Topological $R$PdBi half-Heusler semimetals: a new family of non-centrosymmetric magnetic superconductors

We report superconductivity and magnetism in a new family of topological semimetals, the ternary half Heusler compounds $R$PdBi ($R$ : rare earth). In this series, tuning of the rare earth $f$-electron component allows for simultaneous control of both lattice density via lanthanide contraction, as well as the strength of magnetic interaction via de Gennes scaling, allowing for a unique tuning of both the normal state band inversion strength, superconducting pairing and magnetically ordered ground states. Antiferromagnetism with ordering vector (0.5,0.5,0.5) occurs below a Neéel temperature that scales with de Gennes factor $dG$, while a superconducting transition is simultaneously linearly suppressed. With superconductivity appearing in a system with non-centrosymmetric crystallographic symmetry, the possibility of spin-triplet Cooper pairing with non-trivial topology analogous to that predicted for the normal state electronic structure provides a unique and rich opportunity to realize both predicted and new exotic excitations in topological materials.

Universal pair-breaking in transition metal-substituted iron-pnictide superconductors

The experimental transport scattering rate was determined for a wide range of optimally doped transition metal-substituted FeAs-based compounds with the ThCr2Si2 (122) crystal structure. The maximum transition temperature Tc for several Ba-, Sr-, and Ca-based 122 systems follows a universal rate of suppression with increasing scattering rate indicative of a common pair-breaking mechanism. Extraction of standard pair-breaking parameters puts a limit of \sim26 K on the maximum Tc for all transition metal-substituted 122 systems, in agreement with experimental observations, and sets a critical scattering rate of 1.5x10^14 s^-1 for the suppression of the superconducting phase. The observed critical scattering rate is much weaker than that expected for a sign-changing order parameter, providing important constraints on the nature of the superconducting gap in the 122 family of iron-based superconductors.

Surface conduction of topological Dirac electrons in bulk insulating Bi2Se3

The newly-discovered three-dimensional strong topological insulators (STIs) exhibit topologically-protected Dirac surface states. While the STI surface state has been studied spectroscopically by e.g. photoemission and scanned probes, transport experiments have failed to demonstrate the most fundamental signature of the STI: ambipolar metallic electronic transport in the topological surface of an insulating bulk. Here we show that the surfaces of thin (<10 nm), low-doped Bi2Se3 (\approx10^17/cm3) crystals are strongly electrostatically coupled, and a gate electrode can completely remove bulk charge carriers and bring both surfaces through the Dirac point simultaneously. We observe clear surface band conduction with linear Hall resistivity and well-defined ambipolar field effect, as well as a charge-inhomogeneous minimum conductivity region. A theory of charge disorder in a Dirac band explains well both the magnitude and the variation with disorder strength of the minimum conductivity (2 to 5 e^2/h per surface) and the residual (puddle) carrier density (0.4 x 10^12 cm^-2 to 4 x 10^12 cm^-2). From the measured carrier mobilities 320 cm^2/Vs to 1,500 cm^2/Vs, the charged impurity densities 0.5 x 10^13 cm^-2 to 2.3 x 10^13 cm^-2 are inferred. They are of a similar magnitude to the measured doping levels at zero gate voltage (1 x 10^13 cm^-2 to 3 x 10^13 cm^-2), identifying dopants as the charged impurities.

Superconductivity in the topological semimetal YPtBi

The noncentrosymmetric Half Heusler compound YPtBi exhibits superconductivity below a critical temperature T_c = 0.77 K with a zero-temperature upper critical field H_c2(0) = 1.5 T. Magnetoresistance and Hall measurements support theoretical predictions that this material is a topologically nontrivial semimetal having a surprisingly low positive charge carrier density of 2 x 10^18 cm^-3. Unconventional linear magnetoresistance and beating in Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations point to spin-orbit split Fermi surfaces. The sensitivity of magnetoresistance to surface roughness suggests a possible contribution from surface states. The combination of noncentrosymmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling in YPtBi presents a promising platform for the investigation of topological superconductivity.

Nitrogen Contamination in Elastic Neutron Scattering

Nitrogen gas accidentally sealed in a sample container produces various spurious effects in elastic neutron scattering measurements. These effects are systematically investigated and the details of the spurious scattering are presented.

Annealing effects on superconductivity in SrFe2-xNixAs2

Superconductivity has been explored in single crystals of the Ni-doped FeAs-compound SrFe2-xNixAs2 grown by self-flux solution method. The antiferromagnetic order associated with the magnetostructural transition of the parent compound SrFe2As2 is gradually suppressed with increasing Ni concentration x and bulk-phase superconductivity with full diamagnetic screening is induced near the optimal doping of x = 0.15 with a maximum transition temperature Tc ~9.8 K. An investigation of high-temperature annealing on as-grown samples indicate that the heat treatment can enhance Tc as much as ~50 %.

Superconductivity and magnetism in platinum-substituted SrFe2As2 single crystals

Single crystals of SrFe2-xPtxAs2 (0 < x < 0.36) were grown using the self flux solution method and characterized using x-ray crystallography, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. The magnetic/structural transition is suppressed with increasing Pt concentration, with superconductivity seen over the range 0.08 < x < 0.36 with a maximum transition temperature Tc of 16 K at x = 0.16. The shape of the phase diagram and the changes to the lattice parameters are similar to the effects of other group VIII elements Ni and Pd, however the higher transition temperature and extended range of superconductivity suggest some complexity beyond the simple electron counting picture that has been discussed thus far.

Evidence of a universal and isotropic 2Δ/kBTC ratio in 122-type iron pnictide superconductors over a wide doping range

We have systematically investigated the doping and the directional dependence of the gap structure in the 122-type iron pnictide superconductors by point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The studies were performed on single crystals of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.29, 0.49, and 0.77) and SrFe1.74Co0.26As2 with a sharp tip of Pb or Au pressed along the c-axis or the ab-plane direction. The conductance spectra obtained on highly transparent contacts clearly show evidence of a robust superconducting gap. The normalized curves can be well described by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with a lifetime broadening. The determined gap value scales very well with the transition temperature, giving the 2Δ/kBTC value of ~ 3.1. The results suggest the presence of a universal coupling behavior in this class of iron pnictides over a broad doping range and independent of the sign of the doping. Moreover, conductance spectra obtained on c-axis junctions and ab-plane junctions indicate that the observed gap is isotropic in these superconductors.

Uniform chemical pressure effect in solid solutions Ba(1-x)Sr(x)Fe2As2 and Sr(1-x)Ca(x)Fe2As2

The effect of alkaline earth substitution on structural parameters was studied in high-quality single crystals of Ba(1-x)Sr(x)Fe2As2 and Sr(1-x)Ca(x)Fe2As2 grown by the self-flux method. The results of single-crystal and powder x-ray diffraction measurements suggest a continuous monotonic decrease of both a- and c-axis lattice parameters, the c/a tetragonal ratio, and the unit cell volume with decreasing alkaline earth atomic radius as expected by Vegard's law. As a result, the system experiences a continuously increasing chemical pressure effect in traversing the phase diagram from x=0 in Ba(1-x)Sr(x)Fe2As2 to x=1 in Sr(1-x)Ca(x)Fe2As2.

Strong surface scattering in ultrahigh mobility Bi2Se3 topological insulator crystals

While evidence of a topologically nontrivial surface state has been identified in surface-sensitive measurements of Bi2Se3, a significant experimental concern is that no signatures have been observed in bulk transport. In a search for such states, nominally undoped single crystals of Bi2Se3 with carrier densities approaching 10^16 cm^-3 and very high mobilities exceeding 2 m^2 V^-1 s^-1 have been studied. A comprehensive analysis of Shubnikov de Haas oscillations, Hall effect, and optical reflectivity indicates that the measured electrical transport can be attributed solely to bulk states, even at 50 mK at low Landau level filling factor, and in the quantum limit. The absence of a significant surface contribution to bulk conduction demonstrates that even in very clean samples, the surface mobility is lower than that of the bulk, despite its topological protection.

Josephson effect between electron-doped and hole-doped iron pnictide single crystals

We have observed the Josephson effect in junctions formed between single crystals of SrFe1.74Co0.26As2 and Ba0.23K0.77Fe2As2. I-V curves showed resistively-shunted junction characteristics, and the ac Josephson effect was observed under microwave irradiation. By applying an in-plane magnetic field, the critical current is completely modulated and shows a relatively symmetric diffraction pattern, consistent with the intermediate junction limit. The observation of the Josephson effect in the p-n bicrystal structure not only has significant implications for designing phase-sensitive junctions to probe the pairing symmetry of iron pnictide superconductors, but also represents an important step in developing all iron pnictide devices for applications.
