The distribution of quantum fidelities

When applied to different input states, an imperfect quantum operation yields output states with varying fidelities, defined as the absolute square of their overlap with the desired states. We present an expression for the distribution of fidelities for a class of operations applied to a general qubit state, and we present general expressions for the variance and input-space averaged fidelities of arbitrary linear maps on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces.

Few qubit atom-light interfaces with collective encoding

Samples with few hundred atoms within a few micrometer sized region of space are large enough to provide efficient cooperative absorption and emission of light, and small enough to ensure strong dipole-dipole interactions when atoms are excited into high-lying Rydberg states. Based on a recently proposed collective encoding scheme, we propose to build few-qubit quantum registers in such samples. The registers can store and transmit quantum information in the form of single photons, and they can employ entanglement pumping protocols to perform ideally in networks for scalable quantum computing and long distance quantum communication.

Holographic quantum computing

We propose that a single mesoscopic ensemble of trapped polar molecules can support a "holographic quantum computer" with hundreds of qubits encoded in collective excitations with definite spatial phase variations. Each phase pattern is uniquely addressed by optical Raman processes with classical optical fields, while one- and two-qubit gates are accomplished by selectively transferring the individual qubit states to a stripline microwave cavity field and a Cooper pair box where controllable two-level unitary dynamics is governed by classical microwave fields.

A Wave Function approach to dissipative processes

Due to growing interest in quantum measurement, control and feedback, we reproduce a manuscript from 1992, presenting a simple physical and mathematical derivation of stochastic differential equations for wave functions of probed quantum systems. V. P. Belavkins seminal quantum filtering theory with similar equations, developed in the 1980es, was not known to the authors at the time of writing of the present manuscript.

Atomic spin squeezing in an optical cavity

We consider squeezing of one component of the collective spin vector of an atomic ensemble inside an optical cavity. The atoms interact with a cavity mode, and the squeezing is obtained by probing the state of the light field that is transmitted through the cavity. Starting from the stochastic master equation, we derive the time evolution of the state of the atoms and the cavity field, and we compute expectation values and variances of the atomic spin components and the quadratures of the cavity mode. The performance of the setup is compared to spin squeezing of atoms by probing of a light field transmitted only once through the sample.

Stochastic master equation for a probed system in a cavity

We present a detailed derivation of the stochastic master equation determining the time evolution of the state of a general quantum system, which is placed inside a cavity and subjected to indirect measurements by monitoring the state of electromagnetic radiation transmitted through the cavity. The derivation is based on the physics involved and the final result is stated in terms of the physical parameters of the setup. To illustrate the predictions contained in the equation, we solve it analytically for a specific system, and we demonstrate quantum jumps and freezing of the internal coherent dynamics of the system as a result of continued measurements.

Quantum-limited position measurements of a dark matter-wave soliton

We show that the position of a dark matter-wave soliton can be determined with a precision that scales with the atomic density as $n^{-3/4}$. This surpasses the standard shot-noise detection limit for independent particles, without use of squeezing and entanglement, and it suggests that interactions among particles may present new advantages in high-precision metrology. We also take into account quantum density fluctuations due to phonon and Goldstone modes and we show that they, somewhat unexpectedly, actually improve the resolution. This happens because the fluctuations depend on the soliton position and make a larger amount of information available.

Hanbury Brown and Twiss correlations in atoms scattered from colliding condensates

Low energy elastic scattering between clouds of Bose condensed atoms leads to the well known s-wave halo with atoms emerging in all directions from the collision zone. In this paper we discuss the emergence of Hanbury Brown and Twiss coincidences between atoms scattered in nearly parallel directions. We develop a simple model that explains the observations in terms of an interference involving two pairs of atoms each associated with the elementary s wave scattering process.

Quantum gates and multi-particle entanglement by Rydberg excitation blockade and adiabatic passage

We propose to apply stimulated adiabatic passage to transfer atoms from their ground state into Rydberg excited states. Atoms a few micrometers apart experience a dipole-dipole interaction among Rydberg states that is strong enough to shift the atomic resonance and inhibit excitation of more than a single atom. We show that the adiabatic passage in the presence of this interaction between two atoms leads to robust creation of maximally entangled states and to two-bit quantum gates. For many atoms, the excitation blockade leads to an effective implementation of collective-spin and Jaynes-Cummings-like Hamiltonians, and we show that the adiabatic passage can be used to generate collective Jx=0 eigenstates and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states of tens of atoms.

Quantum computing with a single molecular ensemble and a Cooper pair box

We propose to encode quantum information in rotational excitations in a molecular ensemble. Using a stripline cavity field for quantum state transfer between the molecular ensemble and a Cooper pair box two-level system, our proposal offers a linear scaling of the number of qubits in our register with the number of rotationally excited states available in the molecules.

Error correction in ensemble registers for quantum repeaters and quantum computers

We propose to use a collective excitation blockade mechanism to identify errors that occur due to disturbances of single atoms in ensemble quantum registers where qubits are stored in the collective population of different internal atomic states. A simple error correction procedure and a simple decoherence-free encoding of ensemble qubits in the hyperfine states of alkali atoms are presented.

Atomic diffraction in counter-propagating Gaussian pulses of laser light

We present an analysis of atomic diffraction due to the interaction of an atomic beam with a pair of Gaussian light pulses. We derive a simple analytical expression for the populations in different diffraction orders. The validity of the obtained solution extends beyond the Raman-Nath regime, where the kinetic energy associated with different diffraction peaks is neglected, into the so-called channeling regime where accurate analytical expressions have not previously been available for the diffraction. Comparison with experimental results and exact numerical solutions demonstrate the validity of our analytical formula.

Geometric phases in open tripod systems

We first consider stimulated Raman adibatic passages (STIRAP) in a closed four-level tripod system. In this case, the adiabatic eigenstates of the system acquire real geometric phases. When the system is open and subject to decoherence they acquire complex geometric phases that we determine by a Monte Carlo wave function approach. We calculate the geometric phases and the state evolution in the closed as well as in the open system cases and describe the deviation between these in terms of the phases acquired. When the system is closed, the adiabatic evolution implements a Hadamard gate. The open system implements an imperfect gate and hence has a fidelity below unity. We express this fidelity in terms of the acquired geometric phases.

Multimode analysis of the light emitted from a pulsed optical parametric oscillator

We present a multimode treatment of the optical parametric oscillator, which is valid for both pulsed and continuous-wave pump fields. The two-time correlation functions of the output field are derived, and we apply the theory to analyze a scheme for heralded production of non-classical field states that may be subsequently stored in an atomic quantum memory.

Association of heteronuclear molecules in a harmonic oscillator well

We describe the collisional interaction between two different atoms that are trapped in a harmonic potential. The atoms are exposed to a magnetic field, which is modulated in the vicinity of an s-wave Feshbach resonance, and we study the formation of molecular bound states and excited states of the trapped system with non-trivial angular correlations.

Conditional generation of path-entangled optical NOON states

We propose a measurement protocol to generate path-entangled NOON states conditionally from two pulsed type II optical parametric oscillators. We calculate the fidelity of the produced states and the success probability of the protocol. The trigger detectors are assumed to have finite dead time, and for short pulse trigger fields they are modeled as on/off detectors with finite efficiency. Continuous-wave operation of the parametric oscillators is also considered.

Pair correlated atoms with a twist

We present an analysis of the quantum state resulting from the dissociation of diatomic molecules prepared in a condensate vortex state. The many-body state preserves the rotational symmetry of the system in quantum correlated states by having two equally populated components with angular momentum adding to unity. A simple two-mode analysis and a full quantum field analysis is presented for the case of non-interacting atoms and weak depletion of the molecular condensate.
