Conifold Transitions in M-theory on Calabi-Yau Fourfolds with Background Fluxes

We consider topology changing transitions for M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds with background G-flux. The local geometry of the transition is generically a genus g curve of conifold singularities, which engineers a 3d gauge theory with four supercharges, near the intersection of Coulomb and Higgs branches. We identify a set of canonical, minimal flux quanta which solve the local quantization condition on G for a given geometry, including new solutions in which the flux is neither of horizontal nor vertical type. A local analysis of the flux superpotential shows that the potential has flat directions for a subset of these fluxes and the topologically different phases can be dynamically connected. For special geometries and background configurations, the local transitions extend to extremal transitions between global fourfold compactifications with flux. By a circle decompactification the M-theory analysis identifies consistent flux configurations in four-dimensional F-theory compactifications and flat directions in the deformation space of branes with bundles.

Isotropic Landau levels of Dirac fermions in high dimensions

We generalize the Landau levels of two-dimensional Dirac fermions to three dimensions and above with the full rotational symmetry. Similarly to the two-dimensional case, there exists a branch of zero energy Landau levels of fractional fermion modes for the massless Dirac fermions. The spectra of other Landau levels distribute symmetrically with respect to the zero energy scaling with the square root of the Landau-level indices. This mechanism is a nonminimal coupling of Dirac fermions to the background fields. This high dimensional relativistic Landau-level problem is a square-root problem of its previous studied nonrelativistic version investigated in Li and Wu [arXiv:1103.5422 (2011)].

Superconformally Covariant OPE and General Gauge Mediation

We consider using broken superconformal symmetry and the super operator product expansion (sOPE) to constrain and analyze hidden sector theories that couple to our gauge forces and are not necessarily weakly coupled. Conformal and supersymmetry breaking are IR effects, associated with field or spurion expectation values, whereas the sOPE is determined in the UV and hence does not notice the breaking. The broken superconformal symmetry relates OPE coefficients of superconformal descendant operators to those of the superconformal primaries. We apply these ideas to the current correlators of general gauge mediation (GGM). We also consider analyticity properties of these correlators, e.g. their discontinuities, and use the optical theorem to relate them to total scattering cross sections from visible to hidden sector states, e.g. sigma(vis + vis --> hidden), analogous to sigma(e+ e- --> hadrons) in QCD. We discuss how the current-current OPE can be truncated to the first few terms to get a good approximation to the visible sector soft masses of GGM.

General Gauge Mediation with Gauge Messengers

We generalize the General Gauge Mediation formalism to allow for the possibility of gauge messengers. Gauge messengers occur when charged matter fields of the susy-breaking sector have non-zero F-terms, which leads to tree-level, susy-breaking mass splittings in the gauge fields. A classic example is that SU(5) / SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge fields could be gauge messengers. We give a completely general, model independent, current-algebra based analysis of gauge messenger mediation of susy-breaking to the visible sector. Characteristic aspects of gauge messengers include enhanced contributions to gaugino masses, (tachyonic) sfermion mass-squareds generated already at one loop, and also at two loops, and significant one-loop A-terms, already at the messenger scale.

Surveying Pseudomoduli: the Good, the Bad and the Incalculable

We classify possible types of pseudomoduli which arise when supersymmetry is dynamically broken in infrared-free low-energy theories. We show that, even if the pseudomoduli potential is generated only at higher loops, there is a regime where the potential can be simply determined from a combination of one-loop running data. In this regime, we compute whether the potential for the various types of pseudomoduli is safe, has a dangerous runaway to the UV cutoff of the low-energy theory, or is incalculable. Our results are applicable to building new models of supersymmetry breaking. We apply the results to survey large classes of models.

Comments on General Gauge Mediation

There has been interest in generalizing models of gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking. As shown by Meade, Seiberg, and Shih (MSS), the soft masses of general gauge mediation can be expressed in terms of the current two-point functions of the susy-breaking sector. We here give a simple extension of their result which provides, for general gauge mediation, the full effective potential for squark pseudo-D-flat directions. The effective potential reduces to the sfermion soft masses near the origin, and the full potential, away from the origin, can be useful for cosmological applications. We also generalize the soft masses and effective potential to allow for general gauge mediation by Higgsed gauge groups. Finally, we discuss general gauge mediation in the limit of small F-terms, and how the results of MSS connect with the analytic continuation in superspace results, based on a spurion analysis.

Comments on Unparticles

We comment on several points concerning unparticles which have been overlooked in the literature. One regards Mack's unitarity constraint lower bounds on CFT operator dimensions,e.g. d\geq 3 for primary, gauge invariant, vector unparticle operators. We correct the results in the literature to account for this, and also for a needed correction in the form of the propagator for vector and tensor unparticles. We show that the unitarity constraints can be directly related to unitarity requirements on scattering amplitudes of particles, e.g. those of the standard model, coupled to the CFT operators. We also stress the existence of explicit standard model contact terms, which are generically induced by the coupling to the CFT (or any other hidden sector), and are subject to LEP bounds. Barring an unknown mechanism to tune away these contact interactions, they can swamp interference effects generated by the CFT. We illustrate these points in the context of a weakly coupled CFT example. A significant amount of the unparticle literature should be reconsidered in light of the observations in this note.

Lectures on Supersymmetry Breaking

We review the subject of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. First we consider supersymmetry breaking in a semiclassical theory. We illustrate it with several examples, demonstrating different phenomena, including metastable supersymmetry breaking. Then we give a brief review of the dynamics of supersymmetric gauge theories. Finally, we use this dynamics to present various mechanisms for dynamical supersymmetry breaking. These notes are based on lectures given by the authors in 2007, at various schools.

Supersymmetry Breaking, R-Symmetry Breaking and Metastable Vacua

Models of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking generically have an R-symmetry, which is problematic for obtaining gaugino masses and avoiding light R-axions. The situation is improved in models of metastable supersymmetry breaking, which generically have only an approximate R-symmetry. Based on this we argue, with mild assumptions, that metastable supersymmetry breaking is inevitable. We also illustrate various general issues regarding spontaneous and explicit R-symmetry breaking, using simple toy models of supersymmetry breaking.

Dynamical SUSY Breaking in Meta-Stable Vacua

Dynamical supersymmetry breaking in a long-lived meta-stable vacuum is a phenomenologically viable possibility. This relatively unexplored avenue leads to many new models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking. Here, we present a surprisingly simple class of models with meta-stable dynamical supersymmetry breaking: N=1 supersymmetric QCD, with massive flavors. Though these theories are strongly coupled, we definitively demonstrate the existence of meta-stable vacua by using the free-magnetic dual. Model building challenges, such as large flavor symmetries and the absence of an R-symmetry, are easily accommodated in these theories. Their simplicity also suggests that broken supersymmetry is generic in supersymmetric field theory and in the landscape of string vacua.

The Runaway Quiver

We point out that some recently proposed string theory realizations of dynamical supersymmetry breaking actually do not break supersymmetry in the usual desired sense. Instead, there is a runaway potential, which slides down to a supersymmetric vacuum at infinite expectation values for some fields. The runaway direction is not on a separated branch; rather, it shows up as a"tadpole" everywhere on the moduli space of field expectation values.

IR Free or Interacting? A Proposed Diagnostic

We present and discuss a conjectured criterion for determining whether a 4d quantum field theory is IR free, or flows to an interacting conformal field theory in the infrared: ``the correct infrared phase is that with the larger conformal anomaly $a$". A stronger conjecture is that ``an operator can become IR free only if that results in a larger conformal anomaly $a$". We test these conjectures in the context of N=1 supersymmetric theories. They are verified to indeed predict the correct IR phase in every tested case, for a plethora of examples for which the infrared phase could already be determined on other grounds. When applied to the still unsettled case of SU(2) with a chiral superfield in the isospin 3/2 representation, the conjecture suggest that the IR phase is conformal rather than confining.

Maximally Supersymmetric RG Flows and AdS Duality

We discuss four dimensional renormalization group flows which preserve sixteen supersymmetries. In the infra-red, these can be viewed as deformations of the N=4 superconformal fixed points by special, irrelevant operators. It is argued that the gauge coupling beta function continues to vanish identically, for all coupling constants and energy scales, for such RG flows. In addition, the dimensions of all operators in short supersymmetry representations are constant along such flows. It is conjectured that there is a generalization of the AdS/CFT holography correspondence which describes such flows, e.g. the D3 brane vacuum before taking the near-horizon limit, at all energy scales. RG flows in three and six dimensions, preserving 16 supersymmetries, are also briefly discussed, including a conjectured generalized AdS/CFT duality for the M2 and M5 brane cases. Finally, we discuss maximally supersymmetric RG flows associated with non-commutative geometry.

Anomaly Matching and a Hopf-Wess-Zumino Term in 6d, N=(2,0) Field Theories

We point out that the low energy theory of 6d, N=(2,0) field theories, when away from the origin of the moduli space of vacua, necessarily includes a new kind of Wess-Zumino term. The form of this term is related to the Hopf invariant associated with π_7 (S^4). The coefficient of the Wess-Zumino term is fixed by an anomaly matching relation for a global flavor symmetry. For example, in the context of a single M5 brane probe in the background of N distant M5 branes, the probe must have the Hopf-WZ term with coefficient proportional to N(N+1). Various related checks and observations are made. We also point out that there are skyrmionic strings, and propose that they are the W-boson strings.

Compactified Little String Theories and Compact Moduli Spaces of Vacua

It is emphasized that compactified little string theories have compact moduli spaces of vacua, which globally probe compact string geometry. Compactifying various little string theories on T^3 leads to 3d theories with exact, quantum Coulomb branch given by: an arbitrary T^4 of volume M_s^2, an arbitrary K3 of volume M_s^2, and moduli spaces of G=SU(N), SO(2N), or E_{6,7,8} instantons on an arbitrary T^4 or K3 of fixed volume. Compactifying instead on a T^2 leads to 4d theories with a compact Coulomb branch base which, when combined with the exact photon gauge coupling fiber, is a compact, elliptically-fibered space related to the above spaces.

Bonus Symmetry and the Operator Product Expansion of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills

The superconformal group of N=4 super-Yang-Mills has two types of operator representations: short and long. We conjecture that operator product expansions for which at least two of the three operators are short exactly respect a bonus U(1)_Y R-symmetry, which acts as an automorphism of the superconformal group. This conjecture is for arbitrary gauge group G and gauge coupling g_{YM}. A consequence is that n\leq 4-point functions involving only short operators exactly respect the U(1)_Y symmetry, as has been previously conjectured based on AdS duality. This, in turn, would imply that all n\leq 3 -point functions involving only short operators are not renormalized, as has also been previously conjectured and subjected to perturbative checks. It is argued that instantons are compatible with our conjecture. Some perturbative checks of the conjecture are presented and SL(2,Z) modular transformation properties are discussed.

Bonus Symmetries of N=4 Super-Yang-Mills Correlation Functions via AdS Duality

General conjectures about the SL(2,Z) modular transformation properties of N=4 super-Yang-Mills correlation functions are presented. It is shown how these modular transformation properties arise from the conjectured duality with IIB string theory on AdS_5 x S^5. We discuss in detail a prediction of the AdS duality: that N=4 field theory, in an appropriate limit, must exhibit bonus symmetries, corresponding to the enhanced symmetries of IIB string theory in its supergravity limit.
