The pasta structure in the hadron-quark phase transition and the effects on magnetized compact stars

We report the effects of quark-hadron phase transition on the structures of general relativistic stars with purely toroidal magnetic field. For the mixed phase, we take into account of the finite-size effects, which lead to non-uniform "Pasta" structures. Our study is based on axisymetric and stationary formalism including purely toroidal magnetic field. For hybrid stars, we find the characteristic distribution of magnetic field, which has a discontinuity originated in the quark-hadron mixed phase. These distributions of magnetic field will change astrophysical phenomena, such as cooling processes.

Relativistic hybrid stars with super-strong toroidal magnetic fields: An evolutionary track with QCD phase transition

We investigate structures of hybrid stars, which feature quark core surrounded by a hadronic matter mantle, with super-strong toroidal magnetic fields in full general relativity. Modeling the equation of state (EOS) with a first order transition by bridging the MIT bag model for the description of quark matter and the nuclear EOS by Shen et al., we numerically construct thousands of the equilibrium configurations to study the effects of the phase transition. It is found that the appearance of the quark phase can affect distributions of the magnetic fields inside the hybrid stars, making the maximum field strength about up to 30 % larger than for the normal neutron stars. Using the equilibrium configurations, we explore the possible evolutionary paths to the formation of hybrid stars due to the spin-down of magnetized rotating neutron stars. We find that the energy release by the phase transition to the hybrid stars is quite large ($\la 10^{52} \rm erg$) even for super strongly magnetized compact stars. Our results suggest that the strong gravitational-wave emission and the sudden spin-up signature could be observable signals of the QCD phase transition, possibly for a source out to Megaparsec distances.

Longterm general relativistic simulation of binary neutron stars collapsing to a black hole

General relativistic simulations for the merger of binary neutron stars are performed as an extension of a previous work\cite{Shibata:2006nm}. We prepare binary neutron stars with a large initial orbital separation and employ the moving-puncture formulation, which enables to follow merger and ringdown phases for a long time, even after black hole formation. For modeling inspiraling neutron stars, which should be composed of cold neutron stars, the Akmal-Pandhalipande-Ravenhall (APR) equation of state (EOS) is adopted. After the onset of the merger, the hybrid-type EOS is used; i.e., the cold and thermal parts are given by the APR and $Γ$-law EOSs, respectively. Three equal-mass binaries each with mass $1.4M_\odot,1.45M_\odot,1.5M_\odot$ and two unequal-mass binaries with mass 1.3--$1.6M_\odot$, 1.35--$1.65M_\odot$ are prepared. We focus primarily on the black hole formation case, and explore mass and spin of the black hole, mass of disks which surround the black hole, and gravitational waves emitted during the black hole formation. We find that (i) for the systems of $m_0=2.9$--$3.0M_\odot$ and of mass ratio $\approx 0.8$, the mass of disks which surround the formed black hole is 0.006--$0.02M_{\odot}$; (ii) the spin of the formed black hole is $0.78 \pm 0.02$ when a black hole is formed after the merger in the dynamical time scale. This value depends weakly on the total mass and mass ratio, and is about 0.1 larger than that of a black hole formed from nonspinning binary black holes; (iii) for the black-hole formation case, Fourier spectrum shape of gravitational waves emitted in the merger and ringdown phases has a universal qualitative feature irrespective of the total mass and mass ratio, but quantitatively, the spectrum reflects the parameters of the binary neutron stars.

Relativistic stars with purely toroidal magnetic fields with realistic equations of state

We investigate equilibrium sequences of relativistic stars containing purely toroidal magnetic fields with four kinds of realistic equations of state (EOSs) of SLy (Douchin et al.), FPS (Pandharipande et al.), Shen (Shen et al.), and LS (Lattimer & Swesty). We numerically construct thousands of equilibrium configurations. Particularly we pay attention to the equilibrium sequences of constant baryon mass and/or constant magnetic flux, which model evolutions of an isolated neutron star. Important properties obtained in this study are summarized as follows ; (1) The dependence of the mass-shedding angular velocity on the EOSs is determined from that of the non-magnetized case. The stars with Shen(FPS) EOS reach the mass-shedding limit at the smallest(largest) angular velocity, while the stars with SLy or Lattimer-Swesty EOSs take the moderate values. (2) For the supramassive sequences, the equilibrium configurations are found to be generally oblate for the realistic EOSs in sharp contrast to the polytropic stars. For FPS(LS) EOS, the parameter region which permits the prolately deformed stars is widest(narrowest). For SLy and Shen EOS, it is in medium. Furthermore, the angular velocities $Ω_{\rm up}$, above which the stars start to spin up as they lose angular momentum, are found to depend sharply on the realistic EOSs. Our analysis indicates that the hierarchy of this spin up angular velocity is $Ω_{\rm up,SLy} > Ω_{\rm up,FPS} > Ω_{\rm up,LS}>Ω_{\rm up,Shen}$ and this relation holds even if the sequences have strong magnetic fields. Our results suggest the EOSs within the relativistic stars containing purely toroidal magnetic fields can be constrained by observing the angular velocity, the gravitational wave, and the signature of the spin up.

Evolution of neutron stars with toroidal magnetic fields: Axisymmetric simulation in full general relativity

We study the stability of neutron stars with toroidal magnetic fields by magnetohydrodynamic simulation in full general relativity under assumption of axial symmetry. Nonrotating and rigidly rotating neutron stars are prepared for a variety of magnetic field configuration. For modeling the neutron stars, the polytropic equation of state with the adiabatic index $Γ=2$ is used for simplicity. It is found that nonrotating neutron stars are dynamically unstable for the case that toroidal magnetic field strength varies $\propto \varpi^{2k-1}$ with $k\geq 2$ (here $\varpi$ is the cylindrical radius), whereas for $k=1$ the neutron stars are stable. After the onset of the instability, unstable modes grow approximately in the Alfvén time scale and, as a result, a convective motion is excited to change the magnetic field profile until a new state, which is stable against axisymmetric perturbation, is reached. We also find that rotation plays a role in stabilization, although the instability still sets in in the Alfvén time scale when the ratio of magnetic energy to rotational kinetic energy is larger than a critical value $\sim 0.2$. Implication for the evolution of magnetized protoneutron stars is discussed.

Relativistic stars with purely toroidal magnetic fields

We investigate the effects of the purely toroidal magnetic field on the equilibrium structures of the relativistic stars. The master equations for obtaining equilibrium solutions of relativistic rotating stars containing purely toroidal magnetic fields are derived for the first time. To solve these master equations numerically, we extend the Cook-Shapiro-Teukolsky scheme for calculating relativistic rotating stars containing no magnetic field to incorporate the effects of the purely toroidal magnetic fields. By using the numerical scheme, we then calculate a large number of the equilibrium configurations for a particular distribution of the magnetic field in order to explore the equilibrium properties. We also construct the equilibrium sequences of the constant baryon mass and/or the constant magnetic flux, which model the evolution of an isolated neutron star as it loses angular momentum via the gravitational waves. Important properties of the equilibrium configurations of the magnetized stars obtained in this study are summarized as follows ; (1) For the non-rotating stars, the matter distribution of the stars is prolately distorted due to the toroidal magnetic fields. (2) For the rapidly rotating stars, the shape of the stellar surface becomes oblate because of the centrifugal force. But, the matter distribution deep inside the star is sufficiently prolate for the mean matter distribution of the star to be prolate. (3) The stronger toroidal magnetic fields lead to the mass-shedding of the stars at the lower angular velocity. (4) For some equilibrium sequences of the constant baryon mass and magnetic flux, the stars can spin up as they lose angular momentum.

Numerical experiments of adjusted BSSN systems for controlling constraint violations

We present our numerical comparisons between the BSSN formulation widely used in numerical relativity today and its adjusted versions using constraints. We performed three testbeds: gauge-wave, linear wave, and Gowdy-wave tests, proposed by the Mexico workshop on the formulation problem of the Einstein equations. We tried three kinds of adjustments, which were previously proposed from the analysis of the constraint propagation equations, and investigated how they improve the accuracy and stability of evolutions. We observed that the signature of the proposed Lagrange multipliers are always right and the adjustments improve the convergence and stability of the simulations. When the original BSSN system already shows satisfactory good evolutions (e.g., linear wave test), the adjusted versions also coincide with those evolutions; while in some cases (e.g., gauge-wave or Gowdy-wave tests) the simulations using the adjusted systems last 10 times as long as those using the original BSSN equations. Our demonstrations imply a potential to construct a robust evolution system against constraint violations even in highly dynamical situations.

Gravitational Wave Signals from Chaotic System: A Point Mass with A Disk

We study gravitational waves from a particle moving around a system of a point mass with a disk in Newtonian gravitational theory. A particle motion in this system can be chaotic when the gravitational contribution from a surface density of a disk is comparable with that from a point mass. In such an orbit, we sometimes find that there appears a phase of the orbit in which particle motion becomes to be nearly regular (the so-called ``stagnant motion'') for a finite time interval between more strongly chaotic phases. To study how these different chaotic behaviours affect on observation of gravitational waves, we investigate a correlation of the particle motion and the waves. We find that such a difference in chaotic motions reflects on the wave forms and energy spectra. The character of the waves in the stagnant motion is quite different from that either in a regular motion or in a more strongly chaotic motion. This suggests that we may make a distinction between different chaotic behaviours of the orbit via the gravitational waves.

Equilibrium Configurations of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars with Realistic Equations of State

We investigate equilibrium sequences of magnetized rotating stars with four kinds of realistic equations of state (EOSs) of SLy (Douchin et al.), FPS (Pandharipande et al.), Shen (Shen et al.), and LS (Lattimer & Swesty). Employing the Tomimura-Eriguchi scheme to construct the equilibrium configurations. we study the basic physical properties of the sequences in the framework of Newton gravity. In addition we newly take into account a general relativistic effect to the magnetized rotating configurations. With these computations, we find that the properties of the Newtonian magnetized stars, e.g., structure of magnetic field, highly depends on the EOSs. The toroidal magnetic fields concentrate rather near the surface for Shen and LS EOSs than those for SLy and FPS EOSs. The poloidal fields are also affected by the toroidal configurations. Paying attention to the stiffness of the EOSs, we analyze this tendency in detail. In the general relativistic stars, we find that the difference due to the EOSs becomes small because all the employed EOSs become sufficiently stiff for the large maximum density, typically greater than $10^{15}\rm{g} \rm{cm}^{-3}$. The maximum baryon mass of the magnetized stars with axis ratio $q\sim 0.7$ increases about up to twenty percents for that of spherical stars. We furthermore compute equilibrium sequences at finite temperature, which should serve as an initial condition for the hydrodynamic study of newly-born magnetars. Our results suggest that we may obtain information about the EOSs from the observation of the masses of magnetars.

1/f fluctuations in spinning-particle motions around Schwarzschild black hole

We study the properties of chaos in the motions of a spinning test particle in Schwarzschild spacetime. We characterize the chaos using the power spectrum of the time series of $z$ components of the particle's position. It is found that the pattern of the power spectrum shows not only white noise but also $1/f$-type fluctuation, depending on the value of the total angular momentum $J$ and the spin $S$ of the test particle. Therefore we succeed in classifying the chaotic motions, which have been classified as simply chaotic ones in former works, into the two distinct types. One is $1/f$, and the other is white noise. Based on this classification, we plot, in the two-dimensional parameter space $(J,S)$, the phase diagram for the properties of the chaos. This phase diagram enables us in principle to guess the properties of the system $(J,S)$ by observing the dynamics of the test particle, even if the motion is chaotic. Furthermore, we detect that the origin of the $1/f$ fluctuation is that the particle motion stagnates around regular orbits (tori), while traveling back and forth between them, which is called ``stagnant motion'' or ``sticky motion'' in Hamiltonian dynamical systems. The point is that the difference of the property of the chaos or the power spectra is due to the topological structure of the phase space, which in turn is governed by the physical parameter set $(J,S)$ of the system. From this point of view, the chaos we found in this system is not always merely random.

Gravitational Waves from Chaotic Dynamical System

To investigate how chaos affects gravitational waves, we study the gravitational waves from a spinning test particle moving around a Kerr black hole, which is a typical chaotic system. To compare the result with those in non-chaotic dynamical system, we also analyze a spinless test particle, which orbit can be complicated in the Kerr back ground although the system is integrable. We estimate the emitted gravitational waves by the multipole expansion of a gravitational field. We find a striking difference in the energy spectra of the gravitational waves. The spectrum for a chaotic orbit of a spinning particle, contains various frequencies, while some characteristic frequencies appear in the case of a spinless particle.
