Spectral asymptotics and Lamé spectrum for coupled particles in periodic potentials

We make two observations on the motion of coupled particles in a periodic potential. Coupled pendula, or the space-discretized sine-Gordon equation is an example of this problem. Linearized spectrum of the synchronous motion turns out to have a hidden asymptotic periodicity in its dependence on the energy; this is the gist of the first observation. Our second observation is the discovery of a special property of the purely sinusoidal potentials: the linearization around the synchronous solution is equivalent to the classical Lamè equation. As a consequence, {\it all but one instability zones of the linearized equation collapse to a point for the one-harmonic potentials}. This provides a new example where Lamé's finite zone potential arises in the simplest possible setting.

Chaotic dynamics of a bouncing coin

We study the dynamics of a bouncing coin whose motion is restricted to the two-dimensional plane. Such coin model is equivalent to the system of two equal masses connected by a rigid rod, making elastic collisions with a flat boundary. We first describe the coin system as a point billiard with a scattering boundary. Then we analytically verify that the billiard map acting on the two disjoint sets produces a Smale horseshoe structure. We also prove that any random sequence of coin collisions can be realized by choosing an appropriate initial condition.

Three-Period Orbits in Billiards on the Surfaces of Constant Curvature

An approach due to Wojtkovski [9], based on the Jacobi fields, is applied to study sets of 3-period orbits in billiards on hyperbolic plane and on two-dimensional sphere. It is found that the set of 3-period orbits in billiards on hyperbolic plane, as in the planar case, has zero measure. For the sphere, a new proof of Baryshnikov's theorem is obtained which states that 3-period orbits can form a set of positive measure provided a natural condition on the orbit length is satisfied.
