The Legacy of Hideki Yukawa, Sin-itiro Tomonaga, and Shoichi Sakata: Some Aspects from their Archives

Hideki Yukawa, Sin-itiro Tomonaga and Shoichi Sakata pioneered nuclear and particle physics and left enduring legacies. Their friendly collaboration and severe competition laid the foundation to bring up the active postwar generation of nuclear and particle physicists in Japan. In this presentation we illustrate milestones of nuclear and particle physics in Japan from 1930's to mid-1940's which have been clarified in Yukawa Hall Archival Library, Tomonaga Memorial Room and Sakata Memorial Archival Library.

Multiple point adsorption in a heteropolymer gel and the Tanaka approach to imprinting: Experiment and Theory

Heteropolymer gels can be engineered to release specific molecules into or absorb molecules from a surrounding solution. This remarkable ability is the basis for developing gel applications in extensive areas such as drug delivery, waste cleanup, and catalysis. Furthermore, gels are a model system for proteins, many of whose properties they can be created to mimic. A key aspect of gels is their volume phase transition, which provides a macroscopic mechanism for effecting microscopic changes. The phase transition allows one to control the gel's affinity for target molecules through tiny changes in the solution temperature, salt concentration, pH, or the like. We summarize recent experiments that systematically characterize the gel affinity as a function of adsorbing monomer concentration, solution salt concentration, and cross-linker concentration, on both sides of the phase transition. We provide a physical theory that explains the results and discuss enhancements via imprinting.

Mass inequalities in two dimensional gauged four fermi models

We quantitatively analyze the meson mass inequality relations of two dimensional gauged four fermi models in the large N limit. The class of models we study includes the 't Hooft model, the chiral and non-chiral Gross-Neveu models as special points in the space of field theories. Cases where the chiral symmetry is spontaneously or explicitly broken are both studied. We study the meson mass inequality quantitatively and define a susceptibility which allows us to systematically analyze the inequality. In the generalized Gross-Neveu model limit, we derive an analytic expression for this susceptibility. Even though no analytic proof of the validity of the classic mass inequality exists for the generic case, the mass inequality is found to be positive throughout most of the parameter space. We point out that the inequality might be negative in certain cases.

An Exact Solution of BPS Junctions and Its Properties

We have obtained an exact solution for the BPS domain wall junction for a N=1 supersymmetric theory in four dimensions and studied its properties. The model is a simplified version of the N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with N_f=1 broken to N=1 by the mass of the adjoint chiral superfield. We define mode equations and demonstrate explicitly that fermion and boson with the same mass have to come in pairs except massless modes. We work out explicitly massless Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes on the BPS domain wall junction. We find that their wave functions extend along the wall to infinity (not localized) and are not normalizable. It is argued that this feature is a generic phenomenon of NG modes on domain wall junctions in the bulk flat space in any dimensions. NG fermions exhibit a chiral structure in accordance with unitary representations of (1, 0) supersymmetry algebra where fermion and boson with the same mass come in pairs except massless modes which can appear singly.

Nonnormalizable Zero Modes on BPS Junctions

Using an exact solution as a concrete example, Nambu-Goldstone modes on the BPS domain wall junction are worked out for N=1 supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. Their wave functions extend along the wall to infinity (not localized) and are not normalizable. It is argued that this feature is a generic phenomenon of Nambu-Goldstone modes on domain wall junctions in the bulk flat space in any dimensions. We formulate mode equations and show that fermion and boson with the same mass come in pairs except massless modes which can appear singly, in accordance with unitary representations of (1, 0) supersymmetry.

An Exact Solution of BPS Domain Wall Junction

An exact solution of domain wall junction is obtained in a four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric U(1) X U(1)' gauge theory with three pairs of chiral superfields which is motivated by the N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with one flavor perturbed by an adjoint scalar mass. The solution allows us to evaluate various quantities including a new central charge Y_k associated with the junction besides Z_k which appears already in domain walls. We find that the new central charge Y_k gives a negative contribution to the mass of the domain wall junction whereas the central charge Z_k gives a dominant positive contribution. One has to be cautious to identify the central charge Y_k alone as the mass of the junction.

Physics of the gauged four fermi model in $(1+1)$ dimensions

We analyze a two dimensional model of gauged fermions with quartic couplings in the large-N limit. This combines the 't Hooft model and the Gross-Neveu model where the coupling constants of both theories are arbitrary. Analytic equations describing the meson states of the theory are derived and are solved systematically using various methods. The physics of the model is investigated.
