Smoothness filtration of the magnitude complex

We introduce an intrinsic filtration to the magnitude chain complex of a metric space, and study basic properties of the associated spectral sequence of the magnitude homology. As an application, the third magnitude homology of the circle is computed.

Crystallographic T-duality

We introduce the notion of crystallographic T-duality, inspired by the appearance of $K$-theory with graded equivariant twists in the study of topological crystalline materials. Besides giving a range of new topological T-dualities, it also unifies many previously known dualities, motivates generalisations of the Baum-Connes conjecture to graded groups, provides a powerful tool for computing topological phase classification groups, and facilitates the understanding of crystallographic bulk-boundary correspondences in physics.

Crystallographic bulk-edge correspondence: glide reflections and twisted mod 2 indices

A 2-torsion topological phase exists for Hamiltonians symmetric under the wallpaper group with glide reflection symmetry, corresponding to the unorientable cycle of the Klein bottle fundamental domain. We prove a mod 2 twisted Toeplitz index theorem, which implies a bulk-edge correspondence between this bulk phase and the exotic topological zero modes that it acquires along a boundary glide axis.

Differential geometric invariants for time-reversal symmetric Bloch-bundles II: The low dimensional "Quaternionic" case

This paper is devoted to the construction of differential geometric invariants for the classification of "Quaternionic" vector bundles. Provided that the base space is a smooth manifold of dimension two or three endowed with an involution that leaves fixed only a finite number of points, it is possible to prove that the Wess-Zumino term and the Chern-Simons invariant yield topological quantities able to distinguish between inequivalent realization of "Quaternionic" structures.

Many-body topological invariants for fermionic short-range entangled topological phases protected by antiunitary symmetries

We present a fully many-body formulation of topological invariants for various topological phases of fermions protected by antiunitary symmetry, which does not refer to single particle wave functions. For example, we construct the many-body $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant for time-reversal symmetric topological insulators in two spatial dimensions, which is a many-body counterpart of the Kane-Mele $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant written in terms of single-particle Bloch wave functions. We show that an important ingredient for the construction of the many-body topological invariants is a fermionic partial transpose which is basically the standard partial transpose equipped with a sign structure to account for anti-commuting property of fermion operators. We also report some basic results on various kinds of pin structures -- a key concept behind our strategy for constructing many-body topological invariants -- such as the obstructions, isomorphism classes, and Dirac quantization conditions.

Chiral vector bundles

This paper focuses on the study of a new category of vector bundles. The objects of this category, called chiral vector bundles, are pairs given by a complex vector bundle along with one of its automorphisms. We provide a classification for the homotopy equivalence classes of these objects based on the construction of a suitable classifying space. The computation of the cohomology of the latter allows us to introduce a proper set of characteristic cohomology classes: some of those just reproduce the ordinary Chern classes but there are also new odd-dimensional classes which take care of the extra topological information introduced by the chiral structure. Chiral vector bundles provide a geometric model for topological quantum systems in class AIII, namely for systems endowed with a (pseudo-)symmetry of chiral type. The classification of the chiral vector bundles over sphere and tori (explicitly computable up to dimension 4), recovers the commonly accepted classification for topological insulator of class AIII which is usually based on the K-group $K_1$. However, our classification turns out to be even richer since it takes care also for possible non-trivial Chern classes.

The cohomological nature of the Fu-Kane-Mele invariant

In this paper we generalize the definition of the FKMM-invariant introduced in [DG2] for the case of "Quaternionic" vector bundles over involutive base spaces endowed with free involution or with a non-finite fixed-point set. In [DG2] it has already be shown how the FKMM-invariant provides a cohomological description of the Fu-Kane-Mele index used to classify topological insulators in class AII. It follows that the FKMM-invariant described in this paper provides a cohomological generalization of the Fu-Kane-Mele index which is applicable to the classification of protected phases for other type of topological quantum systems (TQS) which are not necesarily related to models for topological insulators (e.g. the two-dimensional models of adiabatically perturbed systems discussed in [GR]). As a byproduct we provide the complete classification of "Quaternionic" vector bundles over a big class of low dimensional involutive spheres and tori.

Fu-Kane-Mele monopoles in semimetals

In semimetals with time-reversal symmetry, the interplay between Weyl points and Fu-Kane-Mele indices results in coexisting surface Dirac cones and Fermi arcs that are transmutable without a topological phase transition. We show that Weyl points act as a new type of monopole, and that their connectivity is essential for capturing the full topology of semimetals and their role as intermediaries of topological insulator transitions. The history of Weyl point creation-annihilation provides a simple and mathematically equivalent way to classify semimetals, and directly prefigures the surface state topology. We further predict the possibility of a topological Dirac cone on the interface between two Weyl semimetals.

Topological Crystalline Materials - General Formulation, Module Structure, and Wallpaper Groups -

We formulate topological crystalline materials on the basis of the twisted equivariant $K$-theory. Basic ideas of the twisted equivariant $K$-theory is explained with application to topological phases protected by crystalline symmetries in mind, and systematic methods of topological classification for crystalline materials are presented. Our formulation is applicable to bulk gapful topological crystalline insulators/superconductors and their gapless boundary and defect states, as well as bulk gapless topological materials such as Weyl and Dirac semimetals, and nodal superconductors. As an application of our formulation, we present a complete classification of topological crystalline surface states, in the absence of time-reversal invariance. The classification works for gapless surface states of three-dimensional insulators, as well as full gapped two-dimensional insulators. Such surface states and two-dimensional insulators are classified in a unified way by 17 wallpaper groups, together with the presence or the absence of (sublattice) chiral symmetry. We identify the topological numbers and their representations under the wallpaper group operation. We also exemplify the usefulness of our formulation in the classification of bulk gapless phases. We present a new class of Weyl semimetals and Weyl superconductors that are topologically protected by inversion symmetry.

Twists on the Torus Equivariant under the 2-Dimensional Crystallographic Point Groups

A twist is a datum playing a role of a local system for topological $K$-theory. In equivariant setting, twists are classified into four types according to how they are realized geometrically. This paper lists the possible types of twists for the torus with the actions of the point groups of all the 2-dimensional space groups (crystallographic groups), or equivalently, the torus with the actions of all the possible finite subgroups in its mapping class group. This is carried out by computing Borel's equivariant cohomology and the Leray-Serre spectral sequence. As a byproduct, the equivariant cohomology up to degree three is determined in all cases. The equivariant cohomology with certain local coefficients is also considered in relation to the twists of the Freed-Moore $K$-theory.

The FKMM-invariant in low dimension

In this paper we investigate the problem of the cohomological classification of "Quaternionic" vector bundles in low-dimension ($d\leqslant 3$). We show that there exists a characteristic classes $κ$, called the FKMM-invariant, which takes value in the relative equivariant Borel cohomology and completely classifies "Quaternionic" vector bundles in low-dimension. The main subject of the paper concerns a discussion about the surjectivity of $κ$.

Differential geometric invariants for time-reversal symmetric Bloch-bundles: the "Real" case

Topological quantum systems subjected to an even (resp. odd) time-reversal symmetry can be classified by looking at the related "Real" (resp. "Quaternionic") Bloch-bundles. If from one side the topological classification of these time-reversal vector bundle theories has been completely described in [DG1] for the "Real" case and in [DG2] for the "Quaternionic" case, from the other side it seems that a classification in terms of differential geometric invariants is still missing in the literature. With this article (and its companion [DG3]) we want to cover this gap. More precisely, we extend in an equivariant way the theory of connections on principal bundles and vector bundles endowed with a time-reversal symmetry. In the "Real" case we generalize the Chern-Weil theory and we showed that the assignment of a "Real" connection, along with the related differential Chern class and its holonomy, suffices for the classification of "Real" vector bundles in low dimensions.

Topology of nonsymmorphic crystalline insulators and superconductors

Topological classification in our previous paper [K. Shiozaki and M. Sato, Phys. Rev. B ${\bf 90}$, 165114 (2014)] is extended to nonsymmorphic crystalline insulators and superconductors. Using the twisted equivariant $K$-theory, we complete the classification of topological crystalline insulators and superconductors in the presence of additional order-two nonsymmorphic space group symmetries. The order-two nonsymmorphic space groups include half lattice translation with $Z_2$ flip, glide, two-fold screw, and their magnetic space groups. We find that the topological periodic table shows modulo-2 periodicity in the number of flipped coordinates under the order-two nonsymmorphic space group. It is pointed out that the nonsymmorphic space groups allow $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological phases even in the absence of time-reversal and/or particle-hole symmetries. Furthermore, the coexistence of the nonsymmorphic space group with the time-reversal and/or particle-hole symmetries provides novel $\mathbb{Z}_4$ topological phases, which have not been realized in ordinary topological insulators and superconductors. We present model Hamiltonians of these new topological phases and the analytic expression of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ topological invariants. The half lattice translation with $Z_2$ spin flip and glide symmetry are compatible with the existence of the boundary, leading to topological surface gapless modes protected by such order-two nonsymmorphic symmetries. We also discuss unique features of these gapless surface modes.

Classification of "Quaternionic" Bloch-bundles: Topological Quantum Systems of type AII

We provide a classification of type AII topological quantum systems in dimension d=1,2,3,4. Our analysis is based on the construction of a topological invariant, the FKMM-invariant, which completely classifies "Quaternionic" vector bundles (a.k.a. "symplectic" vector bundles) in dimension d<4. This invariant takes value in a proper equivariant cohomology theory and, in the case of examples of physical interest, it reproduces the familiar Fu-Kane-Mele index. In the case d=4 the classification requires a combined use of the FKMM-invariant and the second Chern class. Among the other things, we prove that the FKMM-invariant is a bona fide characteristic class for the category of "Quaternionic" vector bundles in the sense that it can be realized as the pullback of a universal topological invariant.

Z2-topology in nonsymmorphic crystalline insulators: Mobius twist in surface states

It has been known that an anti-unitary symmetry such as time-reversal or charge conjugation is needed to realize Z2 topological phases in non-interacting systems. Topological insulators and superconducting nanowires are representative examples of such Z2 topological matters. Here we report the first-known Z2 topological phase protected by only unitary symmetries. We show that the presence of a nonsymmorphic space group symmetry opens a possibility to realize Z2 topological phases without assuming any anti-unitary symmetry. The Z2 topological phases are constructed in various dimensions, which are closely related to each other by Hamiltonian mapping. In two and three dimensions, the Z2 phases have a surface consistent with the nonsymmorphic space group symmetry, and thus they support topological gapless surface states. Remarkably, the surface states have a unique energy dispersion with the Mobius twist, which identifies the Z2 phases experimentally. We also provide the relevant structure in the K-theory.

Classification of "Real" Bloch-bundles: Topological quantum systems of type AI

We provide a classification of type AI topological quantum systems in dimension d=1,2,3,4 which is based on the equivariant homotopy properties of "Real" vector bundles. This allows us to produce a fine classification able to take care also of the non stable regime which is usually not accessible via K-theoretic techniques. We prove the absence of non-trivial phases for one-band AI free or periodic quantum particle systems in each spatial dimension by inspecting the second equivariant cohomology group which classifies "Real" line bundles. We also show that the classification of "Real" line bundles suffices for the complete classification of AI topological quantum systems in dimension d<4. In dimension d=4 the determination of different topological phases (for free or periodic systems) is fixed by the second "Real Chern class which provides an even labeling identifiable with the degree of a suitable map. Finally, we provide explicit realizations of non trivial 4-dimensional free models for each given topological degree.
