High-Q AlN microresonators for nonlinear near-infrared and near-visible photonics

High Q-factors of microresonators are crucial for nonlinear integrated photonics, as many nonlinear dynamics have quadratic or even cubic dependence on Q-factors. The unique material properties make AlN microresonators invaluable for microcomb generation, Raman lasing and visible integrated photonics. However, the loss level of AlN falls behind other integrated platforms. By optimizing the fabrication, we demonstrate record Q-factors of 5.4$\times$10$^6$ and 2.2$\times$10$^6$ for AlN microresonators in the near-infrared and near-visible, respectively. Polarized-mode-interaction was used to create anomalous dispersion to support bright AlN Dirac solitons. Measurement of polarization-dependent spectra reveals the polarization hybridization of the Dirac soliton. In a microresonator with normal dispersion, Raman assisted four-wave-mixing (RFWM) was observed to initiate platicon formation, adding an approach to generate normal dispersion microcombs. A design of width-varying waveguides was used to ensure both efficient coupling and high Q-factor for racetrack microresonators at 780 nm. The microresonator was pumped to generate near-visble Raman laser at 820 nm with a fundamental linewidth narrower than 220 Hz. Our work unlocks new opportunities for integrated AlN photonics by improving Q-factors and uncovering nonlinear dynamics in AlN microresonators.

Narrow-band photodetection by heterolattice electronic transitions in TiO$_2$ glass embedded with nanocrystals

In this letter, we propose that the narrowband photodetection can be realized in the skin layer of semiconductors with the spatially separated photo-excited carriers from the nanoscale heterolattice electronic transitions (NanoHLETs). The NanoHLET photodetection is demonstrated by measuring the photoconductive responses of the $\sim$ 1 $\mu$m thick films of TiO$_{2}$ glass embedded with rutile and anatase TiO$_{2}$ nanocrystals. As containing only rutile nanocrystals, the TiO$_{2}$ glass film presents the responsivity curve with only one sharp peak centered at 423.0 nm with a full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 13.7 nm. This NanoHLET mechanism may open a new way in making ultra-small narrow-band photodetectors matching the current nanoscale electronic technology.

Spatiotemporal mode-locking in lasers with large modal dispersion

Dissipative nonlinear wave dynamics have been investigated extensively in mode-locked lasers with single transverse-mode, whereas there are few studies related to three-dimensional nonlinear dynamics within lasers. Recently, spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) was proposed in lasers with small modal (i.e., transverse-mode) dispersion, which has been considered to be critical for achieving STML in those cavities because the small dispersion can be easily balanced. Here, we demonstrate that STML can also be achieved in multimode lasers with much larger modal dispersion, where we find that the intracavity saturable absorber plays an important role for counteracting the large modal dispersion. Furthermore, we observe a new STML phenomenon of passive nonlinear auto-selection of single-mode mode-locking, resulting from the interaction between spatiotemporal saturable absorption and spatial gain competition. Our work significantly broadens the design possibilities for useful STML lasers thus making them much more accessible for applications, and extends the explorable parameter space of the novel dissipative spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics that can be achieved in these lasers.
