Close encounters with the Stirling numbers of the second kind

This is a historical introduction to the theory of Stirling numbers of the second kind S(n,k) from the point of view of analysis. We tell the story of their birth in the book of James Stirling (1730) and show how they mature in the works of Johann Grunert (1843). We demonstrate their usefulness in several differentiation formulas. The reader can also see the connection to Bernoulli numbers, to Euler polynomials and to power sums.

Series with Hermite Polynomials and Applications

We obtain a series transformation formula involving the classical Hermite polynomials. We then provide a number of applications using appropriate binomial transformations. Several of the new series involve Hermite polynomials and harmonic numbers, Lucas sequences, exponential and geometric numbers. We also obtain a series involving both Hermite and Laguerre polynomials, and a series with Hermite polynomials and Stirling numbers of the second kind.

Binomial transform and the backward difference

We prove an important property of the binomial transform: it converts multiplication by the discrete variable into a certain difference operator. We also consider the case of dividing by the discrete variable. The properties presented here are used to compute various binomial transform formulas involving harmonic numbers, skew-harmonic numbers, Fibonacci numbers, and Stirling numbers of the second kind. Several new identities are proved and some known results are given new short proofs.

Power series with skew-harmonic numbers, dilogarithms, and double integrals

The skew-harmonic numbers are the partial sums of the alternating harmonic series, i.e. the expansion of log(2). We evaluate in closed form various power series and numerical series with skew-harmonic numbers. This provides a simultaneous solution of two recent problems by Ovidiu Furdui in the American Mathematical Monthly and the College Mathematics Journal. We also present and discuss representations involving the dilogarithm and the trilogaithm which are related to our results. Finally, we provide the evaluations of several double integrals in terms of classical constants.

Binomial transform of products

Given two infinite sequences with known binomial transforms, we compute the binomial transform of the product sequence. Various identities are obtained and numerous examples are given involving sequences of special numbers: Harmonic numbers, Bernoulli numbers, Fibonacci numbers, and also Laguerre polynomials.

Lah numbers and Laguerre polynomials of order negative one

In this article we point out interesting connections among Lah numbers, Laguerre polynomials of order negative one, and exponential polynomials. We also discuss several different expressions for the higher order derivatives of exp (1/x). A new representation of these derivatives is given in terms of exponential polynomials

Some integrals related to the Basel problem

We evaluate several arctangent and logarithmic integrals depending on a parameter. This provides a closed form summation of certain series and also gives integral and series representation of some classical constants.

Power Series with Binomial Sums and Asymptotic Expansions

This paper is a study of power series, where the coefficients are binomial expressions (iterated finite differences). Our results can be used for series summation, for series transformation, or for asymptotic expansions involving Stirling numbers of the second kind. In certain cases we obtain asymptotic expansions involving Bernoulli polynomials, poly-Bernoulli polynomials, or Euler polynomials. We also discuss connections to Euler series transformations and other series transformation formulas.

Euler Sums of Hyperharmonic Numbers

The hyperharmonic numbers h_{n}^{(r)} are defined by means of the classical harmonic numbers. We show that the Euler-type sums with hyperharmonic numbers: σ(r,m)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}((h_{n}^{(r)})/(n^{m})) can be expressed in terms of series of Hurwitz zeta function values. This is a generalization of a result of Mező and Dil. We also provide an explicit evaluation of σ(r,m) in a closed form in terms of zeta values and Stirling numbers of the first kind. Furthermore, we evaluate several other series involving hyperharmonic numbers.

Harmonic motion and Cassini ovals

We consider a two-dimensional free harmonic oscillator where the initial position is fixed and the initial velocity can change direction. All possible orbits are ellipses and their enveloping curve is an ellipse too. We show that the locus of the foci of all elliptical orbits is a Cassini oval. Depending on the magnitude of the initial velocity we observe all three kinds of Cassini ovals, one of which is the lemniscate of Bernoulli. These Cassini ovals have the same foci as the enveloping ellipse.
