4K Image Super-Resolution on Mobile NPUs: Mobile AI 2026 Challenge Report

Image super-resolution is widely used on mobile devices for upscaling various types of image data. This creates a need for efficient deep learning-based models that are not only performant but can also be deployed on neural processing units (NPUs) present in the majority of mobile and IoT chipsets. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design fast solutions that can upsample images from Full HD to 4K resolution while running on popular mobile NPUs from Qualcomm and MediaTek. For this, the participants were provided with the DIV2K dataset and trained models to do an efficient 3X image upscaling. The competition had two tracks: in the first track, the models had to be fully quantized (INT8), and the runtime of all models was evaluated on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 NPU. In the second track, the participants were developing floating-point solutions that were evaluated on the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 NPU. Top solutions proposed in this challenge are able to reconstruct 4K images under 5 milliseconds while reaching a PSNR score of 30 dB. A comprehensive description of the models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

Efficient Image Denoising on Smartphone GPUs: Mobile AI 2026 Challenge Report

Image denoising is a fundamental problem in mobile photography. Despite a large number of solutions proposed for this task, the majority of them are trained on synthetically produced noisy images, and are additionally too computationally heavy for processing full-resolution images on mobile devices. This creates a need for efficient deep learning-based models that are not only performant but can also be deployed on constrained mobile hardware. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design fast solutions that can denoise Full HD resolution photos while running on popular smartphone GPUs from Qualcomm and Arm. For this, the participants were provided with a large-scale dataset consisting of noisy-clean image pairs captured in the wild. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Dimensity 9500 chipsets with the Adreno and Mali GPUs, respectively. Top solutions proposed in this challenge are able to perform high-quality image denoising under 100 milliseconds on both platforms while reaching a PSNR score of over 37 dB. A comprehensive description of the models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

The Tenth NTIRE 2025 Efficient Super-Resolution Challenge Report

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the NTIRE 2025 Challenge on Single-Image Efficient Super-Resolution (ESR). The challenge aimed to advance the development of deep models that optimize key computational metrics, i.e., runtime, parameters, and FLOPs, while achieving a PSNR of at least 26.90 dB on the $\operatorname{DIV2K\_LSDIR\_valid}$ dataset and 26.99 dB on the $\operatorname{DIV2K\_LSDIR\_test}$ dataset. A robust participation saw \textbf{244} registered entrants, with \textbf{43} teams submitting valid entries. This report meticulously analyzes these methods and results, emphasizing groundbreaking advancements in state-of-the-art single-image ESR techniques. The analysis highlights innovative approaches and establishes benchmarks for future research in the field.

NTIRE 2024 Quality Assessment of AI-Generated Content Challenge

This paper reports on the NTIRE 2024 Quality Assessment of AI-Generated Content Challenge, which will be held in conjunction with the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement Workshop (NTIRE) at CVPR 2024. This challenge is to address a major challenge in the field of image and video processing, namely, Image Quality Assessment (IQA) and Video Quality Assessment (VQA) for AI-Generated Content (AIGC). The challenge is divided into the image track and the video track. The image track uses the AIGIQA-20K, which contains 20,000 AI-Generated Images (AIGIs) generated by 15 popular generative models. The image track has a total of 318 registered participants. A total of 1,646 submissions are received in the development phase, and 221 submissions are received in the test phase. Finally, 16 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. The video track uses the T2VQA-DB, which contains 10,000 AI-Generated Videos (AIGVs) generated by 9 popular Text-to-Video (T2V) models. A total of 196 participants have registered in the video track. A total of 991 submissions are received in the development phase, and 185 submissions are received in the test phase. Finally, 12 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. Some methods have achieved better results than baseline methods, and the winning methods in both tracks have demonstrated superior prediction performance on AIGC.

Real-Time 4K Super-Resolution of Compressed AVIF Images. AIS 2024 Challenge Survey

This paper introduces a novel benchmark as part of the AIS 2024 Real-Time Image Super-Resolution (RTSR) Challenge, which aims to upscale compressed images from 540p to 4K resolution (4x factor) in real-time on commercial GPUs. For this, we use a diverse test set containing a variety of 4K images ranging from digital art to gaming and photography. The images are compressed using the modern AVIF codec, instead of JPEG. All the proposed methods improve PSNR fidelity over Lanczos interpolation, and process images under 10ms. Out of the 160 participants, 25 teams submitted their code and models. The solutions present novel designs tailored for memory-efficiency and runtime on edge devices. This survey describes the best solutions for real-time SR of compressed high-resolution images.

Efficient and Accurate Quantized Image Super-Resolution on Mobile NPUs, Mobile AI & AIM 2022 challenge: Report

Image super-resolution is a common task on mobile and IoT devices, where one often needs to upscale and enhance low-resolution images and video frames. While numerous solutions have been proposed for this problem in the past, they are usually not compatible with low-power mobile NPUs having many computational and memory constraints. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design an efficient quantized image super-resolution solution that can demonstrate a real-time performance on mobile NPUs. The participants were provided with the DIV2K dataset and trained INT8 models to do a high-quality 3X image upscaling. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Synaptics VS680 Smart Home board with a dedicated edge NPU capable of accelerating quantized neural networks. All proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU, demonstrating an up to 60 FPS rate when reconstructing Full HD resolution images. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.
