Thermally-driven reorientation of the Néel vector in altermagnetic MnTe

Altermagnets are novel magnetic systems that possess a spin-polarized electronic band structure without a net magnetic moment, making them promising for device applications. Hexagonal MnTe, a prototypical altermagnet, arguably exhibits the most properties consistent with theoretical predictions, including an anomalous Hall effect despite a vanishing net magnetization, and altermagnetinduced electronic band splitting. However, fundamental questions remain, including why some effects only appear significantly below the magnetic ordering temperature. Here, we resolve this discrepancy by revealing a reorientation of the Néel vector in single-crystalline MnTe. The Néel vector points 30° from the a-axis at low $T$, before aligning directly with the a-axis around $T\simeq 260$ K. We attribute this to single-ion anisotropy, which depends on temperature-dependent lattice parameters. We obtained these results using muon-spin spectroscopy, magnetization measurements, and X-ray diffraction; we show that the findings are consistent with neutron diffraction. Manipulating this effect, for example through strain, could unlock sensitive electronic detection schemes for external stimuli, paving the way for functional altermagnetic devices.

Room-temperature antiferromagnetic resonance in NaMnAs

We report on antiferromagnetic resonance experiments in bulk tetragonal NaMnAs -- a room-temperature antiferromagnetic semiconductor. Our results corroborate previous ab initio studies, which propose that NaMnAs is an easy-axis antiferromagnet with the Néel vector oriented along the tetragonal axis. At $ B = 0 $, we find a single antiferromagnetic resonance line at 7 meV and associate it with a doubly degenerate ($ k = 0 $) magnon mode. Its energy softens considerably with increasing $ T $, but remains clearly visible in the data up to room temperature. From the experimental data, we estimate the single-ion anisotropy of the Mn ions in NaMnAs in the range 0.1-0.2 meV, a value that is relatively large compared to other manganese-based antiferromagnets.

Sliding ferroelectricity in a bulk misfit layer compound (PbS)$_{1.18}$VS$_2$

Twisted heterostructures of two-dimensional crystals can create a moiré landscape, which can change the properties of it's parent crystals. However, the reproducibility of manual stacking is far from perfect. Here, the alternated stacking of post-transition metal monochalcogenides and transition metal dichalcogenides in misfit layer compound crystals is used as a moiré generator. Using X-ray diffraction, the presence of twins with a well-defined small twist angle between them is shown. Due to the twist, the surface electrical potential from the induced ferroelectricity is observed using scanning probe microscopy and electron microscopy.

Landau level spectroscopy of PbSnSe topological crystalline insulator

We report on an infrared magneto-spectroscopy study of Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se, a topological crystalline insulator. We have examined a set of samples, all in the inverted regime of electronic bands, with the tin composition varying from $x=0.2$ to $0.33$. Our analysis shows that the observed response, composed of a series of interband inter-Landau level excitations, can be interpreted and modelled using the relativistic-like Hamiltonian for three-dimensional massive Dirac electrons, expanded to include diagonal quadratic terms that impose band inversion. In our data, we have not found any clear signature of massless electron states that are present on the surface of Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se crystals in the inverted regime. Reasons for this unexpected result are discussed.

Extreme narrow magnetic domain walls in U ferromagnets: The UCoGa case

Surface magnetic domains of a UCoGa single crystal during magnetization/demagnetization processes in increasing/decreasing magnetic fields were investigated by means of magnetic-force-microscopy (MFM) images at low temperatures. The observed domain structure is typical for a ferromagnet with strong uniaxial anisotropy. The evolution of magnetic domains during cooling of the crystal below TC has also been manifested by MFM images. Analysis of the available data reveals that the high uniaxial magnetocrystalline energy in combination with the relatively small ferromagnetic exchange interaction in UCoGa gives rise to the formation of very narrow domain walls formed by the pairs of the nearest U neighbor ions with antiparallel magnetic moments within the basal plane. Since the very high anisotropy energy is a common feature of the majority of the uniaxial U ferromagnets, analogous domain-wall properties are expected for all these materials.

Magnetic domain wall motion in SrRuO$_3$ thin films

Influence of substrate miscut on magnetization dynamics in SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) thin films was studied. Two films were grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates with high ($\sim1^{\circ}$) and low ($\sim0.1^{\circ}$) miscut angles, respectively. As expected, high miscut angle leads to suppression of multi-variant growth. By means of SQUID magnetometry, comparable relaxation effects were observed in both the multi-variant and the nearly single-variant sample. Differences in the magnetization reversal process were revealed by magnetic force microscopy. It showed that the multi-variant growth leads to higher density of defects acting as pinning or nucleation sites for magnetic domains, which consequently results in deterioration of magnetic properties. It was demonstrated that the use of high miscut substrate is important for fabrication of high quality SRO thin films with low density of crystallographic defects and excellent magnetic properties.

Magnetic Excitations in Non-Collinear Antiferromagnetic Weyl Semimetal $\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$

$\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$ has recently attracted considerable attention as a magnetic Weyl semimetal exhibiting concomitant transport anomalies at room temperature. The topology of the electronic bands, their relation to the magnetic ground state and their nonzero Berry curvature lie at the heart of the problem. The examination of the full magnetic Hamiltonian reveals otherwise hidden aspects of these unusual physical properties. Here, we report the full spin wave spectra of $\mathsf{Mn_{3}Sn}$ measured over a wide momentum - energy range by the inelastic neutron scattering technique. Using a linear spin wave theory, we determine a suitable magnetic Hamiltonian which not only explains the experimental results but also stabilizes the low-temperature helical phase, consistent with our DFT calculations. The effect of this helical ordering on topological band structures is further examined using a tight-binding method, which confirms the elimination of Weyl points in the helical phase. Our work provides a rare example of the intimate coupling between the electronic and spin degrees of freedom for a magnetic Weyl semimetal system.

The stability and physical properties of the tetragonal phase of bulk CuMnAs antiferromagnet

The effect of Cu substitution on the stability of the CuMnAs tetragonal phase was studied both experimentally and by ab initio calculations. Polycrystalline samples with various compositions Cu$_{1+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$As $(x = 0 - 0.5)$ were synthetized. The tetragonal phase of CuMnAs is found to be stabilized by substituting Mn by Cu in the amount of $x$ ~ 0.1 or higher. This observation is supported by ab initio calculations of the total energy of the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases; with increasing Cu content the tetragonal phase is favoured. Small variations of composition thus allow to grow selectively one of these two phases with distinct and unique features for antiferromagnetic spintronics. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and differential scanning calorimetry have shown that the tetragonal Cu$_{1+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$As has an antiferromagnetic behaviour with the maximum Néel temperature $T_N$ = 507 K for the highest Mn content samples, decreasing with the decreasing Mn content.

Neutron Diffraction Study on Single-crystalline UAu${_2}$Si$_2$

Magnetic structure of tetragonal UAu$_2$Si$_2$ was investigated by single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments. Below $T_{\rm N}$ = 20 K it orders antiferromagnetically with a propagation vector of $k = (2/3, 0, 0)$ and magnetic moments of uranium ions pointing along the tetragonal $c$-axis. Weak signs of the presence of a ferromagnetic component of magnetic moment were traced out.Taking into account a group theory calculation and experimental results of magnetization and $^{29}$Si-NMR, the magnetic structure is determined to be a squared-up antiferromagnetic structure, with a stacking sequence ($+ + -$) of the ferromagnetic $ac$-plane sheets along the $a$-axis. This result highlights similar magnetic correlations in UAu$_2$Si$_2$ and isostructural URu$_2$Si$_2$.

Peculiar Magnetism of UAu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$

Single-crystalline UAu$_2$Si$_2$ has been grown by a floating-zone melting method, and its magnetic, thermal and transport properties have been investigated through measurements of magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity to reveal its peculiar magnetism. It is shown that UAu$_2$Si$_2$ undergoes a second-order phase transition at \tm = 19 K, which had been believed to be ferromagnetic ordering in the literature, from a paramagnetic phase to an uncompensated antiferromagnetic phase with spontaneous magnetization along the tetragonal $c$-axis (the easy magnetization direction). The magnetic entropy analysis points to the itinerant character of 5f electrons in the magnetic ordered state of UAu$_2$Si$_2$ with large enhancement of the electronic specific heat coefficient of $γ$ $\sim$ 150 mJ/K$^2$mol at 2 K. It also reveals the relatively isotropic crystalline electric field effect of this compound, with contrast to the other relative isostructural compounds. The observed magnetization curves strongly suggest that there is a parasitic ferromagnetic component developing below $\sim$ 50 K in high coercivity with the easy axis along the tetragonal $c$-axis. The results are discussed in the context of evolution of magnetism within the entire family of isostructural U$T_2$Si$_2$ compounds.

Magnetism, Superconductivity and Quantum Criticality in the Multi-Site Cerium Heavy Fermion Compound Ce3PtIn11

The properties of the novel heavy fermion superconductor Ce$_3$PtIn$_{11}$ are investigated by thermodynamic and transport measurements at ambient and under hydrostatic pressure. At ambient pressure the compound exhibits two successive magnetic transitions at $T_1$ $\approx$ 2.2 K and $T_{\rm N}$ $\approx$ 2 K into antiferromagnetically ordered states and enters into a heavy fermion superconducting phase below $T_{\rm c}$ $\approx$ 0.32 K. The coexistence of long-range magnetic order and superconductivity is discussed in the context of the existence of the two crystallographically inequivalent Ce-sites in the unit cell of Ce$_3$PtIn$_{11}$. The experimental data allow us to construct the pressure-temperature phase diagram.
