Periods and nonvanishing of central L-values for GL(2n)

Let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of PGL($2n$) over a number field $F$, and $η$ the quadratic idele class character attached to a quadratic extension $E/F$. Guo and Jacquet conjectured a relation between the nonvanishing of $L(1/2,π)L(1/2, π\otimes η)$ for $π$ of symplectic type and the nonvanishing of certain GL($n,E$) periods. When $n=1$, this specializes to a well-known result of Waldspurger. We prove this conjecture, and related global results, under some local hypotheses using a simple relative trace formula. We then apply these global results to obtain local results on distinguished supercuspidal representations, which partially establish a conjecture of Prasad and Takloo-Bighash.

Distinguishing finite group characters and refined local-global phenomena

Serre obtained a sharp bound on how often two irreducible degree $n$ complex characters of a finite group can agree, which tells us how many local factors determine an Artin $L$-function. We consider the more delicate question of finding a sharp bound when these objects are primitive, and answer these questions for $n=2,3$. This provides some insight on refined strong multiplicity one phenomena for automorphic representations of GL$(n)$. For general $n$, we also answer the character question for the families PSL$(2,q)$ and SL$(2,q)$.

Test vectors and central L-values for GL(2)

We determine local test vectors for Waldspurger functionals for GL(2), in the case where both the representation of GL(2) and the character of the degree two extension are ramified, with certain restrictions. We use this to obtain an explicit version of Waldspurger's formula relating twisted central L-values of automorphic representations on GL(2) with certain toric period integrals. As a consequence, we generalize an average value formula of Feigon and Whitehouse, and obtain some nonvanishing results.

Refined dimensions of cusp forms, and equidistribution and bias of signs

We refine known dimension formulas for spaces of cusp forms of squarefree level, determining the dimension of subspaces generated by newforms both with prescribed global root numbers and with prescribed local signs of Atkin-Lehner operators. This yields precise results on the distribution of signs of global functional equations and sign patterns of Atkin-Lehner eigenvalues, refining and generalizing earlier results of Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak. In particular, we exhibit a strict bias towards root number +1 and a phenomenon that sign patterns are biased in the weight but perfectly equidistributed in the level. Another consequence is lower bounds on the number of Galois orbits.

Strong local-global phenomena for Galois and automorphic representations

Many results are known regarding how much local information is required to determine a global object, such as a modular form, or a Galois or automorphic representation. We survey some things that are known and expected, and then explain recent joint work with Dinakar Ramakrishnan about comparing degree 2 Artin and automorphic representations which a priori may not correspond at certain infinite sets of places.

Distinguishing graphs with zeta functions and generalized spectra

Conjecturally, almost all graphs are determined by their spectra. This problem has also been studied for variants such as the spectra of the Laplacian and signless Laplacian. Here we consider the problem of determining graphs with Ihara and Bartholdi zeta functions, which are also computable in polynomial time. These zeta functions are geometrically motivated, but can be viewed as certain generalizations of characteristic polynomials. After discussing some graph properties determined by zeta functions, we show that large classes of cospectral graphs can be distinguished with zeta functions and enumerate graphs distinguished by zeta functions on $\le 11$ vertices. This leads us to conjecture that almost all graphs which are not determined by their spectrum are determined by zeta functions. Along the way, we make some observations about the usual types of spectra and disprove a conjecture of Setyadi and Storm about Ihara zeta functions determining degree sequences.

A relative trace formula for a compact Riemann surface

We study a relative trace formula for a compact Riemann surface with respect to a closed geodesic $C$. This can be expressed as a relation between the period spectrum and the ortholength spectrum of $C$. This provides a new proof of asymptotic results for both the periods of Laplacian eigenforms along $C$ as well estimates on the lengths of geodesic segments which start and end orthogonally on $C$. Variant trace formulas also lead to several simultaneous nonvanishing results for different periods.

A comparison of automorphic and Artin L-series of GL(2)-type agreeing at degree one primes

Let $F/k$ be a cyclic extension of number fields of prime degree. Let $ρ$ be an irreducible $2$-dimensional representation of Artin type of the absolute Galois group of $F$, and $π$ a cuspidal automorphic representation of GL$_2(\mathbb A_F)$, such that the $L$-functions $L(s,ρ_v)$ and $L(s,π_v)$ agree at all (but finitely many of) the places $v$ of degree one over $k$. We prove in this case that we have the global identity $L(s,ρ)=L(s,π)$, with $ρ_v \leftrightarrow π_v$ being given by the local Langlands correspondence at all $v$. In particular, $π$ is tempered and $L(s,ρ)$ is entire.

How often should you clean your room?

We introduce and study a combinatorial optimization problem motivated by the question in the title. In the simple case where you use all objects in your room equally often, we investigate asymptotics of the optimal time to clean up in terms of the number of objects in your room. In particular, we prove a logarithmic upper bound, solve an approximate version of this problem, and conjecture a precise logarithmic asymptotic.

Non-unique factorization and principalization in number fields

We give a precise description of how the class group of a number field measures the failure of unique factorization in its ring of integers. Specifically, following ideas of Kummer, we determine the structure of all irreducible factorizations of an element in the ring of integers of a number field, and give a combinatorial description for the number of such factorizations. In certain cases, we show how quadratic forms can explicitly provide all such factorizations.

Central L-values and periods for GL(2)

We give an exposition of central value formulas for twisted L-functions for GL(2) in terms of compact periods, with a focus on explaining an approach via the relative trace formula and joint work of the author with David Whitehouse.

A Symplectic Case of Artin's Conjecture

Let K/F be an arbitrary Galois extension of number fields and r be a representation of Gal(K/F) into GSp(4,C). Let E_16 be the elemetary abelian group of order 16 and C_5 the cyclic group of order 5. If the image of r in the projective space PGSp(4,C) is isomorphic to the semidirect product of E_16 by C_5, then we show r satisfies Artin's conjecture by proving r corresponds to an automorphic representation. A specific case is given where r is primitive, so Artin's conjecture does not follow from previous results.
