RCSEDv2: homogenization of multi-wavelength photometric data

RCSEDv2 (https://rcsed2.voxastro.org/), the second Reference Catalog of Spectral Energy Distributions of galaxies includes the largest homogeneously processed photometric dataset for 4 million galaxies assembled from several wide-field surveys. Here we describe the methodology of the photometric data homogenization. We first correct all photometric measurements for the foreground Galactic extinction, then convert them into the photometric system we adopted as a standard (GALEX + SDSS + UKIDSS + WISE). We computed aperture corrections into several pre-defined apertures by using published galaxy sizes / light profiles and image quality for each of the surveys. We accounted for k-corrections using our own analytic approximations. Such a homogeneous photometric catalog allows us to build fully calibrated SEDs for the galaxies in our sample (defined by the availability of their spectra) and enables direct scientific analysis of this unique extragalactic dataset.

Hybrid minimization algorithm for computationally expensive multi-dimensional fitting

Multi-dimensional optimization is widely used in virtually all areas of modern astrophysics. However, it is often too computationally expensive to evaluate a model on-the-fly. Typically, it is solved by pre-computing a grid of models for a predetermined set of positions in the parameter space and then interpolating. Here we present a hybrid minimization approach based on the local quadratic approximation of the $χ^2$ profile from a discrete set of models in a multidimensional parameter space. The main idea of our approach is to eliminate the interpolation of models from the process of finding the best-fitting solution. We present several examples of applications of our minimization technique to the analysis of stellar and extragalactic spectra.

Multi-segment and Echelle stellar spectra processing issues and how to solve them

High-quality stellar spectra are in great demand now - they are the most important ingredient in the stellar population synthesis to study galaxies and star clusters. Here we describe the procedures to increase the quality of flux calibration of stellar spectra. We use examples of NIR intermediate-resolution Echelle spectra collected with the Folded InfraRed Echellete (R~6500, Magellan Baade) and high-resolution UV-optical spectra observed with UVES (R~80000, ESO VLT). By using these procedures, we achieved the quality of the global spectrophotometric calibration as good as 1-2%, which fulfills the requirements for the quality of stellar spectra intended to be used in the stellar population synthesis

Observing, calibrating and reducing near-infrared imaging mosaics

In near-infrared bands, co-adding and tiling of astronomical imaging datasets require a sufficiently high calibration quality (flat fielding, background subtraction). Here we present a complete workflow for obtaining imaging mosaics with the MMT and Magellan Infrared Spectrograph (MMIRS) operated at the 6.5-m MMT in Arizona and open-source add-on tools developed for the MMIRS pipeline for preparation and data reduction of mosaic observations. We describe pre-observing actions, such as design of dithering patterns and mosaic layouts and post-processing steps to perform absolute astrometric and photometric calibration, and also generate HiPS maps to display the final data product in Aladin / Aladin Lite.

Transforming gas-rich low-mass disky galaxies into ultra-diffuse galaxies by ram pressure

Faint extended elliptically-shaped ultra-diffuse galaxies and slightly brighter and more compact dwarf elliptical and lenticular stellar systems are common in galaxy clusters. Their poorly constrained evolutionary paths can be studied by identifying young ultra-diffuse galaxy and dwarf elliptical analogs populated with bright, massive stars. Using data mining we identified 11 such low-mass ($2\times10^8<M_*<2\times10^9 M_{\odot}$) galaxies with large half-light radii ($2.0<r_e<5$ kpc) and recently quenched star formation in the Coma and Abell 2147 galaxy clusters. All galaxies happen to have ram-pressure-stripped tails with signs of current or recent star formation. Deep spectroscopic observations revealed rotating stellar discs containing 70-95% dark matter by mass. A large fraction of the disc stars (10-60%) formed in intense star bursts 180-970 Myr ago, probably triggered by ram pressure. Observed global gradients of stellar age corroborate this scenario. Passive evolution in the next 10 Gyr will transform 9 of the 11 galaxies into ultra-diffuse galaxies. If we assume a constant rate of galaxy infall, 44$\pm$16% of the most luminous present-day ultra-diffuse galaxies in Coma must have formed via ram pressure stripping of disky progenitors.

Approximate analytical description of the high latitude extinction

The distribution of visual interstellar extinction $A_V$ has been mapped in selected areas over the Northern sky, using available LAMOST DR5 and Gaia DR2/EDR3 data. $A_V$ was modelled as a barometric function of galactic latitude and distance. The function parameters were then approximated by spherical harmonics. The resulting analytical tridimensional model of the interstellar extinction can be used to predict $A_V$ values for stars with known parallaxes, as well as the total Galactic extinction in a given location in the sky.

Observational insights on the origin of giant low surface brightness galaxies

Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) with dynamically cold stellar discs reaching the radius of 130 kpc challenge currently considered galaxy formation mechanisms. We analyse new deep long-slit optical spectroscopic observations, archival optical images and published HI and optical spectroscopic data for a sample of seven gLSBGs, for which we performed mass modelling and estimated the parameters of dark matter haloes assuming the Burkert dark matter density profile. Our sample is not homogeneous by morphology, parameters of stellar populations and total mass, however, six of seven galaxies sit on the high-mass extension of the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. In UGC 1382 we detected a global counterrotation of the stellar high surface brightness (HSB) disc with respect to the extended LSB disc. In UGC 1922 with signatures of a possible merger, the gas counterrotation is seen in the inner disc. Six galaxies host active galactic nuclei, three of which have the estimated black hole masses substantially below those expected for their (pseudo-)bulge properties suggesting poor merger histories. Overall, the morphology, internal dynamics, and low star formation efficiency in the outer discs indicate that the three formation scenarios shape gLSBGs: (i) a two-stage formation when an HSB galaxy is formed first and then grows an LSB disc by accreting gas from an external supply; (ii) an unusual shallow and extended dark matter halo; (iii) a major merger with fine-tuned orbital parameters and morphologies of the merging galaxies.

Internal dynamics and stellar content of nine ultra-diffuse galaxies in the Coma cluster prove their evolutionary link with dwarf early-type galaxies

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are spatially extended, low surface brightness stellar systems with regular elliptical-like morphology found in a wide range of environments. Studies of the internal dynamics and dark matter content of UDGs that would elucidate their formation and evolution have been hampered by their low surface brightnesses. Here we present spatially resolved velocity profiles, stellar velocity dispersions, ages and metallicities for 9 UDGs in the Coma cluster. We use intermediate-resolution spectra obtained with Binospec, the MMT's new high-throughput optical spectrograph. We derive dark matter fractions between 50~\%\ and 90~\% within the half-light radius using Jeans dynamical models. Three galaxies exhibit major axis rotation, two others have highly anisotropic stellar orbits, and one shows signs of triaxiality. In the Faber--Jackson and mass--metallicity relations, the 9 UDGs fill the gap between cluster dwarf elliptical (dE) and fainter dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. Overall, the observed properties of all 9 UDGs can be explained by a combination of internal processes (supernovae feedback) and environmental effects (ram-pressure stripping, interaction with neighbors). These observations suggest that UDGs and dEs are members of the same galaxy population.

The recalibration of the UVES-POP stellar spectral library

We have re-reduced all spectra from the UVES-POP stellar spectral library using the version 5.5.7 of the UVES pipeline and an algorithm we designed, which allows us to remove ripples in regions where echelle orders are stitched. These ripples are caused by the offset of a flat field with respect to a science frame and under- or oversubtraction of scattered light. We have also developed an approach to merge 6 UVES spectral chunks divided by gaps in the spectral coverage by using synthetic stellar atmospheres to predict the flux difference between the segments. At the end, we improved the flux calibration quality to 2% or better for 85% of 430 spectra in the library.

RCSED - A Value-Added Reference Catalog of Spectral Energy Distributions of 800,299 Galaxies in 11 Ultraviolet, Optical, and Near-Infrared Bands: Morphologies, Colors, Ionized Gas and Stellar Populations Properties

We present RCSED, the value-added Reference Catalog of Spectral Energy Distributions of galaxies, which contains homogenized spectrophotometric data for 800,299 low and intermediate redshift galaxies (0.007<z<0.6) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic sample. Accessible from the Virtual Observatory (VO) and complemented with detailed information on galaxy properties obtained with the state-of-the-art data analysis, RCSED enables direct studies of galaxy formation and evolution during the last 5Gyr. We provide tabulated color transformations for galaxies of different morphologies and luminosities and analytic expressions for the red sequence shape in different colors. RCSED comprises integrated k-corrected photometry in up-to 11 ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared bands published by the GALEX, SDSS, and UKIDSS wide-field imaging surveys; results of the stellar population fitting of SDSS spectra including best-fitting templates, velocity dispersions, parameterized star formation histories, and stellar metallicities computed for instantaneous starburst and exponentially declining star formation models; parametric and non-parametric emission line fluxes and profiles; and gas phase metallicities. We link RCSED to the Galaxy Zoo morphological classification and galaxy bulge+disk decomposition results by Simard et al. We construct the color-magnitude, Faber-Jackson, mass-metallicity relations, compare them with the literature and discuss systematic errors of galaxy properties presented in our catalog. RCSED is accessible from the project web-site and via VO simple spectrum access and table access services using VO compliant applications. We describe several SQL query examples against the database. Finally, we briefly discuss existing and future scientific applications of RCSED and prospectives for the catalog extension to higher redshifts and different wavelengths.
