Color image recovery using low-rank quaternion matrix completion algorithm

As a new color image representation tool, quaternion has achieved excellent results in color image processing problems. In this paper, we propose a novel low-rank quaternion matrix completion algorithm to recover missing data of color image. Motivated by two kinds of low-rank approximation approaches (low-rank decomposition and nuclear norm minimization) in traditional matrix-based methods, we combine the two approaches in our quaternion matrix-based model. Furthermore, the nuclear norm of the quaternion matrix is replaced by the sum of Frobenius norm of its two low-rank factor quaternion matrices. Based on the relationship between quaternion matrix and its equivalent complex matrix, the problem eventually is converted from quaternion number field to complex number field. An alternating minimization method is applied to solve the model. Simulation results on real world color image recovery show the superior performance and efficiency of the proposed algorithm over some state-of-the-art tensor-based ones.

FFT Multichannel Interpolation and Application to Image Super-resolution

This paper presents an innovative set of tools to support a methodology for the multichannel interpolation (MCI) of a discrete signal. It is shown that a bandlimited signal $f$ can be exactly reconstructed from finite samples of $g_k$ ($1\leq k\leq M$) which are the responses of $M$ linear systems with input $f$. The proposed interpolation can also be applied to approximate non-bandlimited signals. Quantitative error is analyzed to ensure its effectiveness in approximating non-bandlimited signals and its Hilbert transform. Based on the FFT technique, a fast algorithm which brings high computational efficiency and reliability for MCI is presented. The standout performance of MCI is illustrated by several simulations. Additionally, the proposed interpolation is applied to the single image super-resolution (SISR). Its superior performance in accuracy and speed of SISR is demonstrated by the experimental studies. Our results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively with the state-of-the-art methods in image upsampling and reconstruction by using the standard measurement criteria.

Novel sampling formulas associated with quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions

The Whittaker-Shannon-Kotel'nikov (WSK) sampling theorem provides a reconstruction formula for the bandlimited signals. In this paper, a novel kind of the WSK sampling theorem is established by using the theory of quaternion reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. This generalization is employed to obtain the novel sampling formulas for the bandlimited quaternion-valued signals. A special case of our result is to show that the 2D generalized prolate spheroidal wave signals obtained by Slepian can be used to achieve a sampling series of cube-bandlimited signals. The solutions of energy concentration problems in quaternion Fourier transform are also investigated.

Plancherel theorem and quaternion Fourier transform for square integrable functions

The quaternion Fourier transform (QFT), a generalization of the classical 2D Fourier transform, plays an increasingly active role in particular signal and colour image processing. There tends to be an inordinate degree of interest placed on the properties of QFT. The classical convolution theorem and multiplication formula are only suitable for 2D Fourier transform of complex-valued signal, and do not hold for QFT of quaternion-valued signal. The purpose of this paper is to overcome these problems and establish the Plancherel and inversion theorems of QFT in the square integrable signals space L2. First, we investigate the behaviours of QFT in the integrable signals space L1. Next, we deduce the energy preservation property which extends functions from L1 to L2 space. Moreover, some other important properties such as modified multiplication formula are also analyzed for QFT.

Floquet Theory for Quaternion-valued Differential Equations

This paper describes the Floquet theory for quaternion-valued differential equations (QDEs). The Floquet normal form of fundamental matrix for linear QDEs with periodic coefficients is presented and the stability of quaternionic periodic systems is accordingly studied. As an important application of Floquet theory, we give a discussion on the stability of quaternion-valued Hill's equation. Examples are presented to illustrate the proposed results.

Multichannel reconstruction from nonuniform samples with application to image recovery

The multichannel trigonometric reconstruction from uniform samples was proposed recently. It not only makes use of multichannel information about the signal but is also capable to generate various kinds of interpolation formulas according to the types and amounts of the collected samples. The paper presents the theory of multichannel interpolation from nonuniform samples. Two distinct models of nonuniform sampling patterns are considered, namely recurrent and generic nonuniform sampling. Each model involves two types of samples: nonuniform samples of the observed signal and its derivatives. Numerical examples and quantitative error analysis are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Additionally, the proposed algorithm for recovering highly corrupted images is also investigated. In comparison with the median filter and correction operation treatment, our approach produces superior results with lower errors.

Solve the linear quaternion-valued differential equations having multiple eigenvalues

The theory of two-dimensional linear quaternion-valued differential equations (QDEs) was recently established (see Kou and Xia, SAPM). Some profound differences between QDEs and ODEs were observed. Also, an algorithm to evaluate the fundamental matrix by employing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors was presented in [Kou and Xia, SAPM]. However, the fundamental matrix can be constructed providing that the eigenvalues are simple. If the linear system has multiple eigenvalues, how to construct the fundamental matrix? In particular, if the number of independent eigenvectors might be less than the dimension of the system. That is, the numbers of the eigenvectors is not enough to construct a fundamental matrix. How to find the "missing solutions"? The main purpose of this paper is to answer this question. Furthermore, Caley determinant for Quaternion-valued matrix was adopted to proceed the theory of QDEs in [Kou and Xia, SAPM]. One big disadvantage of Caley determinant is that it can be expanded along the different rows and columns. This may lead to different results due to non-commutativity of the quaternions. This approach is not convenient to be used. The novel definition of determinant for Quaternion-valued matrix based on permutation is introduced to analyze the theory. This newly definition of determinant has great advantage compare to Calay determinant.

Linear Quaternion Differential Equations: Basic Theory and Fundamental Results

Quaternion-valued differential equations (QDEs) is a new kind of differential equations which have many applications in physics and life sciences. The largest difference between QDEs and ODEs is the algebraic structure. On the non-commutativity of the quaternion algebra, the algebraic structure of the solutions to the QDEs is completely different from ODEs. It is actually a left- or right- free module, not a linear vector space. This paper establishes a systematic frame work for the theory of linear QDEs, which can be applied to quantum mechanics, fluid mechanics, Frenet frame in differential geometry, kinematic modelling, attitude dynamics, Kalman filter design and spatial rigid body dynamics, etc. We prove that the algebraic structure of the solutions to the QDEs is actually a left- or right- module, not a linear vector space. On the non-commutativity of the quaternion algebra, many concepts and properties for the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) can not be used. They should be redefined accordingly. A definition of Wronskian is introduced under the framework of quaternions which is different from standard one in the ordinary differential equations. Liouville formula for QDEs is given. Also, it is necessary to treat the eigenvalue problems with left- and right-sides, accordingly. Upon these, we studied the solutions to the linear QDEs. Furthermore, we present two algorithms to evaluate the fundamental matrix. Some concrete examples are given to show the feasibility of the obtained algorithms. Finally, a conclusion and discussion ends the paper.

Edge Detection Methods Based on Differential Phase Congruency of Monogenic Image

Edge Detection Methods Based on Differential Phase Congruency of Monogenic Image Abstract: Edge detection has been widely used in medical image processing and automatic diagnosis. Some novel edge detection algorithms, based on the monogenic scale-space, are proposed by detecting points of local extrema in local amplitude, the local attenuation and modified differential phase congruency methods. The monogenic scale-space is obtained from a known image by Poisson and conjugate Poisson filtering. In mathematics, it is the Hardy space in the upper half-space. The boundary value of the monogenic scale-space representation is a monogenic image. In the monogenic scale-space, the definitions involving scale, such as local amplitude, local attenuation, local phase angle, local phase vector and local frequency (phase derivatives) are proposed. Using Clifford analysis, the relations between the local attenuation and the local phase vector are obtained. These study will be improved the understanding of image analysis in higher dimensional spaces. Experimental results are shown by using some typical images.

Uncertainty Principle for Measurable Sets and Signal Recovery in Quaternion Domains

The classical uncertainty principle of harmonic analysis states that a nontrivial function and its Fourier transform cannot both be sharply localized. It plays an important role in signal processing and physics. This paper generalizes the uncertainty principle for measurable sets from complex domain to hypercomplex domain using quaternion algebras, associated with the Quaternion Fourier transform. The performance is then evaluated in signal recovery problems where there is an interplay of missing and time-limiting data.

Hypercomplex Signal Energy Concentration in the Spatial and Quaternionic Linear Canonical Frequency Domains

Quaternionic Linear Canonical Transforms (QLCTs) are a family of integral transforms, which generalized the quaternionic Fourier transform and quaternionic fractional Fourier transform. In this paper, we extend the energy concentration problem for 2D hypercomplex signals (especially quaternionic signals). The most energy concentrated signals both in 2D spatial and quaternionic linear canonical frequency domains simultaneously are recently recognized to be the quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions (QPSWFs). The improved definitions of QPSWFs are studied which gave reasonable properties. The purpose of this paper is to understand the measurements of energy concentration in the 2D spatial and quaternionic linear canonical frequency domains. Examples of energy concentrated ratios between the truncated Gaussian function and QPSWFs intuitively illustrate that QPSWFs are more energy concentrated signals.

Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions Associated with the Quaternionic Fourier Transform

One of the fundamental problems in communications is finding the energy distribution of signals in time and frequency domains. It should, therefore, be of great interest to find the most energy concentration hypercomplex signal. The present paper finds a new kind of hypercomplex signals whose energy concentration is maximal in both time and frequency under quaternionic Fourier transform. The new signals are a generalization of the prolate spheroidal wave functions (also known as Slepian functions) to quaternionic space, which are called quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions. The purpose of this paper is to present the definition and properties of the quaternionic prolate spheroidal wave functions and to show that they can reach the extreme case in energy concentration problem both from the theoretical and experimental description. In particular, these functions are shown as an effective method for bandlimited signals extrapolation problem.

Facial Expression Classification Using Rotation Slepian-based Moment Invariants

Rotation moment invariants have been of great interest in image processing and pattern recognition. This paper presents a novel kind of rotation moment invariants based on the Slepian functions, which were originally introduced in the method of separation of variables for Helmholtz equations. They were first proposed for time series by Slepian and his coworkers in the 1960s. Recent studies have shown that these functions have an good performance in local approximation compared to other approximation basis. Motivated by the good approximation performance, we construct the Slepian-based moments and derive the rotation invariant. We not only theoretically prove the invariance, but also discuss the experiments on real data. The proposed rotation invariants are robust to noise and yield decent performance in facial expression classification.

Quaternion Fourier and Linear Canonical Inversion Theorems

The Quaternion Fourier transform (QFT) is one of the key tools in studying color image processing. Indeed, a deep understanding of the QFT has created the color images to be transformed as whole, rather than as color separated component. In addition, understanding the QFT paves the way for understanding other integral transform, such as the Quaternion Fractional Fourier transform (QFRFT), Quaternion linear canonical transform (QLCT) and Quaternion Wigner-Ville distribution. The aim of this paper is twofold: first to provide some of the theoretical background regarding the Quaternion bound variation function. We then apply it to derive the Quaternion Fourier and linear canonical inversion formulas. Secondly, to provide some in tuition for how the Quaternion Fourier and linear canonical inversion theorems work on the absolutely integrable function space.

Robust Signal Reconstruction Using the Prolate Spherical Wave Functions and Maximum Correntropy Criterion

Signal Reconstruction is one of the most important problem in signal processing. This paper proposes a novel signal reconstruction method based on the prolate spherical wave functions (PSWFs) and maximum correntropy criterion (MCC). The PSWFs are a kind of special functions, which have been proved having good performance in signal reconstruction. However, the existing PSWFs based reconstruction methods only consider the mean square error (MSE) criterion as the cost functions. The MSE criterion is sensitive to the non-Gaussian noise, since it is builded up by the Gaussian assumption. Therefore, for the impulsive noise or outliers, the MSE based reconstruction methods will lead to the large reconstruction error. The proposed MCC and PSWFs based robust signal reconstruction method can reduce the impact of large and non-Gaussian noise. The experimental results on the synthetic signals show that the proposed method can improve the MSE with notable gains in most cases.
