Entire functions with an arithmetic sequence of exponents

For a given entire function $f(z)=\sum_{j=0}^{\infty}a_{j}z^{j}$, we study the zero distribution of $f_{r}(z)=\sum_{j\equiv r\pmod m}a_{j}z^{j}$ where $m\in\mathbb{N}$ and $0\le r<m$. We find conditions under which the zeros of $f_{r}(z)$ lie on $m$ radial rays defined by $\Im z^{m}=0$ and $\Re z^{m}\le0$.

Active Membership Inference Attack under Local Differential Privacy in Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) was originally regarded as a framework for collaborative learning among clients with data privacy protection through a coordinating server. In this paper, we propose a new active membership inference (AMI) attack carried out by a dishonest server in FL. In AMI attacks, the server crafts and embeds malicious parameters into global models to effectively infer whether a target data sample is included in a client's private training data or not. By exploiting the correlation among data features through a non-linear decision boundary, AMI attacks with a certified guarantee of success can achieve severely high success rates under rigorous local differential privacy (LDP) protection; thereby exposing clients' training data to significant privacy risk. Theoretical and experimental results on several benchmark datasets show that adding sufficient privacy-preserving noise to prevent our attack would significantly damage FL's model utility.

Zeros of Taylor polynomials formed by a three-term recurrence

From a sequence $\left\{ a_{n}\right\} _{n=0}^{\infty}$ of real numbers satisfying a three-term recurrence, we form a sequence of polynomials $\left\{ P_{m}(z)\right\} _{m=0}^{\infty}$ whose coefficients are numbers in this sequence. We showed that under explicit conditions, the zeros of $P_{m}(z)$, $m\gg1$, lie on one side of the circle whose radius is given by modulus of a zero of the denominator of the generating function of $\left\{ a_{n}\right\} _{n=0}^{\infty}$.

On the zeros of certain Sheffer sequences and their cognate sequences

Given a Sheffer sequence of polynomials, we introduce the notion of an associated sequence called the cognate sequence. We study the relationship between the zeros of this pair of associated sequences and show that in case of an Appell sequence, as well as a more general family of Sheffer sequences, the zeros of the members of each sequence (for large n) are either real, or lie on a line $\Re (z)=c$. In addition to finding the zero locus, we also find the limiting probability distribution function of such sequences.

Heterogeneous Randomized Response for Differential Privacy in Graph Neural Networks

Graph neural networks (GNNs) are susceptible to privacy inference attacks (PIAs), given their ability to learn joint representation from features and edges among nodes in graph data. To prevent privacy leakages in GNNs, we propose a novel heterogeneous randomized response (HeteroRR) mechanism to protect nodes' features and edges against PIAs under differential privacy (DP) guarantees without an undue cost of data and model utility in training GNNs. Our idea is to balance the importance and sensitivity of nodes' features and edges in redistributing the privacy budgets since some features and edges are more sensitive or important to the model utility than others. As a result, we derive significantly better randomization probabilities and tighter error bounds at both levels of nodes' features and edges departing from existing approaches, thus enabling us to maintain high data utility for training GNNs. An extensive theoretical and empirical analysis using benchmark datasets shows that HeteroRR significantly outperforms various baselines in terms of model utility under rigorous privacy protection for both nodes' features and edges. That enables us to defend PIAs in DP-preserving GNNs effectively.

The zero locus and some combinatorial properties of certain exponential Sheffer sequences

We present combinatorial and analytical results concerning a Sheffer sequence with an exponential generating function of the form $G(s,z)=e^{czs+αz^{2}+βz^{4}}$, where $α, β, c \in \mathbb{R}$ with $β<0$ and $c\neq 0$. We demonstrate that the zeros of all polynomials in such a Sheffer sequence are either real, or purely imaginary. Additionally, using the properties of Riordan matrices we show that our Sheffer sequence satisfies a three-term recurrence relation of order 4, and we also exhibit a connection between the coefficients of these Sheffer polynomials and the number of nodes with a a given label in certain marked generating trees.

Zeros of a table of polynomials satisfying a four-term contiguous relation

For any $A(z),B(z),C(z)\in\mathbb{C}[z]$, we study the zero distribution of a table of polynomials $\left\{ P_{m,n}(z)\right\} _{m,n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}}$ satisfying the recurrence relation \[ P_{m,n}(z)=A(z)P_{m-1,n}(z)+B(z)P_{m,n-1}(z)+C(z)P_{m-1,n-1}(z) \] with the initial condition $P_{0,0}(z)=1$ and $P_{-m,-n}(z)=0$ $\forall m,n\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that the zeros of $P_{m,n}(z)$ lie on a curve whose equation is given explicitly in terms of $A(z),B(z)$, and $C(z)$. We also study the zero distribution of a case with a general initial condition.

On combinatorial properties and the zero distribution of certain Sheffer sequences

We present combinatorial and analytical results concerning a Sheffer sequence with a generating function of the form $G(x,z)=Q(z)^{x}Q(-z)^{1-x}$, where $Q$ is a quadratic polynomial with real zeros. By using the properties of Riordan matrices we address combinatorial properties and interpretations of our Sheffer sequence of polynomials and their coefficients. We also show that apart from two exceptional zeros, the zeros of polynomials with large enough degree in such a Sheffer sequence lie on the line $x=1/2+it$.

Zeros of a binomial combination of Chebyshev polynomials

For $0<α<1$, we study the zeros of the sequence of polynomials $\left\{ P_{m}(z)\right\} _{m=0}^{\infty}$ generated by the reciprocal of $(1-t)^α(1-2zt+t^{2})$, expanded as a power series in $t$. Equivalently, this sequence is obtained from a linear combination of Chebyshev polynomials whose coefficients have a binomial form. We show that the number of zeros of $P_{m}(z)$ outside the interval $(-1,1)$ is bounded by a constant independent of $m$.

Linear combinations of polynomials with three-term recurrence

We study the zero distribution of the sum of the first $n$ polynomials satisfying a three-term recurrence whose coefficients are linear polynomials. We also extend this sum to a linear combination, whose coefficients are powers of $az+b$ for $a,b\in\mathbb{R}$, of Chebyshev polynomials. In particular, we find necessary and sufficient conditions on $a$, $b$ such that this linear combination is hyperbolic.

Hyperbolic polynomials and linear-type generating functions

We prove that the polynomials generated by the relation $\displaystyle{\sum_{m=0}^{\infty} H_m(z)t^m=\frac{1}{P(t)+z t^r Q(t)}}$ are hyperbolic for $m \gg 1$ given that the zeros of the real polynomials $P$ and $Q$ are real and sufficiently separated. The paper also contains a result on a certain family of exponential polynomials, which are demonstrated to have infinitely many real zeros.

Zeros of polynomials with four-term recurrence and linear coefficients

This paper investigates the zero distribution of a sequence of polynomials $\left\{ P_{m}(z)\right\} _{m=0}^{\infty}$ generated by the reciprocal of $1+ct+B(z)t^{2}+A(z)t^{3}$ where $c\in\mathbb{R}$ and $A(z)$, $B(z)$ are real linear polynomials. We study necessary and sufficient conditions for the reality of the zeros of $P_{m}(z)$. Under these conditions, we find an explicit interval containing these zeros, whose union forms a dense subset of this interval.

Zeros of polynomials with four-term recurrence

For any real numbers $b,c\in\mathbb{R}$, we form the sequence of polynomials $\left\{ H_{m}(z)\right\} _{m=0}^{\infty}$ satisfying the four-term recurrence \[ H_{m}(z)+cH_{m-1}(z)+bH_{m-2}(z)+zH_{m-3}(z)=0,\qquad m\ge3, \] with the initial conditions $H_{0}(z)=1$, $H_{1}(z)=$$-c$, and $H_{2}(z)=-b+c^{2}$. We find necessary and sufficient conditions on $b$ and $c$ under which the zeros of $H_{m}(z)$ are real for all $m$, and provide an explicit real interval on which ${\displaystyle \bigcup_{m=0}^{\infty}\mathcal{Z}(H_{m})}$ is dense where $\mathcal{Z}(H_{m})$ is the set of zeros of $H_{m}(z)$.

On the zeros of polynomials generated by rational functions with a hyperbolic polynomial type denominator

This paper investigates the location of the zeros of a sequence of polynomials generated by a rational function with a denominator of the form $G(z,t)=P(t)+zt^{r}$, where the zeros of $P$ are positive and real. We show that every member of a family of such generating functions - parametrized by the degree of $P$ and $r$ - gives rise to a sequence of polynomials $\{H_{m}(z)\}_{m=0}^{\infty}$ that is eventually hyperbolic. Moreover, when $P(0)>0$ the real zeros of the polynomials $H_{m}(z)$ form a dense subset of an interval $I\subset\mathbb{R}^{+}$, whose length depends on the particular values of the parameters in the generating function.

Pair correlation of roots of rational functions with rational generating functions and quadratic denominators

For any rational functions with complex coefficients $A(z), B(z)$ and $C(z)$, where $A(z)$, $C(z)$ are not identically zero, we consider the sequence of rational functions $H_{m}(z)$ with generating function $\sum H_{m}(z)t^{m}=1/(A(z)t^{2}+B(z)t+C(z))$. We provide an explicit formula for the limiting pair correlation function of the roots of $\prod_{m=0}^{n}H_{m}(z)$, as $n\rightarrow\infty$, counting multiplicities, on certain closed subarcs $J$ of a curve $\mathcal{C}$ where the roots lie. We give an example where the limiting pair correlation function does not exist if $J$ contains the endpoints of $\mathcal{C}$.

Connections between discriminants and the root distribution of polynomials with rational generating function

Let $H_{m}(z)$ be a sequence of polynomials whose generating function $\sum_{m=0}^{\infty}H_{m}(z)t^{m}$ is the reciprocal of a bivariate polynomial $D(t,z)$. We show that in the three cases $D(t,z)=1+B(z)t+A(z)t^{2}$, $D(t,z)=1+B(z)t+A(z)t^{3}$ and $D(t,z)=1+B(z)t+A(z)t^{4}$, where $A(z)$ and $B(z)$ are any polynomials in $z$ with complex coefficients, the roots of $H_{m}(z)$ lie on a portion of a real algebraic curve whose equation is explicitly given. The proofs involve the $q$-analogue of the discriminant, a concept introduced by Mourad Ismail.

The root distribution of polynomials with a three-term recurrence

For any fixed positive integer $n$, we study the root distribution of a sequence of polynomials $H_{m}(z)$ satisfying the rational generating function \[ \sum_{m=0}^{\infty}H_{m}(z)t^{m}=\frac{1}{1+B(z)t+A(z)t^{n}} \] where $A(z)$ and $B(z)$ are any polynomials in $z$ with complex coefficients. We show that the roots of $H_{m}(z)$ which satisfy $A(z)\ne0$ lie on a specific fixed real algebraic curve for all large $m$.
