A Quadratically Enriched Pushforward for Deligne--Mumford Stacks

We define a quadratically enriched pushforward for proper morphisms between smooth, proper Deligne--Mumford stacks over an arbitrary field using Grothendieck--Serre duality. We apply this pushforward to define quadratically enriched Euler classes and Euler numbers of relatively oriented vector bundles on smooth, proper Deligne--Mumford stacks. Finally, we define quadratically enriched fundamental classes for smooth, proper schemes over an arbitrary field, and we use these to propose a definition of quadratically enriched quantum $K$-invariants when the moduli space of stable maps is smooth, tame, and relatively oriented.

A^1-Euler classes: six functors formalisms, dualities, integrality and linear subspaces of complete intersections

We equate various Euler classes of algebraic vector bundles, including those of [BM, KW, DJK], and one suggested by M.J. Hopkins, A. Raksit, and J.-P. Serre. We establish integrality results for this Euler class, and give formulas for local indices at isolated zeros, both in terms of 6-functor formalism of coherent sheaves and as an explicit recipe in commutative algebra of Scheja and Storch. As an application, we compute the Euler classes associated to arithmetic counts of d-planes on complete intersections in P^n in terms of topological Euler numbers over R and C.

A quadratic Abramovich-Bertram formula

Quadratic Gromov--Witten invariants allow one to obtain an arithmetically meaningful count of curves satisfying constraints over a field $k$ without assuming that $k$ is the field of complex or real numbers. This paper studies the behavior of quadratic genus $0$ Gromov--Witten invariants during an algebraic analogue of surgery on del Pezzo surfaces. For this, we define and study (twisted) binomial coefficients in the Grothendieck--Witt group, building on work of Serre. We obtain a formula expressing the quadratic genus $0$ Gromov--Witten invariants of surfaces obtained as a smoothing of a given nodal surface in terms of those of the one having the largest Picard group. We give applications to quadratic Gromov--Witten invariants of rational del Pezzo surfaces of degree at least 7, some cubic surfaces, for point constraints defined over quadratic extensions of $k$, as well as an invariance result under a Dehn twist.

A relative orientation for the moduli space of stable maps to a del Pezzo surface

We prove orientation results for evaluation maps of moduli spaces of rational stable maps to del Pezzo surfaces over a field, both in characteristic $0$ and in positive characteristic. These results and the theory of degree developed in a sequel produce quadratically enriched counts of rational curves over non-algebraically closed fields of characteristic not $2$ or $3$. Orientations are constructed in two steps. First, the ramification locus of the evaluation map is shown to be the divisor in the moduli space of stable maps where image curves have a cusp. Second, this divisor is related to the discriminant of a branched cover of the moduli space given generically by pairs of points on the universal curve with the same image.

A quadratically enriched count of rational curves

We define a quadratically enriched count of rational curves in a given divisor class passing through a collection of points on a del Pezzo surface $S$ of degree $\geq 3$ over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2,3.$ When $S$ is $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected, the count takes values in the Grothendieck-Witt group GW(k) of quadratic forms over $k$ and depends only on the divisor class and the fields of definition of the points. More generally, the count is a section of the Grothendieck-Witt sheaf evaluated on $π_0^{\mathbb{A}^1}$ of the restriction of scalars of $S$ corresponding to the fields of definition of the points. We also treat del Pezzo surfaces of degree $2$ under certain conditions. The curve count defined in the present work recovers Gromov-Witten invariants when $k = \mathbb{C}$ and Welschinger invariants when $k = \mathbb{R}.$ To obtain an invariant curve count, we define a quadratically enriched degree for an algebraic map $f$ of $n$-dimensional smooth schemes over a field $k$ under appropriate hypotheses. For example, $f$ can be proper, generically finite and oriented over the complement of a subscheme of codimension $2.$ This degree is compatible with F. Morel's GW(k)-valued degree of an $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy class of maps between spheres. For $k \subseteq \mathbb{C}$, this produces an enrichment of the topological degree of a map between manifolds of the same dimension.

Quadratically enriched binomial coefficients over a finite field

We compute an analogue of Pascal's triangle enriched in bilinear forms over a finite field. This gives an arithmetically meaningful count of the ways to choose $j$ ring homomorphisms into an algebraic closure from an étale extension of degree $n$. We also compute a quadratic twist. These (twisted) enriched binomial coefficients are defined in joint work of Brugallé and the second-named author, building on work of Serre. Such binomial coefficients support curve counting results over non-algebraically closed fields, using $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory.

Motivic configurations on the line

For each configuration of rational points on the affine line, we define an operation on the group of unstable A1 motivic homotopy classes of endomorphisms of the projective line. We also derive an algebraic formula for the image of such an operation under Cazanave and Morel's unstable degree map, which is valued in an extension of the Grothendieck--Witt group. In contrast to the topological setting, these operations depend on the choice of configuration of points via a discriminant. We prove this by first showing a local-to-global formula for the global unstable degree as a modified sum of local terms. We then use an anabelian argument to generalize from the case of local degrees of a global rational function to the case of an arbitrary collection of endomorphisms of the projective line.

Welschinger--Witt invariants

Welschinger invariants are signed counts of real rational curves satisfying contraints. Quadratic Gromov--Witten invariants give such counts over general fields of characteristic different from 2 and 3. For rational del Pezzo surfaces over a field, we propose a conjectural relationship between Welschinger and quadratic Gromov--Witten invariants. We construct multivariable unramified Witt invariants, in the sense of Serre, from Welschinger invariants and call them Welschinger--Witt invariants. We show that quadratic Gromov--Witten invariants are also Witt invariants and control their ramification. We then conjecture an equality between these Witt invariants, in particular giving a conjectural computation of all the quadratic Gromov--Witten invariants of $k$-rational surfaces. We prove this conjecture for $k$-rational del Pezzo surfaces of degree at least 6.

The equivariant degree and an enriched count of rational cubics

We define the equivariant degree and local degree of a proper $G$-equivariant map between smooth $G$-manifolds when $G$ is a compact Lie group and prove a local to global result. We show the local degree can be used to compute the equivariant Euler characteristic of a smooth, compact $G$-manifold and the Euler number of a relatively oriented $G$-equivariant vector bundle when $G$ is finite. As an application, we give an equivariantly enriched count of rational plane cubics through a $G$-invariant set of 8 general points in $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$, valued in the representation ring and Burnside ring of a finite group. When $\mathbb{Z}/2$ acts by pointwise complex conjugation this recovers a signed count of real rational cubics.

Quadratic enrichment of the logarithmic derivative of the zeta function

We define an enrichment of the logarithmic derivative of the zeta function of a variety over a finite field to a power series with coefficients in the Grothendieck--Witt group. We show that this enrichment is related to the topology of the real points of a lift. For cellular schemes over a field, we prove a rationality result for this enriched logarithmic derivative of the zeta function as an analogue of part of the Weil conjectures. We also compute several examples, including toric varieties, and show that the enrichment is a motivic measure.

On quadratically enriched excess and residual intersections

We use recent duality results of Eisenbud--Ulrich to give tools to study quadratically enriched residual intersections when there is no excess bundle. We use this to prove a formula for the Witt-valued Euler number of an almost complete intersection. We give example computations of quadratically enriched excess and residual intersections.

These are lecture notes from the conference Arithmetic Topology at the Pacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences on applications of Morel's A1-degree to questions in enumerative geometry. Additionally, we give a new dynamic interpretation of the A1-Milnor number inspired by the first named author's enrichment of dynamic intersection numbers.

Compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-Euler characteristic and the Hochschild complex

We show the $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-Euler characteristic of a smooth, projective scheme over a characteristic $0$ field is represented by its Hochschild complex together with a canonical bilinear form, and give an exposition of the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-Euler characteristic $χ^{c}_{\mathbb{A}^{1}}: K_0(\mathbf{Var}_{k}) \to \text{GW}(k)$ from the Grothendieck group of varieties to the Grothendieck--Witt group of bilinear forms. We also provide example computations.

The Galois action on the lower central series of the fundamental group of the Fermat curve

Information about the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of a number field $K$ is encoded in how it acts on the étale fundamental group $π$ of a curve $X$ defined over $K$. In the case that $K=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_n)$ is the cyclotomic field and $X$ is the Fermat curve of degree $n \geq 3$, Anderson determined the action of $G_K$ on the étale homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/n \mathbb{Z}$.The étale homology is the first quotient in the lower central series of the étale fundamental group. In this paper, we determine the structure of the graded Lie algebra for $π$. As a consequence, this determines the action of $G_K$ on all degrees of the associated graded quotient of the lower central series of the étale fundamental group of the Fermat curve of degree $n$, with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/n \mathbb{Z}$.

The class of Eisenbud--Khimshiashvili--Levine is the local A1-Brouwer degree

Given a polynomial function with an isolated zero at the origin, we prove that the local A1-Brouwer degree equals the Eisenbud-Khimshiashvili-Levine class. This answers a question posed by David Eisenbud in 1978. We give an application to counting nodes together with associated arithmetic information by enriching Milnor's equality between the local degree of the gradient and the number of nodes into which a hypersurface singularity degenerates to an equality in the Grothendieck-Witt group.

An arithmetic count of the lines meeting four lines in P^3

We enrich the classical count that there are two complex lines meeting four lines in space to an equality of isomorphism classes of bilinear forms. For any field $k$, this enrichment counts the number of lines meeting four lines defined over $k$ in $\mathbb{P}^3_k$, with such lines weighted by their fields of definition together with information about the cross-ratio of the intersection points and spanning planes. We generalize this example to an infinite family of such enrichments, obtained using an Euler number in $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. The classical counts are recovered by taking the rank of the bilinear forms. In the appendix, the condition that the four lines each be defined over $k$ is relaxed to the condition that the set of four lines being defined over $k$.

An Arithmetic Count of the Lines on a Smooth Cubic Surface

We give an arithmetic count of the lines on a smooth cubic surface over an arbitrary field $k$, generalizing the counts that over $\mathbb{C}$ there are $27$ lines, and over $\mathbb{R}$ the number of hyperbolic lines minus the number of elliptic lines is $3$. In general, the lines are defined over a field extension $L$ and have an associated arithmetic type $α$ in $L^*/(L^*)^2$. There is an equality in the Grothendieck-Witt group $\operatorname{GW}(k)$ of $k$ $$\sum_{\text{lines}} \operatorname{Tr}_{L/k} \langle α\rangle = 15 \cdot \langle 1 \rangle + 12 \cdot \langle -1 \rangle, $$ where $\operatorname{Tr}_{L/k}$ denotes the trace $\operatorname{GW}(L) \to \operatorname{GW}(k)$. Taking the rank and signature recovers the results over $\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{R}$. To do this, we develop an elementary theory of the Euler number in $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory for algebraic vector bundles. We expect that further arithmetic counts generalizing enumerative results in complex and real algebraic geometry can be obtained with similar methods.
