Electrochemical Properties and Crystal Structure of Li+ / H+ Cation-exchanged LiNiO2

LiNiO2 has high energy density but easily reacts with moisture in the atmosphere and deteriorates. We performed qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the degraded phase of LiNiO2 and the influence of the structural change on the electrochemical properties of the phase. Li1-xHxNiO2 phase with cation exchange between Li+ and H+ was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis and Karl Fischer titration measurement. As the H concentration in LiNiO2 increased, the rate capability deteriorated, especially in the low-temperature range and under low state of charge. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results suggested that this outcome was due to increased activation energy of Li+ diffusion owing to cation exchange. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction and DFT calculation confirmed that the c lattice parameter and Li-O layer reduced because of the Li+/H+ cation exchange. These results indicate that LiNiO2 modified in the atmosphere has a narrowed Li-O layer, which is the Li diffusion path, and the rate characteristics are degraded.

Inconsistencies in ab initio evaluations of non-additive contributions of DNA stacking energies

We evaluated the non-additive contributions of the inter-molecular interactions in B-DNA stacking by using diffusion Monte Carlo methods with fixed node approximations (FNDMC). For some base-pair steps, we found that their non-additive contributions evaluated by FNDMC significantly differ from those by any other {\it ab initio} methods, while there are no remarkable findings on their stacking energies themselves. The apparently unexpected results of non-additivity raise issues in both FNDMC and correlated wavefunction methods. For the latter, it can be partly attributed to the imperfect complete basis set (CBS) correction scheme due to the limitation of the computational costs. On the other hand, the striking contrast between the stacking and non-additivity behaviors was found in FNDMC. This might imply that the error cancellations of the fixed node biases in FNDMC work well for the stacking energies, while not for the non-additivity contributions involving charge transfers caused by hydrogen bonds bridging Watson-Crick base pairs.

Exploring diamond-like lattice thermal conductivity crystals via feature-based transfer learning

Ultrahigh lattice thermal conductivity materials hold great importance since they play a critical role in the thermal management of electronic and optical devices. Models using machine learning can search for materials with outstanding higher-order properties like thermal conductivity. However, the lack of sufficient data to train a model is a serious hurdle. Herein we show that big data can complement small data for accurate predictions when lower-order feature properties available in big data are selected properly and applied to transfer learning. The connection between the crystal information and thermal conductivity is directly built with a neural network by transferring descriptors acquired through a pre-trained model for the feature property. Successful transfer learning shows the ability of extrapolative prediction and reveals descriptors for lattice anharmonicity. Transfer learning is employed to screen over 60000 compounds to identify novel crystals that can serve as alternatives to diamond.

Ti interstitial flows giving rutile TiO$_2$ reoxidation process enhanced in (001) surface

We revisited ab initio evaluations of the energy barriers along the possible diffusion paths of the defects in rutile TiO$_2$. By using a method carefully considering the cancellation of the self-interaction, Ti interstitials hopping along $c$-axis are identified as the major diffusion directing to [001] surface. The conclusion is contradicting to any of previous theoretical works, and the discrepancy is explained by the overestimation of the radius of defects due to the poor cancellations in the previous works. The updated prediction here can explain the superior photocatalysis activity in [001] surface to [110].

Method for the calculation of the Hamaker constants of organic materials by the Lifshitz macroscopic approach with DFT

The Hamaker constants, which are coefficients providing quantitative information on intermolecular forces, were calculated for a number of different materials according to the Lifshitz theory via simple DFT calculations without any experimental measurements being performed. The physical properties (polarizability, dipole moment, molecular volume, and vibrational frequency) of organic molecules were calculated using the B3LYP density functional and the aug-cc-pVDZ basis set. Values for the Hamaker constants were obtained using the approximation of the Lorentz-Lorenz equation and Onsager's equation with these properties. It was found that, in the case of `non-associative' materials, like hydrocarbons, ethers, ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, esters, nitriles, and hydrosilanes, and halides, the calculated Hamaker constants were similar in value to their experimentally determined counterparts. Moreover, with this calculation method, it is easy to create the molecular model and the CPU time can be shortened.

Making the most of data: Quantum Monte Carlo Post-Analysis Revisited

In quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods, energy estimators are calculated as the statistical average of the Markov chain sampling of energy estimator along with an associated statistical error. This error estimation is not straightforward and there are several choices of the error estimation methods. We evaluate the performance of three methods, Straatsma, an autoregressive model, and a blocking analysis based on von Neumann's ratio test for randomness, for the energy time-series given by Diffusion Monte Carlo, Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo and Coupled Cluster Monte Carlo methods. From these analyses we describe a hybrid analysis method which provides reliable error estimates for series of all lengths. Equally important is the estimation of the appropriate start point of the equilibrated phase, and two heuristic schemes are tested, establishing that MSER (mean squared error rule) gives reasonable and constant estimations independent of the length of time-series.

Importance of vdW and long-range exchange interactions to DFT-predicted docking energies between plumbagin and cyclodextrins

We calculated the docking energies between plumbagin and cyclodextrins, using density functional theory (DFT) with several functionals and some semi-empirical methods. Our DFT results revealed that GD3 dispersion force correction significantly improves the reliability of prediction. Also sufficient amount of long-range exchange is important to make it reliable further, agreeing with the previous work on argon dimer. In the semi-empirical methods, PM6 and PM7 qualitatively reproduce the stabilization by docking , yet under- and over-estimating the docking energies by ~10 kcal/mol, respectively.

First-Principles Study of Structural Transition in LiNiO2 and High Throughput Screening for Long Life Battery

Herein, we performed ab initio screening to identify the best doping of LiNiO2 to achieve improved cycle performance in lithium ion batteries. The interlayer interaction that dominates the c-axis contraction and overall performance was captured well by density functional theory using van der Waals exchange-correlation functionals. The screening indicated that Nb-doping is promising for improving cycle performance. To extract qualitative reasonings, we performed data analysis in a materials informatics manner to obtain a reasonable regression to reproduce the obtained results. LASSO analysis implied that the charge density between the layers in the discharged state is the dominant factor influencing cycle performance.

Machine learning clustering technique applied to powder X-ray diffraction patterns to distinguish alloy substitutions

We applied the clustering technique using DTW (dynamic time wrapping) analysis to XRD (X-ray diffraction) spectrum patterns in order to identify the microscopic structures of substituents introduced in the main phase of magnetic alloys. The clustering is found to perform well to identify the concentrations of the substituents with successful rates (around 90%). The sufficient performance is attributed to the nature of DTW processing to filter out irrelevant informations such as the peak intensities (due to the incontrollability of diffraction conditions in polycrystalline samples) and the uniform shift of peak positions (due to the thermal expansions of lattices).

$\boldsymbol{Ab\ initio}$ search of polymer crystals with high thermal conductivity

Lattice thermal conductivities (LTC) for a subset of polymer crystals from the Polymer Genome Library were investigated to explore high LTC polymer systems. We employed a first-principles approach to evaluating phonon lifetimes within the third-order perturbation theory combined with density functional theory, and then solved the linearized Boltzmann transport equation with single-mode relaxation time approximated by the computed lifetime. Typical high LTC polymer systems, polyethylene (PE) crystal and fiber, were benchmarked, which is reasonably consistent with previous references, validating our approach. We then applied it to not only typical polymer crystals, but also some selected ones having structural similarities to PE. Among the latter crystals, we discovered that beta phase of Poly(vinylidenesurely fluoride) (PVF-$β$) crystal has higher LTC than PE at low temperature. Our detailed mode analysis revealed that the phonon lifetime of PVF-$β$ is more locally distributed around lower frequency modes and four-times larger than that of PE. It was also found from a simple data analysis that the LTC relatively correlates with curvature of energy-volume plot. The curvature would be used as a descriptor for further exploration of high LTC polymer crystals by means of a data-driven approach beyond human-based one.

Stabilization mechanism of tetragonal structure in hydrothermal synthesized BaTiO$_3$ nanocrystal

Higher OH concentration is identified in tetragonal barium titanate (BaTiO$_3$) nanorods synthesized by a hydrothermal method with 10 vol% ethylene glycol solvent [Inada, M. $et$ $al$. $Ceram.$ $Int.$ $2015$, $41$, 5581-5587]. This is apparently inconsistent with the known fact that higher OH concentration in the conventional hydrothermal synthesis makes pseudo-cubic BaTiO$_3$ nanocrystals more stable than the tetragonal one. To understand where and how the introduced OH anions are located and behave in the nanocrystals, we applied $ab$ $initio$ analysis to several possible microscopic geometries of OH locations, confirming the relative stability of the tetragonal distortion over the pseudo-cubic one due to the preference of trans-type configurations of OH anions. We also performed FTIR and XRD analysis, all being in consistent with the microscopic picture established by the $ab$ $initio$ geometrical optimizations.

Adhesion of the electrodes on diamond device surfaces

Appropriate candidates of the metallic sheet used for the electrodes of diamond semiconductor are investigated using computational approaches based on density functional theory (DFT). For twenty kinds of metallic elements $x$, we modeled a diamond-metal interface and evaluated its work of separation, $W_\mathrm{sep}(x)$, as a possible measure of anti-peeling strength. The appropriateness of the Ohmic contact was inferred from DOS (density of states) analysis of diamond-metal interface by looking at whether an in-gap (isolated/localized) peak disappears as well as a sufficient amount of DOS value exists around the Fermi level. Our DFT simulation confirmed that a typical electrode, Au, is not adhesive enough for power devices [$W_\mathrm{sep}(\mathrm{Au}) = 0.80$ J/m$^2$], though showing the Ohmic contact. In contrast, some transition metals were found to possess Ohmic features with much stronger adhesion than Au [e.g., $W_\mathrm{sep}(\mathrm{Cr}/\mathrm{Ti}) = 6.02/4.03$ J/m$^2$].

New Insight into the Ground State of FePc: A Diffusion Monte Carlo Study

We have applied DMC to evaluate relative stability of the possible electronic configurations of an isolated FePc under $D_{4h}$ symmetry, considering some fixed nodes generated from different methods. They predict $A_{2g}$ ground state consistently, supporting preceding DFT studies, with confidence overcoming the ambiguity about exchange-correlation (XC) functionals. By comparing DMC with several XC, we clarified the importance of the short range exchange to describe the relative stability. We examined why the predicted $A_{2g}$ is excluded from possible ground states in the recent ligand field based model. Simplified assumptions made in the superposition model are identified to give unreasonably less energy gain for $A_{2g}$ when compared with the reality. The state is found to have possible reasons for the stabilization, reducing the occupations from an unstable anti-bonding orbital, avoiding double occupation of a spatially localized orbital, and gaining exchange energy by putting a triplet spin pair in degenerate orbitals.

A computational scheme to evaluate Hamaker constants of molecules with practical size and anisotropy

We propose a computational scheme to evaluate Hamaker constants, $A$, of molecules with practical sizes and anisotropies. Upon the increasing feasibility of diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) methods to evaluate binding curves for such molecules to extract the constants, we discussed how to treat the averaging over anisotropy and how to correct the bias due to the non-additivity. We have developed a computational procedure for dealing with the anisotropy and reducing statistical errors and biases in DMC valuations, based on possible validations on predicted $A$. We applied the scheme to cyclohexasilane molecule, Si$_6$H$_{12}$, used in 'printed electronics' fabrications, getting $A \sim 105 \pm 2$ [zJ], being in plausible range supported even by other possible extrapolations. The scheme provided here would open a way to use handy {\it ab initio} evaluations to predict wettabilities as in the form of materials informatics over broader molecules.

Exotic phase transition and superconductivity in layered titanium-oxypnictides implied by a computational phonon analysis

We applied $ab$ $initio$ phonon analysis to layered titanium-oxypnictides, Na$_2$Ti$_2Pn_2$O ($Pn$ = As, Sb), and found a clear contrast between the cases with lighter/heavier pnictogen in comparisons with experiments. The result completely explains the experimental structure, $C$2/$m$ for $Pn$ = As, within the conventional electron-phonon framework, while there arise discrepancies when the pnictogen gets heavier, being in the same trend for the BaTi$_2Pn_2$O ($Pn$ = As, Sb, Bi) case. The fact implies a systematic dependence on pnictogen to tune the mechanism of the phase transition and superconductivity from conventional to exotic.

Phonon dispersions and Fermi surfaces nesting explaining the variety of charge ordering in titanium-oxypnictides superconductors

There has been a puzzle between experiments and theoretical predictions on the charge ordering of layered titanium-oxypnictides superconductors. Unconventional mechanisms to explain this discrepancy have been argued so far, even affecting the understanding of superconductivity on the compound. We provide a new theoretical prediction, by which the discrepancy itself is resolved without any complicated unconventional explanation. Phonon dispersions and changes of nesting vectors in Fermi surfaces are clarified to lead to the variety of superlattice structures even for the common crystal structures when without CDW, including orthorhombic $2 \times 2 \times 1$ one for BaTi$_2$As$_2$O, which has not yet been explained successfully so far, being different from tetragonal $\sqrt{2} \times \sqrt{2} \times 1$ for BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O and BaTi$_2$Bi$_2$O. The electronic structure analysis can naturally explain experimental observations about CDW including most latest ones without any cramped unconventional mechanisms.

A quantum Monte Carlo study of the ground state chromium dimer

We report variational and diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (VMC and DMC) studies of the binding curve of the ground-state chromium dimer. We employed various single determinant (SD) or multi-determinant (MD) wavefunctions multiplied by a Jastrow fuctor as a trial/guiding wavefunction. The molecular orbitals (MOs) in the SD were calculated using restricted or unrestricted Hartree-Fock or density functional theory (DFT) calculations where five commonly-used local (SVWN5), semi-local (PW91PW91 and BLYP), and hybrid (B1LYP and B3LYP) functionals were examined. The MD expansions were obtained from the complete-active space SCF, generalized valence bond, and unrestricted configuration interaction methods. We also adopted the UB3LYP-MOs to construct the MD expansion (UB3LYP-MD) and optimized their coefficients at the VMC level. In addition to the wavefunction dependence, we investigated the time-step bias in the DMC calculation and the effects of pseudopotentials and backflow transformation for the UB3LYP-SD case. Some of the VMC binding curves show a flat or quite shallow well bottom, which gets recovered deeper by DMC. All the DMC binding curves have a minimum indicating a bound state, but the comparison of atomic and molecular energies gives rise to a negative binding energy for all the DMC as well as VMC calculations.

Interpretation of Hund's multiplicity rule for the carbon atom

Hund's multiplicity rule is investigated for the carbon atom using quantum Monte Carlo methods. Our calculations give an accurate account of electronic correlation and obey the virial theorem to high accuracy. This allows us to obtain accurate values for each of the energy terms and therefore to give a convincing explanation of the mechanism by which Hund's rule operates in carbon. We find that the energy gain in the triplet with respect to the singlet state is due to the greater electron-nucleus attraction in the higher spin state, in accordance with Hartree-Fock calculations and studies including correlation. The method used here can easily be extended to heavier atoms.
