Monte Carlo Rendering to Diffusion Curves with Differential BEM

We present a method for generating vector graphics, in the form of diffusion curves, directly from noisy samples produced by a Monte Carlo renderer. While generating raster images from 3D geometry via Monte Carlo raytracing is commonplace, there is no corresponding practical approach for robustly and directly extracting editable vector images with shading information from 3D geometry. To fill this gap, we formulate the problem as a stochastic optimization problem over the space of geometries and colors of diffusion curve handles, and solve it with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. At the core of our method is a novel differential boundary element method (BEM) framework that reconstructs colors from diffusion curve handles and computes gradients with respect to their parameters, requiring the expensive matrix factorization only once at the beginning of the optimization. Unlike triangulation-based techniques that require a clean domain decomposition, our method is robust to geometrically challenging scenarios, such as intersecting diffusion curves, and to color noise in the target image, enabling the direct use of noisy Monte Carlo samples without requiring a converged, error-free input image. We demonstrate the robustness and broad applicability of our approach across several test cases. Finally, we highlight several open questions raised by our work, which spans both theory and applications.

Local Deformation for Interactive Shape Editing

We introduce a novel regularization for localizing an elastic-energy-driven deformation to only those regions being manipulated by the user. Our local deformation features a natural region of influence, which is automatically adaptive to the geometry of the shape, the size of the deformation and the elastic energy in use. We further propose a three-block ADMM-based optimization to efficiently minimize the energy and achieve interactive frame rates. Our approach avoids the artifacts of other alternative methods, is simple and easy to implement, does not require tedious control primitive setup and generalizes across different dimensions and elastic energies. We demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of our localized deformation tool through a variety of local editing scenarios, including 1D, 2D, 3D elasticity and cloth deformation.

Inpainting at Modern Camera Resolution by Guided PatchMatch with Auto-Curation

Recently, deep models have established SOTA performance for low-resolution image inpainting, but they lack fidelity at resolutions associated with modern cameras such as 4K or more, and for large holes. We contribute an inpainting benchmark dataset of photos at 4K and above representative of modern sensors. We demonstrate a novel framework that combines deep learning and traditional methods. We use an existing deep inpainting model LaMa to fill the hole plausibly, establish three guide images consisting of structure, segmentation, depth, and apply a multiply-guided PatchMatch to produce eight candidate upsampled inpainted images. Next, we feed all candidate inpaintings through a novel curation module that chooses a good inpainting by column summation on an 8x8 antisymmetric pairwise preference matrix. Our framework's results are overwhelmingly preferred by users over 8 strong baselines, with improvements of quantitative metrics up to 7.4 over the best baseline LaMa, and our technique when paired with 4 different SOTA inpainting backbones improves each such that ours is overwhelmingly preferred by users over a strong super-res baseline.
