Astrophysical and Cosmological Constraints on Neutrino masses

We review some astrophysical and cosmological properties and implications of neutrino masses and mixing angles. These include: constraints based on the relic density of neutrinos, limits on their masses and lifetimes, BBN limits on mass parameters, neutrinos and supernovae, and neutrinos and high energy cosmic rays.

Semiclassical force for electroweak baryogenesis: three-dimensional derivation

We derive a semiclassical transport equation for fermions propagating in the presence of a CP-violating planar bubble wall at a first order electroweak phase transition. Starting from the Kadanoff-Baym (KB) equation for the two-point (Wightman) function we perform an expansion in gradients, or equivalently in the Planck constant h-bar. We show that to first order in h-bar the KB equations have a spectral solution, which allows for an on-shell description of the plasma excitations. The CP-violating force acting on these excitations is found to be enhanced by a boost factor in comparison with the 1+1-dimensional case studied in a former paper. We find that an identical semiclassical force can be obtained by the WKB method. Applications to the MSSM are also mentioned.

Some aspects of collisional sources for electroweak baryogenesis

We consider the dynamics of fermions with a spatially varying mass which couple to bosons through a Yukawa interaction term and perform a consistent weak coupling truncation of the relevant kinetic equations. We then use a gradient expansion and derive the CP-violating source in the collision term for fermions which appears at first order in gradients. The collisional sources together with the semiclassical force constitute the CP-violating sources relevant for baryogenesis at the electroweak scale. We discuss also the absence of sources at first order in gradients in the scalar equation, and the limitations of the relaxation time approximation.

Quantum Boltzmann equations for electroweak baryogenesis including gauge fields

We review and extend to include the gauge fields our derivation of the semiclassical limit of the collisionless quantum transport equations for the fermions in presence of a CP-violating bubble wall at a first order electroweak phase transition. We show how the (gradient correction modified) Lorenz-force appears both in the Schwinger-Keldysh approach and in the semiclassical WKB-treatment. In the latter approach the inclusion of gauge fields removes the apparent phase reparametrization dependence of the intermediate calculations. We also discuss setting up the fluid equations for practical calculations in electroweak baryogenesis including the self-consistent (hyper)electric field and the anomaly.

Oscillation Induced Neutrino Asymmetry Growth in the Early Universe

We study the dynamics of active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early universe using full momentum-dependent quantum-kinetic equations. These equations are too complicated to allow for an analytical treatment, and numerical solution is greatly complicated due to very pronounced and narrow structures in the momentum variable introduced by resonances. Here we introduce a novel dynamical discretization of the momentum variable which overcomes this problem. As a result we can follow the evolution of neutrino ensemble accurately well into the stable growing phase. Our results confirm the existence of a "chaotic region" of mixing parameters, for which the final sign of the asymmetry, and hence the SBBN prediction of He(4)-abundance cannot be accurately determined.

Erratum for "Supersymmetric Electroweak Baryogenesis"

We correct a numerical error which led to an overestimate of the baryon asymmetry from supersymmetric electroweak baryogenesis in our paper JHEP07(2000)018. Updated dependences of the baryon asymmetry on chargino mass parameters and the bubble wall velocity are shown. We also include LEP-II-constraints on the chargino mass parameters. Combined with our corrected results for the baryon asymmetry these constraints imply that the phase in the chargino mass matrix must violate CP nearly maximally in order to generate a large enough baryon asymmetry. A number of other typographical errors are also corrected.

First principle derivation of semiclassical force for electroweak baryogenesis

We perform a systematic gradient expansion on kinetic equations and derive the CP-violating semiclassical force for fermions propagating in presence of a CP-violating wall at a first order electroweak phase transition. The force appears at order h-bar in the flow term of the kinetic equation and agrees with the semiclassical force used for baryogenesis computations. In particular we consider the force for charginos in both the MSSM and NMSSM. We then study the continuity equations for the vector and axial vector currents and stress the role of the latter as the one containing baryogenesis sources. We also show that there is no CP-violating force for bosons to order h-bar in gradient expansion.

Creation of large spatial fluctuations in neutrino asymmetry by neutrino oscillations

We consider active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early universe in an inhomogeneous isocurvature background. We show that very small initial baryonic seed-inhomogeneities can trigger a growth of very large amplitude spatial fluctuations in lepton asymmetry. Domains of varying asymmetry are observed to persist for a long time despite dissipative effects. The space dependent asymmetry profiles give rise to MSW-resonances within the domain boundaries, enhancing dramatically the equilibration of the sterile neutrino species. According to our one-dimensional toy-model, the effect is so strong that almost the entire parameter space where exponential growth of asymmetry occurs would be ruled out by nucleosynthesis.

A New Source for Electroweak Baryogenesis in the MSSM

One of the most experimentally testable explanations for the origin of the baryon asymmetry of the universe is that it was created during the electroweak phase transition, in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Previous efforts have focused on the current for the difference of the two Higgsino fields, $H_1-H_2$, as the source of biasing sphalerons to create the baryon asymmetry. We point out that the current for the orthogonal linear combination, $H_1+H_2$, is larger by several orders of magnitude. Although this increases the efficiency of electroweak baryogenesis, we nevertheless find that large CP-violating angles $\ge 0.15$ are required to get a large enough baryon asymmetry.

Supersymmetric Electroweak Baryogenesis

We re-examine the generation of the baryon asymmetry in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) during the electroweak phase transition. We find that the dominant source for baryogenesis arises from the chargino sector. The CP-violation comes from the complex phase in the mu parameter, which provides CP-odd contributions to the particle dispersion relations. This leads to different accelerations for particles and antiparticles in the wall region which, combined with diffusion, leads to the separation of Higgsinos and their antiparticles in the front of the wall. These asymmetries get transported to produce perturbations in the left-handed chiral quarks, which then drive sphaleron interactions to create the baryon asymmetry. We present a complete derivation of the semiclassical WKB formalism, including the chargino dispersion relations and a self-consistent derivation of the diffusion equations starting from semiclassical Boltzmann equations for WKB-excitations. We stress the advantages of treating the transport equations in terms of the manifestly gauge invariant physical energy and kinetic momentum, rather than in the gauge variant canonical variables used in previous treatments. We show that a large enough baryon asymmetry can be created for the phase of the complex mu parameter as small as ~ 0.001, which is consistent with bounds from the neutron electric dipole moment.

Sources for Electroweak Baryogenesis

I review a computation of the baryon asymmetry arising from a first order electroweak phase transition in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard model by classical force mechanism (CFM). I focus on CP violation provided by the charginos and show that it is the usually neglected sum of the two Higgsino fields, H_1+H_2, which gives a larger contribution to the baryon asymmetry than does the combination H_1-H_2. In fact, the latter contribution is exactly zero in CFM, because it is associated with a phase transformation of the fields. Baryogenesis is found to be most effective in MSSM CFM when only $\tilde t_R$ is light, which lends independent support for the "light stop scenario", and it remains viable for CP-violating phases as small as δ_μ\sim {\it few} \times 10^{-3}.

Fermion propagator in a nontrivial background field

We study the fermion propagator in a spatially varying classical background field, and show that, contrary to common wisdom, it may get nontrivial gradient corrections already at the first order in derivative expansion. This occurs whenever the fermion self-energy acquires a spatially (or temporally) varying pseudoscalar term, a simple example of which is given by a complex mass term m(x)= m_R + i gamma_5 m_I. Such effective mass terms arise for example in extensions of the Standard Model during the electroweak transition, and they are crucial in providing the CP-violation necessary for electroweak baryogenesis.

The Quantum Boltzmann Equation in a Nontrivial Background

This talk is a status report on our study of quantum transport equations relevant for baryogenesis computations. Our main finding is that, as a consequence of localization in space, the quasiparticle picture of the plasma dynamics breaks down at first non-trivial order in gradient expansion. While in this talk we focus on bosons, we expect that a similar picture holds for fermions. We then argue that the quasiparticle picture is recovered in the adiabatic limit of frequent scattering.

The semiclassical propagator in field theory

We consider scalar field theory in a changing background field. As an example we study the simple case of a spatially varying mass for which we construct the semiclassical approximation to the propagator. The semiclassical dispersion relation is obtained by consideration of spectral integrals and agrees with the WKB result. Further we find that, as a consequence of localization, the semiclassical approximation necessarily contains quantum correlations in momentum space.

Quantum Transport Equations for a Scalar Field

We derive quantum Boltzmann equations from Schwinger-Dyson equations in gradient expansion for a weakly coupled scalar field theory with a spatially varying mass. We find that at higher order in gradients a full description of the system requires specifying not only an on shell distribution function but also a finite number of its derivatives, or equivalently its higher moments. These derivatives describe quantum coherence arising as a consequence of localization in position space. We then show that in the limit of frequent scatterings coherent quantum effects are suppressed, and the transport equations reduce to the single Boltzmann equation for particle density, in which particles flow along modified semiclassical trajectories in phase space.

On chaoticity of the amplification of the neutrino asymmetry in the early universe

We consider numerically the growth of neutrino asymmetry in active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early universe. It is shown that the final sign of the asymmetry can be highly sensitive to small variations of the oscillation parameters. We find regions which are completely or partially chaotic, but also regions where the sign remains very robust. The consequences for atmospheric neutrino oscillations and primordial nucleosynthesis are then discussed. In the completely chaotic region the predicted He(4)-abundance has an inherent arbitrariness ΔY \simeq 0.01.

Quantum Boltzmann equations for mixing scalar fields

We report on a work in progress, whose goal is a systematic field theoretical derivation of the quantum transport equations for baryon production in the electroweak plasma at a first order phase transition in the limit of slowly varying background fields (thick wall limit). We start with the Schwinger-Dyson equations for the two point Green function written in the closed time contour (CTC) formalism. The quantum Boltzmann equations for the density matrix arise when the SD-equations are expanded to the first order in the gradients in the on-shell limit. In this paper we consider only scalar fields, but the formalism can easily be extended to fermions.

Strongly first order electroweak phase transition induced by primordial hypermagnetic fields

We consider the effect of the presence of a hypermagnetic field at the electroweak phase transition. Screening of the Z-component inside a bubble of the broken phase delays the phase transition and makes it stronger first order. We show that the sphaleron constraint can be evaded for m_H up to 100 GeV if a B_Y\gsim 0.3 T^2 exists at the time of the EW phase transition, thus resurrecting the possibility for baryogenesis within the minimal standard model (provided enough CP violation can be obtained). We estimate that for m_H\gsim 100 GeV the Higgs condendsate behaves like a type II superconductor with Z-vortices penetrating the bubble. Also, for such high Higgs masses the minimum B_Y field required for a strong first order phase transition is large enough to render the W-field unstable towards forming a condensate which changes the simple picture of the symmetry breaking.
