The small mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the lepton asymmetry

We present the correlation of low energy CP phases, both Dirac and Majorana, and the lepton asymmetry for the baryon asymmetry in the universe, with a certain class of Yukawa matrices that consist of two right-handed neutrinos and include one texture zero in themselves. For cases in which the amount of the lepton asymmetry $Y_L$ turns out to be proportional to $θ_{13}^2$, we consider the relation between two types of CP phases and the relation of $Y_L$ versus the Jarlskog invariant or the amplitude of neutrinoless double beta decay as $θ_{13}$ varies.

Minimal seesaw model with tri/bi-maximal mixing and leptogenesis

We examine minimal seesaw mechanism in which the masses of light neutrinos are described with tri/bi-maximal mixing in the basis where the charged-lepton Yukawa matrix and heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrix are diagonal. We search for all possible Dirac mass textures which contain at least one zero entry in $3 \times 2$ matrix and evaluate the corresponding lepton asymmetries. We present the baryon asymmetry in terms of a single low energy unknown, a Majorana CP phase to be clued from neutrinoless double beta decay.

Leptogenesis and Bi-Unitary Parametrization of Neutrino Yukawa Matrix

We analyze the neutrino Yukawa matrix by considering three constraints: the out-of-equilibrium condition of lepton number violating process responsible for leptogenesis, the upper bound of branching ratio of lepton flavor violating decay, and the prediction of large mixing angles using the see-saw mechanism. In a certain parametrization with bi-unitary transformation, it is shown that the structure which satisfies the constraints can be characterized by only seven types of Yukawa matrices. The constraint of the branching ratio of LFV turns out as a redundant one after applying other two constraints. We propose that this parametrization can be the framework in which the CP asymmetry of lepton number violating process can be predicted in terms of observable neutrino parameters at low energy, if necessary, under assumptions following from a theory with additional symmetries. There is an appealing model of neutrino Yukawa matrix considering the CP asymmetry for leptogenesis and the theoretical motivation to reduce the number of free parameters.

Leptogenesis and Low-energy Observables

We relate leptogenesis in a class of theories to low-energy experimental observables: quark and lepton masses and mixings. With reasonable assumptions motivated by grand unification, one can show that the CP-asymmetry parameter takes a universal form. Furthermore the dilution mass is related to the light neutrino masses. Overall, these models offer a natural explanation for a lepton asymmetry in the early universe.

Discrete Flavor Symmetries and Mass Matrix Textures

We show how introducing discrete Abelian flavor symmetries can produce texture zeros in the fermion mass matrices, while preserving the correct relationships with the low-energy data on quark and lepton masses. We outline a procedure for defining texture zeros as suppressed entries in Yukawa matrices. These texture zeros can account for the coexistence of the observed large mixing in atmospheric neutrino oscillations with a hierarchy in the neutrino masses, and offer the possibility of alignment of the quark and squark mass matrices, and thus giving a solution to the supersymmetric flavor problem. A requirement that the flavor symmetry commutes with the SU(5) grand unified group can be used to explain the lepton mass hierarchies as well as the neutrino parameters, including the large mixing observed in the atmospheric neutrino data. We present one such model that yields a large atmospheric neutrino mixing angle, as well as a solar neutrino mixing angle of order $λ\simeq 0.22$.

Anomaly-Free Flavor Symmetry and Neutrino Anarchy

We show that one can describe the quark and lepton masses with a single anomaly-free U(1) flavor symmetry provided a single order one parameter is enhanced by roughly 4-5. The flavor symmetry can be seen to arise from inside the $E_6$ symmetry group in such a way that it commutes with the SU(5) grand unified gauge group. The scenario does not distinguish between the left-handed lepton doublets and hence is a model of neutrino anarchy. It can therefore account for the large mixing observed in atmospheric neutrino experiments and predicts that the solar neutrino oscillation data is consistent with the large mixing angle solution of matter-enhanced oscillations.

Quark and Lepton Masses from a {\boldmath $U(1)\times Z_2$} Flavor Symmetry

We show that solutions for the masses and mixings of the quarks and leptons based on a $U(1)\times Z_2$ horizontal symmetry are possible. The seesaw mechanism is shown to work consistently in the presence of the discrete symmetry. The discrete symmetry results in the phenomenologically useful suppressions of elements of the Yukawa matrices. The quark and lepton masses, the CKM mixing angles, and the neutrino mixing angles are accomodated at the order of magnitude level.
