Ulam method for the Chirikov standard map

We introduce a generalized Ulam method and apply it to symplectic dynamical maps with a divided phase space. Our extensive numerical studies based on the Arnoldi method show that the Ulam approximant of the Perron-Frobenius operator on a chaotic component converges to a continuous limit. Typically, in this regime the spectrum of relaxation modes is characterized by a power law decay for small relaxation rates. Our numerical data show that the exponent of this decay is approximately equal to the exponent of Poincaré recurrences in such systems. The eigenmodes show links with trajectories sticking around stability islands.

Diffusion and localization for the Chirikov typical map

We consider the classical and quantum properties of the "Chirikov typical map", proposed by Boris Chirikov in 1969. This map is obtained from the well known Chirikov standard map by introducing a finite number $T$ of random phase shift angles. These angles induce a random behavior for small time scales ($t T$). We identify the classical chaos border $k_c\sim T^{-3/2} \ll 1$ for the kick parameter $k$ and two regimes with diffusive behavior on short and long time scales. The quantum dynamics is characterized by the effect of Chirikov localization (or dynamical localization). We find that the localization length depends in a subtle way on the two classical diffusion constants in the two time-scale regime.

Shor's factorization algorithm with a single control qubit and imperfections

We formulate and numerically simulate the single control qubit Shor algorithm for the case of static imperfections induced by residual couplings between qubits. This allows us to study the accuracy of Shor's algorithm with respect to these imperfections using numerical simulations of realistic quantum computations with up to $n_q=18$ computational qubits allowing to factor numbers up to N=205193. We confirm that the algorithm remains operational up to a critical coupling strength $ε_c$ which drops only polynomially with $\log_2 N$. The obtained numerical dependence of $ε_c$ on $\log_2 N$ is in a good agreement with the analytical estimates that allows to obtain the scaling for functionality of Shor's algorithm on realistic quantum computers with a large number of qubits.

Effects of imperfections for Shor's factorization algorithm

We study effects of imperfections induced by residual couplings between qubits on the accuracy of Shor's algorithm using numerical simulations of realistic quantum computations with up to 30 qubits. The factoring of numbers up to N=943 show that the width of peaks, which frequencies allow to determine the factors, grow exponentially with the number of qubits. However, the algorithm remains operational up to a critical coupling strength $ε_c$ which drops only polynomially with $\log_2 N$. The numerical dependence of $ε_c$ on $\log_2 N$ is explained by analytical estimates that allows to obtain the scaling for functionality of Shor's algorithm on realistic quantum computers with a large number of qubits.

Quantum chaos and random matrix theoryfor fidelity decay in quantum computationswith static imperfections

We determine the universal law for fidelity decayin quantum computations of complex dynamics in presenceof internal static imperfections in a quantum computer. Our approach is based on random matrix theory applied toquantum computations in presence of imperfections. The theoretical predictions are tested and confirmed in extensive numerical simulations of a quantum algorithm for quantum chaos in the dynamical tent map with up to 18 qubits. The theory developed determines the time scales forreliable quantum computations in absence of the quantum error correction codes. These time scales are related to the Heisenberg time, the Thouless time, and the decay time given by Fermi's golden rule which are well known in the context of mesoscopic systems. The comparison is presented for static imperfection effects and random errors in quantum gates. A new convenientmethod for the quantum computation of the coarse-grained Wigner function is also proposed.

Localization and absence of Breit-Wigner form for Cauchy random band matrices

We analytically calculate the local density of states for Cauchy random band matrices with strongly fluctuating diagonal elements. The Breit-Wigner form for ordinary band matrices is replaced by a Levy distribution of index $μ=1/2$ and the characteristic energy scale $α$ is strongly enhanced as compared to the Breit-Wigner width. The unperturbed eigenstates decay according to the non-exponential law $\propto e^{-\sqrt{αt}}$. We analytically determine the localization length by a new method to derive the supersymmetric non-linear $σ$ model for this type of band matrices.

Interaction induced delocalization of two particles: large system size calculations and dependence on interaction strength

The localization length $L_2$ of two interacting particles in a one-dimensional disordered system is studied for very large system sizes by two efficient and accurate variants of the Green function method. The numerical results (at the band center) can be well described by the functional form $L_2=L_1[0.5+c(U) L_1]$ where $L_1$ is the one-particle localization length and the coefficient $c(U)\approx 0.074 |U|/(1+|U|)$ depends on the strength $U$ of the on-site Hubbard interaction. The Breit-Wigner width or equivalently the (inverse) life time of non-interacting pair states is analytically calculated for small disorder and taking into account the energy dependence of the one-particle localization length. This provides a consistent theoretical explanation of the numerically found $U$-dependence of $c(U)$.

Between Poisson and GUE statistics: Role of the Breit-Wigner width

We consider the spectral statistics of the superposition of a random diagonal matrix and a GUE matrix. By means of two alternative superanalytic approaches, the coset method and the graded eigenvalue method, we derive the two-level correlation function $X_2(r)$ and the number variance $Σ^2(r)$. The graded eigenvalue approach leads to an expression for $X_2(r)$ which is valid for all values of the parameter $λ$ governing the strength of the GUE admixture on the unfolded scale. A new twofold integration representation is found which can be easily evaluated numerically. For $λ\gg 1$ the Breit-Wigner width $Γ_1$ measured in units of the mean level spacing $D$ is much larger than unity. In this limit, closed analytical expression for $X_2(r)$ and $Σ^2(r)$ can be derived by (i) evaluating the double integral perturbatively or (ii) an ab initio perturbative calculation employing the coset method. The instructive comparison between both approaches reveals that random fluctuations of $Γ_1$ manifest themselves in modifications of the spectral statistics. The energy scale which determines the deviation of the statistical properties from GUE behavior is given by $\sqrt{Γ_1}$. This is rigorously shown and discussed in great detail. The Breit-Wigner $Γ_1$ width itself governs the approach to the Poisson limit for $r\to\infty$. Our analytical findings are confirmed by numerical simulations of an ensemble of $500\times 500$ matrices, which demonstrate the universal validity of our results after proper unfolding.

Quantum relaxation in open chaotic systems

Using the supersymmetry technique, we analytically derive the recent result of Casati, Maspero and Shepelyansky [cond-mat/9706103] according to which the quantum dynamics of open chaotic systems follows the classical decay up to a new quantum relaxation time scale $t_q\sim\sqrt{t_c t_H}$. This scale is larger than the classical escape time $t_c$ but still much smaller than the Heisenberg time $t_H$. For systems with orthogonal or unitary symmetry the quantum decay is slower than the classical one while for the symplectic case there is an intermediate regime in which the quantum decay is slightly faster.

Localization in a rough billiard: A sigma model formulation

We consider the quantum dynamics of a particle in a weakly rough billiard. The Floquet operator for reflection at the boundary is obtained as a unitary band matrix. The resulting dynamics in angular momentum space can be treated in the framework of the one-dimensional supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model. We find analytically localization and the corresponding localization length $ξ=D_{cl}$ where $D_{cl}$ is the classical diffusion constant due to boundary scattering.

Emergence of Quantum Ergodicity in Rough Billiards

By analytical mapping of the eigenvalue problem in rough billiards on to a band random matrix model a new regime of Wigner ergodicity is found. There the eigenstates are extended over the whole energy surface but have a strongly peaked structure. The results of numerical simulations and implications for level statistics are also discussed.

Quantum localization in rough billiards

We study the level spacing statistics p(s) and eigenfunction properties in a billiard with a rough boundary. Quantum effects lead to localization of classical diffusion in the angular momentum space and the Shnirelman peak in p(s) at small s. The ergodic regime with Wigner-Dyson statistics is identified as a function of roughness. Applications for the Q-spoiling in optical resonators are also discussed.
