Shape Optimization of Actuators over Banach Spaces for Nonlinear Systems

In this paper, optimal actuator shape for nonlinear parabolic systems is discussed. The system under study is an abstract differential equation with a locally Lipschitz nonlinear part. A quadratic cost on the state and input of the system is considered. The existence of an optimal actuator shape has been established in the literature. This paper focuses on driving the optimality conditions for actuator shapes belonging to a Banach space. The application of the theory to the optimal actuator shape design for railway track model is considered.

A simplified derivation technique of topological derivatives for quasi-linear transmission problems

In this paper we perform the rigorous derivation of the topological derivative for optimization problems constrained by a class of quasi-linear elliptic transmission problems. In the case of quasi-linear constraints, techniques using fundamental solutions of the differential operators cannot be applied to show convergence of the variation of the states. Some authors succeeded showing this convergence with the help of technical computations under additional requirements on the problem. Our main objective is to simplify and extend these previous results by using a Lagrangian framework and a projection trick. Besides these generalisations the purpose of this manuscript is to present a systematic derivation approach for topological derivatives.

Asymptotic analysis and topological derivative for 3D quasi-linear magnetostatics

In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of the quasilinear $curl$-$curl$ equation of 3D magnetostatics with respect to a singular perturbation of the differential operator and prove the existence of the topological derivative using a Lagrangian approach. We follow the strategy proposed in our recent previous work (arXiv:1907.13420) where a systematic and concise way for the derivation of topological derivatives for quasi-linear elliptic problems in $H^1$ is introduced. In order to prove the asymptotics for the state equation we make use of an appropriate Helmholtz decomposition. The evaluation of the topological derivative at any spatial point requires the solution of a nonlinear transmission problem. We discuss an efficient way for the numerical evaluation of the topological derivative in the whole design domain using precomputation in an offline stage. This allows us to use the topological derivative for the design optimization of an electrical machine.

Optimal actuator design for vibration control based on LQR performance and shape calculus

Optimal actuator design for a vibration control problem is calculated. The actuator shape is optimized according to the closed-loop performance of the resulting linear-quadratic regulator and a penalty on the actuator size. The optimal actuator shape is found by means of shape calculus and a topological derivative of the linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) performance index. An abstract framework is proposed based on the theory for infinite-dimensional optimization of both the actuator shape and the associated control problem. A numerical realization of the optimality condition is presented for the actuator shape using a level-set method for topological derivatives. A Numerical example illustrating the design of actuator for Euler-Bernoulli beam model is provided.

Convergence of Newton's method in shape optimisation via approximate normal functions

In this paper we propose a Newton method for shape functions defined on an image set generated by the (Micheletti) metric group. We review basic properties of the metric group and a quotient associated with the metric group and a fixed domain. Taking into account the special structure of the second shape derivative and its symmetric part allows us to distinguish between two Hessians, the domain shape Hessian and the boundary shape Hessian. Using the domain Hessian we define a Newton method on the metric group by discretising the tangent space of the quotient via approximate normal functions using reproducing kernels. Under suitable assumptions we are able to show superlinear convergences of the Newton iterations and additionally convergence of the shapes in the metric group. Finally we verify our findings in a number of numerical experiments including a thorough numerical study of the impact of the discretisation on the convergence speed.

On the explicit feedback stabilisation of 1D linear nonautonomous parabolic equations via oblique projections

In recently proposed stabilisation techniques for parabolic equations, a crucial role is played by a suitable sequence of oblique projections in Hilbert spaces, onto the linear span of a suitable set of M actuators, and along the subspace orthogonal to the space spanned by the first M eigenfunctions of the Laplacian operator. This new approach uses an explicit feedback law, which is stabilising provided that the sequence of operator norms of such oblique projections remains bounded. The main result of the paper is the proof that, for suitable explicitly given sequences of sets of actuators, the operator norm of the corresponding oblique projections remains bounded. In the final part of the paper we provide numerical results, showing the performance of the explicit feedback control for both Dirichlet and Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions.

Weakly-normal basis vector fields in RKHS with an application to shape Newton methods

We construct a space of vector fields that are normal to differentiable curves in the plane. Its basis functions are defined via saddle point variational problems in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs). First, we study the properties of these basis vector fields and show how to approximate them. Then, we employ this basis to discretise shape Newton methods and investigate the impact of this discretisation on convergence rates.

Topological sensitivities via a Lagrangian approach for semi-linear problems

In this paper we present a methodology that allows the efficient computation of the topological derivative for semilinear elliptic problems within the averaged adjoint Lagrangian framework. The generality of our approach should also allow the extension to evolutionary problems and other nonlinear problems. Our strategy relies on a rescaled differential quotient of the averaged adjoint state variable which we show converges weakly to a function satisfying an equation defined in the whole space. A unique feature and advantage of this framework is that we only need to work with weakly converging subsequences of the differential quotient. This allows the computation of the topological sensitivity within a simple functional analytic framework under mild assumptions.

Shape optimisation with nearly conformal transformations

In shape optimisation it is desirable to obtain deformations of a given mesh without negative impact on the mesh quality. We propose a new algorithm using least square formulations of the Cauchy-Riemann equations. Our method allows to deform meshes in a nearly conformal way and thus approximately preserves the angles of triangles during the optimisation process. The performance of our methodology is shown by applying our method to some unconstrained shape functions and a constrained Stokes shape optimisation problem.

Shape optimisation for a class of semilinear variational inequalities with applications to damage models

The present contribution investigates shape optimisation problems for a class of semilinear elliptic variational inequalities with Neumann boundary conditions. Sensitivity estimates and material derivatives are firstly derived in an abstract operator setting where the operators are defined on polyhedral subsets of reflexive Banach spaces. The results are then refined for variational inequalities arising from minimisation problems for certain convex energy functionals considered over upper obstacle sets in $H^1$. One particularity is that we allow for dynamic obstacle functions which may arise from another optimisation problems. We prove a strong convergence property for the material derivative and establish state-shape derivatives under regularity assumptions. Finally, as a concrete application from continuum mechanics, we show how the dynamic obstacle case can be used to treat shape optimisation problems for time-discretised brittle damage models for elastic solids. We derive a necessary optimality system for optimal shapes whose state variables approximate desired damage patterns and/or displacement fields.

Reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and variable metric algorithms in PDE constrained shape optimisation

In this paper we investigate and compare different gradient algorithms designed for the domain expression of the shape derivative. Our main focus is to examine the usefulness of kernel reproducing Hilbert spaces for PDE constrained shape optimisation problems. We show that radial kernels provide convenient formulas for the shape gradient that can be efficiently used in numerical simulations. The shape gradients associated with radial kernels depend on a so called smoothing parameter that allows a smoothness adjustment of the shape during the optimisation process. Besides, this smoothing parameter can be used to modify the movement of the shape. The theoretical findings are verified in a number of numerical experiments.

Shape optimisation with nonsmooth cost functions: from theory to numerics

This paper is concerned with the study of a class of nonsmooth cost functions subject to a quasi-linear PDE in Lipschitz domains in dimension two. We derive the Eulerian semi-derivative of the cost function by employing the averaged adjoint approach and maximal elliptic regularity. Furthermore we characterise stationary points and show how to compute steepest descent direc- tions theoretically and practically. Finally, we present some numerical results for a simple toy problem and compare them with the smooth case. We also compare the convergence rates and obtain higher rates in the nonsmooth case.

Distributed shape derivative via averaged adjoint method and applications

The structure theorem of Hadamard-Zolésio states that the derivative of a shape functional is a distribution on the boundary of the domain depending only on the normal perturbations of a smooth enough boundary. Actually the domain representation, also known as distributed shape derivative, is more general than the boundary expression as it is well-defined for shapes having a lower regularity. It is customary in the shape optimization literature to assume regularity of the domains and use the boundary expression of the shape derivative for numerical algorithms. In this paper we describe several advantages of the distributed shape derivative in terms of generality, easiness of computation and numerical implementation. We identify a tensor representation of the distributed shape derivative, study its properties and show how it allows to recover the boundary expression directly. We use a novel Lagrangian approach, which is applicable to a large class of shape optimization problems, to compute the distributed shape derivative. We also apply the technique to retrieve the distributed shape derivative for electrical impedance tomography. Finally we explain how to adapt the level set method to the distributed shape derivative framework and present numerical results.

Shape optimization of an electric motor subject to nonlinear magnetostatics

The goal of this paper is to improve the performance of an electric motor by modifying the geometry of a specific part of the iron core of its rotor. To be more precise, the objective is to smooth the rotation pattern of the rotor. A shape optimization problem is formulated by introducing a tracking-type cost functional to match a desired rotation pattern. The magnetic field generated by permanent magnets is modeled by a nonlinear partial differential equation of magnetostatics. The shape sensitivity analysis is rigorously performed for the nonlinear problem by means of a new shape-Lagrangian formulation adapted to nonlinear problems.
