Finding Density Functionals with Machine Learning

Machine learning is used to approximate density functionals. For the model problem of the kinetic energy of non-interacting fermions in 1d, mean absolute errors below 1 kcal/mol on test densities similar to the training set are reached with fewer than 100 training densities. A predictor identifies if a test density is within the interpolation region. Via principal component analysis, a projected functional derivative finds highly accurate self-consistent densities. Challenges for application of our method to real electronic structure problems are discussed.

The effect of cusps in time-dependent quantum mechanics

Spatial cusps in initial wavefunctions can lead to non-analytic behavior in time. We suggest a method for calculating the short-time behavior in such situations. For these cases, the density does not match its Taylor-expansion in time, but the Runge-Gross proof of time-dependent density functional theory still holds, as it requires only the potential to be time-analytic.

Kondo effect given exactly by density functional theory

Transport through an Anderson junction (two macroscopic electrodes coupled to an Anderson impurity) is dominated by a Kondo peak in the spectral function at zero temperature. The exact single-particle Kohn-Sham potential of density functional theory reproduces the linear transport exactly, despite the lack of a Kondo peak in its spectral function. Using Bethe ansatz techniques, we calculate this potential exactly for all coupling strengths, including the cross-over from mean-field behavior to charge quantization caused by the derivative discontinuity. A simple and accurate interpolation formula is also given.

Electronic structure via potential functional approximations

The universal functional of Hohenberg-Kohn is given as a coupling-constant integral over the density as a functional of the potential. Conditions are derived under which potential-functional approximations are variational. Construction via this method and imposition of these conditions are shown to greatly improve the accuracy of the non-interacting kinetic energy needed for orbital-free Kohn-Sham calculations.

Avoiding Unbound Anions in Density Functional Calculations

Converged approximate density functional calculations usually do not bind anions, due to large self-interaction error. But Hartree-Fock calculations have no such prob- lem, producing negative HOMO energies. A recently proposed scheme for calculating DFT energies on HF densities is shown to work very well for molecules, better than the common practice of restricting the basis set, except for cases like CN, where the HF density is too inaccurate due to spin contamination.

The Role of Exact Conditions in TDDFT

This chapter is devoted to exact conditions in time-dependent density functional theory. Many conditions have been derived for the exact ground-state density functional, and several have played crucial roles in the construction of popular approximations. We believe that the reliability of the most fundamental approximation of any density functional theory, the local density approximation (LDA), is due to the exact conditions that it satisfies. Improved approximations should satisfy at least those conditions that LDA satisfies, plus others. (Which others is part of the art of functional approximation). In the time-dependent case, as we shall see, the adiabatic LDA (ALDA) plays the same role as LDA in the ground-state case, as it satisfies many exact conditions. But we do not have a generally applicable improvement beyond ALDA that includes nonlocality in time. For TDDFT, we have a surfeit of exact conditions, but that only makes finding those that are useful to impose an even more demanding task.

On the density-potential mapping in time-dependent density functional theory

The key questions of uniqueness and existence in time-dependent density functional theory are usually formulated only for potentials and densities that are analytic in time. Simple examples, standard in quantum mechanics, lead however to non-analyticities. We reformulate these questions in terms of a non-linear Schrödinger equation with a potential that depends non-locally on the wavefunction.

Ionization potentials in the limit of large atomic number

By extrapolating the energies of non-relativistic atoms and their ions with up to 3000 electrons within Kohn-Sham density functional theory, we find that the ionization potential remains finite and increases across a row, even as $Z\rightarrow\infty$. The local density approximation becomes chemically accurate (and possibly exact) in some cases. Extended Thomas-Fermi theory matches the shell-average of both the ionization potential and density change. Exact results are given in the limit of weak electron-electron repulsion.

Leading corrections to local approximations

For the kinetic energy of 1d model finite systems the leading corrections to local approximations as a functional of the potential are derived using semiclassical methods. The corrections are simple, non-local functionals of the potential. Turning points produce quantum oscillations leading to energy corrections, which are completely different from the gradient corrections that occur in bulk systems with slowly-varying densities. Approximations that include quantum corrections are typically much more accurate than their local analogs. The consequences for density functional theory are discussed.

Adiabatic Connection for Strictly-Correlated Electrons

Modern density functional theory (DFT) calculations employ the Kohn-Sham (KS) system of non-interacting electrons as a reference, with all complications buried in the exchange-correlation energy (Exc). The adiabatic connection formula gives an exact expression for Exc. We consider DFT calculations that instead employ a reference of strictly-correlated electrons. We define a "decorrelation energy" that relates this reference to the real system, and derive the corresponding adiabatic connection formula. We illustrate this theory in three situations, namely the uniform electron gas, Hooke's atom, and the stretched hydrogen molecule. The adiabatic connection for strictly-correlated electrons provides an alternative perspective for understanding density functional theory and constructing approximate functionals.

Partition Density Functional Theory

Partition density functional theory is a formally exact procedure for calculating molecular properties from Kohn-Sham calculations on isolated fragments, interacting via a global partition potential that is a functional of the fragment densities. An example is given and consequences discussed.

Must Kohn-Sham Oscillator Strengths be Accurate at Threshold?

The exact ground-state Kohn-Sham(KS) potential for the helium atom is known from accurate wavefunction calculations of the ground-state density. The threshold for photoabsorption from this potential matches the physical system exactly. By carefully studying its absorption spectrum, we show the answer to the title question is no. To address this problem in detail, we generate a highly accurate simple fit of a two-electron spectrum near the threshold, and apply the method to both the experimental spectrum and that of the exact ground-state Kohn-Sham potential.

Potential Scaling in Density Functional Theory

Density scaling has a rich history in density functional theory, providing exact conditions for use in the construction of ever more accurate approximations to the unknown exchange-correlation functional. We define a conjugate potential scaling for each density scaling. This provides exact relations on various important density functionals, in particular, relating functionals evaluated on exact densities of different potentials. We illustrate these conditions on the two- and four-electron ion series.

Adiabatic Connection in the Low-Density Limit

In density functional theory (DFT), the exchange-correlation functional can be exactly expressed by the adiabatic connection integral. It has been noticed that as lambda goes to infinity, the lambda^(-1) term in the expansion of W(lambda) vanishes. We provide a simple but rigorous derivation to this exact condition in this work. We propose a simple parametric form for the integrand, satisfying this condition, and show that it is highly accurate for weakly-correlated two-electron systems.

Non-empirical 'derivation' of B88 exchange functional

The B88 exchange energy density functional (created by Becke in 1988) is a crucial part of the most popular density functional in use today, B3LYP. B88 contains one empirical parameter which was fitted to Hartree-Fock exchange energies for the noble gas atoms. We show how local approximations to exchange become relatively exact under a very specific approach to the limit of large numbers, but that the usual gradient expansion does not. The leading corrections can be captured by generalized gradient approximations, producing a non-empirical derivation of the parameter in B88.

Time-dependent density functional theory of high excitations: To infinity, and beyond

We review the theoretical background for obtaining both quantum defects and scattering phase shifts from time-dependent density functional theory. The quantum defect on the negative energy side of the spectrum and the phase shift on the positive energy side merge continuously at E=0, allowing both to be found by the same method. We illustrate with simple one-dimensional examples: the spherical well and the delta well potential. As an example of a real system, we study in detail elastic electron scattering from the He${}^{+}$ ion. We show how the results are influenced by different approximations to the unknown components in (time-dependent) density functional theory: the ground state exchange-correlation potential and time-dependent kernel. We also revisit our previously obtained results for $e$-H scattering. Our results are remarkably accurate in may cases, but fail qualitatively in others.

Charge Transfer in Partition Theory

The recently proposed Partition Theory (PT) [J.Phys.Chem.A 111, 2229 (2007)] is illustrated on a simple one-dimensional model of a heteronuclear diatomic molecule. It is shown that a sharp definition for the charge of molecular fragments emerges from PT, and that the ensuing population analysis can be used to study how charge redistributes during dissociation and the implications of that redistribution for the dipole moment. Interpreting small differences between the isolated parts' ionization potentials as due to environmental inhomogeneities, we gain insight into how electron localization takes place in H2+ as the molecule dissociates. Furthermore, by studying the preservation of the shapes of the parts as different parameters of the model are varied, we address the issue of transferability of the parts. We find good transferability within the chemically meaningful parameter regime, raising hopes that PT will prove useful in chemical applications.

Exact condition on the Kohn-Sham kinetic energy, and modern parametrization of the Thomas-Fermi density

We study the asymptotic expansion of the neutral-atom energy as the atomic number Z goes to infinity, presenting a new method to extract the coefficients from oscillating numerical data. We find that recovery of the correct expansion is an exact condition on the Kohn-Sham kinetic energy that is important for the accuracy of approximate kinetic energy functionals for atoms, molecules and solids, when evaluated on a Kohn-Sham density. For example, this determines the small gradient limit of any generalized gradient approximation, and conflicts somewhat with the standard gradient expansion. Tests are performed on atoms, molecules, and jellium clusters. We also give a modern, highly accurate parametrization of the Thomas-Fermi density of neutral atoms.
