A 6G White Paper on Connectivity for Remote Areas

In many places all over the world rural and remote areas lack proper connectivity that has led to increasing digital divide. These areas might have low population density, low incomes, etc., making them less attractive places to invest and operate connectivity networks. 6G could be the first mobile radio generation truly aiming to close the digital divide. However, in order to do so, special requirements and challenges have to be considered since the beginning of the design process. The aim of this white paper is to discuss requirements and challenges and point out related, identified research topics that have to be solved in 6G. This white paper first provides a generic discussion, shows some facts and discusses targets set in international bodies related to rural and remote connectivity and digital divide. Then the paper digs into technical details, i.e., into a solutions space. Each technical section ends with a discussion and then highlights identified 6G challenges and research ideas as a list.

White Paper on Broadband Connectivity in 6G

This white paper explores the road to implementing broadband connectivity in future 6G wireless systems. Different categories of use cases are considered, from extreme capacity with peak data rates up to 1 Tbps, to raising the typical data rates by orders-of-magnitude, to support broadband connectivity at railway speeds up to 1000 km/h. To achieve these goals, not only the terrestrial networks will be evolved but they will also be integrated with satellite networks, all facilitating autonomous systems and various interconnected structures. We believe that several categories of enablers at the infrastructure, spectrum, and protocol/ algorithmic levels are required to realize the intended broadband connectivity goals in 6G. At the infrastructure level, we consider ultra-massive MIMO technology (possibly implemented using holographic radio), intelligent reflecting surfaces, user-centric and scalable cell-free networking, integrated access and backhaul, and integrated space and terrestrial networks. At the spectrum level, the network must seamlessly utilize sub-6 GHz bands for coverage and spatial multiplexing of many devices, while higher bands will be used for pushing the peak rates of point-to-point links. The latter path will lead to THz communications complemented by visible light communications in specific scenarios. At the protocol/algorithmic level, the enablers include improved coding, modulation, and waveforms to achieve lower latencies, higher reliability, and reduced complexity. Different options will be needed to optimally support different use cases. The resource efficiency can be further improved by using various combinations of full-duplex radios, interference management based on rate-splitting, machine-learning-based optimization, coded caching, and broadcasting.

On the Performance of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access over Composite Fading Channels

This paper analyzes the performance of a cooperative relaying non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network over Fisher-Snedecor F composite fading channels. Specifically, one base station (BS) is assumed to communicate with two receiving mobile users with one acting also as a decode-and-forward (DF) relay. To highlight the achievable performance gains of the NOMA scheme, conventional relaying with orthogonal multiple access (OMA) is also analyzed. For the two systems under consideration, we derive novel exact closed-form expressions for the ergodic capacity along with the corresponding asymptotic representations. The derived expressions are then used to assess the influence of various system parameters, including the fading and shadowing parameters, on the performance of both the NOMA and OMA systems. Monte-Carlo simulation are provided throughout to verify the accuracy of our analysis. Results reveal that the NOMA system can considerably outperform the OMA approach when the power allocation factor is carefully selected. It is also shown that as the fading and/or shadowing parameters are increased, the ergodic capacity performance enhances.

Full-Duplex Energy-Harvesting Enabled Relay Networks in Generalized Fading Channels

This paper analyzes the performance of a full-duplex decode-and-forward relaying network over the generalized κ-μfading channel. The relay is energy-constrained and relies entirely on harvesting the power signal transmitted by the source based on the time-switching relaying protocol. A unified analytical expression for the ergodic outage probability is derived for the system under consideration. This is then used to derive closed-form analytical expressions for three special cases of the κ-μfading model, namely, Nakagami-m, Rice and Rayleigh. Monte Carlo simulations are provided throughout to verify the correctness of our analysis.

Analysis of Optimized Threshold with SLM based Blanking Non-Linearity for Impulsive Noise Reduction in Power Line Communication Systems

High amplitude impulsive noise (IN) occurrence over power line channels severely degrades the performance of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)systems. One of the simplest methods to reduce IN is to precede the OFDM demodulator with a blanking non-linearity processor. In this respect, Selective Mapping (SLM) applied to an OFDM signal before the transmitter does not only reduce Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) but also increases the resulting Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) when blanking nonlinearity is applied at the receiver. This paper highlights another advantage of SLM based IN reduction, which is the reduced dependency on threshold used for blanking nonlinearity. The simulation results show that the optimal threshold to achieve maximum SNR is found to be constant for phase vectors greater than or equal to 64 in the SLM scheme. If the optimized threshold calculation method is used, the output SNR with SLM OFDM will result in SNR gains of up to 8.6dB compared to the unmodified system, i.e. without implementing SLM. Moreover, by using SLM, we not only get the advantage of low peak power, but also the need to calculate optimized threshold is eliminated, thereby reducing the additional computation.

On the Secrecy Capacity of Fisher-Snedecor F Fading Channels

The performance of physical-layer security of the classic Wyner's wiretap model over Fisher-Snedecor F composite fading channels is considered in this work. Specifically, the main channel (i.e., between the source and the legitimate destination) and the eavesdropper's channel (i.e., between the source and the illegitimate destination) are assumed to experience independent quasi-static Fisher-Snedecor F fading conditions, which have been shown to be encountered in realistic wireless transmission scenarios in conventional and emerging communication systems. In this context, exact closed-form expressions for the average secrecy capacity (ASC) and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNSC) are derived. Additionally, an asymptotic analytical expression for the ASC is also presented. The impact of shadowing and multipath fading on the secrecy performance is investigated. Our results show that increasing the fading parameter of the main channel and or the shadowing parameter of the eavesdropper's channel improves the secrecy performance. The analytical results are compared with Monte-Carlo simulations to validate the analysis.
