Coleman Integration on Modular Curves

Coleman integrals is a major tool in the explicit arithmetic of algebraic varieties, notably in the study of rational points on curves. One of the inputs to compute Coleman integrals is the availability of an affine model. We develop a model-free algorithm that computes single Coleman integrals between any two points on modular curves. Using Hecke operators, any Coleman integral can be broken down into a sum of tiny integrals. We illustrate this using several examples computed in SageMath and Magma. We also suggest some future directions for this work, including a possible extension to iterated Coleman integrals.

On the degree of polynomials computing square roots mod p

For an odd prime $p$, we say $f(X) \in {\mathbb F}_p[X]$ computes square roots in $\mathbb F_p$ if, for all nonzero perfect squares $a \in \mathbb F_p$, we have $f(a)^2 = a$. When $p \equiv 3 \mod 4$, it is well known that $f(X) = X^{(p+1)/4}$ computes square roots. This degree is surprisingly low (and in fact lowest possible), since we have specified $(p-1)/2$ evaluations (up to sign) of the polynomial $f(X)$. On the other hand, for $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$ there was previously no nontrivial bound known on the lowest degree of a polynomial computing square roots in $\mathbb F_p$; it could have been anywhere between $\frac{p}{4}$ and $\frac{p}{2}$. We show that for all $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$, the degree of a polynomial computing square roots has degree at least $p/3$. Our main new ingredient is a general lemma which may be of independent interest: powers of a low degree polynomial cannot have too many consecutive zero coefficients. The proof method also yields a robust version: any polynomial that computes square roots for 99\% of the squares also has degree almost $p/3$. In the other direction, a result of Agou, Deliglése, and Nicolas (Designs, Codes, and Cryptography, 2003) shows that for infinitely many $p \equiv 1 \mod 4$, the degree of a polynomial computing square roots can be as small as $3p/8$.

Isogeny Classes of Abelian Varieties over Finite Fields in the LMFDB

This document is intended to summarize the theory and methods behind fq_isog collection inside the ab_var database in the LMFDB as well as some observations gleaned from these databases. This collection consists of tables of Weil q-polynomials, which by the Honda-Tate theorem are in bijection with isogeny classes of abelian varieties over finite fields.

Counterexamples to a Conjecture of Ahmadi and Shparlinski

Ahmadi-Shparlinski conjectured that every ordinary, geometrically simple Jacobian over a finite field has maximal angle rank. Using the L-Functions and Modular Forms Database, we provide two counterexamples to this conjecture in dimension 4.

Slopes of indecomposable F-isocrystals

We prove that for an indecomposable convergent or overconvergent F-isocrystal on a smooth irreducible variety over a perfect field of characteristic p, the gap between consecutive slopes at the generic point cannot exceed 1. (This may be thought of as a crystalline analogue of the following consequence of Griffiths transversality: for an indecomposable variation of complex Hodge structures, there cannot be a gap between nonzero Hodge numbers.) As an application, we deduce a refinement of a result of V.Lafforgue on the slopes of Frobenius of an l-adic local system. We also prove similar statements for G-local systems (crystalline and l-adic ones), where G is a reductive group. We translate our results on local systems into properties of the p-adic absolute values of the Hecke eigenvalues of a cuspidal automorphic representation of a reductive group over the adeles of a global field of characteristic p>0.

On Families of (Phi,Gamma)-modules

Berger and Colmez introduced a theory of families of overconvergent étale (Phi,Gamma)-modules associated to families of p-adic Galois representations over p-adic Banach algebras. However, in contrast with the classical theory of (Phi,Gamma)-modules, the functor they obtain is not an equivalence of categories. In this paper, we prove that when the base is an affinoid space, every family of (overconvergent) étale (Phi,Gamma)-modules can locally be converted into a family of p-adic representations in a unique manner, providing the "local" equivalence. There is a global mod p obstruction related to the moduli of residual representations.
