A Pythia8 Tune for Open Charm and Beauty Production in Fixed-Target Collisions

We present FTFT (Fixed-Target Fragmentation Tune), a set of Pythia8 parameters optimised for the production of charm and beauty hadrons in fixed-target collisions at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} \simeq 20-42$ GeV. Accurate heavy-flavour production in this regime is needed to predict neutrino fluxes and hidden-particle yields at beam-dump experiments such as SHiP. The tune is derived in two stages. First, differential distributions in Feynman-$x$ ($x_F$), transverse momentum squared ($p_T^2$), and charge or leading-particle production asymmetry of $D$ mesons are fitted to data from pion- and proton-beam fixed-target experiments. Second, $K$-factors for each beam are extracted from inclusive charm cross-section measurements to scale the simulated cross section to the measured data. The fitted charm-fragmentation and multiparton-interaction parameters depart from standard LHC-tuned defaults, in line with earlier fixed-target studies.

The ECFA Early-Career Researchers Panel: Report for the year 2023

The European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) Early-Career Researcher (ECR) panel, which represents the interests of the ECR community to ECFA, presents in this document its initiatives and activities in the year 2023. This report summarises the process of the first big turnover in the panel composition at the start of 2023 and reports on the activities of the active working groups - either pursued from before or newly established. The overarching goal of the ECFA-ECR panel is to better understand and support the diverse interests of early-career researchers in the ECFA community and beyond.

Focus topics for the ECFA study on Higgs / Top / EW factories

In order to stimulate new engagement and trigger some concrete studies in areas where further work would be beneficial towards fully understanding the physics potential of an $e^+e^-$ Higgs / Top / Electroweak factory, we propose to define a set of focus topics. The general reasoning and the proposed topics are described in this document.

Particles in a pocket

Communicating science through mobile smartphone and tablet applications is one of the most efficient ways to reach general public of diverse background and age coverage. The Higgsy project was created in 2022 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN. This project introduces a mobile game to search for the Higgs boson production in a generic particle detector. The MatterBricks is an augmented-reality project that was created for a major national event in Belgium, held in 2023. The main features of the two mobile applications and further prospects for reaching general public through mobile application development process are discussed.

The ECFA Early Career Researcher's Panel: composition, structure, and activities, 2021 -- 2022

The European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) Early Career Researcher's (ECR) panel, which represents the interests of the ECR community to ECFA, officially began its activities in January 2021. In the first two years, the panel has defined its own internal structure, responded to ECFA requests for feedback, and launched its own initiatives to better understand and support the diverse interests of early career researchers. This report summarises the panel composition and structure, as well as the different activities the panel has been involved with during the first two years of its existence.

Flavour-changing neutral scalar interactions of the top quark

A study of the top quark interactions via flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes provides an intriguing connection between the heaviest elementary particle of the standard model (SM) of particle physics and the new scalar bosons that are predicted in several notable SM extensions. The production cross sections of the processes with top-scalar FCNC interactions can be significantly enhanced to the observable level at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The present review summarizes the latest experimental results on the study of the top quark interactions with the Higgs boson via FCNC and describes several promising directions to look for new scalar particles.

Photon radiation effects in kinematic reconstruction of top quarks

Kinematic reconstruction of top quarks allows to define a set of kinematic observables relevant to various physics processes that involve top quarks and provides an additional handle for the suppression of background events. Radiation of photons in association with the top quarks alters the kinematics and the topology of the event, leading to visible systematic effects in measurable observables. The present study introduces an improved reconstruction of the top quark kinematics in the presence of photon radiation. The results are presented for processes with top quark pair production, as well as for singly-produced top quarks.

Results of the 2021 ECFA Early-Career Researcher Survey on Training in Instrumentation

The European Committee for Future Accelerators (ECFA) Early-Career Researchers (ECR) Panel was invited by the ECFA Detector R&D Roadmap conveners to collect feedback from the European ECR community. A working group within the ECFA ECR panel held a Townhall Meeting to get first input, and then designed and broadly circulated a detailed survey to gather feedback from the larger ECR community. A total of 473 responses to this survey were received, providing a useful overview of the experiences of ECRs in instrumentation training and related topics. This report summarises the feedback received, and is intended to serve as an input to the ECFA Detector R&D Roadmap process.

Search for new phenomena in top quark interactions

The study of the processes with the production of top quarks represents a unique possibility to test the standard model (SM) predictions and probe the new physics effects. Potential deviations from the SM expectations are parametrized within the framework of the Effective Field Theory (EFT). The latest EFT results from ATLAS and CMS experiments are presented. Dedicated studies of processes with flavour-changing neutral currents are also discussed.

The EFT and FCNC interpretations in the processes with top quarks at CMS

In absence of any distinct evidence of new physics phenomena at the LHC, an increasing number of experimental studies aim at probing anomalous effects with an effective field theory (EFT) that represents a comprehensive approach for interpretation of various experimental results. The processes with the production of top quarks are sensitive to several classes of EFT operators including the flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC). The summary of the latest CMS results based on the recent studies of the standard model processes and searches for new physics effects involving top quarks are presented.

Rare top quark production and decays at ATLAS and CMS

The most recent studies in the top quark sector are reviewed with the focus on the rare production mechanisms and suppressed decays. The experimental results obtained with the ATLAS and CMS detectors in proton-proton collisions at the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV include the measurements of the associated production of top quark pairs with vector bosons (${\rm t\bar{t}W}$, ${\rm t\bar{t}Z}$, ${\rm t\bar{t}γ}$), the first evidence for the ${\rm t(\bar{t})γq}$ process, the first observation of the ${\rm t(\bar{t})Zq}$ production, the study of the ${\rm t\bar{t}+b\bar{b}}$ and ${\rm t\bar{t}+t\bar{t}}$ processes, as well as searches for lepton flavour violation in top quark decays and effective field theory interpretations. The experimental results show good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

First observation of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}H}$ process at CMS

The top quark and the Higgs boson play a special role in the fundamental interactions of the standard model. The observation of the top quark pair production in association with the Higgs boson establishes the first direct measurement of the tree-level coupling of the Higgs boson to the top quark. The analysis of the data collected by the CMS detector results in the overall observed significance of 5.2 standard deviations for this process.

Search for flavour-changing neutral currents with top quarks

Flavour-changing neutral currents are extremely rare processes in the standard model that can be sensitive to various new physics effects. The summary of the latest experimental results from the LHC experiments is given. Preliminary results of sensitivity studies for future colliders are also discussed.

Search for the standard model deviations in top quark precision studies at CMS

Precision studies of top quark properties provide a unique playground to test the predictions of the standard model and to search for new physics. Reviewed results from the CMS experiment done with the data collected at 8 TeV include studies of top quark Wtb anomalous and FCNC couplings, polarization, CP-violation, and spin correlation effects. No significant deviations from the SM predictions are observed.
