Quantum phase transitions in a pseudogap Anderson-Holstein model

We study a pseudogap Anderson-Holstein model of a magnetic impurity level that hybridizes with a conduction band whose density of states vanishes in power-law fashion at the Fermi energy, and couples, via its charge, to a nondispersive bosonic mode (e.g., an optical phonon). The model, which we treat using poor-man's scaling and the numerical renormalization group, exhibits quantum phase transitions of different types depending on the strength of the impurity-boson coupling. For weak impurity-boson coupling, the suppression of the density of states near the Fermi energy leads to quantum phase transitions between strong-coupling (Kondo) and local-moment phases. For sufficiently strong impurity-boson coupling, however, the bare repulsion between a pair of electrons in the impurity level becomes an effective attraction, leading to quantum phase transitions between strong-coupling (charge-Kondo) and local-charge phases. Even though the Hamiltonian exhibits different symmetries in the spin and charge sectors, the thermodynamic properties near the two types of quantum phase transition are closely related under spin-charge interchange. Moreover, the critical responses to a local magnetic field (for small impurity-boson coupling) and to an electric potential (for large impurity-boson coupling) are characterized by the same exponents, whose values place these quantum critical points in the universality class of the pseudogap Anderson model. One specific case of the pseudogap Anderson-Holstein model may be realized in a double-quantum-dot device, where the quantum phase transitions manifest themselves in the finite-temperature linear electrical conductance.

Quantum criticality in the two-channel pseudogap Anderson model: A test of the non-crossing approximation

We investigate the dynamical properties of the two-channel Anderson model using the noncrossing approximation (NCA) supplemented by numerical renormalization-group calculations. We provide evidence supporting the conventional wisdom that the NCA gives reliable results for the standard two-channel Anderson model of a magnetic impurity in a metal. We extend the analysis to the pseudogap two-channel model describing a semi-metallic host with a density of states that vanishes in power-law fashion at the Fermi energy. This model exhibits continuous quantum phase transitions between weak- and strong-coupling phases. The NCA is shown to reproduce the correct qualitative features of the pseudogap model, including the phase diagram, and to yield critical exponents in excellent agreement with the NRG and exact results. The forms of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility and impurity Green's function at the fixed points are suggestive of frequency-over-temperature scaling.

Kondo destruction and valence fluctuations in an Anderson model

Unconventional quantum criticality in heavy-fermion systems has been extensively analyzed in terms of a critical destruction of the Kondo effect. Motivated by a recent demonstration of quantum criticality in a mixed-valent heavy-fermion system, β-YbAlB4, we study a particle-hole-asymmetric Anderson impurity model with a pseudogapped density of states. We demonstrate Kondo destruction at a mixed-valent quantum critical point, where a collapsing Kondo energy scale is accompanied by a singular charge-fluctuation spectrum. Both spin and charge responses scale with energy over temperature (ω/T) and magnetic field over temperature (H/T). Implications for unconventional quantum criticality in mixed-valence heavy fermions are discussed.

Signatures of quantum phase transitions in parallel quantum dots: Crossover from local-moment to underscreened spin-1 Kondo physics

We study a strongly interacting "quantum dot 1" and a weakly interacting "dot 2" connected in parallel to metallic leads. Gate voltages can drive the system between Kondo-quenched and non-Kondo free-moment phases separated by Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transitions. Away from the immediate vicinity of the quantum phase transitions, the physical properties retain signatures of first-order transitions found previously to arise when dot 2 is strictly noninteracting. As interactions in dot 2 become stronger relative to the dot-lead coupling, the free moment in the non-Kondo phase evolves smoothly from an isolated spin-one-half in dot 1 to a many-body doublet arising from the incomplete Kondo compensation by the leads of a combined dot spin-one. These limits, which feature very different spin correlations between dot and lead electrons, can be distinguished by weak-bias conductance measurements performed at finite temperatures.

Quantum criticality of the sub-ohmic spin-boson model

We revisit the critical behavior of the sub-ohmic spin-boson model. Analysis of both the leading and subleading terms in the temperature dependence of the inverse static local spin susceptibility at the quantum critical point, calculated using a numerical renormalization-group method, provides evidence that the quantum critical point is interacting in cases where the quantum-to-classical mapping would predict mean-field behavior. The subleading term is shown to be consistent with an w/T scaling of the local dynamical susceptibility, as is the leading term. The frequency and temperature dependences of the local spin susceptibility in the strong-coupling (delocalized) regime are also presented. We attribute the violation of the quantum-to-classical mapping to a Berry-phase term in a continuum path-integral representation of the model. This effect connects the behavior discussed here with its counterparts in models with continuous spin symmetry.

Quantum phase transitions in a charge-coupled Bose-Fermi Anderson model

We study the competition between Kondo physics and dissipation within an Anderson model of a magnetic impurity level that hybridizes with a metallic host and is also coupled, via the impurity charge, to the displacement of a bosonic bath having a spectral density proportional to ω^s. As the impurity-bath coupling increases from zero, the effective Coulomb interaction between two electrons in the impurity level is progressively renormalized from its repulsive bare value until it eventually becomes attractive. For weak hybridization, this renormalization in turn produces a crossover from a conventional, spin-sector Kondo effect to a charge Kondo effect. At particle-hole symmetry, and for sub-Ohmic bath exponents 0 < s < 1, further increase of the impurity-bath coupling results in a continuous, zero-temperature transition to a broken-symmetry phase in which the ground-state impurity occupancy \n_d acquires an expectation value <\n_d>_0 \ne 1. The response of the impurity occupancy to a locally applied electric potential features the hyperscaling of critical exponents and ω/T scaling that are expected at an interacting critical point. The numerical values of the critical exponents suggest that the transition lies in the same universality class as that of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model. For the Ohmic case s = 1, the transition is instead of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Away from particle-hole symmetry, the quantum phase transition is replaced by a smooth crossover, but signatures of the symmetric quantum critical point remain in the physical properties at elevated temperatures and/or frequencies.

Tunable pseudogap Kondo effect and quantum phase transitions in Aharonov-Bohm interferometers

We study two quantum dots embedded in the arms of an Aharonov-Bohm ring threaded by a magnetic flux. The system can be described by an effective one-impurity Anderson model with an energy- and flux-dependent density of states. For specific values of the flux, this density of states vanishes at the Fermi energy, yielding a controlled realization of the pseudogap Kondo effect. The conductance and transmission phase shifts reflect a nontrivial interplay between wave interference and interactions, providing clear signatures of quantum phase transitions between Kondo and non-Kondo ground states.

Finite Size Scaling of Classical Long-Ranged Ising Chains and the Criticality of Dissipative Quantum Impurity Models

Motivated in part by quantum criticality in dissipative Kondo systems, we revisit the finite-size scaling of a classical Ising chain with 1/r^{2-epsilon} interactions. For 1/2<epsilon<1, the scaling of the dynamical spin susceptibility is sensitive to the degree of "winding" of the interaction under periodic boundary conditions. Infinite winding yields the expected mean-field behavior, whereas without any winding the scaling is of an interacting omega/T form. The contrast with the behavior of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model suggests a breakdown of a mapping from the quantum model to a classical one due to the smearing of the Kondo spin flips by the continuum limit taken in this mapping.

Finite-temperature conductance signatures of quantum criticality in double quantum dots

We study the linear conductance through a double-quantum-dot system consisting of an interacting dot in its Kondo regime and an effectively noninteracting dot, connected in parallel to metallic leads. Signatures in the zero-bias conductance at temperatures $T>0$ mark a pair of quantum (T=0) phase transitions between a Kondo-screened many-body ground state and non-Kondo ground states. Notably, the conductance features become more prominent with increasing $T$, which enhances the experimental prospects for accessing the quantum-critical region through tuning of gate voltages in a single device.

Magnetic quantum phase transition in an anisotropic Kondo lattice

The quantum phase transition between paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases of the Kondo lattice model with Ising anisotropy in the intersite exchange is studied within the framework of extended dynamical mean-field theory. Nonperturbative numerical solutions at zero temperature point to a continuous transition for both two- and three-dimensional magnetism. In the former case, the transition is associated with critical local physics, characterized by a vanishing Kondo scale and by an anomalous exponent in the dynamics close in value to that measured in heavy-fermion CeCu_{5.9}Au_{0.1}.

Transmission in double quantum dots in the Kondo regime: Quantum-critical transitions and interference effects

We study the transmission through a double quantum-dot system in the Kondo regime. An exact expression for the transmission coefficient in terms of fully interacting many-body Green's functions is obtained. By mapping the system into an effective Anderson impurity model, one can determine the transmission using numerical renormalization-group methods. The transmission exhibits signatures of the different Kondo regimes of the effective model, including an unusual Kondo phase with split peaks in the spectral function, as well as a pseudogapped regime exhibiting a quantum critical transition between Kondo and unscreened phases.

Quantum phase transitions in a resonant-level model with dissipation: Renormalization-group studies

We study a spinless level that hybridizes with a fermionic band and is also coupled via its charge to a dissipative bosonic bath. We consider the general case of a power-law hybridization function $Γ(\w)\propto |\w|^r$ with $r\ge 0$, and a bosonic bath spectral function $B(\w)\propto \w^s$ with $s\ge -1$. For $r<1$ and $\mathrm{max}(0,2r-1)<s<1$, this Bose-Fermi quantum impurity model features a continuous zero-temperature transition between a delocalized phase, with tunneling between the impurity level and the band, and a localized phase, in which dissipation suppresses tunneling in the low-energy limit. The phase diagram and the critical behavior of the model are elucidated using perturbative and numerical renormalization-group techniques, between which there is excellent agreement in the appropriate regimes. For $r=0$ this model's critical properties coincide with those of the spin-boson and Ising Bose-Fermi Kondo models, as expected from bosonization.

Kondo physics and dissipation: A numerical renormalization-group approach to Bose-Fermi Kondo models

We extend the numerical renormalization-group method to treat Bose-Fermi Kondo models (BFKMs) describing a local moment coupled both to a conduction band and to a dissipative bosonic bath representing, e.g., lattice or spin collective excitations of the environment. We apply the method to the Ising-symmetry BFKM with a structureless band and a bath spectral function η(ω)\propto ω^s. The method is valid for all bath exponents s and all temperatures T. For 0<s<1, the range of interest in the context of heavy-fermion quantum criticality, an interacting critical point, characterized by hyperscaling of exponents and ω/T-scaling, describes a continuous quantum phase transition between Kondo-screened and localized phases. For Ohmic dissipation s=1, where the model is relevant to certain dissipative mesoscopic qubit devices, the transition is found to be Kosterlitz-Thouless-like. In both regimes the impurity spectral function for the corresponding Anderson model shows clearly the collapse of the Kondo resonance at the transition. Connection is made to other recent results for the BFKM and the spin-boson model.

Zero-field Kondo splitting and quantum-critical transition in double quantum dots

Double quantum dots offer unique possibilities for the study of many-body correlations. A system containing one Kondo dot and one effectively noninteracting dot maps onto a single-impurity Anderson model with a structured (nonconstant) density of states. Numerical renormalization-group calculations show that while band filtering through the resonant dot splits the Kondo resonance, the singlet ground state is robust. The system can also be continuously tuned to create a pseudogapped density of states and access a quantum critical point separating Kondo and non-Kondo phases.

Kondo screening in a magnetically frustrated nanostructure: Exact results on a stable, non-Fermi-liquid phase

Triangular symmetry stabilizes a novel non-Fermi-liquid phase in the three-impurity Kondo model with frustrating antiferromagnetic interactions between half-integer impurity spins. The phase arises without fine-tuning of couplings, and is stable against magnetic fields and particle-hole symmetry breaking. We find a conformal field theory describing this phase, verify it using the numerical renormalization group, and extract various exact, universal low-energy properties. Signatures predicted in electrical transport may be testable in scanning tunneling microscopy or quantum-dot experiments.

Numerical renormalization-group study of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model

We extend the numerical renormalization-group method to Bose-Fermi Kondo models (BFKMs), describing a local moment coupled to a conduction band and a dissipative bosonic bath. We apply the method to the Ising-symmetry BFKM with a bosonic bath spectral function $η(ω)\propto ω^s$, of interest in connection with heavy-fermion criticality. For $0<s<1$, an interacting critical point, characterized by hyperscaling of exponents and $ω/T$-scaling, describes a quantum phase transition between Kondo-screened and localized phases. Connection is made to other results for the BFKM and the spin-boson model.

Local fluctuations in quantum critical metals

We show that spatially local, yet low-energy, fluctuations can play an essential role in the physics of strongly correlated electron systems tuned to a quantum critical point. A detailed microscopic analysis of the Kondo lattice model is carried out within an extended dynamical mean-field approach. The correlation functions for the lattice model are calculated through a self-consistent Bose-Fermi Kondo problem, in which a local moment is coupled both to a fermionic bath and to a bosonic bath (a fluctuating magnetic field). A renormalization-group treatment of this impurity problem--perturbative in $ε=1-γ$, where $γ$ is an exponent characterizing the spectrum of the bosonic bath--shows that competition between the two couplings can drive the local-moment fluctuations critical. As a result, two distinct types of quantum critical point emerge in the Kondo lattice, one being of the usual spin-density-wave type, the other ``locally critical.'' Near the locally critical point, the dynamical spin susceptibility exhibits $ω/T$ scaling with a fractional exponent. While the spin-density-wave critical point is Gaussian, the locally critical point is an interacting fixed point at which long-wavelength and spatially local critical modes coexist. A Ginzburg-Landau description for the locally critical point is discussed. It is argued that these results are robust, that local criticality provides a natural description of the quantum critical behavior seen in a number of heavy-fermion metals, and that this picture may also be relevant to other strongly correlated metals.

Critical local-moment fluctuations, anomalous exponents, and omega/T scaling in the Kondo problem with a pseudogap

Experiments in heavy-fermion metals and related theoretical work suggest that critical local-moment fluctuations can play an important role near a zero-temperature phase transition. We study such fluctuations at the quantum critical point of a Kondo impurity model in which the density of band states vanishes as |E|^r at the Fermi energy (E = 0). The local spin response is described by a set of critical exponents that vary continuously with r. For 0 < r < 1, the dynamical susceptibility exhibits omega/T scaling with a fractional exponent, implying that the critical point is interacting.
