Error analysis of a finite element scheme for parametric mean curvature flow based on the DeTurck trick

The paper is concerned with the error analysis of a numerical scheme for the approximation of parametric mean curvature flow. The scheme we study is based on a reparametrization using the DeTurck trick and was proposed by Elliott and Fritz in [15]. In the semidiscrete case, for a spatial discretization by finite elements of order $k \geq 2$ we prove an optimal $H^1$-error estimate for the position vector. We present numerical experiments that confirm this error bound and demonstrate that the scheme has good properties with respect to the distribution of mesh points as already observed in [15].

On the basin of attraction for the free boundary free elastic flow

The free boundary free elastic flow is the steepest descent gradient flow for the elastic energy of curves meeting parallel lines perpendicularly. In this article we prove that the straight line has, measured in Euler's scale-invariant bending energy, a basin of attraction at least to the level $1.9615\, \pi$. We show that our method of proof cannot be pushed to the previously conjectured level $2\pi$, and in addition present numerical evidence that this conjecture may in fact be false.

Error estimates for a surface finite element method for anisotropic mean curvature flow

Error estimates are proved for an evolving surface finite element semi-discretization for anisotropic mean curvature flow of closed surfaces. For the geometric surface flow, a system coupling the anisotropic evolution law to parabolic evolution equations for the surface normal and normal velocity is derived, which then serve as the basis for the proposed numerical method. The algorithm for anisotropic mean curvature flow is proved to be convergent in the $H^1$-norm with optimal-order for finite elements of degree at least two. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate and complement our theoretical results.

Quasi-optimal error estimate for the approximation of the elastic flow of inextensible curves

A space-discretization for the elastic flow of inextensible curves is devised and quasi-optimal convergence of the corresponding semi-discrete problem is proved for a suitable discretization of the nonlinear inextensibility constraint. Further a fully discrete time-stepping scheme that incorporates this constraint is proposed and unconditional stability and convergence of the discrete scheme are proved. Finally some numerical simulations are used to verify the obtained results experimentally.

Second order in time finite element schemes for curve shortening flow and curve diffusion

We prove optimal error bounds for a second order in time finite element approximation of curve shortening flow in possibly higher codimension. In addition, we introduce a second order in time method for curve diffusion. Both schemes are based on variational formulations of strictly parabolic systems of partial differential equations that feature a tangential velocity which under discretization is beneficial for the mesh quality. In each time step only two linear systems need to be solved. Numerical experiments demonstrate second order convergence as well as asymptotic equidistribution.

On the numerical approximation of hyperbolic mean curvature flows for surfaces

The paper addresses the numerical approximation of two variants of hyperbolic mean curvature flow of surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$. For each evolution law we propose both a finite element method, as well as a finite difference scheme in the case of axially symmetric surfaces. We present a number of numerical simulations, including convergence tests as well as simulations suggesting the onset of singularities.

Finite element schemes with tangential motion for fourth order geometric curve evolutions in arbitrary codimension

We introduce novel finite element schemes for curve diffusion and elastic flow in arbitrary codimension. The schemes are based on a variational form of a system that includes a specifically chosen tangential motion. We derive optimal $L^2$- and $H^1$-error bounds for continuous-in-time semidiscrete finite element approximations that use piecewise linear elements. In addition, we consider fully discrete schemes and, in the case of curve diffusion, prove unconditional stability for it. Finally, we present several numerical simulations, including some convergence experiments that confirm the derived error bounds. The presented simulations suggest that the tangential motion leads to equidistribution in practice.

Convergence of a steepest descent algorithm in shape optimisation using $W^{1,\infty}$ functions

Built upon previous work of the authors in (Deckelnick, Herbert, and Hinze, ESAIM: COCV 28 (2022)), we present a general shape optimisation framework based on the method of mappings in the $W^{1,\infty}$ topology together with a suitable finite element discretisation. For the numerical solution of the respective discrete shape optimisation problems we propose a steepest descent minimisation algorithm with Armijo-Goldstein stepsize rule. We show that the sequence generated by this descent method globally converges, and under mild assumptions also, that every accumulation point of this sequence is a stationary point of the shape functional. Moreover, for the mesh discretisation parameter tending to zero we under mild assumptions prove convergence of the discrete stationary shapes in the Hausdorff complementary metric. To illustrate our approach we present a selection of numerical examples for PDE constrained shape optimisation problems, where we include numerical convergence studies which support our analytical findings.

Discrete anisotropic curve shortening flow in higher codimension

We introduce a novel formulation for the evolution of parametric curves by anisotropic curve shortening flow in ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\geq2$. The reformulation hinges on a suitable manipulation of the parameterization's tangential velocity, leading to a strictly parabolic differential equation. Moreover, the derived equation is in divergence form, giving rise to a natural variational numerical method. For a fully discrete finite element approximation based on piecewise linear elements we prove optimal error estimates. Numerical simulations confirm the theoretical results and demonstrate the practicality of the method.

Discrete hyperbolic curvature flow in the plane

Hyperbolic curvature flow is a geometric evolution equation that in the plane can be viewed as the natural hyperbolic analogue of curve shortening flow. It was proposed by Gurtin and Podio-Guidugli (1991) to model certain wave phenomena in solid-liquid interfaces. We introduce a semidiscrete finite difference method for the approximation of hyperbolic curvature flow and prove error bounds for natural discrete norms. We also present numerical simulations, including the onset of singularities starting from smooth strictly convex initial data.

A novel finite element approximation of anisotropic curve shortening flow

We extend the DeTurck trick from the classical isotropic curve shortening flow to the anisotropic setting. Here the anisotropic energy density is allowed to depend on space, which allows an interpretation in the context of Finsler metrics, giving rise to e.g.\ geodesic curvature flow in Riemannian manifolds. Assuming that the density is strictly convex and smooth, we introduce a novel weak formulation for anisotropic curve shortening flow. We then derive an optimal $H^1$--error bound for a continuous-in-time semidiscrete finite element approximation that uses piecewise linear elements. In addition, we consider some fully practical fully discrete schemes and prove their unconditional stability. Finally, we present several numerical simulations, including some convergence experiments that confirm the derived error bound, as well as applications to crystalline curvature flow and geodesic curvature flow.

PDE constrained shape optimisation with first-order and Newton-type methods in the $W^{1,\infty}$ topology

We present a general shape optimisation framework based on the method of mappings in the $W^{1,\infty}$ topology. We propose steepest descent and Newton-like minimisation algorithms for the numerical solution of the respective shape optimisation problems. Our work is built upon previous work of the authors in (Deckelnick, Herbert, and Hinze, ESAIM: COCV 28 (2022)), where a $W^{1,\infty}$ framework for star-shaped domains is proposed. To illustrate our approach we present a selection of PDE constrained shape optimisation problems and compare our findings to results from so far classical Hilbert space methods and recent $p$-approximations.

An unconditionally stable finite element scheme for anisotropic curve shortening flow

Based on a recent novel formulation of parametric anisotropic curve shortening flow, we analyse a fully discrete numerical method of this geometric evolution equation. The method uses piecewise linear finite elements in space and a backward Euler approximation in time. We establish existence and uniqueness of a discrete solution, as well as an unconditional stability property. Some numerical computations confirm the theoretical results and demonstrate the practicality of our method.

A novel $W^{1,\infty}$ approach to shape optimisation with Lipschitz domains

This article introduces a novel method for the implementation of shape optimisation with Lipschitz domains. We propose to use the shape derivative to determine deformation fields which represent steepest descent directions of the shape functional in the $W^{1,\infty}-$ topology. The idea of our approach is demonstrated for shape optimisation of $n$-dimensional star-shaped domains, which we represent as functions defined on the unit $(n-1)$-sphere. In this setting we provide the specific form of the shape derivative and prove the existence of solutions to the underlying shape optimisation problem. Moreover, we show the existence of a direction of steepest descent in the $W^{1,\infty}-$ topology. We also note that shape optimisation in this context is closely related to the $\infty-$Laplacian, and to optimal transport, where we highlight the latter in the numerics section. We present several numerical experiments in two dimensions illustrating that our approach seems to be superior over a widely used Hilbert space method in the considered examples, in particular in developing optimised shapes with corners.

Error analysis for a finite difference scheme for axisymmetric mean curvature flow of genus-0 surfaces

We consider a finite difference approximation of mean curvature flow for axisymmetric surfaces of genus zero. A careful treatment of the degeneracy at the axis of rotation for the one dimensional partial differential equation for a parameterization of the generating curve allows us to prove error bounds with respect to discrete $L^2$- and $H^1$-norms for a fully discrete approximation. The theoretical results are confirmed with the help of numerical convergence experiments. We also present numerical simulations for some genus-0 surfaces, including for a non-embedded self-shrinker for mean curvature flow.

Finite element error analysis for a system coupling surface evolution to diffusion on the surface

We consider a numerical scheme for the approximation of a system that couples the evolution of a two--dimensional hypersurface to a reaction--diffusion equation on the surface. The surfaces are assumed to be graphs and evolve according to forced mean curvature flow. The method uses continuous, piecewise linear finite elements in space and a backward Euler scheme in time. Assuming the existence of a smooth solution we prove optimal error bounds both in $L^\infty(L^2)$ and in $L^2(H^1)$. We present several numerical experiments that confirm our theoretical findings and apply the method in order to simulate diffusion induced grain boundary motion.

A Novel $p$-Harmonic Descent Approach Applied to Fluid Dynamic Shape Optimization

We introduce a novel method for the implementation of shape optimziation in fluid dynamics applications, where we propose to use the shape derivative to determine deformation fields with the help of the $p-$ Laplacian for $p > 2$. This approach is closely related to the computation of steepest descent directions of the shape functional in the $W^{1,\infty}-$ topology. Our approach is demonstrated for shape optimization related to drag-minimal free floating bodies. The method is validated against existing approaches with respect to convergence of the optimization algorithm, the obtained shape, and regarding the quality of the computational grid after large deformations. Our numerical results strongly indicate that shape optimization related to the $W^{1,\infty}$-topology -- though numerically more demanding -- seems to be superior over the classical approaches invoking Hilbert space methods, concerning the convergence, the obtained shapes and the mesh quality after large deformations, in particular when the optimal shape features sharp corners.
