Quantum Squeezing Induced Optical Nonreciprocity

We propose an all-optical approach to achieve optical nonreciprocity on a chip by quantum squeezing one of two coupled resonator modes. By parametric pumping a nonlinear resonator unidirectionally with a classical coherent field, we squeeze the resonator mode in a selective direction due to the phase-matching condition, and induce a chiral photon interaction between two resonators. Based on this chiral interresonator coupling, we achieve an all-optical diode and a three-port quasi-circulator. By applying a second squeezed-vacuum field to the squeezed resonator mode, our nonreciprocal device also works for single-photon pulses. We obtain an isolation ratio of >40 dB for the diode and fidelity of $>98\%$ for the quasi-circulator, and insertion loss of <1 dB for both. We also show that nonreciprocal transmission of strong light can be switched on and off by a relative weak pump light. This achievement implies a nonreciprocal optical transistor. Our protocol opens up a new route to achieve integrable all-optical nonreciprocal devices permitting chip-compatible optical isolation and nonreciporcal quantum information processing.

Towards On-Demand Heralded Single-Photon Sources via Photon Blockade

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a laser pumped optical nonlinear medium can produce heralded single photons with a high purity but a very low yield. Improving the yield by increasing the pump power in SPDC inevitably reduces the purity due to excitation of multi-photon events. We propose a scheme to overcome this purity-yield trade-off by suppressing multi-photon events in a cavity-enhanced SPDC via the photon blockade effect. By introducing a strong photon-photon interaction into the intracavity medium and increasing the pump power, we can improve the available single-photon yield to larger than $90\%$, while maintaining a high purity of $99\%$, towards on-demand generation of single photons through the SPDC process. Our quasi-on-demand SPDC sources may boost single-photon-based quantum information technology.

Resource-efficient analyzer of Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states of multiphoton systems

We propose a resource-efficient error-rejecting entangled-state analyzer for polarization-encoded multiphoton systems. Our analyzer is based on two single-photon quantum-nondemolition detectors, where each of them is implemented with a four-level emitter (e.g., a quantum dot) coupled to a one-dimensional system (such as a micropillar cavity or a photonic nanocrystal waveguide). The analyzer works in a passive way and can completely distinguish $2^n$ Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger~(GHZ) states of $n$ photons without using any active operation or fast switching. The efficiency and fidelity of the GHZ-state analysis can, in principle, be close to unity, when an ideal single-photon scattering condition is fulfilled. For a nonideal scattering, which typically reduces the fidelity of a GHZ-state analysis, we introduce a passively error-rejecting circuit to enable a near-perfect fidelity at the expense of a slight decrease of its efficiency. Furthermore, the protocol can be directly used to perform a two-photon Bell-state analysis. This passive, resource-efficient, and error-rejecting protocol can, therefore, be useful for practical quantum networks.

On-Chip Chiral Single-Photon Interface: Isolation and Unidirectional Emission

Chiral quantum systems have received intensive attention in fundamental physics and applications in quantum information processing including optical isolation and photon unidirectional emission. Here, we design an on-chip emitter-resonator system with strong chiral light-matter interaction for a chiral single-photon interface. The system includes a microring resonator with a strong evanescent field and a near-unity optical chirality along both of the whole outside and inside walls, allowing a strong and chiral coupling of the Whispering-Gallery mode to a quantum emitter. By initializing a quantum dot in a specific spin ground state or shifting the transition energy with a polarization-selective optical Stark effect, we show a broadband optical isolation at the single-photon level over several GHz. Furthermore, a quantum emitter chirally coupling to the microring resonator can emit single photons unidirectionally. Our protocol paves a way to realize multifunctional chiral single-photon interface in on-chip quantum information processing and quantum networks.

Quantum memory and gates using a Lambda-type quantum emitter coupled to a chiral waveguide

By coupling a $Λ$-type quantum emitter to a chiral waveguide, in which the polarization of a photon is locked to its propagation direction, we propose a controllable photon-emitter interface for quantum networks. We show that this chiral system enables the SWAP gate and a hybrid-entangling gate between the emitter and a flying single photon. It also allows deterministic storage and retrieval of single-photon states with high fidelities and efficiencies. In short, this chirally coupled emitter-photon interface can be a critical building block toward a large-scale quantum network.

Chaotic synchronization of two optical cavity modes in optomechanical systems

The synchronization of the motion of microresonators has attracted considerable attention. Here we present theoretical methods to synchronize the chaotic motion of two optical cavity modes in an optomechanical system, in which one of the optical modes is strongly driven into chaotic motion and is coupled to another weakly-driven optical mode mediated by a mechanical resonator. In these optomechanical systems, we can obtain both complete and phase synchronization of the optical cavity modes in chaotic motion, starting from different initial states. We find that complete synchronization of chaos can be achieved in two identical cavity modes. In the strong-coupling small-detuning regime, we also {produce} phase synchronization of chaos between two nonidentical cavity modes.

Squeezing giant spin states via geometric phase control in cavity-assisted Raman transitions

Squeezing ensemble of spins provides a way to surpass the standard quantum limit (SQL) in quantum metrology and test the fundamental physics as well, and therefore attracts broad interest. Here we propose an experimentally accessible protocol to squeeze a giant ensemble of spins via the geometric phase control. Using the cavity-assisted Raman transitions in a double $Λ$-type system, we realize an effective Dicke model. Under the condition of vanishing effective spin transition frequency, we find a particular evolution time where the cavity decouples from the spins and the spin ensemble is squeezed considerably. Our scheme has the potential to improve the sensitivity in quantum metrology with spins by about two orders.

Hybrid quantum gate and entanglement between a "stationary" photonic qubit and a flying optical state via a giant cross Kerr nonlinear effect

Quantum information processing with hybrid protocols making use of discrete- and continuous-variable currently attracts of great interest because of its promising applications in scalable quantum computer and distant quantum network. By inducing a giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity between two cavities, we propose a general protocol for hybrid quantum gate and quantum entanglement with high fidelity between a stationary, discrete photonic qubit and a flying photonic state. Interestingly, our protocol can be used to conduct a controlled-Z quantum gate between a stationary microwave photon stored in a slowly-decaying microwave cavity and a flying optical photon, and therefore enable to build quantum network for distant superconducting quantum circuits.

Generating spin squeezing states and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger entanglement using a hybrid phonon-spin ensemble in diamond

Quantum squeezing and entanglement of spins can be used to improve the sensitivity in quantum metrology. Here we propose a scheme to create collective coupling of an ensemble of spins to mechanical vibrational mode actuated by an external magnetic field. We find an evolution time where the mechanical motion decouples from the spins, and the accumulated geometric phase yields a squeezing of $5.9~\text{dB}$ for $20$ spins. We also show the creation of a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger spin state for $20$ spins with a fidelity of $\sim 0.62$ at cryogenic temperature. The numerical simulations show that the geometric-phase based scheme is mostly immune to thermal mechanical noise.

Quantum routing of single optical photons with a superconducting flux qubit

Controlling and swapping quantum information in a quantum coherent way between the microwave and optical regimes is essential for building long-range superconducting quantum networks but extremely challenging. We propose a hybrid quantum interface between the microwave and optical domains where the propagation of a single-photon pulse along a nanowaveguide is controlled in a coherent way by tuning electromagnetically induced transparency window with the quantum state of a flux qubit. The qubit can route a single-photon pulse with a single spin in nanodiamond into a quantum superposition of paths without the aid of an optical cavity - simplifying the setup. By preparing the flux qubit in a superposition state our cavity-less scheme creates a hybrid state-path entanglement between a flying single optical photon and a static superconducting qubit, and can conduct heralded quantum state transfer via measurement.

Plasmonic nano-resonator enhanced one-photon luminescence from single gold nanorods

Strong Stokes and anti-Stokes one-photon luminescence from single gold nanorods is measured in experiments. It is found that the intensity and polarization of the Stokes and anti-Stokes emissions are in strong correlation. Our experimental observation discovered a coherent process in light emission from single gold nanorods. We present a theoretical mode, based on the concept of cavity resonance, for consistently understanding both Stokes and anti-Stokes photoluminescence. Our theory is in good agreement of all our measurements.

Deterministic generation of bright multicolor entanglement from optomechanical systems

Entangled continuous variable (CV) Gaussian states with different wavelengths plays a central role in recent CV-based approaches to quantum network, quantum information processing and quantum metrology. Typically, experiments demonstrating CV entanglement exploit the optical parametric frequency down conversion. Due to the probabilistic nature of photon pair generation, the entanglement involving the post-selection of photonic qubits is limited to at most three colors. Here We theoretically present a scheme for the deterministic generation of entanglement among bright multicolor CV Gaussian states from an optomechanical system using existing experimental technologies. In our scheme an optical frequency comb is input into an optomechanical resonator and then the amplified optomechanical coupling makes multipartite entanglement among them. Our scheme overcomes the limitation of usable frequency of entangled CVs in frequency conversion process. It can be extended to generate multipartite entanglement between orthogonal modes with a single frequency or between microwave and optical CVs, or even among a microwave frequency comb. This optomechanical device can be integrated on a chip.

Detection of a weak magnetic field via cavity enhanced Faraday rotation

We study the sensitive detection of a weak static magnetic field via Faraday rotation induced by an ensemble of spins in a bimodal degenerate microwave cavity. We determine the limit of the resolution for the sensitivity of the magnetometry achieved using either single-photon or multiphoton inputs. For the case of a microwave cavity containing an ensemble of Nitrogen-vacancy defects in diamond, we obtain a magnetometry sensitivity exceeding $0.5~\text{\nano\tesla}/\sqrt{\text{\hertz}}$, utilizing a single photon probe field, while for a multiphoton input we achieve a sensitivity about $1 \text{\femto\tesla}/\sqrt{\text{\hertz}}$, using a coherent probe microwave field with power of $P_\text{in}=1~\text{\nano\watt}$.

Giant enhancement of tunable optomechanical coupling via ultrarefractive medium

Exploring the fundamental quantum behaviour of optomechanical resonators is of great interest recently but requires the realization of the strong coupling regime. We study the optical photon-phonon coupling of the so-called membrane in the middle (MITM) optomechanical system. Using coupled-mode theory we find that the optomechanical coupling is proportional to the electric susceptibility of the membrane. By considering the doping atoms or spins into the membrane and driving these appropriately we induce a tunable ultra-large refractive index without absorption which enhances the optomechanical coupling. Using this we predict an ultra-strong single-optical photon strong coupling with large quantum cooperativity for Er3+ dopants at low temperature, while Cr3+ in a Ruby membrane may display ultra-large quantum cooperativity at room temperature. Our scheme also can tune the strength of the coupling over a wide range and can also control whether the optomechanical force is attractive or repulsive. Our work opens a door for fundamental physics and applications relying on the realization of the strong coupling regime in quantum optomechanical systems.

Cavity-free nondestructive detection of a single optical photon

Detecting a single photon without absorbing it is a long standing challenge in quantum optics. All experiments demonstrating the nondestructive detection of a photon make use of a high quality cavity. We present a cavity free scheme for nondestructive single-photon detection. By pumping a nonlinear medium we implement an inter-field Rabi-oscillation which leads to a ?pi phase shift on weak probe coherent laser field in the presence of a single signal photon without destroying the signal photon. Our cavity-free scheme operates with a fast intrinsic time scale in comparison with similar cavity-based schemes. We implement a full real-space multimode numerical analysis of the interacting photonic modes and confirm the validity of our nondestructive scheme in the multimode case.

Solid state optical interconnect between distant superconducting quantum chips

We propose a design for a quantum interface exploiting the electron spins in crystals to swap the quantum states between the optical and microwave. Using sideband driving of a superconducting flux qubit and a combined cavity/solid-state spin ensemble Raman transition, we demonstrate how a stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP)-type operation can swap the quantum state between a superconducting flux qubit and an optical cavity mode with a fidelity higher than $90\%$. We further consider two distant superconducting qubits with their respective interfaces joined by an optical fiber and show a quantum transfer fidelity exceeding $90\%$ between the two distant qubits.

Phase-controlled Fano resonance by the nanoscale optomechanics

Observation of the Fano line shapes is essential to understand properties of the Fano resonance in different physical systems. We explore a tunable Fano resonance by tuning the phase shift in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on a single-mode nano-optomechanical cavity. The Fano resonance is resulted from the optomechanically induced transparency caused by a nano-mechanical resonator and can be tuned by applying an optomechanical MZI. By tuning the phase shift in one arm of the MZI, we can observe the periodically varying line shapes of the Fano resonance, which represents an elaborate manipulation of the Fano resonance in the nanoscale optomechanics.

An opto-magneto-mechanical quantum interface between distant superconducting qubits

A quantum internet, where widely separated quantum devices are coherently connected, is a fundamental vision for local and global quantum information networks and processing. Superconducting quantum devices can now perform sophisticated quantum engineering locally on chip and a detailed method to achieve coherent optical quantum interconnection between distant superconducting devices is a vital, but highly challenging, goal. We describe a concrete opto-magneto-mechanical system that can interconvert microwave-to-optical quantum information with high fidelity. In one such node we utilise the magnetic fields generated by the supercurrent of a flux qubit to coherently modulate a mechanical oscillator that is part of a high-Q optical cavity to achieve high fidelity microwave-to-optical quantum information exchange. We analyze the transfer between two spatially distant nodes connected by an optical fibre and using currently accessible parameters we predict that the fidelity of transfer could be as high as $\sim 80\%$, even with significant loss.
