Search for Vector-mediated Dark Matter at the LHC with Forward Proton Tagging

We investigate the production of fermionic dark matter $χ$ via $pp \to pγp \to p j χ\barχX$ mediated by a leptophobic spin-1 particle, where one of the protons remains intact and is tagged by forward proton detectors. We find that the masses of $χ$ and the mediator $Z'$ are severely constrained when $Z'$ interacts with $χ$ and quarks through the vector couplings. We show that dark matter searches in this production channel are sensitive to a mediator mass $m_{Z'} \lesssim 1.4~\mathrm{TeV}$ at 14 TeV at the LHC with an integrated luminosity $L_{\rm{int}} = 3000~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The lower mass bound on the dark matter is $m_χ\simeq 550~\mathrm{GeV}$ at the mediator mass $m_{Z'}=1.2~\mathrm{TeV}$.

Unitary inflaton as decaying dark matter

We consider the inflation model of a singlet scalar field (sigma field) with both quadratic and linear non-minimal couplings where unitarity is ensured up to the Planck scale. We assume that a $Z_2$ symmetry for the sigma field is respected by the scalar potential in Jordan frame but it is broken explicitly by the linear non-minimal coupling due to quantum gravity. We discuss the impacts of the linear non-minimal coupling on various dynamics from inflation to low energy, such as a sizable tensor-to-scalar ratio, a novel reheating process with quartic potential dominance, and suppressed physical parameters in the low energy, etc. In particular, the linear non-minimal coupling leads to the linear couplings of the sigma field to the Standard Model through the trace of the energy-momentum tensor in Einstein frame. Thus, regarding the sigma field as a decaying dark matter, we consider the non-thermal production mechanisms for dark matter from the decays of Higgs and inflaton condensate and show the parameter space that is compatible with the correct relic density and cosmological constraints.

Pendulum Leptogenesis

We propose a new non-thermal Leptogenesis mechanism that takes place during the reheating epoch, and utilizes the Ratchet mechanism. The interplay between the oscillation of the inflaton during reheating and a scalar lepton leads to a dynamical system that emulates the well-known forced pendulum. This is found to produce driven motion in the phase of the scalar lepton which leads to the generation of a non-zero lepton number density that is later redistributed to baryon number via sphaleron processes. This model successfully reproduces the observed baryon asymmetry, while simultaneously providing an origin for neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism.

LHC Searches for Top-philic Kaluza-Klein Graviton

We study the phenomenology of a massive graviton $G$ with non-universal couplings to the Standard Model (SM) particles. Such a particle can arise as a warped Kaluza-Klein graviton from a framework of the Randall-Sundrum extra-dimension model. In particular, we consider a case in which $G$ is top-philic, i.e., $G$ interacts strongly with the right-handed top quark, resulting in the large top-loop contributions to its production via the gluon fusion and its decays to the SM gauge bosons. We take into account the constraints from the current 13 TeV LHC data on the channels of $t\bar{t}$, $γγ$, $jj (gg)$, $γZ$, and $ZZ$. Consequently, it is found that the strongest limit for this spin-2 resonance $G$ comes from the $t\bar{t}$ pair search, which constrains the cutoff scale to be of ${\cal O}$(100 GeV) for the right-top coupling of ${\cal O}(1)$ and the massive graviton mass in the range $m_G$=2-5 TeV, significantly relaxed compared with the universal $G$ coupling case.

Vacuum Magnetic Birefringence Experiment as a probe of Dark Sector

Vacuum magnetic birefringence (VMB) is a nonlinear electromagnetic effect predicted by QED. In addition to the effect from QED, the effect also has a possibility to probe the dark sector. The effect predicted by QED is parity conservative, but the effect from the dark sector can induce parity violation. To pursue this possibility, we calculated the effect from the dark sector with the generalized Heisenberg-Euler effective Lagrangian that is applicable to parity-violating theories. Various dark sector models exist, among which the contribution of the dark sector neutrinos to the VMB experiment is examined. The contribution comes from the mixing of photon with the dark sector Z boson and violates parity, thus inducing a parity-violating electromagnetic interaction. If the polarization vector is denoted by $ε(θ_i)$ when its direction is rotated by an angle $θ_i$ from the direction of the applied magnetic field, the change of the polarization from $ε(45^\circ)$ to $ε(-45^\circ)$ and vice versa are examined. The contribution from the dark sector modifies the magnitude of the polarization change, so it can be detected by measuring the magnitude precisely. In addition to the change in the magnitude, the dark sector also induces parity-violating effects. We also propose a new scheme to measure the effect of parity violation directly. By measuring the change of polarization from $ε(0^{\circ})$ to $ε(90^\circ)$, and vice versa, with a ring Fabry-Pérot resonator, one can search for the effect directly. The signal that appears in this scheme is evidence of parity violation from beyond standard model theories.

Ratchet Baryogenesis with an Analogy to the Forced Pendulum

A new scenario of baryogenesis via the ratchet mechanism is proposed based on an analogy to the forced pendulum. The oscillation of the inflaton field during the reheating epoch after inflation plays the role of the driving force, while the phase $θ$ of a scalar baryon field (a complex scalar field with baryon number) plays the role of the angle of the pendulum. When the inflaton is coupled to the scalar baryon, the behavior of the phase $θ$ can be analogous to that of the angle of the forced pendulum. If the oscillation of the driving force is adjusted to the pendulum's motion, a directed rotation of the pendulum is obtained with a non-vanishing value of $\dotθ$, which models successful baryogenesis since $\dotθ$ is proportional to the baryon number density. Similar ratchet models which lead to directed motion have been used in the study of molecular motors in biology. There, the driving force is supplied by chemical reactions, while in our scenario this role is played by the inflaton during the reheating epoch. Generalized Heisenberg-Euler formula in Abelian gauge theory with parity violation

A generalized Heisenberg-Euler formula is given for an Abelian gauge theory having vector as well as axial vector couplings to a massive fermion. So, the formula is applicable to a parity-violating theory. The gauge group is chosen to be $U(1)$. The formula is quite similar to that in quantum electrodynamics, but there is a complexity in which one factor (related to spin) is expressed in terms of the expectation value. The expectation value is evaluated by the contraction with the one-dimensional propagator in a given background field. The formula affords a basis to the vacuum magnetic birefringence experiment, which aims to probe the dark sector, where the interactions of the light fermions with the gauge fields are not necessarily parity conserving.

Simplified dark matter models with a spin-2 mediator at the LHC

We consider simplified dark matter models where a dark matter candidate couples to the standard model (SM) particles via an $s$-channel spin-2 mediator, and study constraints on the model parameter space from the current LHC data. Our focus lies on the complementarity among different searches, in particular monojet and multijet plus missing energy searches and resonance searches. For universal couplings of the mediator to SM particles, missing-energy searches can give stronger constraints than $WW$, $ZZ$, dijet, dihiggs, $t\bar t$, $b\bar b$ resonance searches in the low-mass region and/or when the coupling of the mediator to dark matter is much larger than its couplings to SM particles. The strongest constraints however come from diphoton and dilepton resonance searches. Only if these modes are suppressed, missing-energy searches can be competitive in constraining dark matter models with a spin-2 mediator.

Construction of a Model of Monopolium and its Search via Multi-Photon Channels at LHC

A model of monopolium is constructed based on an electromagnetic dual formulation of Zwanziger and lattice gauge theory. To cope with the strong coupling nature of the magnetic charge, for which the monopole is confined, $ U(1) $ lattice gauge theory is applied. The monopole is assumed to have a finite-sized inner structure based on a 't Hooft-Polyakov like solution in which the magnetic charge is uniformly distributed on the surface of a sphere. The monopole and antimonopole potential becomes linear plus Coulomb outside the sphere and is constant inside. Numerical estimation gives two kinds of solutions: One which has a small binding energy, and hence the para-($ J=0 $) and ortho-($ J=1 $) monopoliums have degenerate masses. For the parameter choices considered, they both have $ \mathcal{O}(1-10) $ TeV masses and are very short-lived. The other solution has a small monopole mass and large binding energy, with an illustrative example of parameter choices giving a 750 GeV para-monopolium and 1.4 TeV ortho-monopolium. The production rate of the former is one order of magnitude smaller than the announced enhancement, but they may be the target of future LHC searches and the 100 TeV colliders.

Search for Kaluza-Klein gravitons in extra dimension models via forward detectors at the LHC

We investigate contributions of Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton in extra dimension models to the process $pp \to pγp \to pγj X$, where a proton emits a quasireal photon and is detected by using the very forward detectors planned at the LHC. In addition to the $γq$ initial state as in the Compton scattering in the standard model, the $γg$ scattering contributes through the $t$-channel exchange of KK gravitons. Taking account of pileup contributions to the background and examining viable kinematical cuts, constraints on the parameter space of both the ADD (Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali) model and the RS (Randall and Sundrum) model are studied. With 200 fb$^{-1}$ data at a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, the expected lower bound on the cut-off scale for the ADD model is 6.3 TeV at 95% confidence level, while a lower limit of 2.0 (0.5) TeV is set on the mass of the first excited graviton with the coupling parameter $k/\overline{M}_{\rm Pl}=0.1$ (0.01) for the RS model.
