Spatially Extended [P II]1.188um and [Fe II]1.257um Emission Lines in a Nearby Seyfert Galaxy NGC 1068 Observed with OAO/ISLE

We present J-band long-slit spectroscopic observation of NGC 1068 classified as a Seyfert 2 galaxy. J-band observations with OAO/ISLE provide clear detection of spatially extended [Fe II]1.257um and [P II]1.188um lines. We found that [Fe II]1.257um/[P II]1.188um increases with distance from a central continuum peak. Observed line ratios around the nucleus (continuum peak) are consistent with a typical value expected from photoionization models, while the ratios at 3" - 4" (210-280 pc) east and west of the nucleus are slightly higher than this. In the off nucleus region of NGC 1068 we also found a possible association between [Fe II]1.257um/[P II]1.188um and the radio continuum. This suggests a mild contribution of shock ionization induced by a radio jet outside nucleus while photoionization by the central energy source is dominant near the nucleus.

Optical and Near-Infrared Photometry of Nova V2362 Cyg : Rebrightening Event and Dust Formation

We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of a classical nova, V2362 Cyg (= Nova Cygni 2006). V2362 Cyg experienced a peculiar rebrightening with a long duration from 100 to 240 d after the maximum of the nova. Our multicolor observation indicates an emergence of a pseudophotosphere with an effective temperature of 9000 K at the rebrightening maximum. After the rebrightening maximum, the object showed a slow fading homogeneously in all of the used bands for one week. This implies that the fading just after the rebrightening maximum ( less or equal 1 week ) was caused by a slowly shrinking pseudophotosphere. Then, the NIR flux drastically increased, while the optical flux steeply declined. The optical and NIR flux was consistent with blackbody radiation with a temperature of 1500 K during this NIR rising phase. These facts are likely to be explained by dust formation in the nova ejecta. Assuming an optically thin case, we estimate the dust mass of 10^(-8) -- 10^(-10) M_solar, which is less than those in typical dust-forming novae. These results support the senario that a second, long-lasting outflow, which caused the rebrightening, interacted with a fraction of the initial outflow and formed dust grains.

Anti-Correlation of the Near-Infrared and X-Ray Variations of the Microquasar GRS 1915+105 in Soft State

We report detailed, long term near-infrared (NIR) light curves of GRS 1915+105 in 2007-2008, covering its long "soft state" for the first time. From our NIR monitoring and the X-ray data of the All Sky Monitor (ASM) onboard Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we discovered that the NIR flux dropped by > 1 mag during short X-ray flares with a time-scale of days. With the termination of the soft state, the H-Ks color reddened and the anti-correlation pattern was broken. The observed H-Ks color variation suggests that the dominant NIR source was an accretion disk during the soft state. The short X-ray flares during the soft state were associated with spectral hardening in X-rays and increasing radio emission indicating jet ejection. The temporal NIR fading during the X-ray flares, hence, implies a sudden decrease of the contribution of the accretion disk when the jet is ejected.

CCD Photometry of a Newly Confirmed SU UMa-Type Dwarf Nova, NSV 4838

We present time-resolved CCD photometry of a dwarf nova NSV 4838 (UMa 8, SDSS J102320.27+440509.8) during the 2005 June and 2007 February outburst. Both light curves showed superhumps with a mean period of 0.0699(1) days for the 2005 outburst and 0.069824(83) days for the 2007 outburst, respectively. Using its known orbital period of 0.0678 days, we estimated the mass ratio of the system to be $q$=0.13 based on an empirical relation. Although the majority of SU UMa-type dwarf novae having similar superhump periods show negative period derivatives, we found that the superhump period increased at $\dot{P}$ / $P_{\rm sh}$=+7(+3, -4)$\times10^{-5}$ during the 2007 superoutburst. We also investigated long-term light curves of NSV 4838, from which we derived 340 days as a supercycle of this system.

The 2006 November outburst of EG Aquarii: the SU UMa nature revealed

We report time-resolved CCD photometry of the cataclysmic variable EG Aquarii during the 2006 November outburst During the outburst, superhumps were unambiguously detected with a mean period of 0.078828(6) days, firstly classifying the object as an SU UMa-type dwarf nova. It also turned out that the outburst contained a precursor. At the end of the precursor, immature profiles of humps were observed. By a phase analysis of these humps, we interpreted the features as superhumps. This is the second example that the superhumps were shown during a precursor. Near the maximum stage of the outburst, we discovered an abrupt shift of the superhump period by ${\sim}$ 0.002 days. After the supermaximum, the superhump period decreased at the rate of $\dot{P}/P$=$-8.2{\times}10^{-5}$, which is typical for SU UMa-type dwarf novae. Although the outburst light curve was characteristic of SU UMa-type dwarf novae, long-term monitoring of the variable shows no outbursts over the past decade. We note on the basic properties of long period and inactive SU UMa-type dwarf novae.

Spectropolarimetric Study on Circumstellar Structure of Microquasar LS I +61deg 303

We present optical linear spectropolarimetry of the microquasar LS I +61$^{\circ}$ 303. The continuum emission is mildly polarized (up to 1.3 %) and shows almost no temporal change. We find a distinct change of polarization across the H$α$ emission line, indicating the existence of polarization component intrinsic to the microquasar. We estimate the interstellar polarization (ISP) component from polarization of the H$α$ line and derive the intrinsic polarization component. The wavelength dependence of the intrinsic component is well explained by Thomson scattering in equatorial disk of the Be-type mass donor. The position angle (PA) of the intrinsic polarization $\sim 25^{\circ}$ represents the rotational axis of the Be disk. This PA is nearly perpendicular to the PA of the radio jet found during quiescent phases. Assuming an orthogonal disk-jet geometry around the compact star, the rotational axis of the accretion disk is almost perpendicular to that of the Be disk. Moreover, according to the orbital parameters of the microquasar, the compact star is likely to get across the Be disk around their periastron passage. We discuss the peculiar circumstellar structure of this microquasar inferred from our observation and possible connection with its high-energy activities.

Dust in the Photospheric Environment II. Effect on the Near Infrared Spectra of L and T Dwarfs

We report an attempt to interpret the spectra of L and T dwarfs with the use of the Unified Cloudy Model (UCM). For this purpose, we extend the grid of the UCMs to the cases of log g = 4.5 and 5.5. The dust column density relative to the gas column density in the observable photosphere is larger at the higher gravities, and molecular line intensity is generally smaller at the higher gravities. The overall spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are f_{J} < f_{H} < f_{K} in middle and late L dwarfs, f_{J} < f_{H} > f_{K} in early T dwarfs (L/T transition objects), and finally f_{J} > f_{H} > f_{K} in middle and late T dwarfs, where f_{J}, f_{H}, and f_{K} are the peak fluxes at J, H, and K bands, respectively, in f_{nu} unit. This tendency is the opposite to what is expected for the temperature effect, but can be accounted for as the effect of thin dust clouds formed deep in the photosphere together with the effect of the gaseous opacities including H_2 (CIA), H_2O, CH_4, and K I. Although the UCMs are semi-empirical models based on a simple assumption that thin dust clouds form in the region of T_{cr} < T < T_{cond} (T_{cr} = 1800K is an only empirical parameter while T_{cond} about 2000K is fixed by the thermodynamical data), the major observations including the overall SEDs as well as the strengths of the major spectral features are consistently accounted for throughout L and T dwarfs. In view of the formidable complexities of the cloud formation, we hope that our UCM can be of some use as a guide for future modelings of the ultracool dwarfs as well as for interpretation of observed data of L and T dwarfs.

Spectral Classification and Effective Temperatures of L and T Dwarfs Based of Near-Infrared Spectra

We have obtained near-infrared spectra of L dwarfs, L/T transition objects and T dwarfs using Subaru. Resulting spectra are examined in detail to see their dependence on the spectral types. We have obtained bolometric luminosities of the objects with known parallaxes in our sample, first by integrating the spectra and second by K band bolometric correction. We derive the relation between effective temperature and spectral type.

Grain Growth in the Dark Cloud L1251

We have performed optical imaging observations of the dark cloud L1251 at multiple wavelengths, B, V, R, and I, using the 105 cm Schmidt telescope at the Kiso Observatory, Japan. The cloud has a cometary shape with a dense "head" showing star formation activity and a relatively diffuse "tail" without any signs of star formation. We derived extinction maps of A_B and A_V with a star count method, and also revealed the color excess (E_{B-V}, E_{V-R}, and E_{V-I}) distributions. On the basis of the color excess measurements we derived the distribution of the ratio of total to selective extinction R_V over the cloud using an empirical relation between R_V and A_lambda/A_V reported by Cardelli et al. In the tail of the cloud, R_V has a uniform value of ~3.2, close to that often found in the diffuse interstellar medium (~3.1), while higher values of R_V=4-6 are found in the dense head. Since R_V is closely related to the size of dust grains, the high R_V-values are most likely to represent the growth of dust grains in the dense star-forming head of the cloud.

H and K Band Methane Features in an L Dwarf, 2MASS 0920+35

We have obtained near-infrared spectra of three L dwarfs discovered by 2MASS, 1506+13 (L3), 1507-16 (L5), and 0920+35 (L6.5). From the comparison of the H and K band spectra of these L dwarfs, we have found the presence of methane absorption in 0920+35. This implies that detectable methane absorption in the H and K bands, usually considered the signature of a T dwarf, can be present in objects classified optically as late L. Methane detection in L dwarfs is consistent with the presence of a dust layer deep in the atmosphere as the unified model of Tsuji suggests.
