Quantum Zeno effect in parameter estimation

The quantum Zeno effect freezes the evolution of a quantum system subject to frequent measure- ments. We apply a Fisher information analysis to show that because of this effect, a closed quantum system should be probed as rarely as possible while a dissipative quantum systems should be probed at specifically determined intervals to yield the optimal estimation of parameters governing the sys- tem dynamics. With a Bayesian analysis we show that a few frequent measurements are needed to identify the parameter region within which the Fisher information analysis applies

Intensity and amplitude correlations in the fluorescence from atoms with interacting Rydberg states

We explore the fluorescence signals from a pair of atoms driven towards Rydberg states on a three-level ladder transition. The dipole--dipole interactions between Rydberg excited atoms significantly distort the dark state and electromagnetically induced transparency behavior observed with independent atoms and, thus, their steady state light emission. We calculate and analyze the temporal correlations between intensities and amplitudes of the signals emitted by the atoms and explain their origin in the atomic Rydberg state interactions.

Is macroscopic entanglement a typical trait of many-particle quantum states?

We elucidate the relationship between Schrödinger-cat-like macroscopicity and geometric entanglement, and argue that these quantities are not interchangeable. While both properties are lost due to decoherence, we show that macroscopicity is rare in uniform and in so-called random physical ensembles of pure quantum states, despite possibly large geometric entanglement. In contrast, permutation-symmetric pure states feature rather low geometric entanglement and strong and robust macroscopicity.

Correlation functions and conditioned quantum dynamics in photodetection theory

Correlations in photodetection signals from quantum light sources are conventionally calculated by application of the source master equation and the quantum regression theorem. In this article we show how the conditioned dynamics, associated with the quantum theory of measurements, allows calculations and offers interpretations of the behaviour of the same quantities. Our theory is illustrated for photon counting and field-amplitude measurements, and we show, in particular, how transient correlations between field-amplitude measurements and later photon counting events can be accounted for by a recently developed theory of past quantum states of a monitored quantum system.

Squeezing and entanglement of density oscillations in a Bose-Einstein condensate

The dispersive interaction of atoms and a far-detuned light field allows nondestructive imaging of the density oscillations in Bose-Einstein condensates. Starting from a ground state condensate, we investigate how the measurement back action leads to squeezing and entanglement of the quantized density oscillations. In particular, we show that properly timed, stroboscopic imaging and feedback can be used to selectively address specific eigenmodes and avoid excitation of non-targeted modes of the system.

Double-Fock Superposition Interferometry for Differential Diagnosis of Decoherence

Interferometric signals are degraded by decoherence, which encompasses dephasing, mixing and any distinguishing which-path information. These three paradigmatic processes are fundamentally different, but, for coherent, single-photon and $N00N$-states, they degrade interferometric visibility in the very same way, which impedes the diagnosis of the cause for reduced visibility in a single experiment. We introduce a versatile formalism for many-boson interferometry based on double-sided Feynman diagrams, which we apply to a protocol for differential decoherence diagnosis: Twin-Fock states |N,N> with $N \ge 2$ reveal to which extent decoherence is due to path distinguishability or to mixing, while double-Fock superpositions $|N:M> = (|N,M> + |M,N>)/\sqrt{2} $ with $N > M >0$ additionally witness the degree of dephasing. Hence, double-Fock superposition interferometry permits the differential diagnosis of decoherence processes in a single experiment, indispensable for the assessment of interferometers.

Parameter estimation by multi-channel photon counting

The physical parameters governing the dynamics of a light emitting quantum system can be estimated from the photon counting signal. The information available in the full detection record can be analysed by means of the distribution of waiting times between detection events. Our theory allows calculation of the asymptotic, long time behaviour of the sensitivity limit, and it applies to emission processes with branching towards different final states accompanied by the emission of distinguishable photons. We illustrate the theory by application to a laser driven $Λ$-type atom.

Filtering single atoms from Rydberg blockaded mesoscopic ensembles

We propose an efficient method to filter out single atoms from trapped ensembles with unknown number of atoms. The method employs stimulated adiabatic passage to reversibly transfer a single atom to the Rydberg state which blocks subsequent Rydberg excitation of all the other atoms within the ensemble. This triggers the excitation of Rydberg blockaded atoms to short lived intermediate states and their subsequent decay to untrapped states. Using an auxiliary microwave field to carefully engineer the dissipation, we obtain a nearly deterministic single-atom source. Our method is applicable to small atomic ensembles in individual microtraps and in lattice arrays.

Adiabatic tracking of quantum many-body dynamics

The nonadiabatic dynamics of a many-body system driven through a quantum critical point can be controlled using counterdiabatic driving, where the formation of excitations is suppressed by assisting the dynamics with auxiliary multiple-body nonlocal interactions. We propose an alternative scheme which circumvents practical challenges to realize shortcuts to adiabaticity in mesoscopic systems by tailoring the functional form of the auxiliary counterdiabatic interactions. A driving scheme resorting in few-body short-range interactions is shown to generate an effectively adiabatic dynamics.

Multi-frequency modes in superconducting resonators: Bridging frequency gaps in off-resonant couplings

A Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) inserted in a superconducting waveguide resonator imposes current and voltage boundary conditions that makes it suitable as a tuning element for the resonator modes. If such a SQUID element is subject to a periodically varying magnetic flux, the resonator modes acquire frequency side bands. In this work we calculate the multi-frequency eigenmodes of resonators coupled to periodically driven SQUIDs and we use the Lagrange formalism to propose a theory for their quantization. The elementary excitations of a multi-frequency mode can couple resonantly to physical systems with different transition frequencies and this makes the resonator an efficient quantum bus for state transfer and coherent quantum operations in hybrid quantum systems. As an example of the application of our multi-frequency modes, we determine their coupling to transmon qubits with different frequencies and we present a bi-chromatic scheme for entanglement and gate operations.

Single photon state generation from a continuous-wave non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator

We present a theoretical treatment of conditional preparation of one-photon states from a continuous-wave non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator. We obtain an analytical expression for the output state Wigner function, and we maximize the one-photon state fidelity by varying the temporal mode function of the output state. We show that a higher production rate of high fidelity Fock states is obtained if we condition the outcome on dark intervals around trigger photo detection events.

Transforming squeezed light into a large amplitude coherent state superposition

A quantum superposition of two coherent states of light with small amplitude can be obtained by subtracting a photon from a squeezed vacuum state. In experiments this preparation can be made conditioned on the detection of a photon in the field from a squeezed light source. We propose and analyze an extended measurement strategy which allows generation of high fidelity coherent state superpositions with larger amplitude.

Circuit QED flip-flop memory with all-microwave switching

We present a theoretical proposal for a microwave driven circuit composed of superconducting resonators and qubits which shows a bistable behaviour, and we present a simple mechanism that allows single- or few-photon microwave pulses to work as Set- and Reset-signals that switch the circuit between its stable modes. The resulting system constitutes an ultra-low-energy Set-Reset flip-flop, and we show that its memory lifetime far exceeds the lifetime of states stored in any of its separate components.

Binding potentials and interaction gates between microwave-dressed Rydberg atoms

We demonstrate finite range binding potentials between pairs of Rydberg atoms interacting with each other via attractive and repulsive van der Waals potentials and driven by a microwave field. We show that, using destructive quantum interference to cancel single-atom Rydberg excitation, the Rydberg-dimer states can be selectively and coherently populated from the two-atom ground state. This can be used to realize a two-qubit interaction gate which is not susceptible to mechanical forces between the atoms and is therefore immune to motional decoherence.

Stringent and efficient assessment of Boson-Sampling devices

Boson-Sampling holds the potential to experimentally falsify the Extended Church Turing thesis. The computational hardness of Boson-Sampling, however, complicates the certification that an experimental device yields correct results in the regime in which it outmatches classical computers. To certify a boson-sampler, one needs to verify quantum predictions and rule out models that yield these predictions without true many-boson interference. We show that a semiclassical model for many-boson propagation reproduces coarse-grained observables that were proposed as witnesses of Boson-Sampling. A test based on Fourier matrices is demonstrated to falsify physically plausible alternatives to coherent many-boson propagation.

Deterministic entanglement of Rydberg ensembles by engineered dissipation

We propose a scheme that employs dissipation to deterministically generate entanglement in an ensemble of strongly interacting Rydberg atoms. With a combination of microwave driving between different Rydberg levels and a resonant laser coupling to a short lived atomic state, the ensemble can be driven towards a dark steady state that entangles all atoms. The long-range resonant dipole-dipole interaction between different Rydberg states extends the entanglement beyond the van der Walls interaction range with perspectives for entangling large and distant ensembles.

Estimation of atomic interaction parameters by photon counting

Detection of radiation signals is at the heart of precision metrology and sensing. In this article we show how the fluctuations in photon counting signals can be exploited to optimally extract information about the physical parameters that govern the dynamics of the emitter. For a simple two-level emitter subject to photon counting, we show that the Fisher information and the Cramér- Rao sensitivity bound based on the full detection record can be evaluated from the waiting time distribution in the fluorescence signal which can, in turn, be calculated for both perfect and imperfect detectors by a quantum trajectory analysis. We provide an optimal estimator achieving that bound.

The Fisher information and the quantum Cramer-Rao sensitivity limit of continuous measurements

Precision measurements with quantum systems rely on our ability to trace the differences between experimental signals to variations in unknown physical parameters. In this Letter we derive the Fisher information and the ensuing Cramer-Rao sensitivity limit for parameter estimation by continuous measurements on an open quantum system. We illustrate our theory by application to resonance fluorescence from a laser driven two-state atom and we show that photon counting and homodyne detection records yield different sensitivity to the atomic parameters, while none of them exceed our general result.
