CFTs on Squashed Spheres and the Thermal Effective Action

We study three-dimensional CFTs on compact Euclidean manifolds in two complementary limits: small deformations of the round $S^3$ and the small-fiber, large-squashing limit of Seifert manifolds. Near the round sphere, conformal perturbation theory expresses the free-energy response through integrated stress-tensor correlators. We derive a harmonic-space formula for the universal quadratic response to arbitrary metric squashing and show that it is proportional to the $c_T$ coefficient of the stress-tensor two-point function. For unitary CFTs this establishes that the sphere free energy is a local maximum in the space of metric deformations. This result extends to conserved spin-$s$ currents, whose quadratic response alternates in sign. For the specific case of squashing the Hopf fiber, we find an explicit form for the cubic response, and in addition obtain the leading correction to the two-point function of scalar operators. In the small-fiber limit, corresponding to the large temperature regime of the CFT, the partition function is governed by a two-dimensional thermal effective action constructed out of the Weyl-rescaled base metric and a Kaluza--Klein field strength. The thermal effective action relates CFT free energies on different backgrounds, including squashed Lens spaces, which we discuss in detail. We also explicitly determine the Wilson coefficients of this effective action, to various orders in the high-temperature expansion, for free fields, the large-$N$ critical O($N$) model, and holographic CFTs.

Quasinormal modes and complexity in saddle-dominated SU(N) spin systems

We study SU($N$) spin systems that mimic the behavior of particles in $N$-dimensional de Sitter space for $N=2,3$. Their Hamiltonians describe a dynamical system with hyperbolic fixed points, leading to emergent quasinormal modes at the quantum level. These manifest as quasiparticle peaks in the density of states. For a particle in 2-dimensional de Sitter, we find both principal and complementary series densities of states from a PT-symmetric version of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, having two hyperbolic fixed points in the classical phase space. We then study different spectral and dynamical properties of this class of models, including level spacing statistics, two-point functions, squared commutators, spectral form factor, Krylov operator and state complexity. We find that, even though the early-time properties of these quantities are governed by the saddle points -- thereby in some cases mimicking corresponding properties of chaotic systems, a close look at the late-time behavior reveals the integrable nature of the system.

An entropic puzzle in periodic dilaton gravity and DSSYK

We study 2d dilaton gravity theories with a periodic potential, with special emphasis on sine dilaton gravity, which is holographically dual to double-scaled SYK. The periodicity of the potentials implies a symmetry under (discrete) shifts in the momentum conjugate to the length of geodesic slices. This results in divergences. The correct definition is to gauge this symmetry. This discretizes the geodesic lengths. Lengths below a certain threshold are null states. Because of these null states, the entropy deviates drastically from Bekenstein-Hawking and the Hilbert space becomes finite dimensional. The spacetimes have a periodic radial coordinate. These are toy models of 2d quantum cosmology with a normalizable wavefunction. We study two limiting dualities: one between flat space quantum gravity and the Heisenberg algebra, and one between topological gravity and the Gaussian matrix integral. We propose an exact density of states for certain classes of periodic dilaton gravity models.

Wormholes, branes and finite matrices in sine dilaton gravity

We compute the double trumpet in sine dilaton gravity via WdW quantization. The wormhole size is discretized. The wormhole amplitude matches the spectral correlation of a finite-cut matrix integral, where matrices have large but finite dimensions. This strongly suggests an identification of the sine dilaton gravity theory with the q-deformed JT gravity matrix integral. At the very least, it captures all universal content of that matrix model. The disk decomposes into the physical (gauge invariant) solutions of the WdW equation, which are trumpets with discrete sizes. This decomposition modifies the usual no-boundary wavefunction to a normalizable one in sine dilaton gravity. We furthermore present an exact quantization of sine dilaton gravity with open and closed end of the world branes. These EOW branes correspond with FZZT branes for the two Liouville theories that make up sine dilaton gravity. The WdW equation implies redundancies in this space of branes, leaving a one parameter family of gauge invariant branes. One gauge choice corresponds with branes discussed by Okuyama in the context of chord diagrams and of DSSYK. Legendre transforming the EOW brane amplitude reproduces the trumpet, independent of the WdW quantization calculation. One could read our work as fleshing out the Hilbert space of closed universes in sine dilaton gravity.

Coherent spin states and emergent de Sitter quasinormal modes

As a toy model for the microscopic description of matter in de Sitter space, we consider a Hamiltonian acting on the spin-j representation of SU(2). This is a model with a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, from which quasinormal modes emerge in the large-spin limit. The path integral over coherent spin states can be evaluated at the semiclassical level and from it we find the single-particle de Sitter density of states, including 1/j corrections. Along the way, we discuss the use of quasinormal modes in quantum mechanics, starting from the paradigmatic upside-down harmonic oscillator.

Low-temperature thermal corrections to a superfluid's equation of state

Using effective field theory methods, we calculate the low-temperature phonon thermal partition function for a generic superfluid, thus providing the leading thermal corrections to a superfluid's equation of state, thermodynamic quantities, and conserved currents. We confirm the correctness of the classic two-fluid model by matching to the effective field theory for that model. Where there is an overlap, our results agree with those of Carter and Langlois, which were derived by different methods. We also discuss generalizations and special cases, including the non-relativistic limit and the conformal superfluid.

Black Hole Horizon Edge Partition Functions

We extend a formula for 1-loop black hole determinants by Denef, Hartnoll, and Sachdev (DHS) to spinning fields on any $(d+1)$-dimensional static spherically symmetric black hole. By carefully analyzing the regularity condition imposed on the Euclidean eigenfunctions, we reveal an unambiguous bulk-edge split in the 1-loop Euclidean partition function for tensor fields of arbitrary integer spin: the bulk part captures the "renormalized" thermal canonical partition function recently discussed in arXiv:2207.07024; the edge part is related to quasinormal modes (QNMs) that fail to analytically continue to a subset of Euclidean modes with enhanced fall-offs near the origin. Since the edge part takes the form of a path integral on $S^{d-1}$, this suggests that these are associated with degrees of freedom living on the bifurcation surface in the Lorentzian two-sided black hole geometry. For massive higher spin on static BTZ and massive vector on Nariai black holes, we find that the edge partition function is related to the QNMs with lowest overtone numbers.

Apparently superluminal superfluids

We consider the superfluid phase of a specific renormalizable relativistic quantum field theory. We prove that, within the regime of validity of perturbation theory and of the superfluid effective theory, there are consistent and regular vortex solutions where the superfluid's velocity field as traditionally defined smoothly interpolates between zero and arbitrarily large superluminal values. We show that this solution is free of instabilities and of superluminal excitations. We show that, in contrast, a generic vortex solution for an ordinary fluid does develop an instability if the velocity field becomes superluminal. All this questions the characterization of a superfluid velocity field as the actual velocity of ``something".

Black Hole Scattering and Partition Functions

When computing the ideal gas thermal canonical partition function for a scalar outside a black hole horizon, one encounters the divergent single-particle density of states (DOS) due to the continuous nature of the normal mode spectrum. Recasting the Lorentzian field equation into an effective 1D scattering problem, we argue that the scattering phases encode non-trivial information about the DOS and can be extracted by "renormalizing" the DOS with respect to a reference. This defines a renormalized free energy up to an arbitrary additive constant. Interestingly, the 1-loop Euclidean path integral, as computed by the Denef-Hartnoll-Sachdev formula, fixes the reference free energy to be that on a Rindler space, and the renormalized DOS captures the quasinormal modes for the scalar. We support these claims with the examples of scalars on static BTZ, Nariai black holes and the de Sitter static patch. For black holes in asymptotically flat space, the renormalized DOS is captured by the phase of the transmission coefficient whose magnitude squared is the greybody factor. We comment on possible connections with recent works from an algebraic point of view.

Characters, quasinormal modes, and Schwinger pairs in $dS_2$ with flux

An integral representation of the 1-loop partition function for charged scalars and spinors, minimally coupled to a uniform $U(1)$ field on $S^2$, is given in terms of $SO(1,2)$ Harish-Chandra group characters and evaluated exactly in terms of Hurwitz $ζ$-functions. Analytically continuing the $U(1)$ field, we interpret the path integrals as quasicanonical partition functions in $dS_2$ with an electric field. The character itself is obtained as a trace over states living at the future boundary of de Sitter and has a quasinormal mode expansion. The imaginary part of the partition function captures Schwinger pair creation in the static patch at finite temperature. The thermal enhancement is most noticeable for scalar masses below Hubble and leads to non-monotonicity of the current as a function of the field. This parameter range, when dimensionally reducing from a charged or rotating Nariai spacetime, is excluded by Swampland-inspired bounds. Around the $AdS_2$ black hole, in contrast to $dS_2$, there is a threshold to pair creation.

Soft theorems for boosts and other time symmetries

We derive soft theorems for theories in which time symmetries -- symmetries that involve the transformation of time, an example of which are Lorentz boosts -- are spontaneously broken. The soft theorems involve unequal-time correlation functions with the insertion of a soft Goldstone in the far past. Explicit checks are provided for several examples, including the effective theory of a relativistic superfluid and the effective field theory of inflation. We discuss how in certain cases these unequal-time identities capture information at the level of observables that cannot be seen purely in terms of equal-time correlators of the field alone. We also discuss when it is possible to phrase these soft theorems as identities involving equal-time correlators.

Towards an "AdS$_1/$CFT$_0$" correspondence from the D$(-1)/$D$7$ system?

We argue that a type IIB Euclidean supergravity solution of the form $\mathbb{R}\times S^1\times \mathbb{T}^8$ with imaginary self-dual $F_1$ flux through $\mathbb{R}\times S^1$ belongs to the chain of $AdS_d\times S^d\times \mathbb{T}^{10-2d}$ vacua with (imaginary) self-dual $F_d$ flux, where $d\leq 5$. Such vacua come from the near-horizon of D$(d-2)$/D$(8-d)$ branes and are supersymmetric for odd values of $d$. For $d=1$ we speculate that the hallmark of conformal symmetry for the matrix model dual is a vanishing free energy. The matrix dual was recently constructed by arXiv:2101.01732 by adding matrix interactions coming from strings stretching between the D$(-1)$ and D$7$ branes to the IKKT matrix model. We find that the corresponding supergravity solution indeed has vanishing on-shell action. Specific $F_5$ fluxes need to be switched on as a consequence of (a T-dual version of) the Hanany-Witten effect.

Mass and spin for classical strings in $dS_3$

We demonstrate that all rigidly rotating strings with center of mass at the origin of the $dS_3$ static patch satisfy the Higuchi bound. This extends the observation of Noumi et al. for the open GKP-like string to all solutions of the Larsen-Sanchez class. We argue that strings violating the bound end up expanding towards the horizon and provide a numerical example. Adding point masses to the open string only increases the mass/spin ratio. For segmented strings, we write the conserved quantities, invariant under Gubser's algebraic evolution equation, in terms of discrete lightcone coordinates describing kink collisions. Randomly generated strings are found to have a tendency to escape through the horizon that is mostly determined by their energy. For rapidly rotating segmented strings with mass/spin $<$ 1, the kink collisions eventually become causally disconnected. Finally we consider the scenario of cosmic strings captured by a black hole in dS and find that horizon friction can make the strings longer.

Holographic Uniformization and Black Hole Attractors

We establish an attractor mechanism for the horizon metric of asymptotically locally AdS4 supersymmetric black holes. The Kähler moduli of the metric are not fixed in the asymptotic region, however supersymmetry dictates that the near horizon metric must be the constant curvature one. We show how this mechanism is realized in detail for four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets by focusing on the STU model. A similar analysis is performed for gauged supergravity theories in five, six, and seven dimensions where we establish the same mechanism by extending previous results on holographic uniformization.
