Microscopic origin of local electric polarization in NiPS$_3$

Recently, Zhang-Rice triplet to singlet excitations have been measured experimentally and verified numerically in a van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS\textsubscript{3}, which reveals a collective local change of an electronic structure. In particular, such numerical simulations predicted that these electronic excitations occur simultaneously with local electric polarizations. In this study, we uncover the microscopic origin of this local electric polarization in the Zhang-Rice triplet to singlet excitation. Our lattice-model calculation predicts that the electric polarization can be controlled by applied magnetic fields, where the atomic spin-orbit coupling plays an important role. We speculate emergence of real space Berry curvature to describe the electric polarization in this strongly correlated system.

Anderson transition of in-gap quasiparticles in a quasi-two-dimensional disordered superconductor

The Anderson transition of Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) quasiparticles in superconducting state has been studied theoretically for last three decades. However, its experimental proof is lacking. In particular, the relationship of the superconducting order-parameter fluctuations and the Anderson transition of BdG quasiparticles have not been well understood. Our study, based on scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, investigates how BdG quasiparticles become Anderson-localized and delocalized as a function of energy and applied magnetic field in a quasi-two-dimensional Fe-based superconductor with sufficient zero-bias BdG quasiparticles. The anomalous multifractal spectra based on the spatial distributions of the pairing gaps and the coherent peak heights suggest that superconducting fluctuations play a key role in the delocalization of in-gap BdG quasiparticles. Our real-space Hartree-Fock-BCS-Anderson simulations and renormalization group analysis with pairing fluctuations support quasiparticle localization and suggest that enhanced pairing fluctuations lead to delocalization of BdG quasiparticles and "weak localization" of phase-fluctuating Cooper pairs in quasi-two-dimensional disordered superconductors. The present study proposes that the 10-fold way classification scheme has to be generalized to take order-parameter fluctuations in actual quantum matter. Also, it shed light on how ac energy loss due to quasiparticles at Fermi level can be controlled in a quasi-2d superconductor with sufficient pairing fluctuation.

Beyond quantum chaos in emergent dual holography

Black hole is well known to be a fast scrambler, responsible for physics of quantum chaos in dual holography. Recently, the Euclidean worm hole has been proposed to play a central role in the chaotic behavior of the spectral form factor. Furthermore, this phenomena was reinterpreted based on an effective field theory approach for quantum chaos. Since the graded nonlinear $σ-$model approach can describe not only the Wigner-Dyson level statistics but also its Poisson distribution, it is natural to ask whether the dual holography can touch the Poisson regime beyond the quantum chaos. In this study, we investigate disordered strongly coupled conformal field theories in the large central-charge limit. An idea is to consider a quenched average for metric fluctuations and to take into account the renormalization group flow of the metric-tensor distribution function from the UV to the IR boundary. Here, renormalization effects at a given disorder configuration are described by the conventional dual holography. We uncover that the renormalized distribution function shows a power-law behavior universally, interpreted as an infinite randomness fixed point.

Renormalization group flow to effective quantum mechanics at IR in an emergent dual holographic description for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking

Implementing the Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) transformation in a nonperturbative way, we construct an effective holographic dual description with an emergent extradimension identified with an RG scale. Taking the large$-N$ limit, we obtain an equation of motion of an order-parameter field, here the chiral condensate for our explicit demonstration. In particular, an intertwined structure manifests between the first-order RG flow equations of renormalized coupling functions and the second-order differential equation of the order-parameter field, thus referred to as a nonperturbative RG-improved mean-field theory. Assuming translational symmetry as a vacuum state, we solve these nonlinear coupled mean-field equations based on a matching method between UV- and IR-regional solutions. As a result, we find an RG flow from a weakly-coupled chiral-symmetric UV fixed point to a strongly-correlated chiral-symmetry broken IR fixed point, where the renormalized velocity of Dirac fermions vanishes most rapidly and effective quantum mechanics appears at IR. Furthermore, we translate these RG flows of coupling functions into those of emergent metric tensors and extract out geometrical properties of the emergent holographic spacetime constructed from the UV- and IR-regional solutions. Surprisingly, we obtain the volume law of entanglement entropy in the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, which implies appearance of a black hole type solution in the limit of infinite cutoff even at zero temperature. We critically discuss our field theoretic interpretation for this solution in terms of potentially gapless multi-particle excitation spectra.

Quantum phase transition from a paramagnetic Anderson insulating state to a ferromagnetic many-body localized state via an intermediate ferromagnetic metallic phase

Effects of electron correlations on Anderson insulators have been one of the central themes for recent two decades, suggesting that the Anderson insulating phase turns into a novel insulating state referred to as many body localization (MBL). However, the role of spin degrees of freedom in this dynamical phase transition still remains unclarified as a function of the interaction strength. In this study, we perform real-space spin-resolved Hartree-Fock-Anderson simulations to investigate metal-insulator transitions above a critical disorder strength in three spatial dimensions, where all single-particle states are Anderson-localized without interactions. Here, relatively weak correlations below the Mott regime are taken into account in the mean-field fashion but disorder effects are introduced essentially exactly. We find two types of single-particle mobility edges, where the multifractal spectrum of the interaction-driven low-energy mobility edge deviates from that of the high-energy one smoothly connected with the multifractal spectrum of the metal-insulator transition without interactions. We show that the weakly interacting insulating phase remains to be a paramagnetic Anderson insulating state up to the temperature of the order of the band width. On the other hand, we uncover that the relatively strongly interacting insulating phase still below the Mott regime is ferromagnetic, which turns into a ferromagnetic metallic state at a critical temperature much lower than the order of the bandwidth. Based on all these results, we propose a quantum phase transition from a paramagnetic Anderson insulating state to a ferromagnetic MBL insulating phase via an intermediate ferromagnetic metallic state, which intervenes between these two insulators at the Fermi energy.

Effects of general non-magnetic quenched disorder on a spin-density-wave quantum critical metallic system in two spatial dimension

We investigate the effects of general non-magnetic quenched disorder on a two-dimensional spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum critical metallic system and discuss how a clean SDW non-Fermi liquid state becomes modified, based on a renormalization group (RG) method. We consider (i) all possible scattering channels by a random charge potential for fermion fields and additionally (ii) a random mass term for a SDW boson order parameter as effects of the non-magnetic quenched disorder. From the one-loop analysis, we find a weakly disordered non-Fermi liquid metallic fixed point(interacting long-range ordered fixed point) when only the random boson mass vertex is considered. However, in the general case where all disorder vertices are considered, it turns out that there is no stable fixed point and the low-energy RG flows are governed by the large random charge potential vertices especially channels in a `Direct' category with an interplay of an effective Yukawa interaction. Focusing on the physical meanings of the low-energy RG flows, we provide a detailed explanation of the one-loop results. Beyond the one-loop level, we first discuss partial two-loop corrections to the random charge potential vertices. Furthermore, we examine the possibility of different low-energy RG flows compared to that of the one-loop results by considering the two-loop corrections to the random boson mass vertex and, discuss low energy properties in relation to the random singlet phase. For physical properties, we calculate asymptotic forms of the two-point Green's functions and anomalous dimensions of the four superconducting channels in the one-loop level.

Chiral anomaly in noncentrosymmetric systems induced by spin-orbit coupling

The chiral anomaly may be realized in condensed matter systems with pairs of Weyl points. Here we show that the chiral anomaly can be realized in diverse noncentrosymmetric systems even without Weyl point pairs when spin-orbit coupling induces nonzero Berry curvature flux through Fermi surfaces. This motivates the condensed matter chiral anomaly to be interpreted as a Fermi surface property rather than a Weyl point property. The spin-orbit-coupling-induced anomaly reproduces the well-known charge transport properties of the chiral anomaly such as the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and the planar Hall effect in Weyl semimetals. Since it is of spin-orbit coupling origin, it also affects the spin transport and gives rise to anomaly-induced longitudinal spin currents and the magnetic spin Hall effect, which are absent in conventional Weyl semimetals.

Weak-coupling to strong-coupling quantum criticality crossover in a Kitaev quantum spin liquid $α$-RuCl$_3$

We report an unprecedented quantum criticality crossover representing two different universal scaling behaviors in a Kitaev quantum magnetic material $α$-RuCl$_3$. $α$-RuCl$_3$ presents both a symmetry breaking antiferromagnetic order and a long-range entangled topological order of a quantum spin liquid, and thus could be a candidate system for a new universality class involving deconfined fractionalized excitations of the local Z$_2$ fluxes and itinerant Majorana fermions. Theoretical analyses on the inelastic neutron scattering and specific heat results demonstrate that Wilson-Fisher-Yukawa-type 'conventional' weak-coupling quantum criticality in high energy scales crosses over to heavy-fermion-type 'local' strong-coupling one in low energy scales. Our findings provide deep insight on how the quantum criticality evolves in fermion-boson coupled topological systems with different types of deconfined fermions.

Emergent dual holographic description as a non-perturbative generalization of the Wilsonian renormalization group

In holographic duality, dynamics along the emergent extra-dimensional space describes a renormalization group (RG) flow of the corresponding quantum field theory (QFT). Following this idea, we develop an emergent holographic description of a QFT, where not only the information of the RG flow is introduced into an IR holographic dual effective field theory (HDEFT), but also the UV information of the QFT is encoded in the HDEFT through the IR boundary condition. In particular, we argue that this dual holographic construction is self-consistent within the assumption of bulk locality, showing the following two aspects: The solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is given by the IR boundary effective action, and the Ward identity involving the QFT energy-momentum tensor current is satisfied naturally. We discuss the role of the RG $β$-function in the bulk effective dynamics of the metric tensor near a conformally invariant fixed point. We claim that this emergent dual gravity theory generalizes the perturbative Wilsonian RG framework into a non-perturbative way.

Nonlocal transport phenomena in Weyl metals beyond the mesoscopic scale

Axion electrodynamics governs electromagnetic properties of Weyl metals. Although transmission and reflection measurements of light have been proposed to confirm the axion electrodynamics, there are still lack of theoretical proposals for macroscopic nonlocal transport phenomena in Weyl metals. In this paper, we present nonlocal transport phenomena in time reversal symmetry-broken (TRSB) Weyl metals. Solving the axion electrodynamics numerically, we show that such nonlocal transport phenomena arise from the negative longitudinal magneto-resistivity (NLMR), combined with the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the axion electrodynamics. Since this nonlocal transport occurs beyond the mesoscopic scale, we conclude that these nonlocal properties have nothing to do with Fermi arcs, regarded to be clear evidence of the axion electrodynamics in the bulk.

Half metals at intermediate energy scales in Anderson-type insulators

Although quantum phase transitions involved with Anderson localization had been investigated for more than a half century, the role of spin polarization in these metal-insulator transitions has not been clearly addressed as a function of both the range of interactions and energy scales. Based on the Anderson-Hartree-Fock study, we reveal that the spin polarization has nothing to do with Anderson metal-insulator transitions in three dimensions as far as effective interactions between electrons are long-ranged Coulomb type. On the other hand, we find that metal-insulator transitions appear with magnetism in the case of Hubbard-type local interactions. In particular, we show that the multifractal spectrum of spin $\uparrow$ electrons differs from that of spin $\downarrow$ at the high-energy mobility edge, which indicates the existence of spin-dependent universality classes for metal-insulator transitions. One of the most fascinating and rather unexpected results is the appearance of half metals at intermediate energy scales above the high-energy mobility edge in Anderson-type insulators of the Fermi energy, that is, only spin $\uparrow$ electrons are delocalized while spin $\downarrow$ electrons are Anderson-type localized.

Entanglement transfer from quantum matter to classical geometry in an emergent holographic dual description of a scalar field theory

Applying recursive renormalization group transformations to a scalar field theory, we obtain an effective quantum gravity theory with an emergent extra dimension, described by a dual holographic Einstein-Klein-Gordon type action. Here, the dynamics of both the dual order-parameter field and the metric tensor field originate from density-density and energy-momentum tensor-tensor effective interactions, respectively, in the recursive renormalization group transformation, performed approximately in the Gaussian level. This linear approximation in the recursive renormalization group transformation for the gravity sector gives rise to a linearized quantum Einstein-scalar theory along the $z-$directional emergent space. In the large $N$ limit, where $N$ is the flavor number of the original scalar fields, quantum fluctuations of both dynamical metric and dual scalar fields are suppressed, leading to a classical field theory of the Einstein-scalar type in $(D+1)$-spacetime dimensions. We show that this emergent background gravity describes the renormalization group flows of coupling functions in the UV quantum field theory through the extra dimension. More precisely, the IR boundary conditions of the gravity equations correspond to the renormalization group $β$-functions of the quantum field theory, where the infinitesimal distance in the extra-dimensional space is identified with an energy scale for the renormalization group transformation. Finally, we also show that this dual holographic formulation describes quantum entanglement in a geometrical way, encoding the transfer of quantum entanglement from quantum matter to classical gravity in the large $N$ limit. We claim that this entanglement transfer serves as a microscopic foundation for the emergent holographic duality description.

Role of generic scale invariance in a Mott transition from a U(1) spin-liquid insulator to a Landau Fermi-liquid metal

We investigate the role of generic scale invariance in a Mott transition from a U(1) spin-liquid insulator to a Landau Fermi-liquid metal, where there exist massless degrees of freedom in addition to quantum critical fluctuations. Here, the Mott quantum criticality is described by critical charge fluctuations, and additional gapless excitations are U(1) gauge-field fluctuations coupled to a spinon Fermi surface in the spin-liquid state, which turn out to play a central role in the Mott transition. An interesting feature of this problem is that the scaling dimension of effective leading local interactions between critical charge fluctuations differs from that of the coupling constant between U(1) gauge fields and matter-field fluctuations in the presence of a Fermi surface. As a result, there appear dangerously irrelevant operators, which can cause conceptual difficulty in the implementation of renormalization group (RG) transformations. Indeed, we find that the curvature term along the angular direction of the spinon Fermi surface is dangerously irrelevant at this spin-liquid Mott quantum criticality, responsible for divergence of the self-energy correction term in U(1) gauge-field fluctuations. Performing the RG analysis in the one-loop level based on the dimensional regularization method, we reveal that such extremely overdamped dynamics of U(1) gauge-field fluctuations, which originates from the emergent one-dimensional dynamics of spinons, does not cause any renormalization effects to the effective dynamics of both critical charge fluctuations and spinon excitations. However, it turns out that the coupling between U(1) gauge-field fluctuations and both matter-field excitations still persists at this Mott transition, which results in novel mean-field dynamics to explain the nature of the spin-liquid Mott quantum criticality.

Inhomogeneous Kondo destruction by RKKY correlations

The competition between the indirect exchange interaction (IEC) of magnetic impurities in metals and the Kondo effect gives rise to a rich quantum phase diagram, the Doniach Diagram. In disordered metals, both the Kondo temperature and the IEC are widely distributed due to the scattering of the conduction electrons from the impurity potential. Therefore, it is a question of fundamental importance, how this Doniach diagram is modified by the disorder, and if one can still identify separate phases. Recently, it has been investigated the effect of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) correlations on the Kondo effect of two magnetic impurities, renormalizing the Kondo interaction based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation and performing the poor men's renormalization group (RG) analysis with the RKKY-renormalized Kondo coupling. In the present study, we extend this theoretical framework, allowing for different Kondo temperatures of two RKKY-coupled magnetic impurities due to different local exchange couplings and density of states. As a result, we find that the smaller one of the two Kondo temperatures is suppressed more strongly by the RKKY interaction, thereby enhancing their initial inequality. In order to find out if this relevance of inequalities between Kondo temperatures modifies the distribution of the Kondo temperature in a system of a finite density of randomly distributed magnetic impurities, we present an extension of the RKKY coupled Kondo RG equations. We discuss the implication of these results for the interplay between Kondo coupling and RKKY interaction in disordered electron systems and the Doniach diagram in disordered electron systems.

Comparison between renormalization group derived emergent dual holography and string theory based holographic duality

To clarify the mathematical structure of the RG-derived holographic dual field theory, we rewrite the string-theory based conventionally utilized dual holographic effective field theory based on the ADM decomposition of the metric tensor. This comparison leads us to claim that the RG-derived emergent holographic dual field theory takes into account higher-derivative curvature terms with gauge fixing in the string-theory based conventionally utilized Einstein-Klein-Gordon theory, giving rise to the RG flow of the metric tensor beyond the AdS (anti-de Sitter space) geometry. Furthermore, we compare the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the effective IR on-shell action of the string-theory based conventionally utilized dual holographic effective theory with that of the RG-based holographic dual field theory. It turns out that the effective IR on-shell action of the string-theory based dual holography can be identified with the IR boundary effective action of the RG-based emergent holographic dual description, where the Wilsonian RG-transformation procedure may be regarded as an inverse process of the holographic renormalization. This demonstration leads us to propose an effective dual holographic field theory with the diffeomorphism invariance and higher derivative curvature terms, where the IR boundary condition is newly introduced to clarify the deep connection between UV microscopic and IR macroscopic degrees of freedom.

Study of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states by tuning the electron density at the Fermi energy

Magnetic atoms can break the Cooper pairs of superconductors, leading to the formation of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states inside superconducting gaps. Theory predicts that the YSR bound states can be controlled by tuning the electron density at the Fermi energy, but it has not been studied deeply. In this work, we studied the nature of YSR bound states in response to the potential scattering U by tuning the electron density at the Fermi energy. By comparing two systems, Mn-phthalocyanine molecules on Pb(111) and Co atoms on PbSe/Pb(111), we demonstrate that the sign of U can be unambiguously determined by varying the electron density at the Fermi energy. We also show that U competes with the exchange interaction JS in the formation of YSR bound states. Our work provides insights into the interactions between magnetic atoms and superconductors at a fundamental level.

Emergent dual holographic description for interacting Dirac fermions in the large $N$ limit

We derive an effective dual holographic Einstein-Maxwell theory, applying renormalization group transformations to interacting Dirac fermions in a recursive way. In particular, we show how both background metric tensor and U(1) gauge fields become dynamical to describe the renormalization group flows of coupling functions and order parameter fields of the corresponding quantum field theory through natural emergence of an extra-dimensional space, respectively. Finally, we propose a prescription on how to calculate correlation functions in a non-perturbative way, where quantum fluctuations of both metric and gauge fields are frozen to cause a classical field theory of the Einstein-Maxwell type in the large $N$ limit. Here, $N$ is the flavor degeneracy of Dirac fermions. This prescription turns out to coincide with that of the holographic duality conjecture.

Emergent geometry in recursive renormalization group transformations

Holographic duality conjecture has been proposed to be a novel non-perturbative theoretical framework for the description of strongly correlated electrons. However, the duality transformation is not specified to cause ambiguity in the application of this theoretical machinery to condensed matter physics. In this study, we propose a prescription for the holographic duality transformation. Based on recursive renormalization group (RG) transformations, we obtain an effective field theory, which manifests the RG flow of an effective action through the introduction of an extra dimension. Resorting to this prescription, we show that RG equations of all coupling constants are reformulated as emergent geometry with an extra dimension. We claim that the present prescription serves as microscopic foundation for the application of the holographic duality conjecture to condensed matter physics.
