Competition between Kondo and RKKY correlations in the presence of strong randomness

We propose that competition between Kondo and magnetic correlations results in a novel universality class for heavy fermion quantum criticality in the presence of strong randomness. Starting from an Anderson lattice model with disorder, we derive an effective local field theory in the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) approximation, where randomness is introduced into both hybridization and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions. Performing the saddle-point analysis in the U(1) slave-boson representation, we reveal its phase diagram which shows a quantum phase transition from a spin liquid state to a local Fermi liquid phase. In contrast with the clean limit of the Anderson lattice model, the effective hybridization given by holon condensation turns out to vanish, resulting from the zero mean value of the hybridization coupling constant. However, we show that the holon density becomes finite when variance of hybridization is sufficiently larger than that of the RKKY coupling, giving rise to the Kondo effect. On the other hand, when the variance of hybridization becomes smaller than that of the RKKY coupling, the Kondo effect disappears, resulting in a fully symmetric paramagnetic state, adiabatically connected with the spin liquid state of the disordered Heisenberg model. ......

Spin liquids in graphene

We reveal that local interactions in graphene allow novel spin liquids between the semi-metal and antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phases, identified with algebraic spin liquid and Z$_{2}$ spin liquid, respectively. We argue that the algebraic spin liquid can be regarded as the two dimensional realization of one dimensional spin dynamics, where antiferromagnetic correlations show exactly the same power-law dependence as valence bond correlations. Nature of the Z$_{2}$ spin liquid turns out to be $d + i d'$ singlet pairing, but time reversal symmetry is preserved, taking $d + i d'$ in one valley and $d - i d'$ in the other valley. We propose the quantized thermal valley Hall effect as an essential feature of this gapped spin liquid state. Quantum phase transitions among the semi-metal, algebraic spin liquid, and Z$_{2}$ spin liquid are shown to be continuous while the transition from the Z$_{2}$ spin liquid to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator turns out to be the first order. We emphasize that both algebraic spin liquid and $d \pm id'$ Z$_{2}$ spin liquid can be verified by the quantum Monte Carlo simulation, showing the enhanced symmetry in the algebraic spin liquid and the quantized thermal valley Hall effect in the Z$_{2}$ spin liquid.

Nambu-Eliashberg theory for multi-scale quantum criticality : Application to ferromagnetic quantum criticality in the surface of three dimensional topological insulators

We develop an Eliashberg theory for multi-scale quantum criticality, considering ferromagnetic quantum criticality in the surface of three dimensional topological insulators. Although an analysis based on the random phase approximation has been performed for multi-scale quantum criticality, an extension to an Eliashberg framework was claimed to be far from triviality in respect that the self-energy correction beyond the random phase approximation, which originates from scattering with $z = 3$ longitudinal fluctuations, changes the dynamical exponent $z = 2$ in the transverse mode, explicitly demonstrated in nematic quantum criticality. A novel ingredient of the present study is to introduce an anomalous self-energy associated with the spin-flip channel. Such an anomalous self-energy turns out to be essential for self-consistency of the Eliashberg framework in the multi-scale quantum critical point because this off diagonal self-energy cancels the normal self-energy exactly in the low energy limit, preserving the dynamics of both $z = 3$ longitudinal and $z = 2$ transverse modes. This multi-scale quantum criticality is consistent with that in a perturbative analysis for the nematic quantum critical point, where a vertex correction in the fermion bubble diagram cancels a singular contribution due to the self-energy correction, maintaining the $z = 2$ transverse mode. We also claim that this off diagonal self-energy gives rise to an artificial electric field in the energy-momentum space in addition to the Berry curvature. We discuss the role of such an anomalous self-energy in the anomalous Hall conductivity.

Critical particle-hole composites at twice the Fermi wave vector in U(1) spin liquid with a Fermi surface

We find "{\it chiral symmetry breaking}" at finite energies in U(1) spin liquid, corresponding to critical particle-hole composite states with twice of the Fermi momentum (2$k_{F}$). We investigate this Fermi surface problem based on the Nambu-Eliashberg theory, where the off diagonal pairing self-energy is introduced to catch the Aslamasov-Larkin vertex correction. This approach is quite parallel with the case of superconductivity, where such Aslamasov-Larkin quantum corrections in the particle-particle channel are well known to be responsible for superconducting instability, formulated as the Nambu-Eliashberg theory in an elegant way. We obtain the pairing self-energy, which vanishes at zero energy but displays the same power law dependence for frequency as the normal Eliashberg self-energy. As a result, even the pairing self-energy correction does not modify the Eliashberg dynamics without the Nambu spinor representation, where thermodynamics is described by the typical $z = 3$ scaling free energy. We discuss physical implication of the anomalous self-energy identical to the conventional Eliashberg normal self-energy, focusing on thermodynamics.

Probing surface states of topological insulator: Kondo effect and Friedel oscillation under magnetic field

We address three issues on the role of magnetic impurities in the surface state of a three dimensional topological insulator. First, we prove that the Kondo effect of the topological surface is essentially the same as that of the graphene surface, demonstrating that an effective impurity action of the topological surface coincides with that of the graphene surface. Second, we study the role of the $z$-directional magnetic field ($h$) in the Kondo effect, and show that the peak splitting in the impurity local density of states does not follow the $h$-linear behavior, the typical physics in the soft-gap Kondo model. We discuss that the origin is spin locking in the helical surface. Third, we examine the Friedel oscillation around the magnetic impurity. It turns out that the pattern of Friedel oscillation in the helical surface is identical to that of the graphene surface, displaying the inverse-square behavior $\sim r^{-2}$ if the inter-valley scattering is not introduced in the graphene case. However, introduction of the magnetic field leads the electron density of states from the inverse-square physics to the inverse behavior $\sim r^{-1}$ in the topological insulator's surface while it still remains as $\sim r^{-2}$ in the graphene Kondo effect. We discuss that this originates from spin flipping induced by magnetic field.

Novel duality in disorder driven local quantum criticality

We find that competition between random Kondo and random magnetic correlations results in a quantum phase transition from a local Fermi liquid to a spin liquid. The local charge susceptibility turns out to have exactly the same critical exponent as the local spin susceptibility, suggesting novel duality between the Kondo singlet phase and the critical local moment state beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson symmetry breaking framework. This leads us to propose an enhanced symmetry at the local quantum critical point, described by an O(4) vector for spin and charge. The symmetry enhancement serves mechanism of electron fractionalization in critical impurity dynamics, where such fractionalized excitations are identified with topological excitations.

Superconductivity from a non-Fermi liquid metal : Kondo fluctuation mechanism in the slave-fermion theory

We find new mechanism of superconductivity beyond the spin-fluctuation theory, the standard model for unconventional superconductivity in the weak coupling approach, where Kondo fluctuations result in multi-gap superconductivity around an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point of the slave-fermion theory. Fingerprints of the hybridization mechanism are two kinds of resonance modes in not only spin but also charge fluctuations, originating from $d-wave$ pairing of conduction electrons and spinless holons, respectively, thus differentiated from the spin-fluctuation mechanism. We show that the ratio between each superconducting gap for conduction electrons $Δ_{c}$ and holons $Δ_{f}$ and the transition temperature $T_{c}$ is $2Δ_{c} / T_{c} \sim 9$ and $2Δ_{f} / T_{c} \sim \mathcal{O}(10^{-1})$, remarkably consistent with $CeCoIn_{5}$.

The thermopower as a signature of quantum criticality in heavy fermions

We present a series of arguments showing that the Seebeck coefficient can be used as a decisive experiment to characterize the nature of the quantum critical point (QCP) in heavy fermion compounds. Being reactive almost exclusively to the presence of delocalized entropic carriers, the Seebeck coefficient shows a drastic collapse at the Kondo breakdown QCP, as the reconstruction of the Fermi surface takes place. In contrast, around a Spin Density Wave (SDW) QCP, the Seebeck coefficient is broadly symmetric. We discuss the possibility of a change of sign at the QCP, the characteristic variation of $| S / T | $ with temperature and external parameter, as well as the capacity of the Seebeck coefficient to distinguish between localized and itinerant anti-ferromagnetism (AF). Suggestions of experiments are given in the case of four non conventional compounds : YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, Ce(Mn)In$_5$, CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ and URu$_2$Si$_2$.

To probe quantum criticality with scanning tunneling spectroscopy

We investigate the role of quantum coherence in tunneling conductance, where quantum criticality turns out to suppress Fano resonance. Based on the nonequilibrium noncrossing approximation, we show that the linear tunneling conductance exhibits weak Fano line-shape with sharp cusp at zero energy in the multichannel Kondo effect, resulting from incoherence associated with quantum criticality of impurity dynamics. In particular, shift of the peak position in the Fano resonance is predicted not to occur for the multichannel Kondo effect, distinguished from the Fermi liquid theory in the single channel Kondo effect.

Non-Fermi liquid from confinement in doped Mott insulators

A phenomenological description for confinement of fractionalized excitations is proposed in the gauge theory approach for doped Mott insulators. Introducing the Polyakov-loop parameter into an SU(2) gauge theory for the t-J model, we show that electron excitations emerge below the so-called coherence temperature, resulting from confinement of spinons and holons via the formation of the Polyakov loop. Remarkably, such confined electrons turn out to exhibit non-Fermi liquid physics without quantum criticality, yielding the electric resistivity in quantitative agreement with experimental data. The Higgs phase is not allowed due to confinement, suggesting a possible novel mechanism of superconductivity in the strong coupling approach.

Superconductivity from purely repulsive interactions in the strong coupling approach : Application of the SU(2) slave-rotor theory to the Hubbard model

We propose a mechanism of superconductivity from purely repulsive interactions in the strong coupling regime, where the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) mechanism such as the spin-fluctuation approach is difficult to apply. Based on the SU(2) slave-rotor representation of the Hubbard model, we find that the single energy scale for the amplitude formation of Cooper pairs and their phase coherence is separated into two energy scales, allowing the so called pseudogap state where such Cooper pairs are coherent locally but not globally, interpreted as realization of the density-phase uncertainty principle. This superconducting state shows the temperature-linear decreasing ratio of superfluid weight, resulting from strong phase fluctuations.

z = 3 antiferromagnetic quantum critical point : U(1) slave-fermion theory of Anderson lattice model

We find the dynamical exponent $z = 3$ antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP) in the heavy fermion quantum transition beyond the standard framework of the Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory with $z = 2$. Based on the U(1) slave-fermion representation of the Anderson lattice model, we show the continuous transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy fermion Fermi liquid, where the heavy fermion phase consists of two fluids, differentiated from the slave-boson theory. Thermodynamics and transport of the $z = 3$ AF QCP are shown to be consistent with the well known non-Fermi liquid physics such as the divergent Grüneisen ratio with an exponent 2/3 and temperature-linear resistivity. In particular, the uniform spin susceptibility turns out to diverge with an exponent 2/3, the hallmark of the $z = 3$ AF QCP described by deconfined bosonic spinons.

A slave-fermion gauge-theory approach of the t-J model: Doping-induced complex magnetic structure and Z$_{2}$ spin-gapped anomalous metal in an antiferromagnetic doped Mott insulator

We reinvestigate a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator based on the slave-fermion approach of the t-J model, where antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and doped holes are described by bosonic spinons and fermionic holons, respectively. Earlier studies have shown that an effective field theory for the doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator is given by a non-relativistic fermion (holon) U(1) gauge theory for charge dynamics and a relativistic boson (spinon) U(1) gauge theory for spin dynamics, thus allowing an anomalous metallic phase where bosonic spinons are gapped away from an antiferromagnetic state, analogous to the U(1) spin liquid phase in the slave-boson approach of the t-J model. We argue that the emergent U(1) gauge structure in this approach is based on a simplified picture for antiferromagnetic correlations. Considering that dynamics of doped holes frustrates a collinear antiferromagnetic spin configuration, we show that doped holes enhance ferromagnetic spin correlations and result in a complex magnetic structure. The presence of such a complex spin texture reduces the U(1) gauge structure down to Z$_{2}$, thus a different effective field theory results for the spin-gapped non-Fermi liquid metal at low temperatures because there are no gapless U(1) gauge fluctuations.

Fermion zero mode and superfluid weight

We propose one possible mechanism for deconfinement based on an SU(2) slave-boson theory. Resorting to an effective field theory approach, we show that introduction of an isospin interaction potential gives rise to a fermion zero mode in an instanton-hedgehog configuration. As a result, meron-type vortices are allowed. We demonstrate how emergence of such vortices results in the doping-independent decreasing ratio of superfluid weight.

Fermionization for charge degrees of freedom and bosonization of spin degrees of freedom in the SU(2) slave-boson theory

Fermionizing the charge sector and bosonizing the spin part in the SU(2) slave-boson theory, we derive an effective field theory for dynamics of doped holes in the antiferromagnetically correlated spin background, where spin fluctuations are described by an SO(5) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory while dynamics of doped holes is characterized by QED$_{3}$ with a chemical potential term. An important feature of our effective field theory is the coupling term between valance bond fluctuations and doped holes. Considering that valance bond fluctuations are deeply related with monopole excitations of staggered U(1) gauge fields in the bosonic field theory for spin fluctuations, we demonstrate that hole dynamics helps deconfinement of bosonic spinons near the quantum critical point of the SO(5) WZW theory. We solve this effective field theory in the Eliashberg framework, and find non-Fermi liquid physics in thermodynamics and transport, where $z = 3$ criticality with dynamical exponent $z$ plays an important role for hole dynamics. We discuss validity of our field theory, applying it to a doped spin chain and comparing it with the slave-fermion framework. Furthermore, we discuss instability of the anomalous metallic phase against superconductivity and density waves of doped holes, resulting from competition between gauge and valance bond fluctuations.

Kondo physics in the algebraic spin liquid

We study Kondo physics in the algebraic spin liquid, recently proposed to describe $ZnCu_{3}(OH)_{6}Cl_{2}$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 117205 (2007)]. Although spin dynamics of the algebraic spin liquid is described by massless Dirac fermions, this problem differs from the Pseudogap Kondo model, because the bulk physics in the algebraic spin liquid is governed by an interacting fixed point where well-defined quasiparticle excitations are not allowed. Considering an effective bulk model characterized by an anomalous critical exponent, we derive an effective impurity action in the slave-boson context. Performing the large-$N_σ$ analysis with a spin index $N_σ$, we find an impurity quantum phase transition from a decoupled local-moment state to a Kondo-screened phase. We evaluate the impurity spin susceptibility and specific heat coefficient at zero temperature, and find that such responses follow power-law dependencies due to the anomalous exponent of the algebraic spin liquid. Our main finding is that the Wilson's ratio for the magnetic impurity depends strongly on the critical exponent in the zero temperature limit. We propose that the Wilson's ratio for the magnetic impurity may be one possible probe to reveal criticality of the bulk system.

Spin-gapped incoherent metal with preformed pairing in the doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator

We investigate how the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator evolves into the d-wave BCS superconductor through hole doping. Allowing spin fluctuations in the strong coupling approach, we find a spin-gapped incoherent metal with preformed pairing as an intermediate phase between the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator and d-wave superconductor. This non-Fermi liquid metal is identified with an infrared stable fixed point in the spin-decomposition gauge theory, analogous to the spin liquid insulator in the slave-boson gauge theory. We consider the single particle spectrum and dynamical spin susceptibility in the anomalous metallic phase, and discuss physical implications.
