dNLS Flow on Discrete Space Curves

The local induction equation, or the binormal flow on space curves is a well-known model of deformation of space curves as it describes the dynamics of vortex filaments, and the complex curvature is governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). In this paper, we present its discrete analogue, namely, a model of deformation of discrete space curves by the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (dNLS). We also present explicit formulas for both NLS and dNLS flows in terms of the $τ$ function of the 2-component KP hierarchy.

Discrete mKdV and Discrete Sine-Gordon Flows on Discrete Space Curves

In this paper, we consider the discrete deformation of the discrete space curves with constant torsion described by the discrete mKdV or the discrete sine-Gordon equations, and show that it is formulated as the torsion-preserving equidistant deformation on the osculating plane which satisfies the isoperimetric condition. The curve is reconstructed from the deformation data by using the Sym-Tafel formula. The isoperimetric equidistant deformation of the space curves does not preserve the torsion in general. However, it is possible to construct the torsion-preserving deformation by tuning the deformation parameters. Further, it is also possible to make an arbitrary choice of the deformation described by the discrete mKdV equation or by the discrete sine-Gordon equation at each step. We finally show that the discrete deformation of discrete space curves yields the discrete K-surfaces.

Integrable discretizations of the Dym equation

Integrable discretizations of the complex and real Dym equations are proposed. N-soliton solutions for both semi-discrete and fully discrete analogues of the complex and real Dym equations are also presented.

Toda lattice hierarchy and Goldstein-Petrich flows for plane curves

A relation between the Goldstein-Petrich hierarchy for plane curves and the Toda lattice hierarchy is investigated. A representation formula for plane curves is given in terms of a special class of $τ$-functions of the Toda lattice hierarchy. A representation formula for discretized plane curves is also discussed.

Hypergeometric solutions to the symmetric q-Painlevé equations

We consider the symmetric q-Painlevé equations derived from the birational representation of affine Weyl groups by applying the projective reduction and construct the hypergeometric solutions. Moreover, we discuss continuous limits of the symmetric q-Painlevé equations to Painlevé equations together with their hypergeometric solutions.

An explicit formula for the discrete power function associated with circle patterns of Schramm type

We present an explicit formula for the discrete power function introduced by Bobenko, which is expressed in terms of the hypergeometric τfunctions for the sixth Painlevé equation. The original definition of the discrete power function imposes strict conditions on the domain and the value of the exponent. However, we show that one can extend the value of the exponent to arbitrary complex numbers except even integers and the domain to a discrete analogue of the Riemann surface. Moreover, we show that the discrete power function is an immersion when the real part of the exponent is equal to one.

Explicit solutions to the semi-discrete modified KdV equation and motion of discrete plane curves

We construct explicit solutions to continuous motion of discrete plane curves described by a semi-discrete potential modified KdV equation. Explicit formulas in terms the $τ$ function are presented. Bäcklund transformations of the discrete curves are also discussed. We finally consider the continuous limit of discrete motion of discrete plane curves described by the discrete potential modified KdV equation to motion of smooth plane curves characterized by the potential modified KdV equation.

Motion and Bäcklund Transformations of Discrete Plane Curves

We construct explicit solutions to the discrete motion of discrete plane curves that has been introduced by one of the authors recently. Explicit formulas in terms the $τ$ function are presented. Transformation theory of the motions of both smooth and discrete curves is developed simultaneously.

Discrete Integrable Systems and Hodograph Transformations Arising from Motions of Discrete Plane Curves

We consider integrable discretizations of some soliton equations associated with the motions of plane curves: the Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa elastic beam equation, the complex Dym equation, and the short pulse equation. They are related to the modified KdV or the sine-Gordon equations by the hodograph transformations. Based on the observation that the hodograph transformations are regarded as the Euler-Lagrange transformations of the curve motions, we construct the discrete analogues of the hodograph transformations, which yield integrable discretizations of those soliton equations.

Bilinearization and Special Solutions to the Discrete Schwarzian KdV Equation

Various solutions to the discrete Schwarzian KdV equation are discussed. We first derive the bilinear difference equations of Hirota type of the discrete Schwarzian KP equation, which is decomposed into three discrete two-dimensional Toda lattice equations. We then construct two kinds of solutions in terms of the Casorati determinant. We derive the discrete Schwarzian KdV equation on an inhomogeneous lattice and its solutions by a reduction process. We finally discuss the solutions in terms of the $τ$ functions of some Painlevé systems.

Projective reduction of the discrete Painlevé system of type $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$

We consider the q-Painlevé III equation arising from the birational representation of the affine Weyl group of type $(A_2 + A_1)^{(1)}$. We study the reduction of the q-Painlevé III equation to the q-Painlevé II equation from the viewpoint of affine Weyl group symmetry. In particular, the mechanism of apparent inconsistency between the hypergeometric solutions to both equations is clarified by using factorization of difference operators and the $τ$ functions.

The discrete potential Boussinesq equation and its multisoliton solutions

An alternate form of discrete potential Boussinesq equation is proposed and its multisoliton solutions are constructed. An ultradiscrete potential Boussinesq equation is also obtained from the discrete potential Boussinesq equation using the ultradiscretization technique. The detail of the multisoliton solutions is discussed by using the reduction technique. The lattice potential Boussinesq equation derived by Nijhoff et al. is also investigated by using the singularity confinement test. The relation between the proposed alternate discrete potential Boussinesq equation and the lattice potential Boussinesq equation by Nijhoff et al. is clarified.

Ultradiscretization of a solvable two-dimensional chaotic map associated with the Hesse cubic curve

We present a solvable two-dimensional piecewise linear chaotic map which arises from the duplication map of a certain tropical cubic curve. Its general solution is constructed by means of the ultradiscrete theta function. We show that the map is derived by the ultradiscretization of the duplication map associated with the Hesse cubic curve. We also show that it is possible to obtain the nontrivial ultradiscrete limit of the solution in spite of a problem known as "the minus-sign problem."

Ultradiscretization of solvable one-dimensional chaotic maps

We consider the ultradiscretization of a solvable one-dimensional chaotic map which arises from the duplication formula of the elliptic functions. It is shown that ultradiscrete limit of the map and its solution yield the tent map and its solution simultaneously. A geometric interpretation of the dynamics of the tent map is given in terms of the tropical Jacobian of a certain tropical curve. Generalization to the maps corresponding to the $m$-th multiplication formula of the elliptic functions is also discussed.

A remark on the Hankel determinant formula for solutions of the Toda equation

We consider the Hankel determinant formula of the $τ$ functions of the Toda equation. We present a relationship between the determinant formula and the auxiliary linear problem, which is characterized by a compact formula for the $τ$ functions in the framework of the KP theory. Similar phenomena that have been observed for the Painlevé II and IV equations are recovered. The case of finite lattice is also discussed.

Hypergeometric Solutions to the q-Painlevé Equation of Type $(A_1+A_1')^{(1)}$

A class of classical solutions to the $q$-Painlevé equation of type $(A_1+A_1')^{(1)}$ (a $q$-difference analog of the Painlevé II equation) is constructed in a determinantal form with basic hypergeometric function elements. The continuous limit of this $q$-Painlevé equation to the Painlevé II equation and its hypergeometric solutions are discussed. The continuous limit of these hypergeometric solutions to the Airy function is obtained through a uniform asymptotic expansion of their integral representation.
