the magnetoresistance. At low temperatures, these two metamagnetic features each further split in two. Such behaviour of the multiple transitions are qualitatively different from the first order transition at 5.1 T.

Possible unconventional superconductivity in Na$_x$CoO$_2$yH$_2$O probed by $μ$SR

The superconducting property of recently discovered sodium cobalt oxyhydrate, Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2$1.3H$_2$O ($T_c=4.5$ K), has been studied by means of muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) down to 2 K. It was found that the zero-field muon spin relaxation rate is independent of the temperature, indicating that no static magnetism appears in this compound, at least above 2 K. The result also provides evidence against the breakdown of time-reversal symmetry for the superconducting order parameter. Meanwhile, the muon Knight shift at 60 kOe shows no obvious reduction below $T_c$, suggesting that the local spin susceptibility is preserved upon a superconducting transition. Considering these observations, possible unconventional superconductivity of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2$1.3H$_2$O is discussed.
