Holographic chiral magnetic spiral

We study the ground state of baryonic/axial matter at zero temperature chiral-symmetry broken phase under a large magnetic field, in the framework of holographic QCD by Sakai-Sugimoto. Our study is motivated by a recent proposal of chiral magnetic spiral phase that has been argued to be favored against previously studied phase of homogeneous distribution of axial/baryonic currents in terms of meson super-currents dictated by triangle anomalies in QCD. Our results provide an existence proof of chiral magnetic spiral in strong coupling regime via holography, at least for large axial chemical potentials, whereas we don't find the phenomenon in the case of purely baryonic chemical potential.

Holographic Description of the Phase Diagram of a Chiral Symmetry Breaking Gauge Theory

The large N_c N=4 gauge theory with quenched N=2 quark matter in the presence of a magnetic field displays chiral symmetry breaking. We study the temperature and chemical potential dependence of this theory using its gravity dual (based on the D3/D7 brane system). With massless quarks, at zero chemical potential, the theory displays a first order thermal transition where chiral symmetry is restored and simultaneously the mesons of the theory melt. At zero temperature, these transitions with chemical potential are second order and occur at different chemical potential values. Between the three there are two tri-critical points, the positions of which we identify. At finite quark mass the second order transition for chiral symmetry becomes a cross over and there is a critical point at the end of the first order transition, while the meson melting transition remains similar to the massless quark case. We track the movement of the critical points as the mass is raised relative to the magnetic field.

Stochastic String Motion Above and Below the World Sheet Horizon

We study the stochastic motion of a relativistic trailing string in black hole AdS_5. The classical string solution develops a world-sheet horizon and we determine the associated Hawking radiation spectrum. The emitted radiation causes fluctuations on the string both above and below the world-sheet horizon. In contrast to standard black hole physics, the fluctuations below the horizon are causally connected with the boundary of AdS. We derive a bulk stochastic equation of motion for the dual string and use the AdS/CFT correspondence to determine the evolution a fast heavy quark in the strongly coupled $\N=4$ plasma. We find that the kinetic mass of the quark decreases by $ΔM=-\sqrt{γλ}T/2$ while the correlation time of world sheet fluctuations increases by $\sqrtγ$.

Nucleon-Nucleon Potential from Holography

In the holographic model of QCD, baryons are chiral solitons sourced by D4 flavor instantons in bulk of size 1/\sqrtλ with λ=g^2*N_c. Using the ADHM construction we explicit the exact two-instanton solution in bulk. We use it to construct the core NN potential to order N_c/λ. The core sources meson fields to order \sqrt{N_c/λ} which are shown to contribute to the NN interaction to order N_c/λ. In holographic QCD, the NN interaction splits into a small core and a large cloud contribution in line with meson exchange models. The core part of the interaction is repulsive in the central, spin and tensor channels for instantons in the regular gauge. The cloud part of the interaction is dominated by omega exchange in the central channel, by pion exchange in the tensor channel and by axial-vector exchange in the spin and tensor channels. Vector meson exchanges are subdominant in all channels.

Baryonic Response of Dense Holographic QCD

The response function of a homogeneous and dense hadronic system to a time-dependent (baryon) vector potential is discussed for holographic dense QCD (D4/D8 embedding) both in the confined and deconfined phases. Confined holographic QCD is an uncompressible and static baryonic insulator at large N_c and large λ, with a gapped vector spectrum and a massless pion. Deconfined holographic QCD is a diffusive conductor with restored chiral symmetry and a gapped transverse baryonic current. Similarly, dense D3/D7 is diffusive for any non-zero temperature at large N_c and large λ. At zero temperature dense D3/D7 exhibits a baryonic longitudinal visco-elastic mode with a first sound speed λ/\sqrt{3} and a small width due to a shear viscosity to baryon ratio η/n_B=\hbar/4. This mode is turned diffusive by arbitrarily small temperatures, a hallmark of holography.

Dense and Hot Holographic QCD: Finite Baryonic E Field

We investigate the response of dense and hot holographic QCD (hQCD) to a static and baryonic electric field E using the chiral model of Sakai and Sugimoto. Strong fields with E>(\sqrtλM_{KK})^2 free quark pairs, causing the confined vacuum and matter state to decay. We generalize Schwinger's QED persistence function to dense hQCD. At high temperature and density, Ohm's law is derived generalizing a recent result by Karch and O'Bannon to the chiral case.

Electromagnetic Baryon Form Factors from Holographic QCD

In the holographic model of QCD suggested by Sakai and Sugimoto, baryons are chiral solitons sourced by D4 instantons in bulk of size 1/\sqrtλ with λ=g^2N_c. We quantize the D4 instanton semiclassically using \hbar=1/(N_cλ) and non-rigid constraints on the vector mesons. The holographic baryon is a small chiral bag in the holographic direction with a Cheshire cat smile. The vector-baryon interactions occur at the core boundary of the instanton in D4. They are strong and of order 1/\sqrt{\hbar}. To order \hbar^0 the electromagnetic current is entirely encoded on the core boundary and vector-meson dominated. To this order, the electromagnetic charge radius is of order λ^0. The meson contribution to the baryon magnetic moments sums identically to the core contribution. The proton and neutron magnetic moment are tied by a model independent relation similar to the one observed in the Skyrme model.

Diffusion in an Expanding Plasma using AdS/CFT

We consider the diffusion of a non-relativistic heavy quark of fixed mass M, in a one-dimensionally expanding and strongly coupled plasma using the AdS/CFT duality. The Green's function constructed around a static string embedded in a background with a moving horizon, is identified with the noise correlation function in a Langevin approach. The (electric) noise decorrelation is of order 1/T(τ) while the velocity de-correlation is of order MD(τ)/T(τ). For MD>1, the diffusion regime is segregated and the energy loss is Langevin-like. The time dependent diffusion constant D(τ) asymptotes its adiabatic limit 2/π\sqrtλ T(τ) when τ/τ_0=(1/3η_0τ_0)^3 where η_0 is the drag coefficient at the initial proper time τ_0.

The Chiral Model of Sakai-Sugimoto at Finite Baryon Density

In the context of holographic QCD we analyze Sakai-Sugimoto's chiral model at finite baryon density and zero temperature. The baryon number density is introduced through compact D4 wrapping S^4 at the tip of D8-\bar{D8}. Each baryon acts as a chiral point-like source distributed uniformly over R^3, and leads a non-vanishing U(1)_V potential on the brane. For fixed baryon charge density n_B we analyze the bulk energy density and pressure using the canonical formalism. The baryonic matter with point like sources is always in the spontaneously broken phase of chiral symmetry, whatever the density. The point-like nature of the sources and large N_c cause the matter to be repulsive as all baryon interactions are omega mediated. Through the induced DBI action on D8-\bar{D8}, we study the effects of the fixed baryon charge density n_B on the pion and vector meson masses and couplings. Issues related to vector dominance in matter in the context of holographic QCD are also discussed.

Dense Holographic QCD in the Wigner-Seitz Approximation

We investigate cold dense matter in the context of Sakai and Sugimoto's holographic model of QCD in the Wigner-Seitz approximation. In bulk, baryons are treated as instantons on S^3\times R^1 in each Wigner-Seitz cell. In holographic QCD, Skyrmions are instanton holonomies along the conformal direction. The high density phase is identified with a crystal of holographic Skyrmions with restored chiral symmetry at about 4 Mkk^3/pi^5. As the average density goes up, it approaches to uniform distribution while the chiral condensate approaches to p-wave over a cell. The chiral symmetry is effectively restored in long wavelength limit since the chiral order parameter is averaged to be zero over a cell. The energy density in dense medium varies as n_B^{5/3}, which is the expected power for non-relativistic fermion. This shows that the Pauli exclusion effect in boundary is encoded in the Coulomb repulsion in the bulk.

Dense Hadronic Matter in Holographic QCD

We provide a method to study hadronic matter at finite density in the context of the Sakai-Sugimoto model. We introduce the baryon chemical potential through the external $U(1)_v$ in the induced (DBI plus CS) action on the D8-probe-brane, where baryons are skyrmions. Vector dominance is manifest at finite density. We derive the baryon density effect on the energy density, the dispersion relations of pion and vector mesons at large $N_c$. The energy density asymptotes to a constant at large density suggesting that dense matter at large $N_c$ freezes, with the pion velocity dropping to zero. Holographic dense matter enforces exactly the tenets of vector dominance, and screens efficiently vector mesons. At the freezing point the $ρ-ππ$ coupling vanishes with a finite rho mass of about 20% its vacuum value.

Zero Modes and the Atiyah-Singer Index in Noncommutative Instantons

We study the bosonic and fermionic zero modes in noncommutative instanton backgrounds based on the ADHM construction. In k instanton background in U(N) gauge theory, we show how to explicitly construct 4Nk (2Nk) bosonic (fermionic) zero modes in the adjoint representation and 2k (k) bosonic (fermionic) zero modes in the fundamental representation from the ADHM construction. The number of fermionic zero modes is also shown to be exactly equal to the Atiyah-Singer index of the Dirac operator in the noncommutative instanton background. We point out that (super)conformal zero modes in non-BPS instantons are affected by the noncommutativity. The role of Lorentz symmetry breaking by the noncommutativity is also briefly discussed to figure out the structure of U(1) instantons.

Noncommutative Instantons on R^2_{NC} x R^2_C

We study U(1) and U(2) noncommutative instantons on R^2_{NC} x R^2_C based on the ADHM construction. It is shown that a mild singularity in the instanton solutions for both self-dual and anti-self-dual gauge fields always disappears in gauge invariant quantities and thus physically regular solutions can be constructed even though any projected states are not involved in the ADHM construction. Furthermore the instanton number is also an integer.

Comments on Instantons on Noncommutative R^4

We study U(1) and U(2) instanton solutions on noncommutative R^4 based on the noncommutative version of ADHM equation proposed by Nekrasov and Schwarz. It is shown that the anti-self-dual gauge fields on self-dual noncommutative R^4 correctly give integer instanton numbers for all cases we consider. We also show that the completeness relation in the ADHM construction is generally satisfied even for noncommutative spaces.
