Nonlinear stability of spatially-periodic traveling-wave solutions of systems of reaction diffusion equations

Using spatial domain techniques developed by the authors and Myunghyun Oh in the context of parabolic conservation laws, we establish under a natural set of spectral stability conditions nonlinear asymptotic stability with decay at Gaussian rate of spatially periodic traveling-waves of systems of reaction diffusion equations. In the case that wave-speed is identically zero for all periodic solutions, we recover and slightly sharpen a well-known result of Schneider obtained by renormalization/Bloch transform techniques; by the same arguments, we are able to treat the open case of nonzero wave-speeds to which Schneider's renormalization techniques do not appear to apply

Efficient numerical stability analysis of detonation waves in ZND

As described in the classic works of Lee--Stewart and Short--Stewart, the numerical evaluation of linear stability of planar detonation waves is a computationally intensive problem of considerable interest in applications. Reexamining this problem from a modern numerical Evans function point of view, we derive a new algorithm for their stability analysis, related to a much older method of Erpenbeck, that, while equally simple and easy to implement as the standard method introduced by Lee--Stewart, appears to be potentially faster and more stable.

Transition to longitudinal instability of detonation waves is generically associated with Hopf bifurcation to time-periodic galloping solutions

We show that transition to longitudinal instability of strong detonation solutions of reactive compressible Navier--Stokes equations is generically associated with Hopf bifurcation to nearby time-periodic "galloping", or "pulsating", solutions, in agreement with physical and numerical observation. In the process, we determine readily numerically verifiable stability and bifurcation conditions in terms of an associated Evans function, and obtain the first complete nonlinear stability result for strong detonations of the reacting Navier--Stokes equations, in the limit as amplitude (hence also heat release) goes to zero. The analysis is by pointwise semigroup techniques introduced by the authors and collaborators in previous works.

Convergence of Hill's method for nonselfadjoint operators

By the introduction of a generalized Evans function defined by an appropriate 2-modified Fredholm determinant, we give a simple proof of convergence in location and multiplicity of Hill's method for numerical approximation of spectra of periodic-coefficient ordinary differential operators. Our results apply to operators of nondegenerate type, under the condition that the principal coefficient matrix be symmetric positive definite (automatically satisfied in the scalar case). Notably, this includes a large class of nonselfadjoint operators, which were previously not treated. The case of general coefficients depends on an interesting operator-theoretic question regarding properties of Toeplitz matrices.

Whitham Averaged Equations and Modulational Stability of Periodic Traveling Waves of a Hyperbolic-Parabolic Balance Law

In this note, we report on recent findings concerning the spectral and nonlinear stability of periodic traveling wave solutions of hyperbolic-parabolic systems of balance laws, as applied to the St. Venant equations of shallow water flow down an incline. We begin by introducing a natural set of spectral stability assumptions, motivated by considerations from the Whitham averaged equations, and outline the recent proof yielding nonlinear stability under these conditions. We then turn to an analytical and numerical investigation of the verification of these spectral stability assumptions. While spectral instability is shown analytically to hold in both the Hopf and homoclinic limits, our numerical studies indicates spectrally stable periodic solutions of intermediate period. A mechanism for this moderate-amplitude stabilization is proposed in terms of numerically observed "metastability" of the the limiting homoclinic orbits.

High-frequency asymptotics and 1-D stability of ZND detonations in the small-heat release and high-overdrive limits

We establish one-dimensional spectral, or "normal modes", stability of ZND detonations in the small heat release limit and the related high overdrive limit with heat release and activation energy held fixed, verifying numerical observations of Erpenbeck in the 1960s. The key technical points are a strategic rescaling of parameters converting the infinite overdrive limit to a finite, regular perturbation problem, and a careful high-frequency analysis depending uniformly on model parameters. The latter recovers the important result of high-frequency stability established by Erpenbeck by somewhat different techniques. Notably, the techniques used here yield quantitative estimates well suited for numerical stability investigation.

Metastability of solitary roll wave solutions of the St. Venant equations with viscosity

We study by a combination of numerical and analytical Evans function techniques the stability of solitary wave solutions of the St. Venant equations for viscous shallow-water flow down an incline, and related models. Our main result is to exhibit examples of metastable solitary waves for the St. Venant equations, with stable point spectrum indicating coherence of the wave profile but unstable essential spectrum indicating oscillatory convective instabilities shed in its wake. We propose a mechanism based on ``dynamic spectrum'' of the wave profile, by which a wave train of solitary pulses can stabilize each other by de-amplification of convective instabilities as they pass through successive waves. We present numerical time evolution studies supporting these conclusions, which bear also on the possibility of stable periodic solutions close to the homoclinic. For the closely related viscous Jin-Xin model, by contrast, for which the essential spectrum is stable, we show using the stability index of Gardner--Zumbrun that solitary wave pulses are always exponentially unstable, possessing point spectra with positive real part.

Existence and stability of viscoelastic shock profiles

We investigate existence and stability of viscoelastic shock profiles for a class of planar models including the incompressible shear case studied by Antman and Malek-Madani. We establish that the resulting equations fall into the class of symmetrizable hyperbolic--parabolic systems, hence spectral stability implies linearized and nonlinear stability with sharp rates of decay. The new contributions are treatment of the compressible case, formulation of a rigorous nonlinear stability theory, including verification of stability of small-amplitude Lax shocks, and the systematic incorporation in our investigations of numerical Evans function computations determining stability of large-amplitude and or nonclassical type shock profiles.

Existence and stability of steady states of a reaction convection diffusion equation modeling microtubule formation

We generalize the Dogterom-Leibler model for microtubule dynamics [DL] to the case where the rates of elongation as well as the lifetimes of the elongating and shortening phases are a function of GTP-tubulin concentration. We study also the effect of nucleation rate in the form of a damping term which leads to new steady-states. For this model, we study existence and stability of steady states satisfying the boundary conditions at x = 0. Our stability analysis introduces numerical and analytical Evans function computations as a new mathematical tool in the study of microtubule dynamics.

On the Modulation Equations and Stability of Periodic GKdV Waves via Bloch Decompositions

In this paper, we complement recent results of Bronski and Johnson and of Johnson and Zumbrun concerning the modulational stability of spatially periodic traveling wave solutions of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. In this previous work it was shown by rigorous Evans function calculations that the formal slow modulation approximation resulting in the Whitham system accurately describes the spectral stability to long wavelength perturbations. Here, we reproduce this result without reference to the Evans function by using direct Bloch-expansion methods and spectral perturbation analysis. This approach has the advantage of applying also in the more general multi-periodic setting where no conveniently computable Evans function is yet devised. In particular, we complement the picture of modulational stability described by Bronski and Johnson by analyzing the projectors onto the total eigenspace bifurcating from the origin in a neighborhood of the origin and zero Floquet parameter. We show the resulting linear system is equivalent, to leading order and up to conjugation, to the Whitham system and that, consequently, the characteristic polynomial of this system agrees (to leading order) with the linearized dispersion relation derived through Evans function calculation.

Transverse Instability of Periodic Traveling Waves in the Generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equation

In this paper, we investigate the spectral instability of periodic traveling wave solutions of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation to long wavelength transverse perturbations in the generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. By analyzing high and low frequency limits of the appropriate periodic Evans function, we derive an orientation index which yields sufficient conditions for such an instability to occur. This index is geometric in nature and applies to arbitrary periodic traveling waves with minor smoothness and convexity assumptions on the nonlinearity. Using the integrable structure of the ordinary differential equation governing the traveling wave profiles, we are then able to calculate the resulting orientation index for the elliptic function solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries and modified Korteweg-de Vries equations.

Nonlinear stability of periodic traveling wave solutions of viscous conservation laws in dimensions one and two

Extending results of Oh and Zumbrun in dimensions $d\ge 3$, we establish nonlinear stability and asymptotic behavior of spatially-periodic traveling-wave solutions of viscous systems of conservation laws in critical dimensions $d=1,2$, under a natural set of spectral stability assumptions introduced by Schneider in the setting of reaction diffusion equations. The key new steps in the analysis beyond that in dimensions $d\ge 3$ are a refined Green function estimate separating off translation as the slowest decaying linear mode and a novel scheme for detecting cancellation at the level of the nonlinear iteration in the Duhamel representation of a modulated periodic wave.

Nonlinear stability of periodic traveling wave solutions of systems of viscous conservation laws in the generic case

Extending previous results of Oh--Zumbrun and Johnson--Zumbrun, we show that spectral stability implies linearized and nonlinear stability of spatially periodic traveling-wave solutions of viscous systems of conservation laws for systems of generic type, removing a restrictive assumption that wave speed be constant to first order along the manifold of nearby periodic solutions.

Existence and stability of viscous shock profiles for 2-D isentropic MHD with infinite electrical resistivity

For the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations of isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with $γ$-law gas equation of state, $γ\ge 1$, and infinite electrical resistivity, we carry out a global analysis categorizing all possible viscous shock profiles. Precisely, we show that the phase portrait of the traveling-wave ODE generically consists of either two rest points connected by a viscous Lax profile, or else four rest points, two saddles and two nodes. In the latter configuration, which rest points are connected by profiles depends on the ratio of viscosities, and can involve Lax, overcompressive, or undercompressive shock profiles. For the monatomic and diatomic cases $γ=5/3$ and $γ= 7/5$, with standard viscosity ratio for a nonmagnetic gas, we find numerically that the the nodes are connected by a family of overcompressive profiles bounded by Lax profiles connecting saddles to nodes, with no undercompressive shocks occurring. We carry out a systematic numerical Evans function analysis indicating that all of these two-dimensional shock profiles are linearly and nonlinearly stable, both with respect to two- and three-dimensional perturbations. For the same gas constants, but different viscosity ratios, we investigate also cases for which undercompressive shocks appear; these are seen numerically to be stable as well

Rigorous Justification of the Whitham Modulation Equations for the Generalized Korteweg-de Vries Equation

In this paper, we consider the spectral stability of spatially periodic traveling wave solutions of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation to long-wavelength perturbations. Specifically, we extend the work of Bronski and Johnson by demonstrating that the homogenized system describing the mean behavior of a slow modulation (WKB) approximation of the solution correctly describes the linearized dispersion relation near zero frequency of the linearized equations about the background periodic wave. The latter has been shown by rigorous Evans function techniques to control the spectral stability near the origin, i.e. stability to slow modulations of the underlying solution. In particular, through our derivation of the WKB approximation we generalize the modulation expansion of Whitham for the KdV to a more general class of equations which admit periodic waves with nonzero mean. As a consequence, we will show that, assuming a particular non-degeneracy condition, spectral stability near the origin is equivalent with the local well-posedness of the Whitham system.

Instantaneous shock location and one-dimensional nonlinear stability of viscous shock wave

We illustrate in a simple setting the instantaneous shock tracking approach to stability of viscous conservation laws introduced by Howard, Mascia, and Zumbrun. This involves a choice of the definition of instanteous location of a viscous shock-- we show that this choice is time-asymptotically equivalent both to the natural choice of least-squares fit pointed out by Goodman and to a simple phase condition used by Guès, Métivier, Williams, and Zumbrun in other contexts. More generally, we show that it is asymptotically equivalent to any location defined by a localized projection

Existence of quasilinear relaxation shock profiles

We establish existence with sharp rates of decay and distance from the Chapman--Enskog approximation of small-amplitude quasilinear relaxation shocks in the general case that the profile ODE may become degenerate. Our method of analysis follows the general approach used by Métivier and Zumbrun in the semilinear case, based on Chapman--Enskog expansion and the macro--micro decomposition of Liu and Yu. In the quasilinear case, however, we find it necessary to apply a parameter-dependent Nash-Moser iteration to close the analysis, whereas, in the semilinear case, a simple contraction-mapping argument sufficed.

Stability of radiative shock profiles for hyperbolic-elliptic coupled systems

Extending previous work with Lattanzio and Mascia on the scalar (in fluid-dynamical variables) Hamer model for a radiative gas, we show nonlinear orbital asymptotic stability of small-amplitude shock profiles of general systems of coupled hyperbolic--eliptic equations of the type modeling a radiative gas, that is, systems of conservation laws coupled with an elliptic equation for the radiation flux, including in particular the standard Euler--Poisson model for a radiating gas. The method is based on the derivation of pointwise Green function bounds and description of the linearized solution operator, with the main difficulty being the construction of the resolvent kernel in the case of an eigenvalue system of equations of degenerate type. Nonlinear stability then follows in standard fashion by linear estimates derived from these pointwise bounds, combined with nonlinear-damping type energy estimates
