First measurement of $ϕ$ meson production in 30 GeV proton-nucleus reactions via di-electron decay at J-PARC

We present the first measurement of the production of the $ϕ$ meson in 30 GeV proton-nucleus interactions on carbon and copper targets via the di-electron decay channel. The measurement was conducted at the high-momentum beamline of the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility, which was commissioned in 2020. The $e^+e^-$ pairs were detected using the E16 spectrometer, during a commissioning run of the J-PARC E16 experiment. The $ϕ$ mesons are successfully reconstructed on all experimental targets. The obtained yields are converted to the total production cross section, assuming a kinematical distribution of the event generator JAM. The total cross sections derived are 2.0 $\pm$ 0.9 (stat.) $\pm$ 1.0 (syst.) mb on the carbon target and 10.3 $\pm$ 4.4 (stat.) $\pm$ 4.4 (syst.) mb on the copper target. The mass-number dependence of the cross section is discussed using the parameter $α$, defined as $σ\propto A^α$, resulting in $α= $ 0.99 $\pm$ 0.38 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.34 (syst.). The extrapolation to $A=1$, which means that the cross section of proton-proton reactions, is in good agreement with the existing measurements at comparable energies.

Glueballonia as Hopfions

We work out the Hopfion description of glueballs by inclusively comparing the energy spectra obtained by quantizing Hopfions with experimental data and lattice QCD. Identifying a Hopfion carrying a unit topological charge as $f_0(1500)$, the Hopfions with the topological charge two are classified as glueballonia, i.e., two glueballs are bound together. We find a tightly and a loosely bound glueballonia complying with $f_0 (2470)$ and a novel scalar particle carrying the mass around 2814 MeV, respectively, and calculate their binding energies. By the rigid body quantization of Hopfions, we predict a characteristic multiplet structure of tensor glueball states. Some of them are missing in the current experimental data and can be verified in future measurements.

Toward a Direct Measurement of Partial Restoration of Chiral Symmetry at J-PARC E16 via Density-induced Chiral Mixing

The degeneracy of chiral partners is an ideal signal for measuring the restoration of the spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in QCD. In this work, we investigate the observability of the $ϕ$ - $f_1(1420)$ degeneracy in the J-PARC E16 experiment, which measures di-electrons emitted from 30 GeV pA collisions. We for this purpose make use of an effective Lagrangian approach, which naturally incorporates the broken charge-conjugation symmetry in nuclear matter and the ensuing anomaly-induced mixing between vector and axial-vector mesons, to compute the spectral function relevant for the experimental measurement. The real-time dynamics of the pA collision is obtained from a transport simulation. Including experimental background and resolution effects on top of that, we find that a signal of the $ϕ$ - $f_1(1420)$ mixing can be observed around 2.5 $σ$ with the Run2 statistics planned for the J-PARC E16 experiment with an ideal mixing strength.

Estimate of virtual photon polarization due to the intense magnetic field in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC energies

We present the first numerical calculation of the virtual photon polarization and assess the feasibility of measuring the polarization via the anisotropic decay $γ^{*} \rightarrow μμ$ using the LHC-ALICE detector. In presence of intense magnetic fields generated in high-energy non-central heavy-ion collisions that exceed the critical magnetic field intensity of quantum electrodynamics (QED), prompt virtual photons are predicted to decay anisotropically into lepton pairs, which we call virtual photon polarization. Using a relativistic resistive magnetohydrodynamics model, we computed the time evolution of the magnetic field and used these results to estimate the averaged polarization by calculating the vacuum polarization under the influence of the magnetic field at specific times. The estimated polarization deviates from zero with a statistical significance of $0.07σ$ with the data statistics collected from 2010 to 2011 and $0.15σ$ with the one from 2015 to 2018. It is understandable that the magnetic field could not be detected through polarization due to low statistical significance. With the data collecting the ongoing ALICE run from 2023 to 2026, the statistics dramatically increase by the upgraded LHC and the new data processing system. Thereby we expect that the statistical significance could reach $\sim 1.7σ$, resulting in a promising probe for detecting the intense magnetic fields.

HBT signature for clustered substructures probing primordial inhomogeneity in hot and dense QCD matter

We propose a novel approach to probe primordial inhomogeneity in hot and dense matter which could be realized in non-central heavy-ion collisions. Although the Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) interferometry is commonly used to infer the system size, the cluster size should be detected if substructures emerge in space. We demonstrate that a signal peak in the HBT two-particle correlation stands at the relative momentum corresponding to the spatial scale of pseudo one-dimensional modulation. We assess detectability using the data prepared by an event generator (AMPT model) with clustering implemented in the particle distribution.

Fate of the $ρ$-$a_1$ mixing in dilepton production

We investigate the effect of chiral mixing on dilepton production by combining the in-medium spectral function in the chiral effective field theory with the state-of-the-art fluid dynamical simulations. We compare the spectral functions with different chiral symmetry restoration scenarios. We find that the scenario with proper chiral symmetry restoration that takes into account the degenerate $ρ$ and $a_1$ mesons leads to an increase of the yield in the window of $1.1<M<1.4$ GeV. Whereas, the low-temperature theorem of chiral mixing extrapolated toward a chiral crossover, often used in the literature, leads to a substantial overestimate at $M=1.2$ GeV.

Probing the QCD phase transition with chiral mixing in dilepton production

We perform a systematic study of dilepton emission in a hot QCD medium based on three different scenarios of chiral mixing, each of which yields a characteristic structure in the vector spectral function. The in-medium spectral functions are accommodated into the state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations for a relativistic viscous fluid to calculate the dilepton production rate, fully accounting for the space-time evolution of a created fireball in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We demonstrate that the low-temperature theorem of chiral mixing extrapolated toward a chiral crossover, often used in the literature, leads to critical shortcomings: the inadequacy of width broadening, and a substantial overestimate of the dilepton yield maximized around the invariant mass of $M = 1.2$ GeV. The proper prescription offers a milder yet sizable increase in the window of $1.1 < M < 1.4$ GeV as the direct signature of chiral symmetry restoration.

A numerical evaluation of vacuum polarization tensor in constant external magnetic fields

Hattori-Itakura have recently derived the full Landau-level summation form for the photon vacuum polarization tensor in constant external magnetic fields at the one-loop level. The Landau-level summation form is essential when the photon momentum exceeds the threshold of the pair creation of charged particles in a magnetic field stronger than the squared mass of the charged particle. The tensor has three different form factors depending on the tensor direction with respect to the external magnetic field. The renormalization is nontrivial because these form factors are expressed in terms of double or triple summation forms. We give a numerical UV subtraction method which can be applied to numerically evaluate the form factors in constant external magnetic fields. We numerically investigate the photon vacuum polarization tensor in the form of the Landau-level summation and estimate the systematic errors coming from truncation of the Landau-level summation in a parameter region realized in heavy ion collision experiments. We find that the error is practically controllable at an $O(10^{-2})$ level for electrons and muons in strong magnetic fields expected in heavy ion collisions in the experimentally feasible kinematic parameter regions.
