Ergodic Rate Analysis of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Massive MIMO Systems with ZF Detectors

This letter investigates the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a two-timescale design. First, the zero-forcing (ZF) detector is applied at the base station (BS) based on instantaneous aggregated CSI, which is the superposition of the direct channel and the cascaded user-RIS-BS channel. Then, by leveraging the channel statistical property, we derive the closed-form ergodic achievable rate expression. Using a gradient ascent method, we design the RIS passive beamforming only relying on the long-term statistical CSI. We prove that the ergodic rate can reap the gains on the order of $\mathcal{O}\left(\log_{2}\left(MN\right)\right)$, where $M$ and $N$ denote the number of BS antennas and RIS elements, respectively. We also prove the striking superiority of the considered RIS-aided system with ZF detectors over the RIS-free systems and RIS-aided systems with maximum-ratio combining (MRC).

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-aided URLLC in a Factory Automation Scenario

Different from conventional wired line connections, industrial control through wireless transmission is widely regarded as a promising solution due to its reduced cost, increased long-term reliability, and enhanced reliability. However, mission-critical applications impose stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements that entail ultra-reliability low-latency communications (URLLC). The primary feature of URLLC is that the blocklength of channel codes is short, and the conventional Shannon's Capacity is not applicable. In this paper, we consider the URLLC in a factory automation (FA) scenario. Due to densely deployed equipment in FA, wireless signal are easily blocked by the obstacles. To address this issue, we propose to deploy intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to create an alternative transmission link, which can enhance the transmission reliability. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis for IRS-aided URLLC-enabled communications in a FA scenario. Both the average data rate (ADR) and the average decoding error probability (ADEP) are derived under finite channel blocklength for seven cases: 1) Rayleigh fading channel; 2) With direct channel link; 3) Nakagami-m fading channel; 4) Imperfect phase alignment; 5) Multiple-IRS case; 6) Rician fading channel; 7) Correlated channels. Extensive numerical results are provided to verify the accuracy of our derived results.

Statistical CSI-Based Transmission Design for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-aided Massive MIMO Systems with Hardware Impairments

We consider a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with transceiver hardware impairments (HWIs) and RIS phase noise. Different from the existing contributions, the phase shifts of the RIS are designed based on the long-term angle informations. Firstly, an approximate analytical expression of the uplink achievable rate is derived. Then, we use genetic algorithm (GA) to maximize the sum rate and the minimum date rate. Finally, we show that it is crucial to take HWIs into account when designing the phase shift of RIS.

Fairness-Oriented Multiple RISs-Aided MmWave Transmission: Stochastic Optimization Methods

In millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, it is challenging to ensure the reliable connectivity of communications due to its sensitivity to the presence of blockages. In order to improve the robustness of the mmWave system under the presence of the random blockages, multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are deployed to enhance the spatial diversity gain, and robust beamforming is then designed based on a stochastic optimization for minimizing the maximum outage probability among multiple users to ensure the fairness. Under the stochastic optimization framework, we adopt the stochastic majorization--minimization (SMM) method and the stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) method to construct deterministic surrogate problems at each iteration for new channel realizations, and obtain the closed-form solutions of the precoding matrix at the base station (BS) and the passive beamforming vectors at the RISs. Both stochastic optimization methods have been proved to converge to the set of stationary points of the original stochastic problems. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed robust beamforming in the RIS-aided system can effectively compensate for the performance loss caused by the presence of the random blockages, especially at high blockage probability, compared with the benchmark solutions.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface aided Massive MIMO Systems with Low-Resolution DACs

We investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user massive multiple-input multi-output (MIMO) system where low-resolution digital-analog converters (DACs) are configured at the base station (BS) in order to reduce the cost and power consumption. An approximate analytical expression for the downlink achievable rate is derived based on maximum ratio transmission (MRT) and additive quantization noise model (AQNM), and the rate maximization problem is solved by particle swarm optimization (PSO) method under both continuous phase shifts (CPSs) and discrete phase shifts (DPSs) at the RIS. Simulation results show that the downlink sum achievable rate tends to a constant with the increase of the number of quantization bits of DACs, and four quantization bits are enough to capture a large portion of the performance of the ideal perfect DACs case.

Multi-User Cooperative Computation Framework Based on Bertrand Game

In this paper, a multi-user cooperative computing framework is applied to enable mobile users to utilize available computing resources from other neighboring users via direct communication links. An incentive scheme based on Bertrand game is proposed for the user to determine \textit{who} and \textit{how} to cooperate. We model the resource demand users as \textit{buyers} who aim to use minimal payments to maximize energy savings, whereas resource supply users as \textit{sellers} who aim to earn payments for their computing resource provision. A Bertrand game against \textit{buyer's market} is formulated. When the users have \textit{complete information} of their opponents, the Nash equilibrium (NE) of the game is obtained in closed form, while in the case of \textit{incomplete information}, a distributed iterative algorithm is proposed to find the NE. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

A Framework of Robust Transmission Design for IRS-aided MISO Communications with Imperfect Cascaded Channels

Intelligent reflection surface (IRS) has recently been recognized as a promising technique to enhance the performance of wireless systems due to its ability of reconfiguring the signal propagation environment. However, the perfect channel state information (CSI) is challenging to obtain at the base station (BS) due to the lack of radio frequency (RF) chains at the IRS. Since most of the existing channel estimation methods were developed to acquire the cascaded BS-IRS-user channels, this paper is the first work to study the robust beamforming based on the imperfect cascaded BS-IRS-user channels at the transmitter (CBIUT). Specifically, the transmit power minimization problems are formulated subject to the worst-case rate constraints under the bounded CSI error model and the rate outage probability constraints under the statistical CSI error model, respectively. After approximating the worst-case rate constraints by using the S-procedure and the rate outage probability constraints by using the Bernstein-type inequality, the reformulated problems can be efficiently solved. Numerical results show that the negative impact of the CBIUT error on the system performance is greater than that of the direct CSI error.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided MISO Systems with Statistical CSI: Channel Estimation, Analysis and Optimization

This paper investigates the reconfigurable reflecting surface (RIS)-aided multiple-input-single-output (MISO) systems with imperfect channel state information (CSI), where RIS-related channels are modeled by Rician fading. Considering the overhead and complexity in practical systems, we employ the low-complexity maximum ratio combining (MRC) beamforming at the base station (BS), and configure the phase shifts of the RIS based on long-term statistical CSI. Specifically, we first estimate the overall channel matrix based on the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator, and evaluate the performance of MSE and normalized MSE (NMSE). Then, with the estimated channel, we derive the closed-form expressions of the ergodic rate. The derived expressions show that with Rician RIS-related channels, the rate can maintain at a non-zero value when the transmit power is scaled down proportionally to $1/M$ or $1/N^2$, where $M$ and $N$ are the number of antennas and reflecting elements, respectively. However, if all the RIS-related channels are fully Rayleigh, the transmit power of each user can only be scaled down proportionally to $1/\sqrt{M}$ or $1/N$. Finally, numerical results verify the promising benefits from the RIS to traditional MISO systems.

User Cooperation for IRS-aided Secure SWIPT MIMO Systems

In this paper, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is proposed to enhance the physical layer security in the Rician fading channel where the angular direction of the eavesdropper is aligned with a legitimate user. In this scenario, we consider a two-phase communication system under the active attacks and passive eavesdropping. Particularly, in the first phase, the base station avoids direct transmission to the attacked user. While, in the second phase, other users cooperate to forward signals to the attacked user with the help of IRS and energy harvesting technology. Under the active attacks, we investigate an outage constrained beamforming design problem under the statistical cascaded channel error model, which is solved by using the Bernstein-type inequality. As for the passive eavesdropping, an average secrecy rate maximization problem is formulated, which is addressed by a low complexity algorithm. Numerical results show that the negative effect of the eavesdropper's channel error is greater than that of the legitimate user.

Power Scaling Law Analysis and Phase Shift Optimization of RIS-aided Massive MIMO Systems with Statistical CSI

This paper considers an uplink reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with statistical channel state information (CSI). The RIS is deployed to help conventional massive MIMO networks serve the users in the dead zone. We consider the Rician channel model and exploit the long-time statistical CSI to design the phase shifts of the RIS, while the maximum ratio combination (MRC) technique is applied for the active beamforming at the base station (BS) relying on the instantaneous CSI. Firstly, we reveal the power scaling laws and derive the closed-form expressions for the uplink achievable rate which holds for arbitrary numbers of base station (BS) antennas. Based on the theoretical expressions, we discuss the rate performance under some special cases and provide the average asymptotic rate when using random phase shifts. Then, we consider the sum-rate maximization and the minimum user rate maximization problems by optimizing the phase shifts at the RIS. However, these two optimization problems are challenging to solve due to the complicated data rate expression. To solve these problems, we propose a novel genetic algorithm (GA) with low complexity but can achieve considerable performance. Finally, extensive simulations are provided to validate the benefits by integrating RIS into conventional massive MIMO systems. Besides, our simulations demonstrate the feasibility of deploying large-size but low-resolution RIS in massive MIMO systems.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for 6G Systems: Principles, Applications, and Research Directions

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) or intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs), are regarded as one of the most promising and revolutionizing techniques for enhancing the spectrum and/or energy efficiency of wireless systems. These devices are capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment by carefully tuning the phase shifts of a large number of low-cost passive reflecting elements. In this article, we aim for answering four fundmental questions: 1) Why do we need RISs? 2) What is an RIS? 3) What are RIS's applications? 4) What are the relevant challenges and future research directions? In response, eight promising research directions are pointed out.

Secure Wireless Communication in RIS-Aided MISO Systems with Hardware Impairments

In practice, residual transceiver hardware impairments inevitably lead to distortion noise which causes the performance loss. In this paper, we study the robust transmission design for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided secure communication system in the presence of transceiver hardware impairments. We aim for maximizing the secrecy rate while ensuring the transmit power constraint on the active beamforming at the base station and the unit-modulus constraint on the passive beamforming at the RIS. To address this problem, we adopt the alternate optimization method to iteratively optimize one set of variables while keeping the other set fixed. Specifically, the successive convex approximation (SCA) method is used to solve the active beamforming optimization subproblem, while the passive beamforming is obtained by using the semidefinite program (SDP) method. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed transmission design scheme is more robust to the hardware impairments than the conventional non-robust scheme that ignores the impact of the hardware impairments.

Private and Utility Enhanced Recommendations with Local Differential Privacy and Gaussian Mixture Model

Recommendation systems rely heavily on users behavioural and preferential data (e.g. ratings, likes) to produce accurate recommendations. However, users experience privacy concerns due to unethical data aggregation and analytical practices carried out by the Service Providers (SP). Local differential privacy (LDP) based perturbation mechanisms add noise to users data at user side before sending it to the SP. The SP then uses the perturbed data to perform recommendations. Although LDP protects the privacy of users from SP, it causes a substantial decline in predictive accuracy. To address this issue, we propose an LDP-based Matrix Factorization (MF) with a Gaussian Mixture Model (MoG). The LDP perturbation mechanism, Bounded Laplace (BLP), regulates the effect of noise by confining the perturbed ratings to a predetermined domain. We derive a sufficient condition of the scale parameter for BLP to satisfy $ε$ LDP. At the SP, The MoG model estimates the noise added to perturbed ratings and the MF algorithm predicts missing ratings. Our proposed LDP based recommendation system improves the recommendation accuracy without violating LDP principles. The empirical evaluations carried out on three real world datasets, i.e., Movielens, Libimseti and Jester, demonstrate that our method offers a substantial increase in predictive accuracy under strong privacy guarantee.

UAV-Assisted and Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces-Supported Terahertz Communications

In this paper, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and intelligent reflective surface (IRS) are utilized to support terahertz (THz) communications. To this end, the joint optimization of UAV's trajectory, the phase shift of IRS, the allocation of THz sub-bands, and the power control is investigated to maximize the minimum average achievable rate of all the users. An iteration algorithm based on successive Convex Approximation with the Rate constraint penalty (CAR) is developed to obtain UAV's trajectory, and the IRS phase shift is formulated as a closed-form expression with introduced pricing factors. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly enhances the rate performance of the whole system.

We first derive the closed-form expression of the uplink ergodic data rate. Then, based on the derived expression, we use the genetic algorithm (GA) to solve the sum data rate maximization problem. With low-complexity maximal-ratio combination (MRC) and low-overhead statistical CSI-based scheme, we validate that the RIS can still bring significant performance gains to traditional massive MIMO systems.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Dynamic Trajectory Control for UAV-assisted Mobile Edge Computing

In this paper, we consider a platform of flying mobile edge computing (F-MEC), where unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) serve as equipment providing computation resource, and they enable task offloading from user equipment (UE). We aim to minimize energy consumption of all the UEs via optimizing the user association, resource allocation and the trajectory of UAVs. To this end, we first propose a Convex optimizAtion based Trajectory control algorithm (CAT), which solves the problem in an iterative way by using block coordinate descent (BCD) method. Then, to make the real-time decision while taking into account the dynamics of the environment (i.e., UAV may take off from different locations), we propose a deep Reinforcement leArning based Trajectory control algorithm (RAT). In RAT, we apply the Prioritized Experience Replay (PER) to improve the convergence of the training procedure. Different from the convex optimization based algorithm which may be susceptible to the initial points and requires iterations, RAT can be adapted to any taking off points of the UAVs and can obtain the solution more rapidly than CAT once training process has been completed. Simulation results show that the proposed CAT and RAT achieve the similar performance and both outperform traditional algorithms.

Self-Sustainable Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Simultaneous Terahertz Information and Power Transfer (STIPT)

This paper proposes a new simultaneous terahertz (THz) information and power transfer (STIPT) system, which is assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for both the information data and power transmission. We aim to maximize the information users' (IUs') data rate while guaranteeing the energy users' (EUs') and RIS's power harvesting requirements. To solve the formulated non-convex problem, the block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm is adopted to alternately optimize the transmit precoding of IUs, RIS's reflecting coefficients, and RIS's coordinate. The Penalty Constrained Convex Approximation (PCCA) Algorithm is proposed to solve the intractable optimization problem of the RIS's coordinate, where the solution's feasibility is guaranteed by the introduced penalties. Simulation results confirm that the proposed BCD algorithm can significantly enhance the performance of STIPT by employing RIS.

Completion Time Minimization in Wireless-Powered UAV-Assisted Data Collection System (Full Version)

In unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted data collection system, UAVs can be deployed to charge ground terminals (GTs) via wireless power transfer (WPT) and collect data from them via wireless information transmission (WIT). In this paper, we aim to minimize the time required by a UAV via jointly optimizing the trajectory of the UAV and the transmission scheduling for all the GTs. This problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) which are difficult to address in general. To this end, we develop an iterative algorithm based on binary search and successive convex optimization (SCO) to solve it. The simulation shows that our proposed solution outperforms the benchmark algorithms.
