Technical Report: Development of an Ultrahigh Bandwidth Software-defined Radio Platform

For the development of new digital signal processing systems and services, the rapid, easy, and convenient prototyping of ideas and the rapid time-to-market of products are becoming important with advances in technology. Conventionally, for the development stage, particularly when confirming the feasibility or performance of a new system or service, an idea is first confirmed through a computerbased software simulation after developing an accurate model of the operating environment. Next, this idea is validated and tested in the real operating environment. The new systems or services and their operating environments are becoming increasingly complicated. Hence, their development processes too are more complex cost- and time-intensive tasks that require engineers with skill and professional knowledge/experience. Furthermore, for ensuring fast time-to-market, all the development processes encompassing the (i) algorithm development, (ii) product prototyping, and (iii) final product development, must be closely linked such that they can be quickly completed. In this context, the aim of this paper is to propose an ultrahigh bandwidth software-defined radio platform that can prototype a quasi-real-time operating system without a developer having sophisticated hardware/software expertise. This platform allows the realization of a software-implemented digital signal processing system in minimal time with minimal efforts and without the need of a host computer.

On Secure NOMA-CDRT Systems with Physical Layer Network Coding

This paper proposes a new scheme to enhance the secrecy performance of a NOMA-based coordinated direct relay transmission system (NOMA-CDRT) with an untrusted relay. The physical-layer network coding and the non-orthogonal multiple access scheme are combined to improve the spectrum efficiency. Furthermore, inter-user interference and friendly jamming signals are utilized to suppress the eavesdropping ability of the untrusted relay without affecting the acceptance quality of legitimate users. Specifically, the far user in the first slot and the near user in the second slot act as jammers to generate jamming signals to ensure secure transmissions of the confidential signals. We investigate the secrecy performance of the proposed scheme in NOMA-CDRT systems and derive the closed-form expression for the ergodic secrecy sum rate. The asymptotic analysis at high signal-to-noise ratio is performed to obtain more insights. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and the correctness of the theoretical analysis.

Joint Trajectory Design and User Scheduling of Aerial Cognitive Radio Networks

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been widely employed to enhance the end-to-end performance of wireless communications since the links between UAVs and terrestrial nodes are line-of-sight (LoS) with high probability. However, the broadcast characteristics of signal propagation in LoS links make it vulnerable to being wiretapped by malicious eavesdroppers, which poses a considerable challenge to the security of wireless communications. This paper investigates the security of aerial cognitive radio networks (CRNs). An airborne base station transmits confidential messages to secondary users utilizing the same spectrum as the primary network. An aerial base station transmits jamming signals to suppress the eavesdropper to enhance secrecy performance. The uncertainty of eavesdropping node locations is considered, and the average secrecy rate of the cognitive user is maximized by optimizing multiple users' scheduling, the UAVs' trajectory, and transmit power. To solve the non-convex optimization problem with mixed multiple integers variable problem, we propose an iterative algorithm based on block coordinate descent and successive convex approximation. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm and demonstrate that our scheme is beneficial to improving the secrecy performance of aerial CRNs.

Throughput Maximization of Mixed FSO/RF UAV-aided Mobile Relaying with a Buffer

In this paper, we consider an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided mobile relaying system under a buffer constraint. We propose a new relaying protocol employing mixed free-space optical/radio frequency (FSO/RF) communication, i.e., the source-relay and relay-destination links utilize FSO and RF links, respectively, under the buffer constraint at the UAV relay node. Taking the conditions of an imbalance in transmission rate between RF and FSO links into consideration, we study the trajectory optimization problem of buffer-constrained UAV relay node in order to maximize the end-to-end data throughput. Especially, we classify two relaying transmission schemes according to the delay requirements, i.e., i) delay-limited transmission and ii) delay-tolerant transmission. We solve the locally optimal trajectory problem of the UAV to maximize the throughput of ground user terminal. As a result, we propose an iterative algorithm that efficiently finds a local optimum solution for the throughput maximization problems. Through this algorithm, we present the resulting trajectories over the the atmospheric condition, the buffer size, and the delay requirement. Also, we show the optimum buffer size and the throughput-delay tradeoff for a given system. Our numerical results validate that the proposed buffer-aided mobile relaying scheme achieves 65.55% throughput gains compared to conventional static relaying scheme.

Statistical Modeling of the Impact of Underwater Bubbles on an Optical Wireless Channel

In underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC), the random obstruction of light propagation by air bubbles can cause fluctuations in the incoming light intensity of a receiver. In this paper, we propose a statistical model for determining the received power by a receiver in the presence of air bubbles. First, based on real experiments of the behavior of air bubbles underwater, we propose statistical models for the generation, size, and horizontal distribution of each air bubble. Second, we mathematically derive the obstruction caused by the shadow of each bubble as it passes over the beam area. We then compute the combined obstruction of all generated air bubbles to determine the total obstructed power, which is a random variable due to the randomness of bubble behavior. Next, we find the first and second moments of the total obstructed power to model the statistical distribution of the obstructed received power by using the method of moments, which shows that the Weibull distribution suitably matches the simulation data. We also estimate the shape and scale parameters by using two derived moments. Furthermore, we also construct a statistical model of the received power with complete blockage in the presence of air bubbles and we derive the distribution of the composite channel model combining the proposed bubble-obstruction model with a Gamma-Gamma turbulence model. Finally, we obtain and verify the analytic forms of the average bit error rate and the capacity of UWOC systems under this newly proposed composite channel model.

On Secure Mixed RF-FSO Systems With TAS and Imperfect CSI

In this work, we analyze the secrecy outage performance of a dual-hop relay system composed of multiple-input-multiple-output radio-frequency (RF) links and a free-space optical (FSO) link while a multiple-antenna eavesdropper wiretaps the confidential information by decoding the received signals from the resource node. The channel state information (CSI) of the RF and FSO links is considered to be outdated. We propose three transmit antenna selection (TAS) schemes to enhance the secrecy performance of the considered systems. The secrecy outage performance with different TAS schemes is analyzed and the effects of misalignment and detection technology on the secrecy outage performance of mixed systems are studied. We derive the closed-form expressions for probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) over Málaga channel with imperfect CSI. Then the closed-form expressions for the CDF and PDF of the equivalent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the legitimate receiver over Nakagami-$m$ and Málaga channels are derived. Furthermore, the lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) with different TAS schemes are derived. Besides, the asymptotic results for SOP are investigated by exploiting the unfolding of Meijer's $G$-function when the electrical SNR of FSO link approaches infinity. Finally, Monte-Carlo simulation results are presented to testify the correctness of the proposed analysis. The results illustrate that the outdated CSI shows a strong effect on the secrecy outage performance. In addition, increasing the number of antennas at the source cannot significantly enhance the secrecy performance of the considered systems.

A UAV-Mounted Free Space Optical Communication: Trajectory Optimization for Flight Time

In this work, we address the trajectory optimization of a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) using free space optical communication (FSOC). Here, we focus on maximizing the flight time of the UAV by considering practical constraints for wireless UAV communication, including limited propulsion energy and required data rates. We find optimized trajectories in various atmospheric environments (e.g., moderate-fog and heavy-fog conditions), while also considering the channel characteristics of FSOC. In addition to maximizing the flight time, we consider the energy efficiency maximization and operation-time minimization problem to find the suboptimal solutions required to meet those constraints. Furthermore, we introduce a low-complexity approach to the proposed framework. In order to address the optimization problem, we conduct a bisection method and sequential programming and introduce a new feasibility check algorithm. Although our design considers suboptimal solutions owing to the nonconvexity of the problems, our simulations indicate that the proposed scheme exhibits a gain of approximately 44.12\% in terms of service time when compared to the conventional scheme.

A QoS-Oriented Trajectory Optimization in Swarming Unmanned-Aerial-Vehicles Communications

This letter aims to present a novel approach for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)' path planning with respect to certain quality of service requirements. More specifically, we study the max-min fairness problem in an air-to-ground communication system where multiple UAVs and multiple ground stations exist. We jointly optimize the UAVs trajectories and power allocation as well as the user scheduling. To this end, we propose an effective iterative algorithm that relies on the successive convex approximation and the block coordinate decent techniques.

Optical Camera Communications: Survey, Use Cases, Challenges, and Future Trends

Recently, a camera or an image sensor receiver based optical wireless communications (OWC) techniques have attracted particular interest in areas such as the internet of things, indoor localization, motion capture, and intelligent transportation systems. As a supplementary technique of high-speed OWC based on photo-detectors, communications hinging on image sensors as receivers do not need much modification to the current infrastructure, such that the implementation complexity and cost are quite low. Therefore, in this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of optical camera communication (OCC) techniques, and their use in localization, navigation, and motion capture. This survey is distinguishable from the existing reviews on this topic by covering multiple aspects of OCC and its various applications. The first part of the paper focuses on the standardization, channel characterization, modulation, coding, and synchronization of OCC systems while the second part of the article presents the literature on OCC based localization, navigation, and motion capture. Finally, in the last part of the paper, we present the challenges and future research directions of OCC.

Secrecy Outage Analysis of Mixed RF-FSO Downlink SWIPT Systems

We analyze a secure dual-hop mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) downlink simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems. The FSO link and all RF links experience Gamma-Gamma, independent and identical Nakagami-$m$ fading, respectively. We analyze the effects of atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, detection technology, path loss, and energy harvesting on secrecy performance. Signal-to-noise ratios at both legitimate and illegitimate receivers are not independent since they are both simultaneously influenced by the FSO link. We derive the closed-form expression of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) as well as the asymptotic result for SOP when signal-to-noise ratios at relay and legitimate destinations tend to infinity. Monte-Carlo simulations are performed to verify the accuracy of our analysis. The results show that the secrecy diversity order (SDO) depends on the fading parameter of the relay-destination link and the number of the destination's antennas. Additionally, the SDO also depends on the fading parameters, the pointing error parameter, and the detection type of the FSO link.

Secrecy Outage Analysis for Cooperative NOMA Systems with Relay Selection Scheme

This paper considers the secrecy outage performance of a multiple-relay assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels. Two slots are utilized to transmit signals from the base station to destination. At the first slot, the base station broadcasts the superposition signal of the two users to all decode-and-forward relays by message mapping strategy. Then the selected relay transmits superposition signal to the two users via power-domain NOMA technology. Three relay selection (RS) schemes, i.e., optimal single relay selection (OSRS) scheme, two-step single relay selection (TSRS) scheme, and optimal dual relay selection (ODRS) scheme, are proposed and the secrecy outage performance are analyzed. As a benchmark, we also examine the secrecy outage performance of the NOMA systems with traditional multiple relays combining (TMRC) scheme in which all the relay that successfully decode signals from the source forward signals to the NOMA users with equal power. Considering the correlation between the secrecy capacity of two users and different secrecy requirement for two NOMA users, the closed-form expressions for the security outage probability (SOP) of the proposed OSRS, TSRS, and ODRS schemes along with the TMRC scheme are derived and validated via simulations. To get more insights, we also derive the closed-form expressions for the asymptotic SOP for all the schemes with fixed and dynamic power allocations. Furthermore, the secrecy diversity order (SDO) of cooperative NOMA systems is obtained. The results demonstrate that our proposed schemes can significantly enhance the secrecy performance compared to the TMRC scheme and that all the RS schemes with fixed power allocation obtain zero SDO and the OSRS scheme with dynamic power allocation obtains the same SDO as TMRC.

An Improved Accurate Solver for the Time-Dependent RTE in Underwater Optical Wireless Communications

In this paper, an improved numerical solver to evaluate the time-dependent radiative transfer equation (RTE) for underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC) is investigated. The RTE evaluates the optical path-loss of light wave in an underwater channel in terms of the inherent optical properties related to the environments, namely the absorption and scattering coefficients as well as the phase scattering function (PSF). The proposed numerical algorithm was improved based on the ones proposed in [1]-[4], by modifying the finite difference scheme proposed in [1] as well as an enhancement of the quadrature method proposed in [2] by involving a more accurate 7-points quadrature scheme in order to calculate the quadrature weight coefficients corresponding to the integral term of the RTE. Furthermore, the scattering angular discretization algorithm used in [3] and [4] was modified, based on which the receiver's field of view discretization was adapted correspondingly. Interestingly, the RTE solver has been applied to three volume scattering functions, namely: the single-term HG phase function, the two-term HG phase function [5], and the Fournier-Forand phase function [6], over Harbor-I and Harbor-II water types. Based on the normalized received power evaluated through the proposed algorithm, the bit error rate performance of the UOWC system is investigated in terms of system and channel parameters. The enhanced algorithm gives a tightly close performance to its Monte Carlo counterpart improved based on the simulations provided in [7], by adjusting the numerical cumulative distribution function computation method as well as optimizing the number of scattering angles. Matlab codes for the proposed RTE solver are presented in [8].

Time, polarization, and wavelength multiplexing schemes have been used to satisfy the growing need of transmission capacity. Using space as a new dimension for communication systems has been recently suggested as a versatile technique to address future bandwidth issues. We review the potentials of harnessing the space as an additional degree of freedom for communication applications including free space optics, optical fiber installation, underwater wireless optical links, on-chip interconnects, data center indoor connections, radio frequency and acoustic communications. We focus on the orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes and equally identify the challenges related to each of the applications of spatial modes and the particular OAM modes in communication. We further discuss the perspectives of this emerging technology. Finally, we provide the open research directions and we discuss the practical deployment of OAM communication links for different applications.

Error Rate Analysis of Amplitude-Coherent Detection over Rician Fading Channels with Receiver Diversity

Amplitude-coherent (AC) detection is an efficient detection technique that can simplify the receiver design while providing reliable symbol error rate (SER). Therefore, this work considers AC detector design and SER analysis using M-ary amplitude shift keying (MASK) modulation over Rician fading channels. More specifically, we derive the optimum, near-optimum and a suboptimum AC detectors and compare their SER to the coherent, noncoherent and the heuristic AC detectors. Moreover, the analytical SER of the heuristic detector is derived using two different approaches for single and multiple receiving antennas. One of the derived expressions is expressed in terms of a single integral that can be evaluated numerically, while the second approach gives a closed-form analytical expression for the SER, which is also used to derive a simple formula for the asymptotic SER at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The obtained analytical and simulation results show that the SER of the AC and coherent MASK detectors are comparable, particularly for high values of the Rician K-factor, and small number of receiving antennas. Moreover, the obtained results show that the SER of the optimal AC detector is equivalent to that of the coherent detector. However, the optimal AC detector complexity is prohibitively high, particularly at high SNRs. In most of the scenarios, the heuristic AC detector significantly outperforms the optimum noncoherent detector, except for the binary ASK case at low SNRs. Moreover, the obtained results show that the heuristic AC detector is immune to phase noise, and thus, it outperforms the coherent detector in scenarios where system is subject to considerable phase noise.

Ordered Sequence Detection and Barrier Signal Design for Digital Pulse Interval Modulation in Optical Wireless Communications

This paper proposes an ordered sequence detection (OSD) for digital pulse interval modulation (DPIM) in optical wireless communications. Leveraging the sparsity of DPIM sequences, OSD shows comparable performance to the optimal maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) with much lower complexity. Compared with the widely adopted sample-by-sample optimal threshold detection (OTD), it considerably improves the bit error rate (BER) performance by mitigating error propagation. Moreover, this paper proposes a barrier signal-aided digital pulse interval modulation (BDPIM), where the last of every $K$ symbols is allocated with more power as an inserted barrier signal. BDPIM with OSD (BDPIM-OSD) can limit the error propagation between two adjacent barriers. To reduce the storing delay when using OSD to detect extremely large packets, we propose BDPIM with a combination of OTD and OSD (BDPIM-OTD-OSD), within which long sequences are cut into pieces and separately detected. Approximate upper bounds of the average BER performance of DPIM-OTD, DPIM-OSD, BDPIM-OSD and BDPIM-OTD-OSD are analyzed. Simulations are conducted to corroborate our analysis. Optimal parameter settings are also investigated in uncoded and coded systems by simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed OSD and BDPIM bring significant improvement in uncoded and coded systems over various channels.

Optimal Linear Precoding for Indoor Visible Light Communication System

Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging technique that uses light-emitting diodes (LED) to combine communication and illumination. It is considered as a promising scheme for indoor wireless communication that can be deployed at reduced costs while offering high data rate performance. In this paper, we focus on the design of the downlink of a multi-user VLC system. Inherent to multi-user systems is the interference caused by the broadcast nature of the medium. Linear precoding based schemes are among the most popular solutions that have recently been proposed to mitigate inter-user interference. This paper focuses on the design of the optimal linear precoding scheme that solves the max-min signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) problem. The performance of the proposed precoding scheme is studied under different working conditions and compared with the classical zero-forcing precoding. Simulations have been provided to illustrate the high gain of the proposed scheme.

Compression and Combining Based on Channel Shortening and Rank Reduction Techniques for Cooperative Wireless Sensor Networks

This paper investigates and compares the performance of wireless sensor networks where sensors operate on the principles of cooperative communications. We consider a scenario where the source transmits signals to the destination with the help of $L$ sensors. As the destination has the capacity of processing only $U$ out of these $L$ signals, the strongest $U$ signals are selected while the remaining $(L-U)$ signals are suppressed. A preprocessing block similar to channel-shortening is proposed in this contribution. However, this preprocessing block employs a rank-reduction technique instead of channel-shortening. By employing this preprocessing, we are able to decrease the computational complexity of the system without affecting the bit error rate (BER) performance. From our simulations, it can be shown that these schemes outperform the channel-shortening schemes in terms of computational complexity. In addition, the proposed schemes have a superior BER performance as compared to channel-shortening schemes when sensors employ fixed gain amplification. However, for sensors which employ variable gain amplification, a tradeoff exists in terms of BER performance between the channel-shortening and these schemes. These schemes outperform channel-shortening scheme for lower signal-to-noise ratio.
