Observation of a Dirac nodal line in AlB2

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of AlB2 which is isostructural to high-temperature superconductor MgB2. Using soft-x-ray photons, we accurately determined the three-dimensional bulk band structure and found a highly anisotropic Dirac-cone band at the K point in the bulk hexagonal Brillouin zone. This band disperses downward on approaching the H point while keeping its degeneracy at the Dirac point, producing a characteristic Dirac nodal line along the KH line. We also found that the band structure of AlB2 is regarded as a heavily electron-doped version of MgB2 and is therefore well suited for fully visualizing the predicted Dirac nodal line. The present results suggest that (Al,Mg)B2 system is a promising platform for studying the interplay among Dirac nodal line, carrier doping, and possible topological superconducting properties.

A pair of Calabi-Yau manifolds from a two parameter non-Abelian gauged linear sigma model

We construct and study a two parameter gauged linear sigma model with gauge group $(U(1)^2\times O(2))/{\mathbb Z}_2$ that has a dual model with gauge group $(U(1)^2\times SO(4))/{\mathbb Z}_2$. The model has two geometric phases, three hybrid phases and one phase whose character is unknown. One of the geometric phases is strongly coupled and the other is weakly coupled, where strong versus weak is exchanged under the duality. They correspond to two Calabi-Yau manifolds with $(h^{1,1},h^{2,1})=(2,24)$ which are birationally inequivalent but are expected to be derived equivalent. A region of the discriminant locus in the space of Fayet-Iliopoulos-theta parameters supports a mixed Coulomb-confining branch which is mapped to a mixed Coulomb-Higgs branch in the dual model.

Witten Index and Wall Crossing

We compute the Witten index of one-dimensional gauged linear sigma models with at least ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetry. In the phase where the gauge group is broken to a finite group, the index is expressed as a certain residue integral. It is subject to a change as the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter is varied through the phase boundaries. The wall crossing formula is expressed as an integral at infinity of the Coulomb branch. The result is applied to many examples, including quiver quantum mechanics that is relevant for BPS states in $d=4$ ${\mathcal N}=2$ theories.

2d SCFTs from M2-branes

We consider the low-energy limit of the two-dimensional theory on k M2-branes suspended between a straight M5-brane and a curved M5-brane. We argue that it is described by an N=(2,2) supersymmetric gauge theory with no matter fields but with a non-trivial twisted superpotential, and also by an N=(2,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg model, such that the (twisted) superpotentials are determined by the shape of the M5-branes. We find particular cases realize Kazama-Suzuki models. Evidence is provided by the study of ground states, chiral rings, BPS spectra and S^2 partition functions of the systems.

Duality In Two-Dimensional (2,2) Supersymmetric Non-Abelian Gauge Theories

We study the low energy behaviour of N=(2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories in 1+1 dimensions, with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups and matters in the fundamental representation. We observe supersymmetry breaking in super-Yang-Mills theory and in theories with small numbers of flavors. For larger numbers of flavors, we discover duality between regular theories with different gauge groups and matter contents, where regularity refers to absence of quantum Coulomb branch. The result is applied to study families of superconformal field theories that can be used for superstring compactifications, with corners corresponding to three-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds. This work is motivated by recent development in mathematics concerning equivalences of derived categories.

Linear Sigma Models With Strongly Coupled Phases -- One Parameter Models

We systematically construct a class of two-dimensional $(2,2)$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models with phases in which a continuous subgroup of the gauge group is totally unbroken. We study some of their properties by employing a recently developed technique. The focus of the present work is on models with one Kähler parameter. The models include those corresponding to Calabi-Yau threefolds, extending three examples found earlier by a few more, as well as Calabi-Yau manifolds of other dimensions and non-Calabi-Yau manifolds. The construction leads to predictions of equivalences of D-brane categories, systematically extending earlier examples. There is another type of surprise. Two distinct superconformal field theories corresponding to Calabi-Yau threefolds with different Hodge numbers, $h^{2,1}=23$ versus $h^{2,1}=59$, have exactly the same quantum Kähler moduli space. The strong-weak duality plays a crucial rôle in confirming this, and also is useful in the actual computation of the metric on the moduli space.

Elliptic genera of 2d N=2 gauge theories

We compute the elliptic genera of general two-dimensional N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) gauge theories. We find that the elliptic genus is given by the sum of Jeffrey-Kirwan residues of a meromorphic form, representing the one-loop determinant of fields, on the moduli space of flat connections on T^2. We give several examples illustrating our formula, with both Abelian and non-Abelian gauge groups, and discuss some dualities for U(k) and SU(k) theories. This paper is a sequel to the authors' previous paper arXiv:1305.0533.

Elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=2 gauge theories with rank-one gauge groups

We compute the elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) gauged linear sigma models via supersymmetric localization, for rank-one gauge groups. The elliptic genus is expressed as a sum over residues of a meromorphic function whose argument is the holonomy of the gauge field along both the spatial and the temporal directions of the torus. We illustrate our formulas by a few examples including the quintic Calabi-Yau, N=(2,2) SU(2) and O(2) gauge theories coupled to N fundamental chiral multiplets, and a geometric N=(0,2) model.

Exact Results In Two-Dimensional (2,2) Supersymmetric Gauge Theories With Boundary

We compute the partition function on the hemisphere of a class of two-dimensional (2,2) supersymmetric field theories including gauged linear sigma models. The result provides a general exact formula for the central charge of the D-brane placed at the boundary. It takes the form of Mellin-Barnes integral and the question of its convergence leads to the grade restriction rule concerning branes near the phase boundaries. We find expressions in various phases including the large volume formula in which a characteristic class called the Gamma class shows up. The two sphere partition function factorizes into two hemispheres glued by inverse to the annulus. The result can also be written in a form familiar in mirror symmetry, and suggests a way to find explicit mirror correspondence between branes.

On The Structure Of The Chan-Paton Factors For D-Branes In Type II Orientifolds

We determine the structure of the Chan-Paton factors of the open strings ending on space filling D-branes in Type II orientifolds. Through the analysis, we obtain a rule concerning possible distribution of O-plane types. The result is applied to classify the topology of D-branes in terms of Fredholm operators and K-theory, deriving a proposal made earlier and extending it to more general cases. It is also applied to compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry in four-dimensions. We adapt and develop the language of category in this context, and use it to describe some decay channels.

Phases Of N=2 Theories In 1+1 Dimensions With Boundary

We study B-type D-branes in linear sigma models with Abelian gauge groups. The most important finding is the grade restriction rule. It classifies representations of the gauge group on the Chan-Paton factor, which can be used to define a family of D-branes over a region of the Kähler moduli space that connects special points of different character. As an application, we find a precise, transparent relation between D-branes in various geometric phases as well as free orbifold and Landau-Ginzburg points. The result reproduces and unifies many of the earlier mathematical results on equivalences of D-brane categories, including the McKay correspondence and Orlov's construction.

Aspects of Non-Abelian Gauge Dynamics in Two-Dimensional N=(2,2) Theories

We study various aspects of N=(2,2) supersymmetric non-Abelian gauge theories in two dimensions, with applications to string vacua. We compute the Witten index of SU(k) SQCD with N>0 flavors with twisted masses; the result is presented as the solution to a simple combinatoric problem. We further claim that the infra-red fixed point of SU(k) gauge theory with N massless flavors is non-singular if (k,N) passes a related combinatoric criterion. These results are applied to the study of a class of U(k) linear sigma models which, in one phase, reduce to sigma models on Calabi-Yau manifolds in Grassmannians. We show that there are multiple singularities in the middle of the one-dimensional Kahler moduli space, in contrast to the Abelian models. This result precisely matches the complex structure singularities of the proposed mirrors. In one specific example, we study the physics in the other phase of the Kahler moduli space and find that it reduces to a sigma model for a second Calabi-Yau manifold which is not birationally equivalent to the first. This proves a mathematical conjecture of Rodland.

D-brane Categories for Orientifolds -- The Landau-Ginzburg Case

We construct and classify categories of D-branes in orientifolds based on Landau-Ginzburg models and their orbifolds. Consistency of the worldsheet parity action on the matrix factorizations plays the key role. This provides all the requisite data for an orientifold construction after embedding in string theory. One of our main results is a computation of topological field theory correlators on unoriented worldsheets, generalizing the formulas of Vafa and Kapustin-Li for oriented worldsheets, as well as the extension of these results to orbifolds. We also find a doubling of Knoerrer periodicity in the orientifold context.

Non-perturbative orientifold transitions at the conifold

After orientifold projection, the conifold singularity in hypermultiplet moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications cannot be avoided by geometric deformations. We study the non-perturbative fate of this singularity in a local model involving O6-planes and D6-branes wrapping the deformed conifold in Type IIA string theory. We classify possible A-type orientifolds of the deformed conifold and find that they cannot all be continued to the small resolution. When passing through the singularity on the deformed side, the O-plane charge generally jumps by the class of the vanishing cycle. To decide which classical configurations are dynamically connected, we construct the quantum moduli space by lifting the orientifold to M-theory as well as by looking at the superpotential. We find a rich pattern of smooth and phase transitions depending on the total sixbrane charge. Non-BPS states from branes wrapped on non-supersymmetric bolts are responsible for a phase transition. We also clarify the nature of a Z_2 valued D0-brane charge in the 6-brane background. Along the way, we obtain a new metric of G_2 holonomy corresponding to an O6-plane on the three sphere of the deformed conifold.

F-term equations near Gepner points

We study marginal deformations of B-type D-branes in Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. The general setup of matrix factorizations allows for exact computations of F-term equations in the low-energy effective theory which are much simpler than in a corresponding geometric description. We present a number of obstructed and unobstructed examples in detail, including one in which a closed string modulus is obstructed by the presence of D-branes. In a certain example, we find a non-trivial global structure of the BRST operator on the moduli space of branes.

D-branes from Matrix Factorizations

B-type D-branes can be obtained from matrix factorizations of the Landau-Ginzburg superpotential. We here review this promising approach to learning about the spacetime superpotential of Calabi-Yau compactifications. We discuss the grading of the D-branes, and present applications in two examples: the two-dimensional torus, and the quintic.

Boundary RG Flows of N=2 Minimal Models

We study boundary renormalization group flows of N=2 minimal models using Landau-Ginzburg description of B-type. A simple algebraic relation of matrices is relevant. We determine the pattern of the flows and identify the operators that generate them. As an application, we show that the charge lattice of B-branes in the level k minimal model is Z_{k+2}. We also reproduce the fact that the charge lattice for the A-branes is Z^{k+1}, applying the B-brane analysis on the mirror LG orbifold.

Orientifolds and Mirror Symmetry

We study parity symmetries and crosscap states in classes of N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions, including non-linear sigma models, gauged WZW models, Landau-Ginzburg models, and linear sigma models. The parity anomaly and its cancellation play important roles in many of them. The case of the N=2 minimal model are studied in complete detail, from all three realizations -- gauged WZW model, abstract RCFT, and LG models. We also identify mirror pairs of orientifolds, extending the correspondence between symplectic geometry and algebraic geometry by including unorientable worldsheets. Through the analysis in various models and comparison in the overlapping regimes, we obtain a global picture of orientifolds and D-branes.
