Ab initio Molecular Dynamics Study of Glycine Intramolecular Proton Transfer in Water

We use ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to quantify structural and thermodynamic properties of a model proton transfer reaction that converts a neutral glycine molecule, stable in the gas phase, to the zwitterion that predominates in aqueous solution. We compute the potential of mean force associated with the direct intramolecular proton transfer event in glycine. Structural analyses show that the average hydration number Nw of glycine is not constant along the reaction coordinate, but rather progresses from Nw=5 in the neutral molecule to Nw=8 for the zwitterion. We report the free energy difference between the neutral and charged glycine molecules, and the free energy barrier to proton transfer. Finally, we identify approximations inherent in our method and estimate corresponding corrections to our reported thermodynamic predictions.

Atomistic simulations of the incipient ferroelectric KTaO$_3$

A parameterized effective Hamiltonian approach is used to investigate KTaO$_3$. We find that the experimentally observed anomalous dielectric response of this incipient ferroelectric is well reproduced by this approach, once quantum effects are accounted for. Quantum fluctuations suppress the paraelectric--to--ferroelectric phase transition; it is unnecessary to introduce defects to explain the dielectric behavior. The resulting quantum-induced local structure exhibits off-center atomic displacements that display {\sl longitudinal, needle-like correlations} extending a few lattice constants.

Dynamical simulation of transport in one-dimensional quantum wires

Transport of single-channel spinless interacting fermions (Luttinger liquid) through a barrier has been studied by numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo methods. A novel stochastic integration over the real-time paths allows for direct computation of nonequilibrium conductance and noise properties. We have examined the low-temperature scaling of the conductance in the crossover region between a very weak and an almost insulating barrier.
